In this lecture, the safety assessment of hydrogen gas storage systems is presented using the example of composite pressure vessels. The main element is a probabilistic approval approach based on five steps. Firstly, the testing and evaluation of properties at the beginning of life are shown. Secondly, methods for artificial aging and the effect on the residual strength are presented. Thirdly, testing against dedicated accidents is introduced. Fourthly, effects on the surveillance of production quality are discussed. Finally, degradation and the end of life are estimated. Background information and examples are given for each step. The assessment presented is a method applicable for many safety-related systems.
Determination of residual stress evolution during repair welding of high-strength steel components
(2021)
The sustainable and resource-efficient production of wind energy plants requires the use of modern high-strength fine-grain structural steels. This applies to both foundation and erection structures. During the assembly of steel structures, unacceptable defects can occasionally be found in the weld area. In most cases, the economical solution would be local thermal gouging of the affected areas and re-welding. Due to the high shrinkage restraint of the joint groove in the overall structure, the superposition of design and welding-induced residual stress can lead to crack formation and ultimately to component failure, particularly in interaction with the degradation of the microstructure and mechanical properties high-strength steels during the repair process.
In this context, component-related investigations of S500MLO and S960QL (FOSTA-P1311/IGF-Nr. 20162 N) focusing on welding residual stress evolution during local thermal gouging and rewelding. In this study, repair welding of S500MLO is carried out using in-situ digital image correlation (DIC) and ex-situ X-ray diffraction methods (XRD) to analyse strains and stresses. Therefore, self-restrained specimens were systematically gouged and rewelded with defined welding heat control (heat input, working temperature) and parameters. By means of structural mechanics calculations, geometries of self-restrained specimens were identified, that represent defined rigidity conditions of repair welds of real components. It could be shown that with increasing restraint intensity significantly higher residual stresses occur in the weld metal and heat affected zone. Furthermore, it revealed that the transverse stresses along the weld seam decrease at the weld seam ends leading to different stress state during gouging and welding. XRD analysis of the local residual stresses after cooling to RT longitudinal and transverse to the weld direction showed a good comparability with global DIC analyses.
Cobalt chromium alloys are often used in turbine and plant construction. This is based on their high thermal and mechanical stress resistance as well as their high wear resistance to corrosive and abrasive loads. However, cobalt is a cost-intensive material that is difficult to machine. Moreover, increasingly complex structures and the optimisation of resource efficiency also require additive manufacturing steps for the production or repair of components in many sectors. Concerning inhomogeneity
and anisotropy of the microstructure and properties as well as manufacturing-related stresses, a lot of knowledge is still necessary for the economic use of additive welding processes in SMEs. As a result of the high stresses on the components and requirements for a high surface quality, a complementary use of additive and machining manufacturing processes is necessary. Thereby, Co–Cr alloys are extremely challenging for machining with geometrically defined cutting edges because of their low thermal conductivity combined with high strength and toughness. An approach to solve this problem is to refine and homogenise the microstructure. This is achieved by modifying the alloy with elements zirconium and hafnium, which are added up to a maximum of 1 wt.-%. A reduction of the process forces and stresses on the tool and work piece surface is also achievable via hybrid milling processes. There are already studies on the combined use of additive and machining manufacturing processes based on laser technology. However, knowledge based on powder and wire-based arc processes is
important, as these processes are more widespread. Furthermore, the effects on the surface zone of additively manufactured components by hybrid finish milling have not yet been a subject of research. The results show that the structural morphology could be significantly influenced with the addition of zirconium and hafnium.

Investigation of the internal impact during a 9 m drop test of an accident-safe waste package
(2021)
The safety assessment of packages for the transport of radioactive material follows the IAEA regulations and guidance. The specified regulatory tests cover severe accidents and demonstrate the package containment system integrity. Special attention must be drawn to the behaviour of the content which could move inside the package due to unpreventable gaps caused by the loading procedure and the structure of the content. A possible internal impact of the content which occurs during the drop tests onto the lid system is investigated. The IAEA regulations SSR-6 and the Guidance SSG-26, revised recently, consider input from Germany and France related to the significance of internal gaps.
