Simultaneous multielemental analysis of crude oils by high-resolutions absorption spectrometry
(2019)
When crude oil arrives at a refinery it needs a lot of processing before it is suitable for cracking into lighter fractions. Sulfur has to be extracted to meet ultra-low sulfur legislation for most of the fuel grades, and desalination is a crucial process as chlorine within salts is corrosive to refinery equipment. Measuring the amounts of sulfur and chlorine within crude oil is the first step in a complex clean-up process.
Heavy metals, such as vanadium, nickel and iron need to be removed too. These metals can poison the catalyst used to crack the oil into lighter fractions. This is costly as it reduces the useful life of the catalyst. Like chlorine, heavy metals also have a corrosive effect on the plant. There is some evidence that the presence of some metals in the final product can reduce performance.
A fast determination of elements and size of suspended particles is vital for diagnosis and safeguard of refinery equipment. However, sample preparation for current analytical methods consumes precious time and lost particle size information.
High-resolution continuum source graphite furnace absorption spectrometry (HR-CS-GFAS) is proposed as a fast analytical method for elemental determination in crude oils and potentially for simultaneous multielement and particle size analysis. This HR-CS-GFAS instrumentation is coupled to a modular simultaneous echelle spectrometer (MOSES) and provides a full optical window with high resolution (from 180 to 900 nm with bandwidth λ/170,000). By using this set-up, it is possible to generate a multiparameter 3D spectral image (atomic and molecular lines, isotopic shift, atomization delay, and intensities). The generated spectral images can be analyzed by multivariate regressions for the elemental and particle size analysis. Additionally, if several atomic and molecular lines are simultaneously measured, they may be used in multi-energy calibration (MEC), a method based on the use of many wavelengths of the same absorbing/emitting entity to improve the accuracy in analytical atomic spectrometry. This MEC approach combined with multivariate image analysis allows the quantification of selected elements (Si, Al, Ni, Fe, V, S, and Cl) and overcomes matrix effects.
Magnesium is a naturally occurring element that can be found in several mineral forms in the earth crust. This element presents three stable isotopes 24Mg, 25Mg and 26Mg with a natural abundance of 79%, 10%, and 11% respectively. It is due to their relatively large mass difference (~8% between 24Mg and 26Mg) that isotope fractionation leads to slight isotope amount ratio variations n(26Mg)/n(24Mg) in biological and geological samples. Traditionally, isotope amount ratios have been measured by mass spectrometric methods. However, drawbacks of these methods include the high costs for instruments and their operation, experienced operators and elaborate chromatographic sample preparation which are time-consuming. Recently, optical spectrometric methods have been proposed as faster and low-cost alternative for the analysis of isotope ratios of selected elements by means of high-resolution continuum source graphite furnace molecular absorption spectrometry (HR-CS-GFMAS) and laser ablation molecular isotopic spectrometry (LAMIS). For the determination of Mg isotope amount ratios, the molecular spectrum of the in-situ generated MgF and MgO molecules were studied. In the case of HR-CS-GFMAS, the absorption spectrum was recorded for MgF for the electronic transitions X 2Σ → A 2 Πi and X 2Σ → B 2Σ+ around wavelengths 358 nm and 268 nm respectively. In the case of LAMIS, it was studied the MgF molecule for the electronic transitions A 2Πi → X 2Σ as well as the MgO molecule for the electronic transition A 1Π+ → X 1Σ around 500 nm. The MgF and MgO spectra are composed by the linear combination of their isotopic components or isotopologues: 24MgF, 25MgF, and 26MgF for the MgF and 24MgO, 25MgO, and 26MgO for the MgO (F is monoisotopic, and the isotope composition of O is assumed as constant). By HR-CS-GFMAS the analysis of Mg was done by deconvolution of the MgF spectrum by a partial least square regression (PLS) calibrated with enriched isotope spikes. The isotope amount ratios in rock samples with and without matrix separation were analyzed. Resulting delta values were obtained with precisions ranging between 0.2-0.5 ‰. On the other hand, LAMIS allows the direct analysis of solid samples with the extended possibility of in-situ analysis. Main advantages, limitations, and scopes of both optical techniques are going to be discussed and compared with MC-ICP-MS.

The isotope analysis was done by deconvolution of the MgF spectrum by partial least square regression (PLS). A PLS model was built and calibrated with enriched isotope spikes and certified reference materials. Spectra data was preprocessed by a derivate of second order and venetian blinds cross-validation was employed for finding the optimum latent variables. Finally, the model was refined by a genetic algorithm which identified the best subset of variables for a precise and accurate regression. Results are compatible with those obtained by MC-ICP-MS with an accuracy of ± 0.3‰ with uncertainties ranging between 0.02 to 0.6‰.
Mass spectrometric Methods MC-ICP-MS and TIMS) are without doubt the working horse of stable isotope analysis. However, drawbacks of these methods include the high costs for instruments and their operation, experienced operators and elaborate chromatographic sample preparation which are time consuming.
Optical spectrometric methods are proposed as faster and low-cost alternative for the analysis of isotope ratios of selected elements by means of high-resolution continuum source molecular absorption spectrometry (HR-CS-MAS) and laser ablation molecular isotopic spectrometry (LAMIS). First, stable isotope amount compositions of boron (B) and magnesium (Mg) were determined based on the absorption spectra of in-situ generated heteronuclear diatomic molecules (MH or MX) in graphite furnace HR-CS-MAS. The use of a modular simultaneous echelle spectrograph (MOSES) helps to find the maximal isotope shift in the diatomic molecular spectra produced in a graphite furnace by using isotopic spike solutions. Isotopes of boron (10B and 11B) were studied via their hydrides for the electronic transition X 1Σ+ → A 1Π. The spectrum of a given sample is a linear combination of the 10BH molecule and its isotopologue 11BH. Therefore, the isotopic composition of samples can be calculated by a partial least square regression (PLS). For this, a spectral library was built by using samples and spikes with known isotope composition. Boron isotope ratios measured by HR-CS-MAS are identical with those measured by mass spectrometric methods at the 0.15 ‰ level. Similar results were obtained for a multiple isotope system like Mg (24Mg, 25Mg, and 26Mg), where isotope shifts of their isotopologues can be resolved in the MgF molecule for the electronic transition X 2Σ → A 2 Πi. Finally, the application of molecular spectrometry via emission by LAMIS is compared and discussed.

