Effective flame retardancy is indispensable in almost all applications of thermally insulating foams in building & construction. The trend to halogen-free materials requires new solutions and proper understanding of structure-activity relationships. Here, we contribute investigations on halogen-free FRs for rigid PIR foams and compare different FRs: isocyanate-reactive vs non-reactive, phosphinate (DOPO) vs phosphonate (BPPO) vs phosphate. It is demonstrated that the chemical structure of the FRs has significant effects on heat emission and char formation.
