- The sociologist and psychoanalyst Erich Fromm (1900-1980) developed a social psychological method whose special significance is that it also captures unconscious motivations and impulses. In that way, it is also possible to identify strivings and behaviors, as well as public values and thought patterns, which, in a humanistic perspective, can be seen as socially patterned mental >defects<. With his concept of social character, what is perceived as >normal< and >reasonable< in a given society can be questioned as a possible >pathology of normalcy<. How relevant Fromm’s approach is for current Critical Psychology is illustrated by the present dominant social character.