On the other hand, LAMIS allows the direct analysis of solid samples with the extended possibility of direct analysis, however the precision is lower due the lack of solid isotopic calibration standards.
Boron and Magnesium present two and three stable isotopes respectevely. It is due to their relatively large mass difference (~ 10%) that isotope fractionation leads to considerable isotope amount ratio variations in the nature. These have been used as a proof of provenance of mineral and biological samples, to estimate a contamination source and to the determination of geological processes by erosion or subduction. Additionally, boron is employed in the nuclear industry due to the capability of its isotope 10B to thermal-neutron capture and therefore 10B enriched boric acid solutions are used in the cooling system of thermonuclear facilities and in the alloying of steel and carbides for protective shielding. Traditionally, isotope ratio variations have been determined by mass spectroscopic methods.
Here an alternative faster and low cost method for isotope ratio determination is proposed: high-resolution continuum source molecular absorption spectrometry (HR-CS-MAS). Isotope amount ratios have been determined by monitoring the absorption spectrum of boron monohydride (BH) for boron and Magnesium monofluoride (MgF) for magnesium in a graphite furnace HR-CS-MAS. Bands (0→0) and (1→1) were evaluated. Partial least square regression (PLS) for analysis of samples and reference materials were applied. For this, a spectral library with different isotopes ratios for PLS regression was built. Results obtained are metrologically compatible with those reported by mass spectrometric methods. Moreover, a precision and accuracy of the method of ± 0.5 ‰. This accuracy and precision is comparable with those obtained by thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) and multiple collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) for boron isotope ratio measurements
Magnesium (Mg) is a major element in a range of silicate and carbonate minerals, the hydrosphere and biosphere and plays important roles in (bio-) geochemical and physiological cycles. Mg has three stable isotopes, 24Mg, 25Mg and 26Mg with natural abundances of 79 %, 10 %, and 11 %, respectively. It is due to their relatively large mass difference (~8% between 24Mg and 26Mg) that isotope fractionation leads to slight variations of isotope amount ratios n(26Mg)/n(24Mg) in biological, environmental and geological samples. Traditionally, isotope ratios are measured by mass spectrometric methods and isotope ratios are expressed as deviation from an internationally agreed upon material, i.e. the zero-point of the δ-value scale. Drawbacks of this method include the high costs for instruments and their operation, experienced operators and elaborate, time-consuming chromatographic sample preparation.

Conventional fertilisers have their disadvantages as nutrient release is not synchronised with the demand of plants. Several approaches of "next generation fertilisers" are aiming at controlled nutrient release. Recycling fertilisers are often not soluble in water but fully plant available. They are suitable raw materials for the production of new types of controlled release fertilisers.

9-12% Cr ferritic-martensitic stainless steels are widely used as high temperature construction materials in fossil fueled power plants due to their excellent creep and oxidation resistance, but changes in electricity markets during the last two decades have considerably changed the typical working conditions of these facilities. The growing share of renewable energy sources in power generation forces most of these plants into flexible operation with frequent load shifts or shutdowns. These cyclic operation profiles constitute a major lifetime issue, raising the question which fundamental processes govern the reaction of ferritic-martensitic steels to cyclic load and temperature variations.
The present contribution reports on current findings obtained in a multidisciplinary project funded by German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) which combines cyclic mechanical and cyclic oxidation testing of different 9-12% Cr grades with detailed microstructural analyses and related micromechanical modeling.
In the present first part of our contribution, an overview will be given on the results obtained in the mechanical testing programme of the project. Mechanical analyses were carried out on P91 and (mainly) P92 steel grades, particularly looking at softening phenomena and lifetimes obtained in isothermal cyclic loading (low cycle fatigue, LCF), non-isothermal cyclic loading (thermo-mechanical fatigue, TMF), and service-like combinations of creep and fatigue periods. For this purpose, cylindrical specimens were extracted from thick-walled steam pipes, orthogonal to the pipe axis, and subjected to strain controlled cyclic loading (± 0.2 to ±0.5 % mechanical strain) to different degrees of softening at temperatures up to 620 °C.
The test results will be presented and discussed with a focus on the impact of hold periods (i.e. combined creep-fatigue conditions) on mechanical softening, lifetime and crack formation. Details on the microstructural evolution and their representation in a micromechanical model will be given in a second, complementary contribution to this conference.
The current trend towards cyclic, “flexible” operation of fossil-fueled power plants constitutes a major issue regarding lifetime and operational safety of the respective installations and their components, as was outlined in our complementary contribution (Part 1). The present contribution reports on the investigation of the microstructure evolution in cyclically loaded ferritic-martensitic steels and its representation in a physically-based micromechanical model.
For this purpose, specimens of P92 steel grade from the mechanical test programme outlined in our companion contribution (Part 1) were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), including backscattered diffraction (EBSD) mapping, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A novel method was implemented to improve angular resolution of EBSD scans. Additionally, a correlative microscopy approach was developed and used to correlate EBSD and TEM measurements on the same locations of thick regions of electron transparent specimens. By applying these techniques, a detailed quantitative microstructure description of the as-received material condition, namely in terms of subgrain morphology and dislocation density/distributions, was established. Comparisons of as-received and cyclically loaded conditions from tests interrupted at different stages of lifetime indicate a rapid redistribution of in-grain dislocations with a strong interaction between mobile dislocations and low angle grain boundaries (LABs).
The proposed micromechanical model is formulated in a viscoplastic self-consistent (VPSC) scheme, which is a mean-field approach that allows us to include the crystal details at the level of slip systems while avoiding the considerable computational costs of full-field approaches (such as the classical crystal plasticity finite element analysis). Being physically-based, the model uses dislocation densities and includes the interaction between dislocations, e.g. annihilation of mobile dislocations, and evolution of microstructure, e.g. the grain coarsening. Particularly, the constitutive laws for dislocation evolution and interaction between dislocations and low angle boundaries are calibrated based on two-dimensional discrete dislocation dynamic (2D DDD) simulations, which are performed at a micro-/meso-scale. The results of the beforementioned EBSD experiments are considered as a direct input, involving e.g. the amount of geometrically necessary dislocations, average misorientations and grain characteristics.
