The investigation of novel structure-to-property relations of many transition metal trihalides MX₃ by downscaling to promising monolayer is still pending. However, the production of two-dimensional MX₃ sheets that are both high crystalline and thin is an experimental challenge. This thesis is focused on the rational synthesis planning and the derived targeted preparation of thin MX₃ nanosheets (≤ 100 nm) on suitable substrates by chemical vapor transport (CVT) as well as their characterization by complementary analytical methods. CVT of nanosheets directly on substrates benefits of low timescales, less material consumption and only few structural distortions. For the determination of optimal growth conditions, the CVT processes of investigated compounds were initially simulated by using the Calphad method (program package TRAGMIN). Thus, the occurring transport efficient gas species and temperature dependent, dominating vapor transport equilibria were calculated to optimize the growth process in a direct and straightforward way. Based on prior simulation results single crystalline sheets of MCl₃ (M = Ru, Mo, Ti, Cr) and CrX₃ (X = I, Br, Cl) were successfully prepared at temperatures between 573 – 1023 K on YSZ (yttrium stabilized zirconia) or sapphire substrates. The adjustable CVT parameters (transport duration, temperatures or weighed starting material) were optimized with respect to the targeted synthesis of either bulk or nanosheets at substrates. Microsheets with thicknesses of less than 4 μm (α-TiCl₃) and about 20 nm thin nanosheets (α-RuCl₃, CrCl₃ and CrI₃) down to ultrathin flakes (≈ 3 nm, α-MoCl₃ and CrBr₃) were obtained by CVT. As a highlight, monolayers of α-RuCl₃ and CrCl₃ were isolated successfully by means of a subsequent delamination. The MX₃ sheets morphology and dimension was described by optical and electron microscopy, highlighting their two-dimensional nature. By several X-ray spectroscopy and diffraction techniques the desired composition (M:X = 1:3), high crystallinity and phase-purity of thick and thin MX₃ platelets was confirmed subsequently. With respect to MX₃ nanosheets a slight increase (α-RuCl₃, α-MoCl₃ and CrBr₃) or decrease (CrCl₃) in phonon energies was observed in comparison to their bulk counterparts. The magnetic properties of CrCl₃ micro- and nanosheets were determined to be solely ferromagnetic and thus different than those of the bulk samples. Finally, the structure-to-property relations were investigated at a first example. The catalytic properties of α-TiCl₃ microsheets were investigated by gas-phase polymerization of ethylene. By downscaling the catalysts thickness by CVT, we obtained an activity improvement of 24 % in comparison to bulk α-TiCl₃.
Carcasses of large vertebrate animals are integral elements in the natural environment. The aim of the present study is to clarify the relation between large carcasses and local ecosystems. It has been investigated which and how many animals are directly or indirectly involved into the carcass decomposition process, and whether there is a succession of community pattern during different carcass decomposition stages. A special focus was on the question how the temporal and the spatial distribution of arthropods are influenced by the carcass and its properties. A new classification of decomposition stages is proposed based on a new openness index for a carcass. Three carcass food web models for the research area were composed dependent on different seasons in the course of the year: Carcass exposed in spring, summer, and winter, respectively. Subsequently, the feasibility of using carcasses as a tool for food web restoration on a regional scale has been discussed.
From 2009 to 2011, in total, nine different carcasses from Meles meles, Capreolus capreolus, Cervus elaphus, and Sus scrofa were exposed in the research area, a former military training area situated in Eastern Germany. Pitfall traps were used to collect arthropods visiting the carcasses. Bird’s and Mammal’s attendance have been detected by automatic cameras and direct observation. In total, more than 112,000 arthropods from 25 taxa were identified. For Coleoptera Silphidae, Geotrupidae, Trogidae, Staphylinidae (partly) and Heteroptera the investigation could be carried out on species level. The existence of carcasses in the research area significantly increased arthropod diversity and abundance. Long term exposed carcasses significantly influenced vertebrates occurrence, vegetation and the surrounding soil as to diversity and various environmental conditions, respectively. The main consumers of carcasses in summer were various arthropods, Corvus corax and Haliaeetus albicilla. Besides the already well-known carrion arthropods, Orthoptera, Lepidoptera, and Apocrita were observed using carcasses directly. In winter, the main consumers of carcasses were Sus scrofa, Vulpes vulpes, Canis lupus, Corvus corax, and Haliaeetus albicilla. By multivariate analysis it could be shown that the main factors influencing the occurrences of arthropods are the weight and the degree of openness of the carcass, and the main factor for the carcasses decomposition process is the openness index of the carcass. Carcass exposition is a cheap and efficient method to use large wild games which did not die from disease for the food web restoration in the research area.
Labor market perspectives of the Brazilian sugarcane agro-industry : prospects and challenges
(2012)
Brazil has five centuries of tradition in sugarcane production and is the world's largest producer and exporter of sugar. It is also the world’s largest exporter and the second largest producer of ethanol fuel. Economic, social and environmental aspects have caused structural modifications in the sugarcane production system including the mechanization of the harvesting operation. Mechanization has potential economic, environmental, agronomic and social impacts. From the economic point of view, it leads to cost reductions, and possibly higher productivity. Mechanization could also have a positive impact on the environmental dimension of the sector’s sustainability as it avoids the need for pre-burning practices, a point that is especially relevant for the ethanol supply chain. As mechanization enables the harvesting of raw sugarcane, dry leaves and tops (trash) are left on the field, which could have agronomic advantages. The recovery of a reasonable fraction of the sugarcane trash could potentially increase bioelectricity production. These energy gains could increase the sector’s competitiveness and to some extent avoid emissions from fossil fuels. On the other hand, agricultural mechanization can be considered a controversial agricultural technology as its increased intensity causes a negative balance in rural jobs creation. Mechanization simultaneously causes a demand increase for specialized agricultural workers and reduces the demand for non-specialized workers. Currently, the lack of qualified workforce is a challenge for the sector. In an attempt to bridge this gap, partially coordinated qualification strategies had emerged. Even when a number of additional jobs will be created, presumably the sector will not be able to relocate its current rural staffing. Large portions of these workers are temporary migrants from deprived regions of Brazil who typically have low levels of schooling, including a share of illiterate. Other agricultural products have also shown the tendency to reduce their number of workers, regardless of the increases in their production. This phenomenon, partially caused by increasing mechanization, could also hinder the opportunities of sugarcane harvesters to absorb into other rural activities. In addition, the changes undergone by the sector have been accelerated due to the introduction of environmental laws phasing out the sugarcane burning practice in various federal entities. The complexity of this transition and the remarkable heterogeneity of the sector were approached in this dissertation using the Human Capability Framework. The use of this tool led to the identification of key capacity and labor market influencing features based on stakeholders’ interaction and feedback. The framework was an instrumental part of understanding the multifaceted system of actors and structures, which have a stake in the developments of the sector. The identified capacity influencing features were: workers’ background, workers’ union affiliation, formal and informal skill formation, demographics and productivity. It was noted that key socio-economic indicators vary widely in a regional basis with a sharp substandard trend in the workers from the North and Northeast. The identified labor market influencing features were: national and international markets, legislation, agricultural trends, working conditions, the pace of mechanization, and Agro-environmental Zoning. The labor market is expected to undergo qualitative, quantitative, geographical and temporal changes depending of the interaction of these elements. It was concluded that there is an increasing influence of globalization on the developments of the sector and that these changes will heavily rely on the developments of production, area expansion, productivity, and the technology adopted. It was concluded that if coordinated policies in a number of separate but linked areas and plans for their implementation were developed, then labor supply and demand might be more constructively linked when dealing with economic, energy, and sustainability goals.