In the context of a waste package design assessment, a model was equipped with a representative content to conduct a drop test with an internal impact. The weight and kinetic impact of this content covered all possible real contents. The objective of the test was to maximize the load onto the lid system and to prove the mechanical integrity by complying with the required leak tightness. The test was conducted conservatively at a package temperature lower than -40 °C at the BAM Test Site Technical Safety.
This paper gives an overview of efforts to address internal gaps and their consequences, and the BAM efforts with the implementation of this topic into IAEA regulations and guidance material. The paper then focuses on the conduction of a drop test and investigation of internal component impact.

A novel ultrasonic borehole probe is developed for the quality assurance of sealing structures in radioactive waste repositories using existing research boreholes. The aim is to analyse the sealing structures made of salt concrete concerning potential cracks, delamination, and embedded objects. A first prototype of the probe uses 12 individual dry point contact (DPC) shear horizontal wave transducers separated by equidistant transmitter/receiver arrays, each consisting of six individual transducers. It is operated with a commercial handheld ultrasonic testing device used in civil engineering. In order to increase the generated sound pressure of the borehole probe, the number of transducers will be increased to 32 for the novel probe. In addition, a time-controlled excitation of the individual probes is used to steer a focused sound beam to a certain angle and focus on a certain distance based on calculated time delays. Hence, the sensitive test volume is more limited, and the signal-to-noise ratio of the received signals improved. This paper presents the validation of the newly developed phased array borehole probe by beam simulation and experimentally on a half-cylindrical test specimen to investigate the directional characteristics. In combination with geophysical reconstruction method, an optimised radiation characteristic of the probe, an improved signal quality and thus an increased reliability of the results in imaging is expected. This is of great importance to construct safe sealing structures needed for radioactive or toxic waste disposal.
The excellent mechanical properties of elastomer seals at a wide range of temperatures as well as their high versatility and recovery potential under several load conditions make these materials well suitable for the application in containers designed for transport and disposal of negligible heat generating radioactive waste. While a seal exchange at defined intervals is typical in many conventional applications, it is impossible or at least hard to perform when principles of minimization of radiation exposure have to be considered which prohibit an avoidable cask handling. An extensive knowledge of the change of the elastomer properties during aging and the availability of reliable end-of-lifetime criteria to guarantee the safe enclosure of the radioactive material for the required time are mandatory. As BAM is involved in most of the national cask licensing procedures and in the evaluation of cask-related long-term safety issues, great efforts have already been made and are still ongoing to scientifically support this task.
Among other representative types of elastomers, specimen made from ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM) were tested before, during and after aging to capture the with respect to application most important of their complex mechanical properties.
Exemplary results of these investigations were used to calibrate material models implemented in the commercial finite element software ABAQUS/Standard®. The finite element model already presented in previous works uses a sequential temperature displacement coupling. The calculated compression stress relaxation (CSR) and compression set (CS) values do satisfactorily match the experimental results.
In many investigations performed at BAM both values (CSR and CS) were identified as key indicators of elastomer’s long-term performance.
However, the possibility to correlate these equivalent indicators with performance values such as tightness and leakage rate, measurable in the mounted state, is an important goal of our future work. In the presented study the ABAQUS® feature of “pressure penetration” is introduced in the suggested finite element model for this purpose. It provides the possibility to simulate the penetration of a gas into a possible gap between flange and O-ring causing an opening of a leakage path. Three dimensional and axis-symmetric finite element models were generated to represent flat and grooved flanges of different dimensions.
The sensitivity of the feature to several input parameters is investigated and the observed behavior of the O-ring is correlated with the results of performed leakage tests.

The EURATOM PREDIS project (http://www.predis-h2020.eu, last access:TS1) targets the development and implementation of activities for predisposal treatment of radioactive waste streams other than nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste. It started on 1 September 2020 with a 4 year duration. The consortium includes 47 partners from 17 member states. The overall budget of the project is EUR23.7 million, with EC contribution of EUR 14 million. The PREDIS project develops and increases the technological readiness level (TRL) of treatment and conditioning methodologies for wastes for which no adequate or industrially mature Solutions are currently available, including metallic materials, liquid organic waste and solid organic waste. The PREDIS project also develops innovations in cemented waste handling and predisposal storage by testing and evaluating.