Thermographic nondestructive evaluation (NDE) is based on the interaction of thermal waves with inhomogeneities. These inhomogeneities are related to sample geometry or material composition. Although thermography is suitable for a wide range of inhomogeneities and materials, the fundamental limitation is the diffusive nature of thermal waves and the need to measure their effect radiometrically at the sample surface only. The propagation of the thermal waves from the heat source to the inhomogeneity and to the detection surface results in a degradation in the spatial resolution of the technique. A new concerted ansatz based on a spatially structured heating and a joint sparsity of the signal ensemble allows an improved reconstruction of inhomogeneities. As a first step to establish an improved thermographic NDE method, an experimental setup was built based on structured 1D illumination using a flash lamp behind a mechanical aperture. As a follow-up to this approach, we now use direct structured illumination using a 1D laser array. The individual emitter cells are driven by a pseudo-random binary pattern and are additionally shifted by fractions of the cell period. The repeated measurement of these different configurations enables to illuminate each spot of the sample surface in lateral direction. This allows for a reconstruction that makes use of joint sparsity.
The measured data set is processed using super resolution image reconstruction algorithms such as the iterative joint sparsity (IJOSP) algorithm. Using this reconstruction technique and 150 different illumination patterns results in a spatial resolution enhancement of approximately a factor of four compared to the resolution of 5.9 mm for homogenously illuminated thermographic reconstruction.
Further, new data processing techniques have been studied before applying the IJOSP algorithm that are more performant or less prone to errors regarding image reconstruction. The choice of regularization parameters in data processing as well as experimental parameters such as the illumination pattern as a variable heat flux density (i.e., the Neumann boundary condition for convolution with the constant Green's function) have a big influence on the reconstruction goodness. With analytical-numerical modelling and numerical FEM simulations, we studied the influence of the experimental parameters on the result of the non-linear IJOSP reconstruction. This has also been investigated experimentally e.g. using different laser line widths or more measurements per position. These studies are used to derive optimal conditions for a certain measurement image reconstruction technique.
The separation of two closely spaced defects in fields of Thermographic NDE is very challenging. The diffusive nature of thermal waves leads to a fundamental limitation in spatial resolution. Therefore, super resolution image reconstruction can be used. A new concerted ansatz based on spatially structured heating and joint sparsity of the signal ensemble allows for an improved reconstruction of closely spaced defects. This new technique has been studied using a 1D laser array with randomly chosen illumination pattern.
This paper presents the results after applying super resolution algorithms, such as the iterative joint sparsity (IJOSP) algorithm, to our processed measurement data. Different data processing techniques before applying the IJOSP algorithm as well as the influence of regularization parameters in the data processing techniques are discussed. Moreover, the degradation of super resolution reconstruction goodness by the choice of experimental parameters such as laser line width or number of measurements is shown.
The application of the super resolution results in a spatial resolution enhancement of approximately a factor of four which leads to a better separation of two closely spaced defects.
Resource efficiency is a much discussed topic in terms of improving
the sustainability of energy related and energy non-related
products. Resource efficiency aspects such as the availability
of spare parts, the ability to dismantle, etc. have been included
in draft working documents in the revision of several already
existing Ecodesign regulations as a first step. However, often
these aspects are not consistent with the current technology and
design of these products. A possible reason could be a lack of
sufficient consultation or of a methodology which is sufficiently
tailored for this topic. The established strategies and tools, used
by policymakers, such as the Methodology for the Ecodesign
of Energy-related Products (MEErP), do not seem to deal with
these aspects appropriately. Draft requirements need to be very
well developed before being discussed with member states and
other related stakeholders, because including resource efficiency
parameters could lead to additional, very wide-ranging effects
on society. This topic cannot be covered well with legislative
tools developed primarily for energy aspects. In this paper, a
method is presented which can be used to combine products’
properties with crucial resource efficiency indicators. The method
can be used to develop a set of draft legislative requirements
and to pre-evaluate these requirements by target groups which
would be affected by additional legal requirements. These include:
market surveillance authorities, standardization organizations,
manufacturers and their associations, environmental
organizations and research facilities. The method incorporates
stakeholders’ feedback to identify potential resource efficiency
measures for materials and/or products, their impact on the
European ecology, economy and society. Based on this it would
help to develop legislative requirements which are feasible and
desirable. The results can then be fed into the formal legislative
process, probably speeding it up.
For metal-based additive manufacturing, sensors and measuring systems for monitoring of the energy source, the build volume, the melt pool and the component geometry are already commercially available. Further methods of optics, spectroscopy and non-destructive testing are described in the literature as suitable for in-situ application, but there are only a few reports on practical implementations.
Therefore, a new BAM project aims to develop process monitoring methods for the in-situ evaluation of the quality of additively manufactured metal components. In addition to passive and active thermography, this includes optical tomography, optical emission and absorption spectroscopy, eddy current testing, laminography, X-ray backscattering and photoacoustic methods. These methods are used in additive manufacturing systems for selective laser melting, laser metal deposition and wire arc additive manufacturing. To handle the sometimes huge amounts of data, algorithms for efficient preprocessing are developed and characteristics of the in-situ data are extracted and correlated to defects and inhomogeneities, which are determined using reference methods such as computer tomography and metallography. This process monitoring and fusion of data of different measurement techniques should result in a significant reduction of costly and time-consuming, destructive or non-destructive tests after the production of the component and at the same time reduce the production of scrap.
Here, first results of simultaneous measurements of optical emission spectroscopy and thermography during the laser metal deposition process using 316L as building material are presented. Temperature values are extracted from spectroscopic data by fitting of blackbody emission spectra to the experimental data and compared with results from a thermographic camera. Measurements with and without powder flow reveal significant differences between welding at a pristine metal surface and previously melted positions on the build plate, illustrating the significant influence of the partial oxidation of the surface during the first welding process on subsequent welding. The measurement equipment can either be mounted stationary or following the laser path. While first results were obtained in the stationary mode, future applications for online monitoring of the build of whole parts in the mobile mode are planned.