Multi- and manycore processors promise to combine high overall peak performance with moderate power consumption to meet the constantly growing demand for computational power under the energy constraints of today’s CMOS technology. Future systems with manycore processors are expected to contain a huge amount of cores, which exceeds the number of processes that will run simultaneously. Consequently, processor time sharing approaches, that introduce significant overhead from regular context switches in common OS, will no longer be necessary.
This work investigates mechanisms for scalable and energy-efficient spatial partitioning of multi- and manycore processor systems. In addition, it explores the implications of exclusive processor core allocation to user processes due to the absence of temporal multiplexing and offers approaches to ease the adaptation to the new programming model.
The proposed mechanisms achieved fast thread allocation which motivates applications for dynamic thread allocation and benefits performance as well as energy efficiency. The efficiency control and resource revocation mechanisms detect and prevent wasteful and inefficient resource occupation from poorly optimized or malicious processes. In this way, the global efficiency of the system is optimized. The dynamic processing resource allocation and revocation handling has been integrated into a task parallel runtime system, to disburden the application programmer from manual implementation and to increase productivity.
With regard to the depletion of global phosphorus reserves and with the aim of ensuring sustainable soil fertility on agricultural soils, a fundamental understanding of mechanisms of fixation and mobilization of inorganic phosphorus in soils is required. Amongst others, phosphorus availability is affected by ad- and desorption reactions on pedogenic Fe- and Al-hydroxide surfaces. The characterization of phosphate binding on those contrasting mineral surfaces can help to find solutions for enhancing the mobilization of fertilized but not available soil inorganic phosphate. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopic experiments were carried out during phosphorus adsorption on crystalline gibbsite, poorly crystalline 2-line-ferrihydrite and amorphous Fe:Al-hydroxide mixtures. Desorption experiments with CaCl₂, CaSO₄, citric acid (C₆H₈O₇), and humic acid (C₉H₉NO₆) were conducted to determine the capacity of phosphate fixation and mobilization in short- and long-term. Additionally, phosphorus release from the Fe- and Ca-phosphates vivianite and hydroxyapatite were analyzed.
For gibbsite, the formation of AlHPO₄ and Al₂HPO₄ can be assumed, while for ferrihydrite, a FeHPO₄ or Fe₂PO₄ complex and the precipitation of FePO₄ with longer equilibration time were observed. Fe₂HPO₄ or a Fe₂PO₄ surface complex was deduced for amorphous Fe-hydroxides, an AlH₂PO₄ surface complex was identified for Al-hydroxides. The weakly associated amorphous FeO(OH) molecules enhance the precipitation of FePO₄. With high Al content, a weaker phosphate binding of both inner- and outer-sphere complexes and either no or minor quantities of precipitate were formed. Ferrihydrite showed a more rigid structure and a lower extent of precipitation compared to amorphous Fe-hydroxide. The cumulative phosphorus desorption followed the order CaCl₂ < CaSO₄ < humic acid < citric acid for crystalline and amorphous Fe- and Al-hydroxides as well for vivianite and hydroxyapatite. While inorganic anion exchange took part at easily available binding sites and fast exchangeable phosphorus, organic acids additionally affect the more heavily available binding sites and slow exchangeable phosphorus. For humic acid, the accumulation of metal-organic complexes in the desorption solution was suggested, whereas for citric acid the dissolution of the minerals was maintained. The cumulative release rates of the Flow-Through-Reactor setup were higher compared to batch due to a short residence time and a continuous concentration gradient. This could lead either to an over- or underestimation of the available phosphorus pools and influenced the comparability of both methods.
Beam splittings with an arbitrary number of beams of in- and output are introduced as second quantisations of isometric operators of matrix-multiplication. They are also characterised as the only vacuum-preserving isometries on multiple symmetric (bosonic) Fock space which are factorisable (tensor-decomposable) by regions. Studying this kind of operators was part of a close collaboration with neuroscientists to develop a quantum model of the recognition of signals in the brain. Definition and characterisation of beam splittings mentioned above show, that the interaction of signals coming from the senses and those generated by the brain (representing an expected view of the world) is meaningfully modelled by such a beam splitting operator. Thereby, regional factorisation of the operator of interaction corresponds to a parallel processing of partial signals belonging to different regions of the brain.
In anthropogenically heavily impacted river catchments, such as the Lusatian river catchments Spree and Schwarze Elster in Germany, the robust assessment of potential impacts of climate change on the regional water resources is of high relevance for water resources management. Large uncertainties inherent in future scenarios may, however, reduce the willingness of regional stakeholders to develop and implement suitable adaptation strategies to climate change.
This thesis proposes the use of an integrated framework consisting of i) an ensemble based modelling approach and ii) the incorporation of measured and simulated meteorological and hydrological trends to consider uncertainties in climate change impact assessments. In addition, land use, as the most responsive catchment characteristic to buffer potential climate change impacts, is considered as one suitable trigger for climate change adaptation.
The ensemble based modelling approach consists of the meteorological output of four climate downscaling approaches (DAs): two dynamical and two statistical. These DAs drive different model configurations of the two conceptually different hydrological models WaSiM ETH and HBV light. The objective of incorporating measured meteorological trends into the analysis was twofold: trends in measured time series can i) be regarded as harbinger for future change and ii) serve as a mean to validate the results of the DAs. In order to evaluate the nature of the trends, both gradual (Mann Kendall test) and step changes (Pettitt test) are considered as well as temporal and spatial correlations in the data. The suitability of land use change as an adaptation strategy to climate change is evaluated in the form of different land use change scenarios: i) extreme scenarios where the entire catchment is parameterised as coniferous forest and uncultivated land and ii) scenarios of changes in crop cultivation and ii) a combination of a change in crop cultivation and forest conversion. As study areas serve three almost natural subcatchments of the Spree and Schwarze Elster (Germany).
The results of the ensemble based climate change impact analysis show that depending on the type (dynamical or statistical) of DA used, opposing trends in precipitation, actual evapotranspiration and discharge are simulated in the scenario period (2031 2060). While the statistical DAs simulate a decrease in future long term annual precipitation, the dynamical DAs simulate a tendency towards increasing precipitation. The trend analysis suggests that measured precipitation has not changed significantly during the period 1961 2006. Therefore, the strong decrease in precipitation simulated by the statistical DAs should be interpreted as a rather dry future scenario. The dynamical DAs, on the other hand, are too wet in the reference period and needed to be statistically bias corrected which destroys the physical consistency between the parameters. Concerning temperature, measured and simulated trends agree on a positive trend. The uncertainty related to the hydrological model within the climate change modelling chain is comparably low when long term averages are considered but increases during low flow events. The proposed framework of combining an ensemble based modelling approach with trend analysis on measurements is a promising approach to gain more confidence into the final results of climate change impact assessments and to obtain an increased process understanding of the interrelation between climate and water resources.