The technical work packages align with priorities formulated within the Roadmap Theme 2 of EURAD (https://www.ejp-eurad.eu/TS2), Nugenia Global Vision (https://snetp.eu/nugenia/TS3) and with those identified by the project’s industrial end users group (EUG). The PREDIS will produce tools guiding decision making on the added value of the developed technologies and their impact on the design, safety and economics of waste management and disposal.
Four technical work packages are focusing on specific waste types: metallic, liquid organic, solid organic, and cemented wastes. For the first three, the main aim lies in processing, stabilizing, and packaging the different waste streams, e.g. by using novel geopolymers, to deliver items which are in line with national and international waste acceptance criteria. In contrast, the fourth technical work package has a different focus.
To provide better ways for a safe and effective monitoring of cemented waste packages including prediction tools to assess the future integrity development during predisposal activities, several digital tools are evaluated and improved. Safety enhancement (e.g. less exposure of testing personnel) and cost-effectiveness are part of the intended impact. The work includes but is not limited to inspection methods, such as muon imaging, wireless sensors integrated into waste packages as well as external package and facility monitoring, such as remote Fiber optic sensors. The sensors applied will go beyond radiation monitoring and include proxy parameters important for long-term integrity assessment (e.g. internal pressure). Sensors will also be made cost-effective to allow the
installation of many more sensors compared to current practice. The measured data will be used in digital Twins of the waste packages for specific simulations (geochemical, integrity) providing a prediction of future behavior.
Machine learning techniques trained by the characterization of older waste packages will help to connect the models to the current data. All data (measured and simulated) will be collected in a joint database and connected to a decision framework to be used at actual facilities.
The presentation includes detailed information about the various tools under consideration in the Monitoring of cemented waste packages, their connection and first results of the research.

Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are omnipresent in our daily lives. LIBs power our laptops and mobile phones, are the energy storage of choice for the electrification of vehicles, and play a vital role in the layout of the storage devices needed for the balancing of the grid.
Research groups all over the world work on the improvement of LIBs, e.g., an increase in energy density and cycle-life as well as a decrease in costs. In recent years, investigations concerning the LIB’s safety continuously gain importance, especially, pushed by incidents with electric vehicles. They are multiple levels at which safety measures can be implemented, i.e., material, cell, battery and system level. Accordingly, the behaviour of LIBs under abuse/misuse conditions are often investigated on those levels.
Here, we focus on the safety on cell level. Generally, the abuse/misuse leads to an increase in heat in the cell at worst triggering a chain of exothermic reactions. Hence, the cell’s temperature rapidly increases leading to the so-called thermal runaway (TR) possibly accompanied by flames and/or explosion of the cell. Herein, different hazardous features during the TR of different commercial cells are analysed such as temperature, flames, projectiles and toxic gases. In order to gain further insights on the parameters influencing the TR, different type of initiation modes, e.g., external heating, overcharging, nail penetration and external short circuiting are utilized. Moreover, the state of charges (SOCs) are varied to differ the amount of electrical energy present in the cells.
Next to the characteristic of the TR of a single cell, the investigation of the propagation of the TR from one cell to another is an important parameter, as a battery is usually composed of multiple cells. Due to the close packaging of the single cells, the TR of one cell is often able to initiate the TR of the surrounding cells, finally, causing the TR of the whole battery. Herein, the propagation ability is studied depending on the cell type and SOC. Finally, the results will be used to formulate (cell specific) conditions for a safe transport of LIBs. Moreover, the gained knowledge can support the development of advanced measures to increase the safety on cell level in the future.
Natrium-Batterien eingegangen.
