(2014)
Confronted with indications that the SNML could be a forgery, we reviewed data from our previous analyses again and supplemented it with additional readings. Again, we were short of time. During the first measurement campaign we employed X-ray fluorescence analysis to identify specific trace elements and thereby characterize different writing and drawing materials. In the new measurement campaign, we once again carried out an extensive X-ray fluorescence analysis. In addition, this time we also employed reflection infrared spectroscopy and confocal microscopy.
As with earlier measurement campaigns, we were determined not to take samples. Throughout the process, we have continued to regard the object in question as unique, and as such not to he physically altered in any way. Throughout the analysis, however, it has been clear that non-destructive testing provides less comprehensive results than methods that require testing physical samples. The examinations described below were carried out not only on the SNML, but also on reference objects. The most important of these in this framework was the SN Graz, which is generally accepted as authentic. The following illustrates the results of the analysis in detail.
The majority of the objects found in the textiles collection at the German Historical Museum in Berlin have been treated with different biocides at various points in the past. Prior to this study, the presence of organochlorinated pesticides in rooms and storage cabinets had already been proven in an analysis of air samples that employed gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy. To estimate the risks these toxins pose to both collections and museum staff, we conducted a field study with the help of a portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. In this study, we present an attempt at a reliable quantitative analysis. In addition to chlorine, other potentially hazardous elements such as lead, arsenic, and mercury were found in the majority of the objects. In some cases, however, it has to be taken into account that the detected elements might have originated from manufacturing processes rather than biocide treatments. Such knowledge is a crucial prerequisite to proper risk prediction.
Das Schwarzlot in der Hinterglasmalerei - Zerstörungsfreie Untersuchung von Kunst- und Kulturgut
(2009)

Fe K-edge XANES measurements were performed to determine the oxidation state of iron in iron gall inks. These data are used to investigate the relationship between the Fe oxidation state and ink corrosion in historical manuscripts. The oxidation state is determined using the pre-edge based on a general variation trend that was derived from model compounds and validated here independently on a suite of samples with known oxidation state and Fe in octahedral coordination (i.e. similar to Fe in gall ink). As long as suitable references for the pure ferric and ferrous state of iron gall inks cannot be pointed out, the analysis of the pre-edge of the Fe K-edge represents the only way to acquire absolute values for the Fe oxidation state (Fe3+/Fetot) with spatial resolution for this usually non-crystalline compound. Fe3+/Fetot values for the ink samples vary between ca. 0.7 and 1.0. Spatially resolved analyses performed across ink strokes of various historical manuscripts as well as newly made samples did not reveal any systematic spatial dependence. On average, historical samples that were exposed to conservation treatments show a more oxidized state. However, the measurements demonstrate explicitly that the exposure to X-rays during the XANES acquisition affects the oxidation state of Fe in most iron gall inks.

A new fundamental parameter based calibration procedure for micro X-ray fluorescence spectrometers
(2011)
Fundamental parameter based quantification of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) measurement data requires an accurate knowledge of the spectrometer parameters, including the spectral distribution of the excitation radiation. In case of micro-XRF where a polycapillary optic is utilized in the excitation channel this distribution is changed due to the transmission properties of the lens. A new calibration procedure, based on fluorescence data of thin standard samples, was developed to determine the excitation spectrum, i.e., the product of the X-ray tube spectrum and the transmission of the used X-ray optic of a micro-XRF setup. The calibration result was validated by the quantitative analyses of certified multi-element reference standards and shows uncertainties in the order of 2% for main components, 10% for minor elements and 25% for trace elements. The influence of secondary order effects like Coster–Kronig transitions and cascade effects is analyzed and the accuracy of fundamental parameters in common databases is discussed.
In this study we demonstrate the possibility to identify the production area of the scrolls, coupling non-destructive quantitative analysis of race elements to spectroscopic investigation of the inks. This approach, that allowed us to determine the Dead Sea area as origin of 1QHodayot, is of general validity.
Oltrogge 1998).
The investigation of an ancient Chinese ceramic served to further develop and validate fundamental parameter-based quantitation procedures in reference-free x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis. The XRF measurements of this sample were performed at the four-crystal monochromator beamline of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) at the BESSY II synchrotron radiation facility employing different excitation energies. The parallel processing of the XRF spectra recorded at different excitation energies provides a means to simultaneously evaluate relevant fundamental parameters and secondary enhancement processes such as those induced by photoelectrons. Employing well-characterized and absolutely calibrated instrumentation, all experimental parameters involved in XRF are known for small relative uncertainties allowing for a completely reference-free quantitation. Apart from traces of rare earth elements, the analytical results of the Chinese ceramic achieved by reference-free XRF are in line with target values given within a proficiency test of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) involving atomic and nuclear methods.