This research was funded by BAM within the focus area Material.
The project ProMoAM is presented. The goal of the project is to evaluate which NDT techniques or combination of techniques is suited for in-situ quality assurance in additive manufacturing of metals. To this end, also 3d-data fusion and visualization techniques are applied. Additional ex-situ NDT-techniques are used as references for defect detection and quantification. Feasability studies for NDT-techniques that are presently not applicable for in-situ use are performed as well.
The presentation gives a brief overview of the whole project and the different involved NDT-techniques.
The number of publications reporting the amount of microplastic (MP) all over the world increased rapidly. Methods used so far are very time consuming and not able to provide information on total contents. As harmonised sampling, sample preparation and analysis strategies are missing different studies can hardly be compared and quantitative data, including identification and mass contents of the polymers found, are missing. This leads to a lack of comprehensive understanding of MP occurrence, source and entry pathways into the environment.
We developed a method, Thermal Extraction/Desorption-Gaschromatography-Massspectrometry, as a fast screening method for MP analysis. Solid residues of water samples are heated up to 600 C under a N2 atmosphere without any sample preparation. The collected decomposition gases are separated in a gas chromatography system and detected in a mass spectrometer. Mass contents of the identified polymers can be calculated.
In this presentation we will show first results from the influent of the wastewater treatment plant Kaiserslautern (Germany) and its combined sewage system as possibly entry pathway. In order to determine the relevance of wastewater split streams analysis of grey water will be conducted. Samples are fractionally filtered by a sieve cascade with mesh sizes of 500, 100, 50 µm.
Biocide mitigation strategies of microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) in the oil and gas industry have been primarily used to eliminate the growths of sulfate-reducing microorganisms (SRM). However, methanogenic Archaea (MA) can also be highly corrosive by using iron as an electron source for methanogenesis. Because of the fundamental physiological differences between archaea and bacteria, responses of MA towards SRM-specific biocides cannot be deduced using SRM. Due to the lack of information available on the effect of biocides on corrosive MA, we selected THPS, glutaraldehyde, nitrate and perchlorate to compare against corrosive SRM.
Preliminary results showed that at low concentrations of THPS (0-10 ppm), growth of MA was not affected, methane production and corrosion rates (0.1 mm/yr) were comparable between the different THPS concentrations. On the contrary, the SRM strain showed decreased corrosion rates (0.18 mm/yr to 0.03 mm/yr) with increasing THPS concentrations. Further corrosion tests including electrochemical measurements of different biocides on the growth of MA and SRM will be conducted. Such knowledge not only provide important insights on the physiological response of MA to biocides but also contribute to more effective mitigation strategies that can be both economic and environmentally beneficial.

According to the results of the experiments carried out, the following points can be concluded:
1. Exposure tests showed that specimens with the addition of SiO2 particles and polyaniline particles exhibit better corrosion resistance than specimens with the addition of only polyaniline particles or binder only.
2. Open circuit potential measurements showed that in the beginning of the experiments, both coatings had an open circuit potential 100 mV higher than carbon steel. Within one day of immersion, the potential of carbon steel increased significantly, indicating the formation of oxide layer. After extended exposure the carbon steel potential sat between PS1 (which had higher potential) and PS2 (which had a lower potential) and all three were in the range –600 mV to –500 mV vs Ag/AgCl.
3. Both coatings PS-1 and PS-2 were degraded with increasing exposure time, shown by the decrease of absolute impedance value at low frequency range after 2, 4, and 6 days exposure.
4. Potentiodynamic test was performed after 3 hours and 6 days exposure, and it was shown that the coating in the initial stage exhibited more passive behavior than the specimens exposed for 6 days.
The weld pool dynamics and shape play a fundamental role in keyhole mode welding. The presented work aims the experimental and numerical investigation of the influence of the weld pool characteristics on the formation of hot cracking. The experimental procedure allows recording the molten pool in the longitudinal section of a butt joint configuration of 15 mm thick structural steel and transparent quartz glass by using a high-speed video camera and two thermal imaging cameras. The observations show that the dimensions of the weld pool vary depending on the depth. The regions close to the surface form a teardrop-shaped weld pool. A bulge-region and its temporal evolution are observed approximately in the middle of the depth of the weld pool, where hot cracking appears. A numerical framework including models for the weld pool dynamics, global temperature field, transient stress state, crystal growth, diffusion and macro-segregation and subroutines for their one-way couplings is developed. The numerically obtained and experimentally observed results are in a good agreement. It is shown that the bulge-region leads to a delay in the solidification behavior, increased temporal tensile stresses and accumulation of impurities in the defect region and hence enhance the probability of hot cracking formation.

The geometrical characteristics of the weld end crater are commonly used for the validation of numerical results in welding simulation. A semi-analytical model calculating the cooling stage of the welding process after the moving energy source is turned off has been developed. A solution for various combinations of heat sources and workpieces has been found. The theoretical limits for the heat transfer of the absorbed energy during cooling in a thin plate and a semi-infinite body were studied. It is shown that after turning off the energy source, an additional melting of the base material in longitudinal direction may occur. The developed technique is applied to complete-penetration keyhole laser beam welding of a 2 mm thick austenitic chromium-nickel 316L steel plate at a welding speed of 20 mm/s and a laser power of 2.3 kW. The results show a theoretical increase of the weld end crater length in comparison to the length of the steady-state weld pool of up to 19 %. A shift of the centre of the end crater, in which the solidification of the liquid metal ends, towards the tail of the end crater relative to the axis of the heat source at the time of its termination, was computed. The speed and the direction of crystallization of the molten material in the weld pool and the end crater were found to be different. A good agreement between the computational results and the welding experiments was achieved.