In terms of climate change adaptation, land use alternatives can have a considerable impact on the water balance components as the analysis of the extreme scenarios revealed. The scenarios of changes in crop cultivation in combination with forest conversion show, however, that the impact on the long term annual water balance is comparably low. An intra annual shift in the water balance components can be triggered which makes these scenarios suitable to reduce low flow risks during the summer. Overall, land use change can serve as one part of an integrated climate change adaptation strategy. Such as strategy needs, depending on the severity of the climate change impact, to include other, especially technical measures of water resources management, such as additional water storage, different strategies to manage the existing and new reservoirs. It may also consider additional water transfers from neighbouring, more water rich, river catchments. Regional adaptation planning needs also to consider problems related to water quality which are a consequence of the long term mining activities in the Lusatian river catchments. Last but not least, adaptation strategies should not only consider climate but also other aspects of global change.
Water is a primordial resource for the development of urban agglomerations. Today, 50% of the population worldwide is concentrated in urban settlements and 10 - 20% of all worldwide freshwater consumption occurs in the domestic sector (UN: World water development report 3). By 2030, 60% of the world’s population will be living in urban settlements (UNESCO), and domestic freshwater consumption will rise by 70% in 2025. Urban areas inflict high pressure on the local and even regional water sources, since the high population density requires large flow volumes in a restricted area, with often competing pressures on the water resource per se as well as for the space needed for water storage or aquifer recharge. This becomes complicated and even critical in areas where natural water availability is already scarce and urban demand is high due to large population sizes. Today 700 million people in 43 countries are living in water stress condition (Human Development Report 2006). Mexico, ranking 88 on a global scale in water availability per capita, is a clear example of this situation, where the most populated urban settlements, such as Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Puebla or Queretaro are located in regions which concentrate only 31% of the renewable water of the country (CONAGUA). Thus, the main question arises: How will the urban settlements develop a sustainable water supply now and in the future?
The city of Guadalajara, in particular, has seen an extremely fast and chaotic development in the past three decades, where the population of the city increased from 1,354,000 inhabitants in 1970 to 4,064,000 in 2005; by 2020 Guadalajara is expected to overpass the 5 million inhabitants thus becoming a megacity. Nowadays, overall water consumption in the city is about 9.3 m3/sec. and it is estimated to be 10.3 m3/sec by 2030, with Lake Chapala as the main water source, supplying 55% of the water demand. However, Lake Chapala has been confronted with several severe droughts which critically lowered its water table as was the case between 1998 and 2003 and due to its weak equilibrium droughts could be more recurrent in the future. As the water supply of Guadalajara is strongly linked to the faith of Lake Chapala, Guadalajara needs to reduce its pressure on the lake by adopting strategies based on sustainable development.
The main goal of this research is to provide governments and decision makers with a robust tool that integrates the most amount of information possible but presents this information in a simple way, offering at the same time the possibility to detect the factors that need to be addressed in order to reach sustainability.
The specific aim is to test the use of composite indices (CIs) to the case of the city of Guadalajara in the period of the year 2000 to 2009. CI is a holistic methodology in which independent variables can be aggregated into a single result. CIs thus allow for the comparison between different cases, the integration of qualitative and quantitative variables and the easy use by decision makers. We used 11 carefully selected variables from all three sectors of sustainability, economical, ecological and social, which were first normalized using ranging procedures and process capability indices, and aggregated by using the weighted geometric mean. A set of best strategies Guadalajara should follow are suggested in order to have a sustainable water supply in the future.
With this study, we have been able to show that CIs are an effective tool for evaluating sustainability of domestic freshwater supply at local scale. Overall, Guadalajara reached a CI of 0.29 showing, that its domestic water supply is currently not sustainable. It was able to identify the following three main problems: a) lack of wastewater treatment with just less than 3% of the waste water being treated; b) water loss in the distribution system, with 34% of the water extracted being lost at some point in the distribution system (during treatment, in the pipelines and dweller connection to the distribution net); c) water availability, with increased flow volumes of Lake Chapala in the last six years, but only surpassing its natural storage twice (2004 and 2009). Nonetheless, a clear trend of continuous improvement could be seen overall in the past years with a decline in the domestic water consumption per capita to levels comparable to the one in Berlin, as a consequence of people awareness after the several drought Lake Chapala suffered in the beginning of the decade, and an increase in the level of access to piped water and connectivity to the drainage system to 94% of the city’s coverage in 2009 (on year 1990, the access to piped water was 89% and the connectivity to the drainage system was 92%).
It is well known that the development and adaptation capacities of rural communities in the developing world largely depend on the flexibility of the communities’ ‘social structure’ (the community as a norm-group itself, together with its ‘institutions’ as the legal, moral and ideological framework). ‘Structures’ that have been identified by research as being crucial for rural livelihoods are found to be specific non-market security structures that are based on concepts of solidarity, reciprocity, and kinship. It is also widely acknowledged that ‘agency’ (understood as the decision-making and action-taking of individuals, including their aims to influence others) also plays a role. However, very little is known about how the interplay between ‘structure’ and ‘agency’ shapes institutional change and adaptation. Specifically, proper analytical frameworks for analyzing this interplay are missing. This dissertation aims to contribute to our understanding of development and adaptation capacities of rural communities against the backdrop of current mechanisms of social security and their evolution, to the interplay of different factors in such processes of institutional change, and the relationship between structure and agency, as well as to the required development of appropriate analytical frameworks. Empirical research was conducted on the Mahafaly Plateau in South-West Madagascar with three detailed micro-studies on cases of change, analyzing them through the lens of Contemporary Classical Institutional Economics and the Framework for Modeling Institutional Change (Ensminger 1992), then proposing suggestions on how to improve the framework. The cases reveal that indeed ‘agency’ is an important factor shaping institutional change on the local or regional level. Institutional change is found to be both driven by collective action as well as evolutionary mechanisms. Importantly, agency is influencing both of these mechanisms. The results may be transferred to other rural societies of the developing world that also base the enforcement of their formal institutions on orality, ideologically value personal freedom and procedural liberty, and show a high diversity of institutions of all kinds. For such societies, the results suggest that the societal environment on the one hand favors adaptation on the level of individuals or small groups and allows these actions to evolutionary change institutions. On the other hand, adaptation based on designed institutional change and collective action is difficult to plan and execute. The framework applied to the cases is shown to be suitable as it allows us to shed light on changes in institutions including ideology as a result of the interplay between individual actors and their behavior, changes in external factors such as relative prices, the constellations of actors, and their bargaining power. By modifying the framework by adding ‘agency’ as one of the core elements, the analysis becomes even more comprehensive.
