Freydizm i sovremennoe khristianstvo [Freudianism and Contemporary Christianity,

  • Sigmund Freud was a self-proclaimed atheist and most religious ideologies were hostile toward him. Currently, however, many thinkers see a common spiritual purpose between Christianity and psychotherapy. The association between religion and Freudianism is particularly intense in the United States. Homo psychologicus is discussed versus homo spiritualis. Contemporary followers of Freud, eg, Erich FROMM and Carl Jung, have largely abandoned Freud's atheistic stance. Jung criticized the orthodox Catholic Church, claiming that striving toward a transcendental God does not orient man toward development of a fully mature personality. FROMM distinguished between authoritarian, destructive religion, and humanistic religion-with its main goal of man's self-realization. Christian theologians are beginning to view Christian morality, as it existed in the Anglo-Saxon countries, as essentially negative in character. Also discussed are Jesus as the first psychologist and changing conceptions of sin.
