A combination of broadband dielectric (10-2 Hz109 Hz) and specific heat (10-3 Hz2×103 Hz) spectroscopy is employed to study the molecular dynamics of the glass-forming nematic liquid crystal E7 in a wide temperature range. In the region of the nematic phase the dielectric spectra show two relaxation processes which are expected theoretically: The δ relaxation which corresponds to rotational fluctuations of the molecules around its short axis and the tumbling mode at higher frequencies than the former one. For both processes the temperature dependence of the relaxation rates follows the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann formula which is characteristic for glassy dynamics. By applying a detailed data analysis, it is shown that close to the glass transition the tumbling mode has a much steeper temperature dependence than the δ process. The former has a Vogel temperature which is by 30 K higher than that of the δ relaxation. Specific heat spectroscopy gives one relaxation process in its temperature and frequency dependence which has to be assigned to the α relaxation (dynamic glass transition). The unique and detailed comparison of the temperature dependence of the dielectric and the thermal relaxation rates delivers unambiguously that the dielectric tumbling mode has to be related to the dynamic glass transition.
High Speed, High Resolution imaging spectrometers based on pnCCDs for XRF and XRD applications
(2016)
For many years pnCCDs have been well known as X-ray detectors for spectroscopic imaging in many fields of science: X-Ray Fluorescence analysis (XRF), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) with light sources in large accelerator facilities as well as with laboratory light sources or with X-rays from celestial sources in X-ray astronomy. A brief introduction in GEXRF (Grazing Emission XRF) measurements with a laboratory laser produced plasma source will be given, PIXE (Particle Induced X-ray Emission) measurements and D2XRF (Double Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence) and Slicing experiments with pnCCDs coupled to polycapillary optics performed at the BESSY synchrotron will be shown. Energy-dispersive Laue diffraction with ultra-hard X-rays for the analysis of defects in metals will conclude the overview of spectroscopic X-ray imaging measurements in the field of structure and dynamics of matter.
Mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) such as rotaxanes and catenanes are capable of mechanical motion on the nanoscale and are therefore promising prototypes for molecular machines in recent nanotechnology. However, most of the existing examples are isotropically distributed in solution, which prohibits concerted movement and with it the generation of macroscopic effects. Thus, arranging them in ordered arrays is of huge interest in recent research. We report the deposition of quite densely packed multilayers of tetralactam macrocycles on gold surfaces by metal-coordinated layer-by-layer self-assembly. Linear dichroism effects in angle-resolved NEXAFS spectra indicate a preferential orientation of the macrocycles. The sequence of the metal ions can be programmed by the use of different transition metal ions at each deposition step. Additionally, reversible on-surface pseudorotaxane formation was successfully realized by repeated uptake and release of axle molecules inside the macrocycles cavities.