As a result of 20 years of experimental and theoretical investigations of high temperature superconductors (HTSC) one can draw a very complex and rich phase diagram that cannot be described completely yet. Numerous experimental findings give strong hints for an inhomogeneous distribution of spin and charge correlations in HTSC. Motivated by the experimental findings we try to answer the question whether pair correlations from broken symmetry states can be found in the framework of the Gutzwiller approximation of the Hubbard model. After an introductory discussion of selected experimental works and theoretical models we derive the charge-rotationally invariant Gutzwiller functional for the one-band Hubbard model. On this basis we calculate various states from the saddle point solution of functional in the attractive (U<0) regime. Starting with a second order expansion we investigate the instability of a normal system towards SC in the framework of the time dependent Gutzwiller approximation (TDGA). We derive criteria for a phase transition from the normal to the superconducting phase in the paramagnetic regime. We show results for an infinite dimensional lattice that are in good agreement with QMC data. In the next section of this work we present results for finite dimensional systems. We compare numerical results from the GA with the conventional Hartree-Fock approximation. As an example we discuss a homogeneously superconducting and a charge-ordered state. We show that the difference is mainly in the crossover from weak to strong coupling which is due to the renormalization in the Gutzwiller formalism. In a next step we derive an effective Hamiltonian on top of the saddle point solution. We compare the formalism analytically with the findings from the well known BCS theory. We verify our conclusions by numerical calculations. Motivated by different experimental works on d-wave symmetric k-dependent SC gaps we focus on the question whether states including non-local pair correlations can be a solution of the GA and how does this correlation lower the energy. We restrict to the repulsive regime (U>0) and discuss the formal requirements for a possible solution in view of a coexisting spin order and the interplay of local and non-local pair order. As a next application we prepare inhomogeneous solutions in the normal and in the extended Hubbard model where we include an additional inter-site interaction by the parameter V>0. We present inhomogeneous solutions that are characterized by stripe-shaped domains where the parameters for charge- and pair- ordering change their phases or their amplitude. We obtain results for the normal and the extended Hubbard model and we discuss the influence of the parameter V. We show that in case of V>0 a pair density wave (PDW) without stripes is the ground state. Another focus of the work is on point-like inhomogeneities namely polarons and (anti-)vortices in finite clusters. We present results that show a good agreement with the logarithmic dependence of the energy of the vortex state with respect to the vortex radius as well as possible attraction between vortex and anti-vortices. Finally in the last chapter we introduce the superfluid density in order to discuss the stability of our solutions in finite dimensional systems. We give a short overview on different analytical approaches to this quantity. We present an approach that is based on an energy expansion view of an angular distortion of the charge vector field. We discuss this approach by comparing the numerical GA results with exact QMC results where our approach turned out to be in good qualitative agreement.
Entwicklung einer Bewertungsmethodik zur Standortplanung und Dimensionierung von Wasserstoffanlagen
(2014)
Vergleichende populationsgenetische Untersuchungen an Arthropoden in gestörten Offenlandschaften
(2008)
So waren alle untersuchten Sandohrwürmer geflügelt.
Tehran Bazaar has been the most influential marketplace in Iran, over the last two hundred years, since Tehran became the capital of the country. The Bazaar has been a significant socio-political agent in Iranian society. Nevertheless, less attention has been given to its internal atmosphere, where the bazaaris, have tried to conserve their traditions and preserve their heritage. One of these heritages are “hey’ats”, religious formations for holding mourning sessions in Muharram month, as a ritual in Shi’a Islam. “Hey’ats” give the guilds a sense of collective identity, they represent them, and also build a shared heritage for them.
The Drapers’ Guild was the first guild in Tehran Bazaar, founding a hey’at. They founded this hey’at in 1883 and named it “the Drapers’ Hey’at”. After the Islamic Revolution of 1979, the Drapers faced difficulties preserving their heritage. They were forced to displace the Mirza Mousa Mosque in the Bazaar. The Mosque was their center for holding religious sessions and was publicly known as “the Drapers’ Mosque”. Since they were attached to the Mosque, their displacement was perceived a loss of heritage. Later, they decided to build a new home, “the Drapers’ Hosseinieh”. They decided to implement the interior design of their lost Mosque in the new place. This strategy enabled them overcome “the traumatic experience of displacement and heritage loss.” Also, to safeguard their new place, they legally registered their hey’at as an institution, and they wrote a constitution for it. The attempts for modernization, led them to develop beneficiary activities, as well. In this research, a qualitative approach is applied, benefiting from multiple methodologies, including; ethnography, secondary sources, and visual methods. The researcher has attempted to outline the story of the Drapers in preserving their heritage. This study hopefully would be useful for similar traditional organizations, showing how continuity and heritage preservation are possible to achieve for communities having experienced a troubled past.
The Taylor-Couette (TC) flow, the flow confined between two concentric independently rotating cylinders, is used as a perfect model to investigate shear flow over concave surfaces and one of the paradigmatic systems of the physics of fluids. In this thesis, an experimental investigation of the turbulent TC flow in a very wide gap geometry with a radius ratio 𝜂 = 0.1 is performed. The physical and dynamic behavior of the flow is studied in a geometry that has rarely been investigated before the current study, which makes this study unique. The study aims to understand the effect of curvature on the TC flow, particularly in cases where the circumferential length of the inner cylinder is smaller than the gap width. The flow is studied in the different rotation regimes: counter-rotating, co-rotating, and purely inner cylinder rotating regimes up to shear Reynolds numbers Re_s≤ 150000. The flow field has been qualitatively studied using visualization techniques. By probing the different flow parameters, familiar coherent TC flow patterns appear, in addition to newly observed patterns we assume only exist for very wide gap TC flows. For a more detailed quantitative study, a time-resolved velocity field measurement has been conducted using the High-speed Particle Image Velocimetry technique through the system end plate. The radial and azimuthal velocity components in the 2D horizontal plane are measured at different axial positions, in order to scan the axial variance of the flow. The recorded flow field is used to compute the angular momentum transport in terms of the quasi-Nusselt number (Nu_ω). The results show a maximum of Nu_ω for low counter-rotating rates of −0.011 ≤ μ_max ≤ −0.0077, which is associated with large-scale structures that span the entire gap. Moreover, the Nu_ω decreases for counter-rotation rates higher than μ_max until it reaches a minimum value and then tends to increase again for higher counter-rotation cases. The space-time behavior of the turbulent flow field for the high counter-rotating cases shows the existence of newly observed patterns next to the outer cylinder wall that propagates inward, enhancing the angular momentum transport and resulting in a second maximum in transport for higher counter-rotating rates. For the pure rotating inner cylinder, the momentum transport scaling with the shear rate Nu_ω ∼ Re_s^α has been studied, and it shows a transition in scaling to 𝛼 = −0.76 for all flows with Re_(s )≥ 25000. This new scaling reveals the transition of the flow from the classical turbulent regime to the ultimate one, where this transition is accompanied by a clear change in the flow behavior. Moreover, the flow in the co-rotating regime and particularly in the centrifugal stable regime (𝜇 > +0.01) is investigated. The Velocity measurements show the presence of disturbed flow near the inner cylinder, where the measured velocity profiles showed a clear deviation from those predicted by laminar flow for flows up to 𝜇 = +0.04.
