Imaging Capability of Terahertz and Millimeter-Wave Instrumentations for NDT of Polymer Materials
(2006)
During Rutherford cable production the wires are plastically deformed and their initially round shape is distorted. Using X-ray absorption tomography we have determined the 3D shape of an unreacted Nb3Sn 11 T dipole Rutherford cable, and of a reacted and impregnated Nb3Sn cable double stack. State-of-theart image processing was applied to correct for tomographic artefacts caused by the large cable aspect ratio, for the segmentation of the individual wires and subelement bundles inside the wires, and for the calculation of the wire cross sectional area and shape variations. The 11 T dipole cable cross section oscillates by 2% with a frequency of 1.24 mm (1/80 of the transposition pitch length of the 40 wire cable). A comparatively stronger cross sectional area variation is observed in the individual wires at the thin edge of the keystoned cable where the wire aspect ratio is largest.
In this article, results on the microscopic dynamics of a low-molecular glass former and a polymer confined in nanoporous silica obtained by inelastic neutron scattering are presented. By combining time-of-flight spectroscopy and backscattering spectroscopy we are able to cover a large dynamical range, from the low-frequency vibrations to the relaxation. The most prominent effect was observed on the boson peak in the vibrational spectrum. A strong reduction of the modes at lowest frequencies could be observed in both cases. The main effect on the relaxation is a broadening for the salol system. For the polymeric system a difference of the confinement influence on the methyl-group rotation and the relaxation can be detected from a first qualitative interpretation of the data.
An intercomparison study of analytical methods for the determination of magnesium in low alloy steel
(2012)
In an intercomparison study three low alloy steel materials were analyzed on their content of the trace element Mg, and five different analytical techniques were used, namely spark-OES, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), inductively coupled plasma time of flight mass spectrometry (ICP-TOFMS), inductively coupled plasma quadrupole mass spectrometry (ICP-QMS), and glow discharge mass spectrometry (GD-MS). Solid steel discs were used for analysis with spark-OES and GD-MS. For the analyses with ICP-OES, ICP-TOFMS, and ICP-QMS steel chips were wet-digested in aqua regia, and the wet-digestion was performed either in polypropylene tubes placed in a heating block or in Teflon pressure vessels using a microwave assisted system. The Mg concentrations obtained for the three steel materials were: 2.0, 2.8, and 10.3 µg g-1, respectively, and the spread in results was acceptable, giving RSD values in the range of 2030%.
Structuring of thin-film photovoltaic modules requires basic knowledge of the laser – thin-film interaction in order to adapt the accessible laser parameters, like wavelength, power, repetition rate and scribing speed whilst taking into account the specific material properties of the layer. We have studied the nanosecond laserablation behavior of corresponding layers (i) of silicon based thin-film solar cells with a-Si/µc-Si tandem absorber type and (ii) of back contact and absorber layer of CIGSe solar cells. The respective ablation threshold fluences were determined as integrative parameters describing the specific laser – material interaction. For the threshold determination we used two different methods and developed a new analytical approach taking into account scribing through the glass substrate as it is preferred for most structuring processes. This was done by analyzing the thin film ablation results by means of optical microscopy, profilometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Moreover, we determined the incubation coefficient of the regarded material layers which allows us to predict quantitatively the influence of the spot overlap on the scribing threshold.
Manufacturing of CIGSe thin film solar modules involves typically one laser structuring step (P1) and two mechanical structuring steps (P2 and P3) for serial interconnection. In our approach, complete laser structuring is successfully demonstrated by application of short nanosecond laser pulses (<10 ns) with a single, visible wavelength of 532 nm. The P1 and the P3 trenches are scribed by induced and direct ablation, respectively. For the P2 scribe, the thermal input of the ns laser pulses is used to transform the CIGSe absorber layer locally into a highly conductive compound to provide proper electrical interconnection. These findings promise further simplification and flexibility to thin film solar cell production.
A recently developed theoretical model represents the generalization of the indentation of a sphere into an infinite homogeneous halfspace to the problem of a Hertzian load acting on a halfspace covered with one or more films having different elastic properties. The model allows the analytical calculation of the complete elastic stress field and the deformations within the films and the substrate. Some results of the model shall be confirmed by nanoindentation experiments using an UMIS-2000 nanoindenter into Si3N4/SiO2 and SiO2/ Si3N4 double layers on BK7 glass and Si(100) single crystal. The materials used allow accurate measurements due to their homogeneous, amorphous structure as well as low surface and interface roughness. After the determination of the instrument compliance and the real, depth dependent indenter radius the measured loaddepth data are compared with calculated results. It is shown that measurement results can be correctly interpreted by the model. The onset of plastic deformation is investigated for the same samples by multiple partial unloading experiments with a 4-µm radius diamond sphere. The critical load at which a first deviation from a wholly elastic response occurs is used for a stress calculation with the model. The mechanical behavior of the different film combinations is interpreted by means of the von Mises comparison stress. The measured results, together with the analytical modeling, allow an optimization of the thickness and modulus of the individual layers to get a maximum mechanical stability.
