IRWG strategy update
(2023)
The reference method for obtaining absolute isotope ratios still is the isotope mixture approach. Due the huge efforts required the full isotope mixture approach is applied only by a few institutes worldwide. To enable an IRWG key comparison with a sufficiently large number of participants a proposal for absolute cu isotope ratios is presented where participants will be provided with the enriched isotopes, the isotope mixtures and the samples. In parallel a pilot study will be organized where alternative approaches for obtaining absolute Cu isotope ratios can be applied.
This presentation provides a short introduction to the Commission on Isotopic Abundances and Atomic Weights (CIAAW). It describes the role of the Commission and provides an insight into its work and the corresponding principal tasks. Finally, it provides the reader with the latest achievements and with the most recent publications.
Building envelopes & natural rock surfaces represent the frontier between solid material surfaces, biosphere and the atmospheric environment – and are subject to permanent change in structure and chemistry. These surfaces are a natural habitat of subaerial rock biofilms (SAB) that are an important stage of primary succession. As their metabolic processes have a great impact on the composition of the near-surface layers of the earth biofilms on natural and manmade hard substrates are a research focus of geomicrobiology. In technical systems immobilized algae biofilms are already used successfully for wastewater cleaning. Algae can eliminate bacteria from the water and at the same time increase the oxygen concentration and the pH value in the water through photosynthesis, which again allows phosphate elimination to take place. Nitrificants contained in the algae biofilm convert ammonium to nitrite and nitrate.
Mineral claddings for building facades could be engineered to sustain either natural or previously established carefully selected algae-dominated biofilms and this way help to clean the air.
For a targeted engineering of the mineral substrates and the biofilms attached to them basic knowledge is however missing. By systematic research in an interdisciplinary team of microbiologists and building material scientists the following questions shall be clarified
• How can a curated biofilm be stabilized on the surface and designed to be durable without compromising the substrate
• What exactly do the biofilms need in terms of moisture in their respective growth stages? Or how long water must be available in what form and quantity to enable growth.
• What is the influence of the substrate on the availability and quality of the (rain) water (water quality, leaching of substances (alkalis) from the building materials, leaching of aerosol components, surface tension, suction tension, thickness of the water molecule layers adsorbed in the pore spaces....)
There are several research groups working on bioreceptive building materials which emphasizes the general interest in the topic. The idea of speeding-up the process by the targeted establishment of biofilms on building façade panels is a unique approach that has so far only been researched at BAM. Architects are very interested in biofilm facades as a new co-designing method of humans and nature reflecting the changing awareness for the loss of biodiversity in cities. If the biofilms need irrigation the evaporative cooling would reduce the urban heat island effect.
Grain boundary (GB) chemical and structural variations can significantly influence materials performance. The former is generally ascribed to the structural gradient between the grain and GB. While GB segregation may be accompanied by chemical and structural variations, clear insights about the GB’s thermodynamic phase behaviour upon coupling between its chemistry and structure is lacking. Using the CALPHAD integrated density-based phase field model, we study the co-evolution of GB’s structure and segregation in Fe-Mn alloys. We found that the GB segregation transition is amplified if its structure can respond to chemical variation. Additionally, the coupling between GB structural and segregation evolution was found to enable co-existence of the spinodally formed low- and high-Mn phases within the GB. In the light of atomistic simulations, we expand on investigating the correlation between the parameters that characterise the GB density map with GB properties.
Additive manufacturing (AM) processes enable the efficient production of advanced constructions. New developments in topology optimization are leading to weight-optimized designs of increasing complexity. Direct energy deposition processes (DED) such as wire and arc-based additive manufacturing are an important method of additive manufacturing. The wire filler metals enable a wide range of materials, while the arc process provides a high deposition rate compared to laser and powder-based processes. Combined with the use of high-strength steels, the thickness of walls or components can be significantly reduced in the context of lightweight construction, which results in significant savings in energy, costs, time and resources. Suitable high-strength steel filler metals are commercially available for DED-arc AM processes. However, guidelines and quantitative knowledge about welding stresses and cold cracking issues during component production and service are lacking. This limits the industrial application considerably. In a joint project of BAM and Chemnitz University of Technology, the main influences and complex interactions of material, production process, design and processing steps on the residual stress level are investigated. The aim is to develop processing recommendations and a cold cracking test for economical processing and stress-related design of high-strength steels with DED-arc. This study focuses on residual stress analysis by neutron diffraction (ND) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) on defined test specimens. The ND analysis were performed at the Paul Scherrer Institute- Villigen, Switzerland (PSI) and the XRD analysis at BAM. The study shows a quantitative and qualitative comparison of the residual stress magnitudes and distribution between the component bulk (ND) and surface (XRD) analyses. The ND analysis reveals that in DED-arc AM walls the residual stresses dominate in the direction of welding and are negligibly small in each case transverse to the direction of welding. The topology of the analyzed residual stresses shows almost identical residual stress maps compared to XRD. In addition, the residual stresses are significantly influenced by the solid phase transformation of the material due to low cooling times and less post heat treatment cycles of following AM layers in the area of the top layer.