Lithium exists in two stable isotopes, 6Li and 7Li. The ratio of these in every ore varies depending on the geological history of the sample, thus providing a tool for fingerprinting the distinct origin of Li containing samples. Determination of the exact isotope ratio for e.g. designation of provenance today relies on expensive and bulky instrumentation such as multi `collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry` (MC-ICP-MS). These instruments, however, are known to bear pitfalls in the characterization of particular elements including Lithium. BAM recently developed two alternative analytical devices for this task, solely relying on inexpensive optical spectroscopy in combination with state-of-the-art multivariate data analysis such as Machine learning algorithms. Both techniques have been comprehensively studied using certified reference materials and comparing the results to MC-ICP-MS results and could be shown to result in comparable figures of merit, paving the way for a more general accessibility to provenance determination instrumentation. The results also pave the way towards even further simplification of the laboratory infrastructure demands and to further include additional elements into the isotopic fingerprinting methodology.
Within the project SealWasteSafe, we advance construction materials and monitoring concepts of sealing structures applied for underground disposal of nuclear or toxic waste. As these engineered barriers have high demands concerning integrity, an innovative alkali-activated material (AAM) is improved and tested on various laboratory scales. This AAM has low reaction kinetics related to a preferential slow release of the heat of reaction in comparison to alternative salt concretes based on Portland cement or magnesium oxychloride cements. Hence, crack formation due to thermally induced strain is reduced. After successful laboratory scale analysis (Sturm et al., 2021), the AAM is characterised on a larger scale by manufacturing test specimens (100–300 L).
Conventional salt concrete (DBE, 2004) and the newly developed AAM are compared using two specimen geometries, i.e. cylindrical and cuboid. A comprehensive multisensor monitoring scheme is developed to compare the setting process of AAM and salt concrete for these manufactured specimens. The analysed parameters include temperature and humidity of the material, acoustic emissions, and strain variations. Passive sensor systems based on radiofrequency identification technology (RFID) embedded in the concrete, enable wireless access to temperature and humidity measurements and are compared to conventional cabled systems. Additionally, fibre-optic sensors (FOS) are embedded to record strain, but also have potential to record temperature and moisture conditions. Part of this project aims at demonstrating the high reliability of sensors and also their resistance to highly alkaline environments and to water intrusion along cables or at sensor locations. Further technical improvements were implemented so that first results clearly show the scalability of the setting process from previous small-scale AAM experiments and particularly the high potential of the newly developed approaches.
Furthermore, ultrasonic methods are used for quality assurance to detect obstacles, potential cracks and delamination. On the one hand, both active and passive ultrasonic measurements complement the results obtained from the multisensor monitoring scheme for the produced specimens. On the other hand, the unique large aperture ultrasonic system (LAUS) provides great depth penetration (up to nearly 10 m) and can thus be applied at in situ sealing structures built as a test site in Morsleben by the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung, BGE) as shown by Effner et al. (2021). An optimised field lay-out identified from forward modelling studies and advanced imaging techniques applied to the measured data will further improve the obtained results. To characterise the inside of the test engineered barrier and achieve a proof-of-concept, an ultrasonic borehole probe is developed to enable phased arrays that can further improve the detection of potential cracks. Modelling results and first analysis of semispherical specimens confirmed the reliability of the directional response caused by the phased arrays of the newly constructed ultrasonic borehole probe.
Overall, the project SealWasteSafe improves the construction material, multisensor monitoring concepts and ultrasonics for quality assurance. This will help to develop safe sealing structures for nuclear waste disposal. The outcomes are particularly valuable for salt as a host rock but partly also transferrable to alternative conditions.
Hydrogen production via water electrolysis will be an essential cornerstone in development of sustainable, fossil-free fuel and chemical production on a global scale. The activity and stability of each catalyst is highly dependent on the properties of the coating, i.e., phase composition, crystallinity, accessible surface area, and many other factors. The key to developing improved catalysts is a better understanding of the relationships between their performance, stability, and physicochemical properties. However, these relationships can be complex and are also strongly influenced by the reaction environment. Therefore, operando analysis of the catalyst material during catalysis at realistic potentials and current densities is highly desirable. However, many analytical techniques cannot be applied in liquid environments at realistic potentials and current densities.
