Selective Catalytic Reduction of Nitric Oxide by Ammonia over Egg-Shell MnOx/NaY Composite Catalysts
(2002)
A novel composite catalyst system for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx by NH3 is described operating at temperatures lower than 470 K in the presence of water with NO conversions of 80100% at space velocities of 30,00050,000 h-1. The catalyst is prepared by egg-shell precipitation of MnO2 on the external surface of zeolite NaY. Structural and thermal stability of precipitated MnO2 as well as of the MnO2/NaY composite catalyst were characterized by N2 adsorption, X-ray diffraction, laser Raman spectroscopy, temperature-programmed reduction, and electron microscopy. MnO2 precipitated on zeolite NaY (15 wt% loading) retained its amorphous state up to calcination temperatures of 775 K. The zeolite component remained structurally intact. Calcination at higher temperatures destroyed the zeolite structure and transformed MnO2 into Mn3O4. DRIFT spectroscopic investigations revealed the presence of symmetric O=NON=O species formally corresponding to N2O3 on the composite catalyst after contact with NO. Catalytic measurements under integral flow conditions showed that the catalyst performance is associated with a close coupling of nitrite formation and its drain off from equilibria with NO/NO2 and nitrate by ammonia. Several results are in line with the diazotation mechanism, including NH3 protonation to NH4+, whereas prevailing Lewis acid sites should enable NH3 activation via amide species, thus leading to a parallel amide/nitrosamide SCR reaction route. The activity-temperature profile fulfills the requirements of a low-temperature NOx reduction catalyst for mobile diesel engines if an ammonia supply is implemented on board, e.g., by urea decomposition.
Effects of Heat Treatment on the Structure of Thermal Plasma Synthesized SiCN Composite Nanopowders
(2003)
SiCN composite nanopowders with different chemical composition and characteristics were synthesized by the RF induction plasma at atmospheric pressure. Frequently the as-produced powders exhibit a high degree of chemical disorder or structural defects. Because the composition and the microstructure of starting powders have a great influence on the properties of composite ceramics, the changes of chemical composition, crystallization, and morphology of the as-produced powders during heat treatment up to 1500 °C were investigated in detail.
Ever larger high pressure die castings (HPDC) with ever thinner walls raise the issue of casting defects. Properties of components are often strongly influenced by inner porosity. In the case of high pressure die castings, shrinkage and gas porosity occur. Two possibilities of characterizing porosity - by microscopy and acitve thermography - are dealt with in two articles. In the previous article, the microscopic investigations are presented. In this article, first the feasibility of thermographic detection will be discussed based on simulations and, thereafter, the experimental determination of porosity with active thermography will be described.

During Rutherford cable production the wires are plastically deformed and their initially round shape is distorted. Using X-ray absorption tomography we have determined the 3D shape of an unreacted Nb3Sn 11 T dipole Rutherford cable, and of a reacted and impregnated Nb3Sn cable double stack. State-of-theart image processing was applied to correct for tomographic artefacts caused by the large cable aspect ratio, for the segmentation of the individual wires and subelement bundles inside the wires, and for the calculation of the wire cross sectional area and shape variations. The 11 T dipole cable cross section oscillates by 2% with a frequency of 1.24 mm (1/80 of the transposition pitch length of the 40 wire cable). A comparatively stronger cross sectional area variation is observed in the individual wires at the thin edge of the keystoned cable where the wire aspect ratio is largest.
Larger high pressure die castings (HPDC) and decreasing wall thicknesses are raising the issue of casting defects like pores in aluminum structures. Properties of components are often strongly influenced by inner porosity. As these products are being established more and more in lightweight construction (e.g. automotive and other transport areas), non-destructive testing methods, which can be applied fast and on-site, are required for quality assurance. In this contribution, the application of active thermography for the direct detection of larger pores is demonstrated. The analysis of limits and accuracy of the method are completed by numerical simulation and the method is validated using computed
tomography.

