1,3,5-Tris-(2,3-dibromopropyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-trione (TDBP-TAZTO) is an emerging brominated flame retardant which is widely used in several plastic materials (electric and electronic equipment, musical instruments, automotive components).
However, until today, no photochemical studies as well as the identification of possible phototransformation products (PTPs) were described in literature. Therefore, in this study, UV-(C) and simulated sunlight irradiation experiments were performed to investigate the photolytic degradation of TDBP-TAZTO and to identify relevant PTPs for the first time. The UV-(C) Irradiation experiments show that the photolysis reaction follows a first-order kinetic model. Based on this, the photolysis rate constant k as well as the half-life time t1/2 were calculated to be k = (41 ± 5 ×10−3) min−1 and t1/2=(17±2) min. In comparison, a minor degradation of TDBP-TAZTO and no formed phototransformation products were obtained under simulated sunlight. In order to clarify the photochemical behavior, different chemicals were added to investigate the influence on indirect photolysis: (i) H2O2 for generation of hydroxyl radicals and (ii) two quenchers (2-propanol, sodium azide) for scavenging oxygen species which were formed during the irradiation experiments. Herein, nine previously unknown PTPs of TDBP-TAZTO were detected under UV-(C) irradiation and identified by HPLC-(HR)MS. As a result, debromination, hydroxylation, and dehydrobromination reactions could be presumed as the main degradation pathways by high-resolution mass spectrometry. The direct as well as the OH radical-induced indirect photolysis were observed.
The initial focus of this research was on the development of a general workflow for the documentation and monitoring of historical stained glass windows using structured light scanning. Therefore windows from different churches, time periods and with different corrosion and damage phenomena were scanned before and after conservation measures. To evaluate the execution of the restoration measures the data was compared using 3D inspection software to examine the differences in geometry between the two scans. Various problems had to be solved, for example, how to deal with heavily reflective surfaces and the extreme contrast between light and dark surfaces, as seen in the borders between ‘Schwarzlot’ painting and plain glass. The application of materials for matting the surfaces, such as Cyclododecane spray, was impossible due to the high accuracy of the surface measurement required for 3D inspection. Regarding the contrast differences of the surfaces, the creation of exposure fusions and the use of polarization filters to reduce reflections were tested. In addition to the general problems encountered when recording translucent surfaces, the historical glasses caused additional problems in calculating surface comparisons. For example, the windows have to be moved and turned around several times, both during the conservation process and while scanning, causing deformations of the geometry due to the flexible lead rods allowing a certain degree of movement.
Der Fokus des Arbeitsfelds ist die messtechnisch fundierte Anwendung der 3D-Verfahrenskombination zur Lösung vielfältiger Messaufgaben mit optimaler Datenqualität für interne und externe Kunden.
Das setzt insbesondere eine jeweils problembezogene Messmethodik voraus. Dazu setzen wir kameragestützte 3D-Koordinatenmessverfahren ein, die auf dem fotogrammetrischen Prinzip der Bildtriangulation beruhen. Darunter fallen folgende miteinander flexibel kombinierbare Verfahrensmodifikationen: Mehrbildfotogrammetrie, Messadapter für Geometriemerkmale, Streifenprojektionsverfahren, statische bis hochdynamische Stereofotogrammetrie auf Punktebasis oder aufgabenangepasster Oberflächenmuster und mechanisch-optische Taster.

To improve conservation practices of Arabic manuscripts we have assessed the feasibility of the recipes collected from many Arabic sources on bookmaking and reproduced the most common inks. Ink samples were then artificially aged and analysed using an array of analytical techniques, mostly non-invasive, in order to build a database of Arabic inks and their ingredients and also to verify the detection limits of the portable equipment employed.
We will show procedures and problems concerning the identification of ink types and ingredients using reflectography (in Vis, IR and UV), X-Ray Fluorescence, Infrared and Raman spectroscopy. The focus will be in particular on squid ink and mixed inks – both in the form of carbon inks with the addition of tannins and of a mixture of carbon and iron gall inks – which are particularly difficult to detect. We will also examine the results of iron gall inks made with iron filings or nails instead of vitriol, the various precursor used to extract gallic acid that are mentioned in the sources as surrogates of gall nuts.