Titanium nitride (TiN) is a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) compatible material with large potential for the fabrication of plasmonic structures suited for device integration. However, the comparatively large optical losses can be detrimental for application. This work reports a CMOS compatible TiN nanohole array (NHA) on top of a multilayer stack for potential use in integrated refractive index sensing with high sensitivities at wavelengths between 800 and 1500 nm. The stack, consisting of the TiN NHA on a silicon dioxide (SiO2) layer with Si as substrate (TiN NHA/SiO2/Si), is prepared using an industrial CMOS compatible process. The TiN NHA/SiO2/Si shows Fano resonances in reflectance spectra under oblique excitation, which are well reproduced by simulation using both finite difference time domain (FDTD) and rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) methods. The sensitivities derived from spectroscopic characterizations increase with the increasing incident angle and match well with the simulated sensitivities. Our systematic simulation-based investigation of the sensitivity of the TiN NHA/SiO2/Si stack under varied conditions reveals that very large sensitivities up to 2305 nm per refractive index unit (nm RIU−1) are predicted when the refractive index of superstrate is similar to that of the SiO2 layer. We analyze in detail how the interplay between plasmonic and photonic resonances such as surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs), Rayleigh Anomalies (RAs), and photonic microcavity modes (Fabry-Pérot resonances) contributes to this result. This work not only reveals the tunability of TiN nanostructures for plasmonic applications but also paves the way to explore efficient devices for sensing in broad conditions.
This thesis focuses on the investigation and characterization of the surfaces and interfaces of chalcopyrite-based Cu(In,Ga)Se₂ (CIGSe) and organo-metal mixed halide perovskites, specifically CH₃NH₃PbI(₃-ᵪ)Clᵪ thin film solar cell absorbers using various x-ray and electron spectroscopies. In particular, the impact of alkali treatments on the chemical and electronic surface and near-surface structure of CIGSe absorbers is studied. For CH₃NH₃PbI(₃-ᵪ)Clᵪ the compound formation is monitored and the peculiarities of the interface formation of CH₃NH₃PbI(₃-ᵪ)Clᵪ on compact and mesoporous TiO₂ are examined.
Laboratory and synchrotron-based photoelectron spectroscopy are used to gain a depth-dependent picture of the chemical and electronic structure in the surface and near-surface region of CIGSe absorbers, focusing on the influence of NaF and NaF/KF post-deposition treatments (PDT) when compared to alkali-free CIGSe absorbers. The alkali-free and NaF-PDT absorbers show similar chemical properties, having a Cu and Ga poor surface region compared to the nominal bulk and the same chemical environment for indium and selenium. For the NaF/KF-PDT samples a K-In-Se compound is present on top of a Cu-In-Ga-Se compound, with a nanopatterned surface that is almost devoid of Cu and Ga.
Further, for the NaF-PDT sample a near-surface electronic band gap of 1.61[+0.14/-0.51] eV is derived. In contrast, a large and more gradual change towards the surface is obtained for the NaF/KF-PDT absorber exhibiting a significant band gap widening of the surface, which is in agreement with a Cu- and Ga-devoid surface region and the formation of a K-In-Se surface compound.
To in-situ monitor the compound formation of CH₃NH₃PbI(₃-ᵪ)Clᵪ on compact TiO₂ (c-TiO₂) hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is used. During in-situ annealing a drop-casted layer of precursor solution on c-TiO₂ shifts in the perovskite related core levels can be observed upon reach the “transition temperature” of 80-100°C. Further the Cl signal decrease at the onset of annealing and shows a depletion in the surface region for annealing temperatures above 50°C. In addition, the chemical and electronic structure of the interface between perovskite and mesoporous TiO₂ (mp-TiO₂) or c-TiO₂ using different perovskite layer thicknesses are studied.
In this thesis we consider bilevel optimization problems in infinite-dimensional spaces. In particular, we are interested in providing first-order necessary optimality conditions. We consider bilevel optimization problems both in abstract Banach spaces and in some special situations. This includes the optimal control of the obstacle problem, which is a typical bilevel optimization problem in Sobolev spaces, as well as a class of inverse optimal control problems. We obtain optimality conditions for these more specific optimization problems by applying our results from the abstract setting.
Our main approach for deriving optimality conditions in the abstract setting utilizes the relaxation of a reformulation of the bilevel optimization problem via the optimal value function. We also introduce the so-called normal-cone-preserving operators and show how this concept can be applied.
We also consider other topics that arise in this context. For instance, we investigate the so-called limiting normal cone to a complementarity set in Sobolev spaces. This complementarity set plays a central role in the context of the optimal control of the obstacle problem. The limiting normal cone is a concept which appears in the area of variational analysis and generalizes the usual normal cone from convex analysis. We also investigate in which spaces Legendre forms and Legendre-* forms can exist. We show that if a Legendre-* form exists in a reflexive Banach space or a space with a separable predual space, then this space is already isomorphic to a Hilbert space. We also consider a discretization of a bilevel optimization problem in Lebesgue spaces. We present both theoretical error estimates and numerical experiments.
The new results in this thesis are illustrated by examples and counterexamples. In order to present the topics in a self-contained way, we review some known concepts and their basic properties. A particular focus for this is on the definitions and properties from the area of capacity theory.
The chemical and electronic structure of hybrid organometallic (CH₃NH₃PbI₍₃₋ₓ₎Clₓ) and inorganic (CsSnBr₃) perovskite materials on compact TiO₂ (c-TiO₂) is studied using x-ray and electron based spectroscopic techniques. The morphology and local elemental composition of CH₃NH₃PbI₍₃₋ₓ₎Clₓ, used as absorbers in PV devices, defining the film quality and influencing the performance of respective solar cells is studied in detail by using photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM). An incomplete coverage, with holes reaching down to the c-TiO₂ was revealed; three different topological regions with different degrees of coverage and chemical composition were identified. Depending on the degree of coverage a variation in I oxidation and the formation of Pb⁰ in the vicinity of the c-TiO₂ is found. The valence band maxima (VBM) derived from experimental data for the perovskite and c-TiO₂, combined with information from literature on spiro-MeOTAD suggests an energy level alignment resulting in an excellent charge selectivity at the absorber/spiro-MeOTAD and absorber/c-TiO₂ interfaces respectively. Further, the derived energy level alignment indicates a large recombination barrier (~2 eV), preventing shunts due to direct contact between c-TiO₂ and spiro-MeOTAD in the pin-holes.
