The impact fracture behavior of two common high-density polyethylene grades for container applications were intensively studied by the instrumented Charpy impact test after well-defined exposure to UV-irradiation. Individual stages of the impact event, such as crack initiation and crack propagation energy as well as maximum impact load, were investigated from the recorded load–deflection curves. UV-induced material property changes were further investigated by infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and dynamic-mechanical analysis as well as density measurements. Based on the results of the Charpy impact test, three indicators were identified to describe the extend of photooxidation on high-density polyethylene: (a) a reduced Charpy impact strength—at least to half of its initial value for a distinctly brittle impact fracture, (b) a marked decrease in the crack propagation contribution to the impact strength, and (c) an increase of the brittle features of the fracture surface.
ToF-SIMS has been used to study the surface functionalization of polypropylene and polyethylene samples by exposure to low-pressure ammonia plasma. Static secondary ion mass spectrometry is an appropriate tool to determine hydrogen isotopes as elements and in fragment ions with high sensitivity and selectivity. Specifically the exchange of hydrogen isotopes and the incorporation of N-containing moieties in the near-surface layer of the polyolefins have been studied in ND3 plasma experiments with conventional polypropylene (h-PP) and polyethylene (h-PE) and NH3 plasma experiments with deuterated polyethylene (d-PE). Considering the exchange of hydrogen between the plasma and the polymer surface studied by using deuterated ammonia and polyolefin samples the conclusion has been derived that polypropylene with its side chain methyl groups is more susceptible to hydrogen exchange reactions. For ND3 plasma treatment of polyethylene and polypropylene similar N-containing fragments were obtained and the measured semi-quantitative ToF-SIMS N-uptake data are rather similar. The observation of a wide range of characteristic mixed CkNlHmDn+ secondary fragment ions suggests complex and manifold reaction pathways at the polymer–plasma interface besides simple grafting of –ND2 or –NH2 moieties formed by ammonia fragmentation in the plasma. Finally, indications of an isotopic effect for hydrogen isotopes in the plasma process have been observed by comparison of ND3/h-PE results with those of NH3/d-PE.
A series of Cp(C5H5)ZrCl2 and Cp2ZrCl2 pre-catalysts (Cp = C5HMe4, C4Me4P, C5Me5, C5H4tBu, C5H3-1,3-tBu2, C5H2-1,2,4-tBu3) together with (C5H5)2ZrCl2 was used for the directed oligomerization of propene and 1-hexene in comparative experiments. Oligomer characterization was carried out by 1H NMR, SEC (GPC), MALDI-TOF MS, cryoscopy and Raman spectroscopy. From 1H NMR the nature and relative ratio of the double-bond end group is determined together with n if every oligomer molecule contains such a double-bond end group. Normally vinylidene double bonds (from -hydrogen elimination) are found. From 1H NMR and MALDI-TOF MS also vinyl end groups (from -methyl elimination) are observed in the case of oligopropenes with (C4Me4P)- (C5H5)ZrCl2 and with the symmetrical methyl containing Cp2ZrCl2 pre-catalysts. The vinylidene/vinyl ratio depends on the ligand and increases from C5HMe4 (65/35) over C4Me4P (61/39) to C5Me5 (9/91). A comparison of n from 1H NMR and SEC together with MALDI-TOF MS shows that the phospholyl-zirconocenes and (C5HMe4)2ZrCl2 also exhibit chain transfer to aluminium, thereby giving saturated oligomers.