Microplastic (MP) contamination in natural water circulation is a concern for environmental issues and human health. Various types of polymer materials have been identified and were detected in MP analytic test procedures. Beyond MP polymer type, particle size and form play a major role in water analysis due to possible negative toxicologic effects on flora and fauna. However, the correct quantitative measurement of MP size distribution over several orders of magnitude is strongly influenced by sample preparation, filtration materials and processes, and microanalytical techniques, as well as data acquisition and analysis. In this paper, a reference methodology is presented aiming at an improved quantitative analysis of MP particles. An MP analysis workflow is demonstrated including all steps from reference materials to sample preparation, filtration handling, and MP particle size distribution analysis. Background-corrected particle size distributions (1–1000 µm) have been determined for defined polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) reference samples. Microscopically measured particle numbers and errors have been cross-checked with the total initial mass. In particular, defined reference MP samples (PE, PET) are initially characterized and applied to filtration experiments. Optical microscopy imaging on full-area Si filters with subsequent image analysis algorithms is used for statistical particle size distribution analysis. To quantify the effects of handling and filtration, several blind tests with distilled water are carried out to determine the particle background for data evaluation. Particle size distributions of PE and PET reference samples are qualitatively and quantitatively reproduced with respect to symmetry, and maximum and cut-off diameter of the distribution. It is shown that especially MP particles with a radius of >50 µm can be detected and retrieved with high reliability. For particle sizes <50 µm, a significant interference with background contamination is observed. Data from blank samples allows a correction of background contaminations. Furthermore, for enhanced sampling statistics, the recovery of the initial amount of MP will be qualitatively shown. The results are intended as an initial benchmark for MP analytics quality. This quality is based on statistical MP particle distributions and covers the complete analytic workflow starting from sample preparation to filtration and detection. Microscopic particle analysis provides an important supplement for the evaluation of established spectroscopic methods such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy or Raman spectroscopy.
Coordination chemistry was applied to deposit pyridine-functionalized gold nanoparticles on silicon substrates. The particles were synthesized through the Brust/Schiffrin route with a subsequent ligand exchange reaction yielding well-defined particles of two different sizes. Multilayer deposition was carried out on a pyridine-terminated SAM, anchored on a hydroxyl-terminated silicon surface. Analogously, Hunter/Vögtle-type tetralactam macrocycle multilayers were deposited as well as mixed layers containing both either in an alternating sequence or as a macrocycle multilayer with a terminating nanoparticle layer. These composite layers were examined with respect to their ability to bind squaraine axles in the macrocycle cavities. The amount of guest bound is higher for the composite layer with alternating macrocycles and nanoparticles.
Structuring of thin-film photovoltaic modules requires basic knowledge of the laser – thin-film interaction in order to adapt the accessible laser parameters, like wavelength, power, repetition rate and scribing speed whilst taking into account the specific material properties of the layer. We have studied the nanosecond laserablation behavior of corresponding layers (i) of silicon based thin-film solar cells with a-Si/µc-Si tandem absorber type and (ii) of back contact and absorber layer of CIGSe solar cells. The respective ablation threshold fluences were determined as integrative parameters describing the specific laser – material interaction. For the threshold determination we used two different methods and developed a new analytical approach taking into account scribing through the glass substrate as it is preferred for most structuring processes. This was done by analyzing the thin film ablation results by means of optical microscopy, profilometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Moreover, we determined the incubation coefficient of the regarded material layers which allows us to predict quantitatively the influence of the spot overlap on the scribing threshold.
Manufacturing of CIGSe thin film solar modules involves typically one laser structuring step (P1) and two mechanical structuring steps (P2 and P3) for serial interconnection. In our approach, complete laser structuring is successfully demonstrated by application of short nanosecond laser pulses (<10 ns) with a single, visible wavelength of 532 nm. The P1 and the P3 trenches are scribed by induced and direct ablation, respectively. For the P2 scribe, the thermal input of the ns laser pulses is used to transform the CIGSe absorber layer locally into a highly conductive compound to provide proper electrical interconnection. These findings promise further simplification and flexibility to thin film solar cell production.
One wavelength fits all

Structuring of Thin-film Solar Cells with a Single Laser Wavelength Structuring of a PV module into a number of cells is necessary to lower the current and to increase the voltage, and is typically accomplished with nanosecond laser pulses of different wavelengths. Duetothe many available laser sources, complex and expensive scribing Setups are necessary. To overcome this a concept for laser structuring of thin-film PV modules using a single wavelength allows prediction ofthe ablation behaviourfor a given laser pulse energy.