In-situ ambient pressure hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-HAXPES) studies of 60 and 300 nm CH₃NH₃PbI₍₃₋ₓ₎Clₓ have been performed under varies conditions (i.e. vacuum/water and dark/UV light) to gain insight into the degradation mechanism responsible for the short lifetime of the absorber. The 60 nm perovskite forms Pb⁰ in water vapor (non-defined illumination) in presence of x-rays. The 300 nm perovskite sample shows a complex behavior under illumination/dark. In water vapor/dark the perovskite dissolves into its organic (MAI) and inorganic (PbI₂) components. Under illumination PbI₂ further decomposes to Pb⁰ induced by UV light and x-rays.
For alternative inorganic CsSnBr₃ perovskites, the impact of SnF₂ on the chemical and electronic structure is studied to identify its role for the improved performance of the solar cell. HAXPES and lab-XPS measurements performed on CsSnBr₃ with and without SnF₂ indicate two Sn, Cs, and Br species in all samples, where the second Sn species is attributed to oxidized Sn (Sn⁴⁺). When adding SnF₂ to the precursor solution, the coverage is improved and less Sn⁴⁺ and Cs and Br secondary species can be observed, revealing an oxidation inhibiting effect of SnF₂. Additionally, SnF₂ impacts the electronic structure, enhancing the density of states close to the VBM.

Wireless communication has become an indispensable part of our life and the demand for achieving higher throughput with lower energy consumption is ever growing. The ambitious throughput of 100 Gb/s and beyond is now becoming a modest goal thanks to comprehensive advances in transmission technologies and protocols. One important aspect of these advances is with regard to channel coding methods and the ability to detect and correct errors at the receiver. Computations needed by such methods become generally more complicated as they become more powerful in their performance. This imposes a great challenge for researchers attempting to devise practical methods for encoding and decoding Forward-error Correction (FEC) techniques tailored for high-throughput scenarios.
In this work we focus on high-throughput Quasi-Cyclic LDPC (QC-LDPC) codes, as they have been selected as one of the main FEC techniques for the two major next generation wireless technologies, namely Wi-Fi 6 (IEEE 802.11ax) and 5G. Our target is to develop complete encoding and decoding design for these codes in order to reach the throughput of 100 Gb/s with affordable power consumption. Toward this goal, we investigate first the appropriate encoder design for these codes which can be used at such high data-rate with reasonably low power consumption. Then we propose several novel ideas for improving the decoding performance and complexity of QC-LDPC codes. The proposed novel ideas collectively facilitate a decoder able to run at 50 Gb/s with less than 12 pJ/b energy consumption for a Latin squares QC-LDPC code. All the proposed methods are practical and implementable and their effectiveness are showcased by either Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) or Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) synthesis.
Experimental investigation in turbulent boundary layer flows represents one of the canonical geometries of wall bounded shear flows. Utmost relevance of such experiments, however, is applied in the engineering applications in aerospace and marine industries. In particular, continuous effort is being imparted to explore the underlying physics of the flow in order to develop models for numerical tools and to achieve flow control. Within the scope of this Ph. D. topic, application of active control method such as micro-blowing effect in the incompressible, zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer was investigated.
Turbulent boundary layer flow is particularly interesting as well as challenging due to the presence of different interacting scales which are increasingly becoming significant as the flow inertial conditions keeps growing. Therefore, energy content of the coherent structures in outer layer becomes stronger and necessitates measurements in relatively large Reynolds number.
Present control experiments in turbulent boundary layer can be split into two different work segments, where one is objected towards the data measurements in turbulent boundary layer over smooth surface with and without any external perturbation. Here, perturbation is applied in the form of wall normal blowing while keeping the magnitude of blowing very low compared to the free stream velocity. For the subsequent results reported here, magnitude of blowing ratio was varied between 0%~6%.
In the first part of the present thesis e.g. 0.415×10e+3≤Reτ≤1.160×10e+3, measurements were performed at the Brandenburg University of Technology wind tunnel. Non-intrusive Laser Doppler Anemometry was applied to carry out a series of measurements on a zero pressure gradient flat plate turbulent boundary layer. Blowing ratio through the perforated surface was varied between 0.17%~1.52% of the free stream velocity. To a maximum of 50% reduction in friction drag was achieved.
For the measurements on the upper range of the stated Reynolds number, were conducted at the boundary layer wind tunnel. This boundary layer wind tunnel offers a spatially developed turbulent boundary layer over a flat plate within 2.2×10e+3≤Reτ≤5.5×10e+3 with an excellent spatial resolution. With the help of Stereo Particle Image Velocimetry technique, measurement of the velocity components were obtained covering entire boundary layer in streamwise wall normal plane. In addition, time resolved measurements were also obtained in spanwise and wall-normal plane in order to look into the morphology of turbulent structures immediately above the blowing area.
Wind energy is a growing concern over the present awareness of lethal impact of green house gas emission. This energy source has been proven a promising alternative to fossil fuel based energy. Increased onshore wind capacity and decreased amount of low roughness wind sites has inspired the wind energy researchers to explore the possibilities of wind energy from high roughness sites such as urban area. Moreover, exhausted grid capacity between the wind energy producer from remote area and the consumer at city is also a major constrain for wind energy expansion. Driven by such motivation, this thesis has explored possibilities of wind energy conversion from buildings where energy is needed the most. Urban topography is known to be highly turbulent region considering its roughness characteristics.
Wind energy yield from urban aerodynamics is a vast arena of experimental research. Within the time frame of the thesis period and available opportunities, a brief description about the wind energy assessment modelling approach from urban flow was outlined. There are several possibilities of wind energy yield from the built structure, but only building integrated duct was focused in this thesis.
Time-averaged and global wind speed on the building integrated ducts, flow around the buildings was measured from wind tunnel and numerical analysis. Available wind energy yield and turbulence present in the locations measured from the flow was calculated based on the wind tunnel data and summarized with the pros and cons of the particular geometry. Elliptical duct configuration was found to achieve maximum energy yield from the omnidirectional free stream flow. However, simple rectangular duct configuration was determined as most efficient and optimized considering its simplicity, financial feasibility and relative energy yield with other duct configuration. The thesis also showed that on roof configuration is also very promising for wind energy exploration from the omnidirectional free stream flow.
Necessary recommendations were made based on available result for future development of the research approach. Scope and opportunities was mentioned. This investigation has proved that it is possible to extract limited amount of wind energy from building augmented ducts using concentrator effect of the building exterior. Thus, the thesis concluded that the wind energy yield from building augmented ducts using the concentrator effect of the building exterior is a promising renewable energy source.
Physics-informed neural networks (PINN) are machine-learning methods that have been proved to be very successful and effective for solving governing equations of fluid flow. In this work we develop a robust and efficient model within this framework and apply it to a series of two-dimensional three-component (2D3C) stereo particle-image velocimetry datasets, to reconstruct the mean velocity field and correct measurements errors in the data. Within this framework, the PINNsbased model solves the Reynolds-averaged-Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations for zeropressure-gradient turbulent boundary layer (ZPGTBL) without a prior assumption and only taking the data at the PIV domain boundaries. The TBL data has different flow conditions upstream of the measurement location due to the effect of an applied flow control via uniform blowing. The developed PINN model is very robust, adaptable and independent of the upstream flow conditions due to different rates of wall-normal blowing while predicting the mean velocity quantities simultaneously. Hence, this approach enables improving the mean-flow quantities by reducing errors in the PIV data. For comparison, a similar analysis has been applied to numerical data obtained from a spatially-developing ZPGTBL and an adverse-pressure-gradient (APG) TBL over a NACA4412 airfoil geometry. The PINNs-predicted results have less than 1% error in the streamwise velocity and are in excellent agreement with the reference data. This shows that PINNs has potential applicability to shear-driven turbulent flows with different flow histories, which includes experiments and numerical simulations for predicting high-fidelity data.