High-strength steels offer great potential in weight-optimised modern steel structures. Additive manufacturing processes, such as Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), enable near-net-shape manufacturing of complex structures and more efficient manufacturing, offering significant savings in costs, time, and resources. Suitable filler materials for WAAM are already commercially available. However, the lack of knowledge or technical guidelines regarding welding residual stresses during manufacturing and operation in connection with cold cracking risk limit their industrial application significantly. In a project of BAM and TU Chemnitz, the influences and complex interactions of material, manufacturing process, design and processing steps on residual stress evolution are investigated. By developing process recommendations and a special cold cracking test, economic manufacturing, and stress-appropriate design of high-strength steel WAAM components are main objectives.
The present study focuses on determining the influence of heat control (interpass temperature, heat input, cooling time) and the design aspects of the components on the hardness and residual stresses, which are analysed by X-ray diffraction. Defined reference specimens, i.e., hollow cuboids, are automatically welded with a special WAAM solid wire. The influences of wall length, wall thickness and wall height on the residual stresses are analysed. Geometric properties can be selectively adjusted by wire feed and welding speed but cannot be varied arbitrarily. This was addressed by adapted build-up strategies. The results indicate a significant influence of the heat control and the wall height on the residual stresses. The interpass temperature, wall thickness and wall length are not significant. These analyses allow recommendations for standards and manufacturing guidelines, enabling a safe and economic manufacturing of high-strength steel components.

Beginning in 1976 the former iron ore mine Konrad was geologically investigated concerning its suitability as a location for a German final repository for low and intermediate level waste. After a comprehensive licensing procedure it was approved and is now being prepared and equipped for the planned start of storage in 2027. At the end of the 1980s, the requirements for waste containers for storage in this repository were defined for the first time on the basis of an incident analysis of the on-site handling procedures, beginning with the unloading of the packages after the arrival at the site up to the final positioning in the underground storage galleries. A 5-meter drop onto the rock ground of the mine was identified as the covering case for high mechanical requirements (ABK II container class). In contrast to the 9-meter drop according to the IAEA Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material, the 5-meter drop is performed onto a hard but not essentially unyielding target. The container is typically not protected by an impact limiter. The requirements for a potential test facility are described in the regulations for the Konrad repository. The mechanical strength of the target is defined as a concrete strength equivalent to the identified properties of the rock ground of the mine.
Since 1991 BAM has consistently used precast reinforced concrete slabs as target for drop tests in the framework of licensing procedures as well as in research projects. While the original design fulfilled the requirement for the integrity of the concrete slab in most cases, it failed when drop tests onto an edge of a container were performed. A redesigned concrete slab developed in a research project and suggested as a reference target in 2009 has been successfully used in Konrad licensing procedures since then.
The paper gives a brief overview of the historical development and it describes BAM’s efforts and approaches to continuously guarantee a concrete slab of defined quality and to provide a test setup for valid drop tests from the applicants and the authorities view.