A numerical framework simulation of the steady-state thermal behaviour in keyhole mode welding has been developed. It is based on the equivalent heat source concept and consists of two parts: computational thermo-fluid dynamics and heat conduction. The solution of the thermo-fluid dynamics problem by the finite element method for a bounded domain results in a weld pool interface geometry being the input data for a subsequent heat conduction problem solved for a workpiece by proposed boundary element method. The main physical phenomena, such as keyhole shape, thermo-capillary and natural convection and temperaturedependent material properties are taken into consideration. The developed technique is applied to complete-penetration keyhole laser beam welding of a 15 mm thick low-alloyed steel plate at a welding speed of 33 mm/s and a laser power of 18 kW. The fluid flow of the molten metal has a strong influence on the weld pool geometry. The thermo-capillary convection is responsible for an increase of the weld pool size near the plate surfaces and a bulge formation near the plate middle plane. The numerical and experimental molten pools, cross-sectional weld dimensions and thermal cycles of the heat affected zone are in close agreement.
Explosion and decomposition limits of flammable and chemically unstable gases were determined experimentally in a dosed autoclave with varying ignition energy up to 1000 J. The ignition source was a lightning arc caused by an exploding wire igniter as described in EN 1839 B .. In case of methane only the upper explosion limit was influenced significantly by the ignition energy, whereas the lower explosion limit was constant. In case of R32 however. it was the lower explosion limit that was influenced significantly by the ignition energy and not the upper explosion limit. A particularly strong dependency from the ignition energy was found for the decomposition limits of the chemically unstable gases in nitrogen.
Most fluorinated hydrocarbons that shall replace refrigerants with high GWP. like R134a. are flammable. For evaluating inertization measures for explosion protection. flammability of low-GWP refrigerants R1234yf, R32 and R1132a blended with carbon dioxide.
Nitrogen and argon were studied experimentally in a closed autoclave
at atmospheric conditions. Furthermore, a calculation method was
adapted to reduce the experimental costs for flammability studies on
these gas mixtures. For igniting R1234yf in the closed autoclave a
newly developed ignition system was used that allows generating
electric arcs with high ignition energy. Gas mixtures containing the
mildly flammable R1234yf and R32 could be inerted by adding much
less inert gas than mixtures containing R1132a, which is more similar
to unfluorinated hydrocarbons regarding the explosion regions. By
using the adapted model of constant adiabatic flame temperature
profiles estimating the explosion limits of fluorinated hydrocarbons
was possible with similar accuracy as for unf luorinated hydrocarbons.
The present contribution evaluates four measuring series made by the Federal Institute of Material Research and Testing for the relations between train speed and ground vibration amplitudes. This experimental evaluation is supported by the simulation of the train passages at the different sites by using appropriate excitation mechanisms and forces as well as layered soil models which have been derived from impact measurements at each site.
Mitigation measures of railway induced vibration have been demonstrated at the emission, transmission and immission part. It must be carefully observed that the correct masses and stiffnesses are used.
Typical mistakes have been shown,
- 1D models for vehicle-track interaction,
- impedance instead of stiffness for the infill material of a trench,
- rigid buildings or neglecting the soil-building interaction.
The dominant mid-frequency part of the ground vibration is due to the irregular soil.
Three measurement campaigns of train-induced ground vibrations are evaluated for the vehicle-track-soil interaction. Ground vibrations, track vibrations and vehicle vibrations have been measured for train passages and impulse excitation and compared with theoretical results. The soil and the track-soil system are calculated by wavenumber integrals. The influence of the vehicle is introduced by a substructure method. By comparing theory and measurement the different components of excitation force and ground vibration can be analysed, the quasi-static excitation, track-alignment errors, the out-of-roundness of wheels, the wheel and rail roughness, and moreover, scattered axle impulses and ineffective high-frequency parts of the wheelset accelerations and Forces.

Despite of the significant advances in AM process optimization there is still a lack of experimental results and understanding regarding the mechanical behavior and microstructural evolution of AMparts, especially in loading conditions typical for safety-relevant applications e.g. in the aerospace or power engineering. Within the scope of the presented investigations, a characterization of the fatigue behavior of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V in the low cycle fatigue regime was carried out in the range of 0.3 to 1.0 % strain amplitude at room temperature, 250°C and 400°C. The Ti-6Al-4V specimens are machined out of lean cylindrical rods, which were fabricated using powder laser metal deposition (LMD) with an improved build-up strategy. The improved strategy incorporates variable track overlap ratios to achieve a constant growth in the shell and core area. The low-cycle-fatigue behavior is described based on cyclic deformation curves and strain-based fatigue life curves. The lifetimes are fitted based on the Manson-Coffin-Basquin relationship. A characterization of the microstructure and the Lack-of-Fusion (LoF)-defect-structure in the as-built state is performed using optical light microscopy and high-resolution computed tomography (CT) respectively. The failure mechanism under loading is described in terms of LoF-defects-evolution and crack growth mechanism based on an interrupted LCF test with selected test parameters. After failure, scanning electron microscopy, digital and optical light microscopy and CT are used to describe the failure mechanisms both in the longitudinal direction and in the cross section of the specimens. The fatigue lives obtained are comparable with results from previous related studies and are shorter than those of traditionally manufactured (wrought) Ti-6Al-4V. In this study new experimental data and understanding of the mechanical behavior under application-relevant loading conditions (high temperature, cyclic plasticity) is gained. Furthermore, a better understanding of the role of LoFdefects and AM-typical microstructural features on the failure mechanism of LMD Ti-6Al-4V is achieved.

Investigation of the salinization in marine and offshore environment - test methods and challenges
(2019)
Salinization and contamination of metal surfaces by chloride-containing aerosols is of great importance with regard to corrosion phenomena in the maritime sector and in offshore applications. Especially Offshore Wind Turbines are exposed to extreme corrosive conditions due to high chloride concentrations in the atmosphere and the resulting high chloride deposition rates. It is of great importance to evaluate to what extent salinization of the surface influences the corrosion protection of coatings and pitting occurrence on stainless steels under atmospheric conditions to evaluate the durability of metallic building structures in offshore and marine environments. The evaluation of the scientific literature and regulatory guidelines has shown that there are still many open questions regarding the contamination of metal surfaces by chlorides. This contribution will discuss how salinization of metal surfaces is evaluated and monitored according to current standards and guidelines. Future challenges concerning test methods and the application of evaluated salinization values and deposition rates will be discussed.