Process-based hydrological models, which simulate nitrogen load from its sources to the receiving waterbody, play an important role in supporting catchment management. The reliability of those models, such as the representative model SWAT used in this study, is determined by a sound calibration and the analysis of the prediction uncertainty. The multi-objective calibration approach prevails the classic single-objective calibration on the spatial parameterization of specific processes. However, the requirement of additional observations and practical procedures limits its application. Moreover, the prediction uncertainty of nitrogen load is inevitable and should also be quantified. This study is a scientific contribution to catchment management by overcoming the challenge with a systematic, well-founded concept of multi-objective calibration and uncertainty analysis for nitrogen load simulation in data-scarce catchments. The concept is tested and proofed by its practical applicability on the Yuan River Catchment (YRC) in China and leads to a generalized, recommended procedure for catchment management application as valuable progress in this field.
The study proposed to apply three groups of objectives, multi-site, multi-objective-function, and multi-metric. The applicability and the advantages of two multi-objective calibration approaches, Euclidean Distance and Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II were analyzed. To quantify the prediction uncertainty, the study proposed to use the simulations with the highest or the lowest percent bias to represent the uncertainty band of the nitrogen load from the critical source areas (CSAs) and to the stream. The data-scarcity of the YRC was overcome by metrics obtained from open-access satellite-based datasets and metrics extracted from the existing discharge observations. Results show that multi-objective calibration has ensured the model’s better performance in terms of the spatial parameterization, the magnitude of the output time-series and the water balance components, in comparison to single-objective calibration. The predicted CSAs showed that 50% of the total nitrogen (TN) loading to the stream was from 26.3% to 37.1% of the area in the YRC. Meanwhile, over 50% of those TN were from the paddy field. Recommendations for application go to the multi-objective calibration considering all three groups of objectives. Approaches to obtain multi-metric objectives in the YRC are also applicable for catchments with data-scarcity. Recommendations for nitrogen management in the YRC is to emphasize the CSAs identified, especially the paddy field.
Water pollution is a major issue in developing countries. 2.2 of the 2.3 billion people who suffer annually from waterborne diseases live in this part of the world. Moreover, it causes the deterioration of aquatic ecosystems the living of billions of poor people depend on. A major source of water pollution is the discharge of untreated municipal wastewater. On average, cities in developing countries discharge 80-90% of their sewage untreated. Though treatment of municipal wastewater remains a huge challenge in developing countries, the situation is not equally adverse all over the place. Treatment rates vary substantially across localities. From this observation, the question arises what drives and what impairs wastewater treatment. No quantitative analysis of this topic has been performed yet at the municipal level in a developing country.
Therefore, this thesis investigates the impact of social factors on municipal wastewater treatment in Mexican municipalities in order to gain insights on what improves wastewater treatment in a developing country. 846 of 2,456 Mexican municipalities treat a share of their municipal wastewater that ranges from single-digit percentages to full coverage while the majority of municipalities treats no wastewater. The study relies on econometric techniques to scrutinize 10 hypotheses on the relationship between social factors and wastewater treatment. More precisely, it applies binary outcome models to estimate the conditional probability wastewater treatment takes place in a municipality for a sample of 2,290 Mexican municipalities. In addition, it applies the Tobit and Fractional logit model to estimate the percentage of treated municipal wastewater depending on social factors for 425 municipalities.
The thesis identifies geographic spillovers, environmental federalism, institutional aspects like the corporatization of municipal water service, urbanization, per capita income and its distribution as significant influencing factors. A significant effect of education, ethnic heterogeneity, female participation in municipal politics and water scarcity is not found. In addition, the involvement of superior government tiers of a developing country in the funding of municipal wastewater treatment infrastructure seems to mitigate the influence of social factors on wastewater treatment. Based on these findings, the thesis develops policy recommendations to improve municipal wastewater treatment in developing countries.
Strategic Environmental Assessment in regional land use planning (here: SEA-REP) is a systematic process in Germany, which aims at an optimisation of the integration of environmental policies into decision-making at regional scale. It therefore plays an essential role for the comparison of site alternatives, and the implementation of mitigation and adaptation measures of negative effects of both regional development and climate change. Significant findings and personal experiences gained in an INTERREG project (‛transSEA’) created a fundamental basis for this doctoral research. The main objective was to develop the ‛LUCCA’ indicator system, which is a result of an analysis of land use types, that are increasingly important for effects of global climate change, and should therefore adapt to future conditions with regional land use planning. This system was developed from current German practice of the methodological application of SEA-REP in the core assessment of site-specific impacts on the affected area and impact zone. Main objectives were to integrate spatial effects of climate change into SEA-REP, and to develop a method to make particularly the tendency of physical degradation of natural resources in a region transparent. The research was based on a comprehensive analysis of best practice of SEA and assessment methods applied in German case studies of regional land use planning. Proposed was a a two-tiered environmental baseline- and objective-led approach of impact assessment. Its first tier is a site-specific assessment of significant impacts of regional plan designations and their alternatives. An environmental conflict analysis has the aim to apply assessment thresholds of conflict intensity for each impact factor affecting the importance of assessed components of LUCCA. Results are three classes of conflict intensity, which were determined and can be measured with the help of state indicators, impact indicators and assessment thresholds. 12 LUCCA indicators were defined in connection to regional environmental orientation objectives, environmental components, land uses and further criteria for indicator selection. The second tier is represented by an overall strategic assessment of the regional plan and its designation criteria. This assessment additionally considers positive and cumulative impacts, as well as structural alternatives. The result of the research is a standard concept for environmental orientation objectives, guidance indicators and assessment ranges for the LUCCA indicator system. Regional environmental orientation objectives, which represent outcome values of the future state of environment, were derived from existent environmental quality objectives and environmental quality standards. For each LUCCA indicator mitigation and adaptation measures of regional planning and requirements for tiering to SEA of lower land use planning were proposed. Recommendations for vital and critical action are addressed to competent national and regional authorities of spatial and sector planning. These involve the direct integration of concerns of climate change into SEA-REP, the regional operationalisation of environmental objectives for adaptation to climate change, an improved cooperation between spatial and sector planners concerned with the future use of land and resources, and, last but not least, an involvement of the public in the setting of regional objectives for the future state of a region’s environment. Recommendations for the competent national and federal ministries are the integration of substantial standards into legislation, the setting of binding standards for a stricter reduction of land consumption, the determination of clear responsibilities and activities at all planning levels, and the release of guidance for effective regional land use planning practice that enhances adaptation to climate change. The main recommendations for European regional planning bodies are to establish regional environmental objective concepts for SEA-REP, update regional environmental data profiles, apply the SEA-REP+LUCCA indicator system, develop a tiered decision-support system, challenge conventional regional planning, improve cooperation with sector planning and involve the public in the development of adaptation strategies. A recommended adaptation task at regional planning level is the designation of strictly safeguarded priority areas with specific functions of land uses for the mitigation of negative effects of climate change. Such priority areas, which should be area-specifically defined in a regional land use map, should be linked to the implementation of binding adaptation measures in lower land use planning and at project level. An operationalisation of proposed assessment steps will be necessary for the regional-specific geographic and bio-physical conditions of the EU regions. The thesis concludes with future research needs and an outlook on the potential future role of SEA-REP. A clear responsibility of the future tasks of SEA-REP and LUCCA was recognised as a formal driving force for adaptation of land use to effects of climate change. Improved knowledge on spatial effects of climate change and vulnerability assessments will be required for an effective revision and application of SEA-REP and LUCCA. SEA should gain further importance in a transparent and participative decision-making. Environmental concerns and the protection of LUCCA will have to gain more weight, if the significance of danger and harm, caused by effects of climate change and anthropogenic land degradation, shall be mitigated now and in the future.