Gypsum (CaSO4∙2H2O), bassanite (CaSO4∙0.5H2O), and anhydrite (CaSO4) are essential evaporite minerals for the evolution of hyper-arid surface environments on Earth and Mars (Voigt et al. 2019; Vaniman et al. 2018). The formation mechanism of especially anhydrite has been a matter of scientific debate for more than a century (van’t Hoff et al. 1903). To date, there exists no model that can reliably predict anhydrite formation at earth’s surface conditions. While thermodynamics favor its formation, it is hardly achieved on laboratory time scales at conditions fitting either the Atacama Desert on Earth, or the surface of Mars (Wehmann et al. 2023). In light of most recent developments (e.g. Stawski et al. 2016), that advocate for a complex, non-classical nucleation mechanism for all calcium sulphates, we present an analysis of natural samples from the Atacama Desert to identify key features that promote the nucleation and growth of anhydrite under planetary surface conditions. Our analyses reveal at least three distinct anhydrite facies, with differing mineralogy and micro- to nano-structures. The facies are (1) aeolian deposits with sub-μm grain sizes, (2) (sub-)surface nodules that formed from aeolian deposits and (3) selenites with secondary anhydrite rims. Possible mechanisms of their formation will be discussed.
In order to protect natural gypsum deposits and to compensate for the decreasing amount of Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) gypsum it is necessary to develop and explore new sources of gypsum. For this purpose, the potentials of different gypsum wastes are investigated in the study “GipsRec 2.0”, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Germany).
On the one hand, the project worked on a new processing technology for gypsum fiberboards (GFB). While the recycling of gypsum plasterboards has already been carried out on an industrial scale for several years, the recycling of gypsum fiberboards (GFB) has proven to be challenging. Gypsum fiberboards from demolition sites and offcuts from GFB production were used for these investigations. The tests were conducted on a technical scale. Furthermore, various synthetic gypsums are being investigated with regard to their suitability for gypsum production. The analyses are carried out on production residues.
In this project, a promising process for gypsum fiberboard recycling could be developed, as well as other waste gypsums are investigated and evaluated with regard to their potential as secondary raw material. In addition, selected process routes are assessed for their environmental impact using a life cycle assessment (LCA) approach.
Several studies have shown that the electron beam (e-beam) can be used to create nanomaterials from microparticles in situ in a TEM. However, attempts to produce gold nanoparticles (NPs) on silicon oxide substrate remained to be accomplished. Here, we show that the production of gold NPs is possible by using the e-beam in a SEM, under a set of parameters. The NPs produced present a size gradient along the radial direction. A parameter study shows that the microparticles may: 1) flicker away without producing NPs, 2) fragment to form NPs and/or 3) react with the silicon oxide substrate, depending on the applied current. A hypothesis regarding the driving physical phenomena that lead the microparticles to fragment into NPs is discussed. Fabrication of gold NPs in the SEM provides a more cost-effective option as compared to the established method in the TEM.

To understand the physical mechanisms leading to the gold NPs, the mechanisms of e-beam induced charging as well as e-beam induced heating of the MPs were discussed. Several hints point to heating as the driving mechanism.
Due to their favorable mechanical and anti-corrosion properties, medium entropy alloys (MEA) are of high academic and industrial interest as novel materials for engineering and catalytic applications. Previous studies on general corrosion behavior indicate high current densities at high anodic potentials for MEAs. Further investigations of the underlying transpassive dissolution and local corrosion behavior remain scarce.
To understand the passivation behavior of MEAs CrCoNi and FeCrNi at high anodic potentials, the mechanisms of transpassive dissolution and the oxygen evolution reaction were investigated in this project. Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) was applied in the interrogative mode for the detection of evolving metal species and oxygen. By means of ICP-MS analysis, dissolved metal species were quantified to provide a fundamental understanding on the transpassive dissolution. As the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) may contribute a large percentile to the observed current at high anodic potentials, SECM measurements were employed to analyze the onset of the OER. Potentiodynamic, potentiostatic and chronoamperometric techniques as well as different electrolytes were used to induce precisely controlled corrosion loads during the SECM experiments and for the ICP-MS analysis. Macroscopic corrosion properties of the alloys, electrical and chemical properties of the passive films were studied by means of potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), respectively.
Finally, the analysis of the corrosion morphology and the potential of the surface before, during and after passivity breakdown was carried out by means of in-situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM). The presentation will summarize our results on the interplay of anodic passivation and oxygen evolution of MEAs in aqueous NaCl electrolytes.