A novel approach for the reconstruction of an equivalent volumetric heat source from a known weld pool shape is proposed. It is based on previously obtained weld pool geometries from a steady-state thermo-fluid dynamics simulation. Hereby the weld pool dimensions are obtained under consideration of the most crucial physical phenomena, such as phase transformations, thermo-capillary convection, natural convection and temperature-dependent material properties. The algorithm provides a time and calibration efficient way for the reproduction of the weld pool shape by local Lamé curves. By adjusting their parameters, the identification of the finite elements located within the weld pool is enabled. The heat input due to the equivalent heat source is assured by replacing the detected nodes’ temperature by the melting temperature.
The model offers variable parameters making it flexible and adaptable for a wide range of workpiece thicknesses and materials and allows for the investigation of transient thermal effects, e.g. the cooling stage of the workpiece. The calculation times remain acceptably short especially when compared to a fully coupled process simulation. The computational results are in good agreement with performed complete-penetration laser beam welding experiments.
At the Stakeholder meeting of the EMPIR project “Multifunctional ultrafast microprobes for on-the-machine measurements”, details about two measurement modes were presented. Force distance curves and contact resonance measurements are compared. The basic principles are explained and exemplary measurements concerning mechanical properties of polymers are shown.
Against the background of sustainable resource management and efficiency, wood-based materials are currently experiencing a revival and, among others, plywood, Laminated Veneer Lumber and glued laminated timber are becoming increasingly more important in the building sector. Even though these materials are so-called engineered products, the element wood is naturally grown with intrinsic variability in mechanical properties and requires professional handling on-site. Otherwise, load-bearing structures made of wood materials may entail certain risks. Critical situations can, in principle, be avoided by implementing a structural health monitoring system into components or structures made from wood material. The aim is to indicate accumulation of mechanical damage and to eliminate or at least significantly reduce the risk of unexpected failure. Toward this purpose, the failure behavior of several layered wood materials under quasi-static tension was investigated in laboratory-scale experiments by means of acoustic emission (AE) measurement. Based on spectral analysis and pattern recognition, two classes of AE signals are identified for each investigated lay-up that are characterized by either low or high frequency contents in the respective power spectra. AE activity and intensity of both signal classes are analyzed, striving for predictors appropriate for AE monitoring concepts.
In this study, the influence of the welding speed and the arc power on the solidification crack formation for partial penetration laser hybrid welded Thick-Walled plates were investigated. Experimentally, a linear correlation between the welding velocity and the crack number was observed. That is by reducing the welding velocity the crack number was reduced.
The reduced welding velocity showed a strong impact on stress, as the model demonstrated a very lower stress amount in comparison to the reference case. The reduction of the welding speed could be a helpful technique to reduce the hot cracking. The wire feed speed showed a very slight influence on the crack formation. That can be returned to the large distance between the critical region for cracking and the arc region.
In this study, the influence of the welding speed, the arc power and the laser focal position on the solidification crack formation for partial penetration laser hybrid welded thick-walled plates were investigated. Experimentally, a direct correlation between the welding speed and the crack number was observed. That is by reducing the welding velocity the crack number was decreased. The focal position shows also a significant influence on the crack number. Since by focusing the laser on the specimen surface, the crack number has been significantly diminished.
The wire feed speed showed a very slight influence on the crack formation. That is due to the large distance between the critical region for cracking and the arc region.
The numerical model shows a high-stress concentration in the weld root for both components (vertical and transversal).
Numerically, the reduced welding speed showed a strong impact on stress, as the model demonstrated a lower stress amount by decreasing the welding speed. The solidification cracking in the weld root is a result of interaction between metallurgical and geometrical and thermomechanical factors.
Most synthetic polymers have a high fire load, and as a result, they require flame retardants (FRs) to ensure their safe use. Phosphorus plays an important role in flame retardancy and has the potential to replace halogenated variants, which are assumed to be harmful to the environment and health. Among phosphorus-based FRs, there exists a trend towards polymeric, high molar mass molecules with complex molecular architectures. In this project, we synthesized a novel series of so-called phosphorus-based hyperbranched polymeric FRs and investigated their use as multifunctional additives to high-performance polymers, i.e. epoxy resins. By cleverly designing the chemical structure to contain varying amounts of P-O and P-N bonds, new insight into the chemical mechanism of flame retardancy was gained, and by comparing the hyperbranched polymers to their monomeric counterparts, a greater understanding of the role of complex architecture was won. This talk aims at presenting some of these results and proposes chemical mechanisms that illustrate what role these novel hyperbranched flame retardants play in molecular firefighting.

Up until several years ago, tensile and compressive tests have been exclusively carried out as single-sample tests within a tensile, hardness or universal testing machine. The availability of centrifuge technology changed this situation in 2013 in several ways because centrifugal force is used as testing force within a rotational reference frame.
Firstly, multiple-sample strength testing became feasible for both tensile load condi-tions, e.g. determination of composite, bonding or adhesive strength, and compressive load conditions, e.g. hardness, compressibility and compactibility. Secondly, there is no need for a two-sided sample clamping and double-cardanic suspensions as samples are simply inserted using a one-sided sample support. Thirdly, shear forces can be avoided by means of guiding sleeves which steer test stamps acting as mass bodies for either tensile or compressive testing. Fourthly, up to eight samples can be tested under identical conditions within a very short period of time, typically within 15 minutes including sample loading and unloading. Hence, either a reliable statistics (of identical samples) or a ranking (of different samples) can be derived from one test run.
The bench-top test system is described in detail and demonstrated that centrifugal force acts as testing force in an appropriate way because Euler and Coriolis force do not affect the testing results. Examples for both tensile strength testing, i.e. bonding strength of adhesives-bonded joints and adhesive strength of coatings, and compres-sive strength testing, i.e. Vickers-, Brinell- and ball indentation hardness and deter-mination of spring constants, are presented, discussed and compared with conven-tional tests within tensile, hardness or universal testing machines.