The LHC is the largest particle accelerator and storage ring in the world, used to investigate fundamentals of particle physics and to develop at the same time the technology of accelerators and detectors. Four main experiments (ATLAS, ALICE, CMS and LHCb) , located around the LHC ring, provide insight into the nature of particles and search for answers to as yet unexplained phenomena in the universe. Two proton or heavy ion beams circulate in the LHC and are brought into collision in the four experiments.
The physics potential of each experiment is determined by the luminosity, which is a ratio of the number of the events during a certain time period to the cross section of a physics process. A measurement of the luminosity is therefore essential to determine the cross section of interesting physics processes.
In addition, safe and high-quality data-taking requires stable beam conditions with almost no beam losses. Each experiment has its own detectors to measure beam losses, hereafter called machine induced background. One such detector is installed in CMS, BCM1F. Based on diamond sensors it was designed and built to measure both, the luminosity and the machine induced background. BCM1F ran smoothly during the first LHC running period from 2009-2012 and delivered valuable beam loss and luminosity information to the control rooms of CMS and LHC. At the end of 2012 the LHC was shut down to improve the performance by increasing the proton energy to 7TeV and decreasing the proton bunch spacing to 25ns. Due to the success of BCM1F an upgrade of its sensors and readout components was planned in order to fulfil the new requirements.
The upgrade of the sensors comprises a two pad instead of one pad metallization. 24 instead of the previous 8 single crystal diamond sensors were foreseen for the new BCM1F to enhance the robustness and redundancy. To instrument BCM1F, 59 sensors were electrically characterized by measuring the leakage current, signal stability and charge collection efficiency. Quality criteria were defined to select sensors for the final installation. An overview of these measurements including a summary of the results is given in this thesis. In addition, an upgraded amplifier was developed within the collaboration in 130nm CMOS technology. It has a peaking time of 7ns instead of the 22ns of the one previously installed. A BCM1F prototype comprising a two pad sensor and the upgraded amplifier was tested at the DESY-II accelerator in a 5GeV electron beam. Results of these test-beam measurements are presented in this thesis as well as simulations to interpret the measurements.
The installation of the upgraded BCM1F was completed in 2014. In 2015 BCM1F was commissioned and started to measure luminosity and machine induced background. At the end, the thesis will describe both types of measurements with the focus on machine induced background demonstrating the functionality of BCM1F.
Computational steering is an interactive remote control of a long running application. The user can adopt it to adjust the simulation parameters on the fly. Correspondingly, simulation of large scale biochemical networks is computationally expensive, particularly stochastic and hybrid simulation. Such extremely intensive computations necessitate an interactive mechanism to permit users to try different paths and ask simultaneously "what-if" questions while the simulation is in progress. Furthermore, with the progress of computational modelling and the simulation of biochemical networks, there is a need to manage multi-scale models, which may contain species or reactions at different scales (called also stiff systems). In this context, Petri nets are of considerable importance in the modelling and analysis of biochemical networks, since they provide an intuitive visual representation of reaction networks. The contributions of this thesis are twofold: firstly, we introduce the definition and present simulation algorithms of Generalised Hybrid Petri Nets (GHPNbio) to represent and simulate stiff biochemical networks where fast reactions are represented and simulated continuously, while slow reactions are carried out stochastically. GHPNbio provide rich modelling and simulation functionalities by combining all features of Continuous Petri Nets (CPN) and Extended Stochastic Petri Nets (XSPN), including three types of deterministic transitions. Moreover, the partitioning of the reaction networks can either be done off-line before the simulation starts or on-line while the simulation is in progress. Secondly, we introduce a novel framework which combines Petri nets and computational steering for the representation and interactive simulation of biochemical networks. The main merits of the framework proposed in this thesis are: the tight coupling of simulation and visualisation, distributed; collaborative; and interactive simulation, and intuitive representation of biochemical networks by means of Petri nets. Generalised hybrid Petri nets and computational steering will together provide an invaluable tool for systems biologists to help them to obtain a deeper system level understanding. GHPNbio speed up the simulation and simultaneously preserve accuracy, while computational steering enables users of different background to share, collaborate and interactively simulate biochemical models. Finally, the implementation of the proposed framework is given as part of Snoopy - a tool to design and animate/simulate hierarchical graphs, among them qualitative, stochastic, continuous and hybrid Petri nets.
In this manual we discuss the use of Snoopy’s computational steering framework to simulate and interactively steer (stochastic, continuous, hybrid) Petri nets, e.g., biochemical network models. In a typical application scenario, a user constructs a model using a Petri net editing tool (e.g., Snoopy). Afterwards, the Petri net model is submitted to one of the running servers to quantitatively simulate it. Later, other users can adapt their steering GUIs to connect to this model. One of the connected users initialises the simulation while others could stop, pause, or restart it. When the simulator initially starts, it uses the current model settings to run the simulation. Later, other users can remotely join the running simulation and change on the fly parameters and the current marking.
Hybrid simulation of biological processes becomes widely used to overcome the limitations of the pure stochastic or the complete deterministic simulation. In this manual, we present easy-to-follow steps for constructing and executing hybrid models via Snoopy [HHL+12]. Snoopy is a tool to design and animate or simulate hierarchical graphs, i.e., qualitative, stochastic, continuous, and hybrid Petri nets. This manual is concerned with hybrid Petri nets (HPN) [HH12] as well as their coloured counterpart (HPNC) [HLR14]. HPN combine the merits of stochastic and continuous Petri nets into one single class. Moreover, HPN in Snoopy supports state of the art hybrid simulation algorithms (e.g., [HH16]) to execute the constructed HPN models. Simulating a model using Snoopy's hybrid simulation involves first constructing the reaction network via HPN notations and afterwards executing such model.