Old materials, new life: Using diffusion-controlled synthesis for discovery of novel alloy systems
(2023)
Multi principal element alloy (MPEAs) concept allows us to rethink how we develop application-tailored, sustainable materials. The vast composition space leads to nearly indefinite material combinations and will facilitate finding Pareto optimal materials with lower CO2 footprint and avoidance of critical minerals as design criteria. To probe this large compositional space efficiently, the use high-throughput screening methods is inevitable. Diffusion-controlled synthesis of gradient materials is the optimal technique for screening complex compositional materials that would otherwise require comprehensive modelling or experimental efforts.
In this study, we have used a series of diffusion couples of pure metals and alloys with the aim to create a materials library with correlated data on composition and microstructure. With future recycling prospects in mind, and possible applications of Cu containing alloys in electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction and antimicrobial alloys we have generated diffusion couples of brass (Cu63Zn37) and bronze (Cu89Sn11) with either pure metals (Fe, Ni, etc.) or with binary or ternary alloys (FeNi, FeNiCr etc.). For different diffusion times and temperatures, we calculated diffusion constants for the material combinations. Following a detailed characterisation of the gradient materials, we have investigated general and local corrosion properties, electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CRR) as well as mechanical properties (hardness, elastic modulus) on single-phase alloys synthesized in bulk by means of vacuum arc-melting based on the selected local compositions.
In most cases, due to the short diffusion times, the contact between the diffusion couples lead to two separate diffusion zones and thus, different alloy families on both sides. Especially with ternary alloys, interesting selective diffusion processes and unexpected repulsion effects were observed. The presentation will provide an overview of the gradient materials with a focus on the functional properties of single-phase alloy families derived from them.
BAM acts as authority and for service in safety assessment of packages for transport and storage of radioactive materials. We offer extensive test capabilities and application of analytical methods for design verification and simulation for all types of packages for the transport and storage of radioactive materials according with the international IAEA Regulations for the safe transport and for national storage acceptance criteria. BAM operates several test facilities for drop and stacking testing, leak testing and thermal testing. The large drop test tower allows dropping full-scale specimens up to 200,000 kg in any drop orientation as requested. The comprehensive test facilities combined with long-term experience, newest equipment and measurement devices according to the latest state-of-the-art technology ensures realisation of complex test campaigns for package safety evaluation.
Beyond that, non-destructive and destructive material test devices and experts are available. Equipment and application of all kinds of typical measurement categories can be offered for testing campaigns.
In recent years we performed testing of full-scale type B package models with complex handling and preparation procedures. The results were contributed for different package design approval procedures. Type A packages mainly designed for medical related transport purposes, were continuously tested according to the transport regulations over recent years as well. Moreover, we work on research topics with relevance to package safety. The mechanical behaviour of lid closure systems under transport and storage conditions and the thermal behaviour of impact limiters were recently of special importance for the assessment competencies of BAM and were investigated under use of our test facilities.
The paper describes the test facilities and capabilities for package design safety evaluation at BAM and shows examples from our recent work.

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a spectroscopic method for detecting the chemical composition of optically accessible surfaces. In principle, the measurement of all elements of the periodic table is possible. System calibrations allow the quantification of element concentrations. In combination with scanner systems, the two-dimensional element distribution can be determined. Even rough surfaces can be measured by online adjustment of the laser focus. To detect element ingress into the concrete, typically cores are taken, cut in half, and LIBS measurements are performed on the cross-section. The high spatial resolution as well as the simultaneous multi-element analysis enables a separate evaluation of the binder-matrix and aggregates. Therefore, the element concentrations can be determined directly related to the cement paste. LIBS measurements are applicable in the laboratory, on-site and also over a distance of several meters.
Common applications include the investigation of material deterioration due to the ingress of harmful ions and their interaction in porous building materials. LIBS is able to provide precise input parameters for simulation and modelling of the remaining lifetime of a structure. Besides the identification of materials, also their composition can be determined on hardened concrete, such as the type of cement or type of aggregate. This also involves the identification of environmentally hazardous elements contained in concrete. Another possible application is the detection of the composition of material flows during dismantling. Non-contact NDT for “difficult to assess” structures as an example application through safety glass or in combination with robotics and automation are also possible.
This work presents the state of the art concerning LIBS investigations on concrete by showing exemplary laboratory and on-site applications.
