The ability of industrial X-ray computed tomography (CT) to scan an object with several internal and external features at once causes increasing adoption in dimensional metrology. In order to evaluate the quality of a measurement value, the task-specific measurement uncertainty has to be determined. Currently, VDI/VDE 2630 part 2.1 gives a guideline to determine the uncertainty of CT measurements experimentally by conducting repeated measurements. This is costly and time-consuming. Thus, the aim is to determine the task-specific measurement uncertainty numerically by simulations (e. g. according to the guide to expression of uncertainty in measurement (GUM) Supplement 1). To achieve that, a digital twin is necessary. This contribution presents a simple first approach how a digital twin can be built. In order to evaluate this approach, a study comparing measurements and simulations of different real CT systems was carried out by determining the differences between the measurement results of the digital twin and of the measurement results of the real-world CT systems. The results have shown a moderate agreement between real and simulated data. To improve on this aspect, a standardized method to characterize CT systems and methods to implement CT parameters into the simulation with sufficient accuracy will be developed.
Stress is a normal part of life for fungi, which can survive in environments considered inhospitable or hostile for other organisms. Due to the ability of fungi to respond to, survive in, and transform the environment, even under severe stresses, many researchers are exploring the mechanisms that enable fungi to adapt to stress. The International Symposium on Fungal Stress (ISFUS) brings together leading scientists from around the world who research fungal stress. This article discusses presentations given at the third ISFUS, held in Sao Jose dos Campos, Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2019, thereby summarizing the state-of-the-art knowledge on fungal stress, a field that includes microbiology, agriculture, ecology, biotechnology, medicine, and astrobiology.
The structural properties of a borosilicate glass with nominal 16 mol% Na2O, 10 mol% B2O3 and 74mol% SiO2 and water contents between 0 and 8wt% H2O (0–22 mol% H2O)were investigated with IR, Raman and 11BMAS NMR spectroscopy. In addition to the pronounced OH stretching vibration band of weakly H-bonded species at 3580 cm−1 the MIR spectra show a triplet at 2900, 2350 and 1750 cm−1, similar as observed in water-bearing silicate glasses. These bands are assigned to OH groups and water molecules which are strongly H-bonded, to non-bridging oxygen. Water species contents determined from absorption bands in the NIR at 5200 cm−1 (molecular H2O), 4700 cm−1 (B\\OH), and 4500 cm−1 (Si\\OH) indicate that hydroxyl groups dominate up to ~6 wt% total H2O. Based on the absorption coefficients known from literature for silicate and borate glasses the B\\OH/Si\\OH ratio is estimated to be ≈0.8.
As indicated by density, Raman and NMR data the incorporation ofwater has strong structural impacts in particular at low water contents up to 3 wt% H2O. While the nominally dry glasses still contain a significant fraction (12%) of three-fold coordinated boron, almost all boron is four-fold coordinated in hydrous glasses. The increase of band components in the Raman spectra near 900 cm−1 relative to the region N 1050 cm−1 gives evidence for depolymerization of the network upon hydration. Fitting of the spectra with Gaussians implies that silica tetrahedra with two non-bridging oxygen (Q2) are preferentially formed by reactionwithwater on expense of tetrahedra linked to four tetrahedra (Q4).
Quantitative Analysis and 2D/3D Elemental Imaging of Cocoa Beans Using X‑ray Fluorescence Techniques
(2023)
As an important raw material for the confectionery industry, the cocoa bean (Theobroma cacao L.) has to meet certain legal requirements in terms of food safety and maximum contaminant levels in order to enter the cocoa market. Understanding the enrichment and distribution of essential minerals but also toxic metals is of utmost importance for improving the nutritional quality of this economically important raw food material. We present three X-ray fluorescence (XRF) techniques for elemental bio-imaging of intact cocoa beans and one additional XRF technique for quantitative analysis of cocoa pellets. The interrelation of all the methods presented gives a detailed picture of the content and 3D-resolved distribution of elements in complete cocoa beans for the first time.
To accelerate the growth of Industry 4.0 technologies, the digitalization of mechanical testing laboratories as one of the main data-driven units of materials processing industries is introduced in this paper. The digital lab infrastructure consists of highly detailed and standard-compliant materials testing knowledge graphs for a wide range of mechanical testing processes, as well as some tools that enable the efficient ontology development and conversion of heterogeneous materials’ mechanical testing data to the machine-readable data of uniform and standardized structures. As a basis for designing such a digital lab, the mechanical testing ontology (MTO) was developed based on the ISO 23718 and ISO/IEC 21838-2 standards for the semantic representation of the mechanical testing experiments, quantities, artifacts, and report data. The trial digitalization of materials mechanical testing lab was successfully performed by utilizing the developed tools and knowledge graph of processes for converting the various experimental test data of heterogeneous structures, languages, and formats to standardized Resource Description Framework (RDF) data formats. The concepts of data storage and data sharing in data spaces were also introduced and SPARQL queries were utilized to evaluate how the introduced approach can result in the data retrieval and response to the competency questions. The proposed digital materials mechanical testing lab approach allows the industries to access lots of trustworthy and traceable mechanical testing data of other academic and industrial organizations, and subsequently organize various data-driven research for their faster and cheaper product development leading to a higher performance of products in engineering and ecological aspects.
