Agar gel pads have been used for electrochemical measurements for some time. For zinc in particular, a standard method for measuring the stability of the corrosion product layer is being established. The main interpretation factor is the corrosion product layer resistance RL, as it is easy to determine and interpret. A high corrosion product layer resistance indicates a high level of protection. However, it is not yet known how low the corrosion product layer resistance is for freshly produced zinc samples. As zinc is highly active, it reacts immediately with the environment to form a corrosion product layer, which affects the corrosion product layer resistance. The addition of zinc acetate to the agar gel pads prevents the formation of a surface layer and destroys existing ones.
This makes it possible to measure an almost corrosion product-free zinc surface. This is important in defining the range of corrosion product layer resistance for a protective surface.
Since geothermal wells are a feasible energy source to replace fossil fuel supply, many technologies have been developed to take advantage of geothermal energy. Nevertheless, service conditions in geothermal facilities are in many cases extreme in terms of corrosion due to the chemical composition of hydrothermal fluids and temperatures. Therefore, materials selection based on preliminary material qualification is essential to guarantee a secure and reliable operation of the facilities. During operation of a geothermal research facility in Groß Schönebeck copper and lead effects have been found downhole. Occurring mechanisms and measures to prevent precipitation or scaling needed to be investigated as well as potential influences of such precipitates on corrosion resistance of metallic materials used for equipment.
This contribution deals with the evaluation of the corrosion behavior of carbon steel and corrosion resistant alloys in copper and/or lead containing artificial geothermal water, simulating the conditions in the Northern German Basin.
The behavior of these materials in an artificial geothermal water obtained by electrochemical measurements and exposure tests are presented. While carbon steel exhibits precipitation and deposition, higher alloyed material shows different response to such species and a higher resistance in saline geothermal water.
Basing on these results the suitability of the investigated corrosion resistant alloy is given for use in such conditions, whereas carbon steel creates difficulties due to its susceptibility to Cu- and Pb-precipitation.
Significant Cu-deposition and precipitation only occurred in combination with carbon steel. High-alloyed materials prevent the disturbing Cu-agglomeration. Pb-deposition and precipitation only occurred in combination with carbon steel. No negative Pb-effect could be observed in combination with high-alloyed steels. High alloyed corrosion resistant alloys are suitable and shall be chosen for future design of the piping system, either in massive or in cladded form, to prevent unwanted interactions with brine components.
This paper reports results from in situ electrochemical X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) studies of the corrosion processes on model thin iron films in the presence of iron reducing bacteria Shewanella putrefaciens. Here we investigate the electrochemical activity of two cultures grown in the presence and absence of Fe(III) citrate in the culture medium. The XANES spectra and the OCP data of the Fe sample incubated with the culture grown in absence of Fe(III) did not show any significant changes during twenty hours of monitoring. In the case of the culture grown in Fe(III) containing medium, an accelerated dissolution of the iron film was observed together with the formation of a mixed Fe(II)-Fe(III) hydroxide surface layer. The open circuit potential (OCP) steadily approached the free corrosion potential of iron in neutral chloride containing electrolytes, indicating a continuous dissolution process without passivation.
The second edition of this textbook on physical electrochemistry, written by two experienced teachers of physical chemistry, corrosion engineering and materials science and engineering, covers the current knowledge which should be transferred to students of these fields.
In 20 chapters the fundamentals of electrochemistry, the most important electrochemical measurement techniques and applications of electrochemistry are covered.
It can be concluded that this study fulfills its intension of “serving as a key textbook in undergraduate courses” dealing with electrochemistry and being “a reference source for graduated students, researchers and engineers” interested in this field. Teachers will find sufficient content for preparing lectures on this topic. Even self‐learning is well supported by the clear structure, presented content and provided sources for further reading.
Lessons learned from long-term corrosion investigations and –monitoring in saline thermal waters
(2018)
Investigations of corrosion processes in geothermal well in Groß Schönebeck showed
Most tested materials (apart of carbon steel) proved to be corrosion resistant within the installations.
- Stability of coatings cannot be guaranteed.
- Main risk: Electrochemical corrosion of carbon steel casing with dissolved Cu resulting in clogging the reservoir
The corrosion prevention strategy requires use of higher alloyed casing materials depending on resistance parameters, availability and economic feasibility.