At present, a maximum testing force of 6.5 kN can be realized which results at test stamp diameters of 5 mm, 7 mm, and 10 mm in tensile or compressive stress values of 80 MPa, 160 MPa, and 320 MPa. For tensile strength, this is already beyond bonding strength of cold- and warm-curing adhesives. Moreover, centrifuge technology is compliant to standards such as EN 15870, EN ISO 4624, EN ISO 6506/6507 and VDI/VDE 2616. Programmable test cycles allow both short-term stress and log-term fatigue tests. Based on a variety of examples of surface and bonding technology, applications in both fields R&D and QC are presented. Meanwhile, centrifuge technology is also accredited according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025.

Chlorination of pool water and wastewater, in food and pharmaceutical production, as well as in pesticide and paper manufacturing is a routinely used technique. However, the amount of chlorine in water must be strictly adjusted, to ensure enough concentration to kill pathogenic bacteria and viruses, while preventing too high concentrations inducing negative effects on human health. As an indicator, a molecular fluorescent probe based on a BODIPY structure was designed. This indicator exhibits a sensitive and selective fluorescence response upon increasing concentrations of hypochlorite in aqueous solvent mixtures. Real-time analyses became possible after the integration of this fluorescent indicator into newly designed 2D & 3D microfluidic chips incorporating a passive sinusoidal mixer and a micro-hydrocyclone, respectively. A comparison of the two microfluidic systems, including their ability to prevent accumulation or circulation of microbubbles, has shown excellent fluidic behaviour for the micro-hydrocyclone device. This system was distinctly more robust against gas bubbles, showed a higher signal gain and allowed to halve the limit of detection to 0.02 mg L–1. The use of the 3D system to quantify the chlorine content of pool water samples for sensitive and quantitative chlorine monitoring has been demonstrated.
The simulator aRTist combines analytical and Monte Carlo methods to efficiently model the radiographic process of industrial radiology. In this contribution we focus on virtual computer tomography, the simulation of tomographic scans. The possibilities to simulate complex scanning trajectories are shown in combination with the tomographic reconstruction using individual projection matrices.
Virtual CT acquisition and reconstruction of complex and noisy scanning trajectories in aRTist
(2019)
In modern CT imaging, simulation has become an important tool to minimize cost- and time-intensive measurements. It is increasingly used to optimize techniques for complex applications, to support the preparation of written procedures, and for educational purposes. We extended the CT simulation software ‘aRTist’ with a module to set-up arbitrary trajectories including disturbing influences during the scan. Moreover, such geometric deviations can be compensated by the internal reconstruction tool.

3D images such as those produces by X-ray tomography can provide a wealth of information on the internal structure of materials, but quantification of specific geometrical or topological characteristics linked to some bulk physical property is far from being straightforward. This study focuses on methods to quantify the differences in physical properties as a function of direction, i.e. their anisotropy, and how it can be linked to measures of anisotropy of the internal structure of the material. The auto-correlation function gives a similarity measure in the volume as a function of distance and direction. This is a cross-correlation of the image with itself fast to compute and relatively insensitive to noise. It is why we focus on this method to compare with the physical property of our DPF material. Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) materials are porous ceramics that; a) can be used at very high temperatures; b) have very good thermal shock resistance; c) are inert; d) can be manufactured with tailored porosity. Their usual way of production consists of the extrusion of a slurry into the desired filter shape, with successive ceramming at high temperature. This process causes anisotropy at both microscopic and macroscopic levels.
Pulsed thermography is a well-known non-destructive testing technique and has proven to be a valuable tool for examination of material defects, to determine thermal material parameters, and the thickness of test specimens through calibration or mathematical models. However, the application to semitransparent materials is quite new and demanding, especially for semitransparent materials like epoxy, polyamide 12, or glass fiber reinforced polymers with epoxy or polyamide matrix.
In order to describe the temporal temperature evolution in such materials, which are recorded with an infrared camera during pulse thermography experiments, much more influences have to be considered, compared to opaque materials:
- The wavelength of the excitation source and the spectral range of the infrared camera
- The angles between the specimen, the excitation source and the infrared camera
- The area behind the specimen
- The roughness of the material surface
- The scattering mechanism within the material
Here, we will consider all these influences and describe how they can be treated mathematically in analytical or numerical models (using COMSOL Multiphysics software). These models describe the temperature development during the pulse thermography experiment in reflection and transmission configuration. By fitting the results of the mathematical models to experimental data it is possible to determine the thickness or the optical and thermal properties of the specimen.
This presentation discusses industry 4.0 from the perspective of human machine interaction (HMI). Based on available literature the changes, new demands and possible problems related to people’s jobs as a result of increased digitisation and use of artificial intelligence are addressed. Combining literature with own experience in non-destructive testing (NDT), the author addresses the possible challenges and chances for the NDT personnel in the era of NDT 4.0.
Usability of the written procedures: an eye tracking study Non-destructive evaluation (NDE) is regarded as one of the key elements in ensuring quality of engineering systems and their safe use. A failure of NDE to detect critical defects in safety-relevant components, such as those in the nuclear industry, may lead to catastrophic consequences for the environment and the people. NDE inspection procedure is one of the most important tools in the everyday life of an NDE inspector. Experience and research studies have shown that NDE procedures are not always used as foreseen and may need to be optimized. Both the content and format play an important role in producing reliable procedures. Whereas the content aids in the understanding of the task and in its subsequent correct execution, the format determines the efficiency and frequency of the procedure’s use.
For the purposes of this study, an inspection procedure - designed to be used in the inspection of components used in the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel - was further developed by adopting a user-centered design. This was achieved by following the eye movements during a data evaluation task whilst using the procedure, by interviews and group discussions, accompanied by a review from a human factors’ perspective, the suggestions from relevant literature and by reiterating the entire process once again. This process resulted in identifying shortcomings and in suggesting alterations to the existing procedure. The newly created procedure was empirically tested for its usability using eye tracking. By comparing the old instruction format to the newly developed one, the results showed that appropriately highlighting warnings, exceptions, or reminders, and placing them at a logical position assures that they will be read and identified with ease rather than overlooked. The presentation of the information in a stepwise manner, with one action per step, allows the user to follow more easily the steps that must be carried out to save time and effort.