The application of multivariate data analysis is essential in extracting the full potential of laser-induced XUV spectroscopy (LIXS) for high-precision elemental mapping. LIXS offers significant advantages over traditional laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy in UV-vis (LIBS), including higher precision and a wider dynamic range,[1,2] while making it possible to determine light elements like lithium and fluorine. However, it is challenged by the presence of unresolved transition arrays (UTAs) for heavier elements. These UTAs add considerable complexity to the spectral data, often concealing crucial information. In this study, we employ well-established multivariate data analysis techniques and intensive data preprocessing to unravel this contained information.
The refined analysis reveals a high level of detail, enabling the precise identification of inhomogeneities within material samples. Our approach has particular relevance for studying aging processes in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), specifically in relation to varying cathode materials and fluorine-containing polymer binder content. By combining elemental distribution with structural information, this improved method can offer a more comprehensive understanding of sample inhomogeneities and aging processes in LIBs, contributing to the development of more reliable and sustainable battery technologies.
Laser-induced XUV spectroscopy (LIXS) is an emerging technique for elemental mapping. In comparison to conventional laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy in UV-vis (LIBS), it has a higher precision and wider dynamic range, and it is well suited for the quantification light elements like lithium and fluorine. Further it can spot oxidation states. The XUV spectra are produced at a very early stage of the plasma formation. Therefore, effects from plasma evolution on the reproducibility can be neglected. It has been shown, that high-precision elemental quantification in precursor materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) can be performed using LIXS. Based on these results, LIXS mapping was used to investigate aging processes in LIBs. Different cathode materials with varying compositions of fluorine containing polymer binders were compared at different stages of aging. Due to effects comparable to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy but in reverse, monitoring of changes in the oxidation state is envisioned, which makes information about the chemical environment of the observed elements accessible. The combination of elemental distribution and structural information leads to a better understanding of aging processes in LIBs, and the development of more sustainable and safe batteries.
Research into new sources for EUV lithography is driving advancements in experimental methods tailored for this short wavelength range. This progress enables the exploration of spectroscopic techniques aimed at monitoring electronic transitions within this energy spectrum. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) serves as a rapid tool for elemental analysis, primarily established in the UV-vis range. However, LIBS encounters challenges such as limited repeatability precision and elevated background noise resulting from continuum radiation.
In parallel, laser-induced extreme UV spectroscopy (LIXS) delves into the initial stages of plasma evolution, characterized by the emergence of soft X-ray and extreme UV radiation. The method benefits from a fast timeframe and constrained plasma confinement, leading to better precision. Nevertheless, LIXS encounters convoluted spectra arising from unresolved transition arrays (UTA), particularly pronounced for heavier elements. This complexity renders conventional univariate data analysis impractical, demanding the adoption of a multivariate data analysis approach.
Multiple cathode samples, each coated with varying stoichiometries of lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC), were prepared and used for calibration purposes. Through the application of Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression, a robust correlation with an R2 value exceeding 0.97 was achieved. The LIXS technique underwent a comparative evaluation against UV-vis LIBS. Furthermore, a comparison between univariate and multivariate analysis approaches was conducted, incorporating validation through y-randomization to mitigate overfitting risks.
The viability of this approach was confirmed through the testing of an NMC reference material. The results showed metrological compatibility with reference values, underscoring the potential capability of the proposed methodology.
Setting up sensors for the purpose of environmental monitoring should be a matter of days, but often drags over weeks or even months, preventing scientists from doing real research. Additionally, the newly developed hardware and software solutions are often reinventing existing wheels. In this short paper, we revisit the design of our environmental sensing node that has been monitoring industrial areas over a span of two years. We share our findings and lessons learned. Based on this, we outline how a new generation of sensing node(s) can look like.
Gas distribution mapping (GDM) is a valuable tool for monitoring the distribution of gases in various applications, including environmental monitoring, emergency response, and industrial safety. While GDM is actively researched in the scope of gas-sensitive mobile robots (Mobile Robot Olfaction), there is a potential for broader applications utilizing sensor networks. This presentation gives an overview of the different approaches to GDM and motivate the use of a deep-neural network-based approach. As access to ground truth representations of gas distributions remains a challenge in GDM research, an approach for the simulation of realistic-shaped synthetic gas plumes is described, which was used for training Gas Distribution Decoder, a deep neural network for spatial interpolation of spatially sparse gas measurements.