We propose environmental ellipsometric analysis in a dedicated electrochemical flow cell as a method to evaluate gas evolution reactions operando under realistic working conditions. Figure 1 illustrates schematically the developed technique. Key factors to success are highly active model-type catalysts, a suitable sample environment, and a deep understanding of the appropriate model development, as well as concise cross validation with numerous other analytical techniques.
The method was developed and validated by analyzing a calcination series (300 – 600 °C) of mesoporous templated IrOx films ex-situ and operando under oxygen evolution reaction (OER) conditions. The employed environmental electrochemical spectroscopic ellipsometric (ECSE) analysis revealed during OER the change of optical and electronic properties, i.e. the dielectric functions, resistivity and band-to-band transitions (p-d band transitions). Film thickness and porosity were validated by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray reflectometry (XRR) or ellipsometric porosimetry (EP), electrical and electronic properties by means of conductivity measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) or UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy. The electronic structures of the catalysts from valence electron energy loss spectra (VEELS) derived from ε1 and ε2 from SE measurements reveal a direct correlation with electrochemical activities in OER.
In the presentation reversible and irreversible potential-dependent changes of the catalyst properties during operation will be discussed along with the dynamics of gas formation, transport and dissolution at different potentials.

The BAM research project BRUZL (Fracture mechanical analysis of spent fuel claddings during long-term dry interim storage) evaluates results of quasi-static Ring Compression Tests (RCT). Due to its simple realisation, the RCT is an established method for characterising the mechanical behaviour of fuel cladding, where a small tube sample is subjected to a compressive load and the relation between load and displacement is obtained. During tests at room temperature, unirradiated ZIRLO® samples with a distinct extend of radial hydrides have shown high susceptibility to sudden, brittle failure at relatively small loads. Hydride morphology and radial hydride metrics have been an integral part of the characterisation of degradation mechanisms of cladding. A software tool for the analysation of metallographic micrographs was developed. The program allows the automated calculation of hydride lengths, detection of continuous hydride structures, their statistical evaluation and visualisation. Numerical models have been established to reproduce experimental RCT results featuring an elastic-plastic material model, which was derived from inverse finite element analyses of as-received RCT samples. A cohesive zone model (CZM) is introduced to the model to reproduce load drops in the linear regime of the load vs. displacement curve. Using a traction-separation approach for the CZM, the cohesive parameters are fitted to match numerical and experimental results yielding the fracture mechanical material properties. Combining the three key aspects hydride morphology, fracture mechanics and RCT stress-state a failure criterion can be established as a result of the BRUZL project.
The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) under contract no. 1501561.
The topic of the presentation are distributed fiber optic measurement techniques that can be used for long-term monitoring of strain, temperature and radiation distribution in the radiation environment. The fiber optic sensors applied to the surface of waste packages provide detection and localization of cracks.
In this presentation, a framework for integrating vibration-based structural health monitoring data into the optimization of inspection and maintenance of deteriorating structural systems is presented. The framework is demonstrated in an illustrative example considering a steel frame subject to fatigue.
In this presentation, we discuss the potential of probabilistic approaches to the design and assessment of offshore foundations. The potential is demonstrated in a numerical example considering a laterally loaded monopile. As an outlook, we present a concept for managing the risk associated with installing large monopiles.
In this context, component-related investigations (FOSTA-P1311/IGF-Nr. 20162 N) focusing on welding residual stress evolution during local thermal gouging and rewelding of S500MLO and S960QL are carried out using in-situ digital image correlation (DIC) and ex-situ X-ray diffraction methods (XRD).

Influence of Hydrogen Uptake and Diffusion in Structural Components in the Field of Renewable Energy
(2021)
Great efforts are invested worldwide in the development of efficient electrolysis processes, fuel cells technologies and hydrogen transport and storage infrastructures. This includes the exploitation of existing gas-grid infrastructure for the injection of hydrogen. Considering transport and storage facilities, the utilization of gaseous hydrogen can be divided into two main groups which are differentiating in the pressure regime. Fueling stations are operating in high pressure (>800 bar) and high purity and therefore use austenitic stainless steels in their compression systems. On the other hand, existing gas infrastructure where the natural gas is transported across long distances is usually operating with up to 300 bar. In this case the pipe-systems consist of several steel classes, mainly low alloyed steels in which the surface quality and the gas mixture are strongly varying.