This study - the first of its kind in the field of non-destructive evaluation - showed that the procedure can be improved by applying human factors principles to the design and by involving the users into the process of procedure development and quality assurance.
Introduction of the speaker – Marija Bertovic
Marija Bertovic has a degree in psychology and a PhD in human factors. Since 2006 she has been working on topics related to human factors in non-destructive testing at the BAM Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, German Society for Non-Destructive Testing and as an independent consultant. The focus of her research has been on identifying and studying human factors’ related risks during NDT inspections and suggesting ways of optimizing the inspections and inspection procedures. She is currently a research staff member at BAM responsible for probabilistic safety and reliability analyses AND human factors analyses. She is the chairwoman of the German Society for Non-Destructive Testing’s (DGZfP) subcommittee on human machine interaction and the winner of the DGZfP Science Award in 2018.
It is known that human factors (HF) affect the reliability of non-destructive testing (NDT). However, reliability is often expressed in probability of detection (POD) curves, obtained in practical trials, where human and organisational factors are considered only indirectly, through the few people taking part in the trials. Recently, we have observed an increase in the use of numerical modelling to obtain POD curves outside of practical trials. The so-called model-assisted POD(MAPOD) approaches have so far only very rarely included some kind of variation to account for HF. This talk presents different possibilities to include HF in MAPOD and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each approach.
In traditional NDT, human is seen as the main source of error. The advances in NDT 4.0 lead to believe that by increased automation, people, and therefore human error, can be diminished. The research on human-automation interaction shows that increased automation does not necessarily lead to a decrease of human error, a phenomenon dubbed as “automation ironies”, introduced by Bainbridge in 1987. The research shows that whereas with automation the known human error can be prevented, there is still room for new risks and error sources, which are unknown. As we advance from automation to industry 4.0 concepts, the possibility for human error shifts slightly to the developers of systems but remains in the interaction with systems as well, as the tasks and task demands change and give rise for possible failure at different stages of the NDT process, as once known.
Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a major contributor to the safe railway operation. Even though NDT reliability in railway maintenance is affected by human factors, there are only just a few studies published in this field so far. Education and training of the NDT personnel are some of the most important drivers of safe and reliable NDT. Continuously improving current practices and tools used for educational purposes can be achieved not only through technical content, but also through the attention to human factors. The aim of this study was to deepen the understanding of possible human-related risks in the manual ultrasonic inspection of the hollow railway axles and to suggest measures to improve the education and training of the NDT personnel. This was achieved by means of Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) carried out with eight NDT experts and by a survey of 27 experienced inspectors. The results show that failures can happen throughout the entire NDT process. Prevention of those failures could be improved through the optimization of the organization, technology, documentation and regulations, working conditions and the general process, and through the optimization of the formal education and training. Specialized training of the executives, extended training of the supervisors and the inspectors and improvement of the inspection documentation have been suggested. The study also showed potential for the improvements of the inspection in the field.
Crystalline molecular materials with mechanical flexibility are promising for technological development. This is particularly true for the development of advanced materials with optoelectronic and biomedical applications. While a growing number of mechanically flexible crystalline molecular materials are being reported,1 they remain scarce. At present, most discoveries are serendipitous, as limited design strategies are currently known. Amongst these strategies Desiraju et. al. suggested that elastic materials must contain herringbone structures.2 For plastic crystals, the so-called ‘shape-synthon’ strategy has been developed, in which weak non-covalent interactions are introduced into structures to facilitate mobility of molecules.3 This includes formation of slip planes. Generally, these models have performed very well at predicting and rationalizing the mechanical properties of new materials. Recently, however, a family of one-dimensional covalent networks (coordination polymers; CPs) has been described, which show mechanical elasticity. With drastically different structural chemistry, these systems do not seem to adhere to the currently established rules. Herein, we present the first such system: a plastically bendable crystal of a 1D CP, [Zn(-Cl)2(3,5-Cl2Py)2]n (where 3,5-Cl2Py = 3,5-dichloro pyridine). This CP crystallizes in a tetragonal, and can therefore be bent over two major faces to acute angles without fracturing. We conducted bending and indentation experiments to quantify the mechanical properties of the CP crystal. This was complimented by Vibrational (Raman and Terahertz) spectroscopy and theoretical calculations for deeper understanding of molecular level structural deformation.
Hundreds of papyrus rolls, carbonized during the 79CE eruption of Mount Vesuvius, were discovered in 1754 at Herculaneum. Sophisticated mechanical methods for unrolling the best-preserved scrolls have been applied, with varying success. However, such processes have been abandoned, to prevent risk from irremediable damage or loss and to preserve the integrity of the extremely fragile rolls. Following the development of X-ray based non-invasive techniques, attempts to virtually unroll the scrolls were made. The most common ink in Antiquity was carbon-based, and the main element of carbonized papyrus is carbon, making these investigations difficult. However, some attempts with synchrotron X-ray phase-contrast tomography (XPCT) were successful. Recently, the identification of antique inks containing metals raised hope that if some of the inks contain metal the rolls can be virtually unrolled using conventional CT- technique. We are presenting here the first results of a preliminary analysis, which aimed at identifying scrolls whose ink contains metals.
Z02 is one of the three technically supporting projects at the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC). In collaboration with the other two service projects, Z01 and Z03, it aims at bridging the gap between humanities and natural sciences and technology. To that purpose, we set up a laboratory with a range of high-end instruments, most of them mobile, allowing thorough non-destructive analysis of manuscripts. In addition to working on constantly improving the laboratory and the methods of analysis, a substantial part of our activities is dedicated to service, by supporting different research projects conducted at the centre. In this talk, we will present our equipment and the possibilities offered by the different techniques available regarding the different kinds of missions: typology and classification of inks, provenance studies, recovery of faded inscriptions and palimpsests, reconstruction of the history of manuscripts, authentication and dating. We will give a brief overview of our past and ongoing activities in the frame of the second phase of the CSMC. Finally, a selection of three projects will be presented in greater detail to highlight the possibilities of our laboratory and the diversity of missions which can be carried out.