First, we will provide an overview of the sources [1-2] employed in the study – dating from 9th to 14th century, although the manuscripts in which they can be found dates up to the 20th century – with an eye on the ink typologies (real and perceived by the compilers). Then we will show how, by reproducing the recipes, it was possible to shed light on some oddities in the procedures and the choice of ingredients. In the end we will discuss problems concerning the identification of ink types and ingredients using reflectography (in Vis, IR and UV), X-Ray Fluorescence, Infrared and Raman spectroscopy. The focus will be in particular on mixed inks – both in the form of carbon inks with the addition of tannins and of a mixture of carbon and iron gall inks – which are particularly difficult to detect [3]. Magnesium is a major element in the hydrosphere and biosphere and plays important roles in (bio-) geochemical and physiological cycles. Mg has three stable isotopes, 24Mg, 25Mg and 26Mg. It is due to their relatively large mass difference (~8% between) that isotope fractionation leads to slight variations of isotope amount ratios in biological, environmental and geological samples. Traditionally, isotope ratios are measured by mass spectrometric methods. Their drawbacks include the high costs for instruments and their operation, experienced operators and elaborate time-consuming chromatographic sample preparation.
Recently, optical spectrometric methods have been proposed as faster and low-cost alternative for the analysis of isotope ratios of selected elements by means of high-resolution continuum source molecular absorption spectrometry (HR-CS-MAS), and laser ablation molecular isotopic spectrometry (LAMIS).
For the determination of Mg isotope ratios in selected rock reference materials, the molecular spectrum of the in-situ generated MgF and MgO molecules were studied and their results compared with MC-ICP-MS. By HR-CS-MAS, samples were dissolved by acid digestion and Mg isotopes analyzed with and without matrix. The absorption spectrum was recorded for MgF for the electronic transitions X 2Σ → A 2 Πi, and X 2Σ → B 2Σ+. In the case of LAMIS, we investigated the MgF molecule for the electronic transition A 2Πi → X 2Σ, as well as direct analysis by the MgO molecule for the electronic transition A 1Π+ → X 1Σ. The MgF and MgO spectra are described as the linear combination of their isotopic components or isotopologues: 24MgF, 25MgF, and 26MgF for the MgF and 24MgO, 25MgO, and 26MgO for the MgO. The isotope analysis was done by deconvolution of the MgF spectrum by partial least square regression (PLS) calibrated with enriched isotope spikes. Results were accurate with precisions ranging between 0.2 ‰ and 0.8 ‰ (2 SD, n= 10) for HR-CS-GFMAS. No statistically significant differences were observed for samples w/o matrix extraction. On the other hand, LAMIS allows the direct analysis of solid samples with the extended possibility of direct analysis, however the precision is lower due the lack of solid isotopic calibration standards.
The mechanochemical formation of the ionic cocrystals of glucose (Glc) and sodium salts is presented. Products are formed by co-milling Glc with three sodium salts (NaCl, NaBr, NaI). The reaction pathways of the three ionic cocrystals were investigated using our tandem approach comprising a combination of in situ synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy.
The mechanochemical formation of the ionic cocrystals of glucose (Glc) and sodium salts Glc2NaCl·H2O (1) and Glc2NaX (X = Br (2), I (3)) is presented. Products are formed by co-milling Glc with three sodium salts (NaCl, NaBr, NaI). The ionic cocrystals were obtained under both neat grinding and liquid-assisted grinding conditions, the later found to accelerate the reaction kinetics. The crystal structures of the ionic cocrystals (2) and (3) were solved from powder X-ray diffraction data. The structure solution contrasts with the structure of Glc2NaCl·H2O (1) where the electron density at three halide crystallographic sites is modeled as of being the intermediate between water molecule and a chloride ion. The reaction pathways of the three ionic cocrystals were investigated in real time using our tandem approach comprising a combination of in situ synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The results indicate the rapid formation of each cocrystal directly from their respective starting materials without any intermediate moiety formation. The products were further characterized by DTA-TG and elemental analysis.