Even though ingress of hydrogen can lead to catastrophic failures in all steels, its exact impact on the mechanical properties, as well as its interaction with the surface, microstructure and lattice and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Therefore, research on the impact of gaseous hydrogen in pressure vessels and pipes has clearly an integral part on the path to safe and sustainable use of the different components along the different chains. This becomes even more relevant considering the influence of impurities in the gas, e.g. sulfur and with the introduction of new production technologies, such as additive manufacturing, into the market.
Determination of these interactions and impact that might lead to the degradation of the properties can allow a safe use of steels in present and future hydrogen-based energy applications.
The following contribution gives an overview of the problem and introduction to the conventional and innovative tools used and developed nowadays to analyze it. For this purpose, materials were loaded with hydrogen by electrochemical means and under high pressure and elevated temperatures. The results presented provide an invaluable insight into the impact of hydrogen on the integrity of selected steels used in the two mentioned above applications. This work is part of an ongoing research in which mechanical, chemical, structural, and microstructural analyses tools are combined in-situ and ex-situ.
WAAM process influences on local microstructure and residual stresses in high-strength steels
(2021)
High-strength fine-grain structural steels have great potential for weight optimization of many modern engineering structures. Efficient manufacturing can be achieved here above all by Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM). First commercial high-strength welding consumables for WAAM are already available. Due to a lack of knowledge and guidelines for the industry regarding welding residual stresses and component safety in manufacturing and operation, their application is still severely limited. Residual stresses play a crucial role here, as the special microstructure of high-strength steels is sensitive to cold cracking.
For this reason, process- and material-related influences, as well as the design effects on residual stress formation, are being investigated in a project funded by the AiF (FOSTA P1380/IGF 21162 BG). This study focuses on determining the interactions between heat control during WAAM process, resulting hardness, microstructure, and residual stresses, analyzed by X-ray diffraction. Welding experiments using geometrically similar AM specimens show that, with regard to the heat input, the energy per unit length in particular leads to significantly affected cooling times and microstructures and causes pronounced localized effects in terms of residual stresses in the upper weld beads.
This study gives an overview on the important field of joining processes for component fabrication in hydrogen technologies. For that reason, the current need and future research and developement activites are highlighted for the different technological field of hydrogen generation, storage, transport and use. In addition, the emerging field of additive manufacturing is included. Finally, some remarks are given for necessary changes in the standardization and its challenges.
The objective of this work is to find a method that describes the degree of damage from an impact experiment. This experiment was performed on Composite Pressure Vessels (CPV) in order to find the correlation of impact damage to the residual burst pressure. Computed Tomography (CT) approach was used to capture the before and after impact condition of the CPVs. The Wasserstein function was used to calculate how much the after impact image has differed from the original one. In the end, a good correlation was obtained to the residual burst pressure. The smaller the Wasserstein distance is, the higher the residual burst pressure would be and vice versa.
Increasing environmental problems with conventional energy technology are stimulating the demand for alternative energy solutions. With air quality reaching catastrophic levels in large cities worldwide, Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles offer the ideal combination of clean power with the amenities of electric drives. Hydrogen use on vehicles, nevertheless, also raises some issues about safe handling. As fuel cells and hydrogen applications, including vehicles, approach technological maturity, developing their business cases becomes crucial in introducing them to the consumer markets.
The Joint European Summer School JESS 2021 addresses these issues by offering high quality graduate level courses on selected topics of vehicle technology, innovation & business development, safe handling of hydrogen, and modelling. This series of summer schools has been ongoing since 2004 and targets an audience of university students (MSc and PhD levels) and post-doctoral researchers. We also welcome more experienced researchers and engineers wishing to expand their general knowledge, for instance, to suit a newly acquired position or collect credits for Continuous Professional Development (CPD). The course content is tailored to the needs of a diverse audience: newcomers to the field, experienced students, and young professionals working at the forefront of fuel cell and hydrogen applications.
