Fromm's Humanistic Psychoanalysis

  • Theories of Personality has the primary purposes of reviewing basic concepts and principles of the major theories of personality and of assessing how well they meet criteria for judging their scientific worth. It also introduces students to the newest issues and developments in the discipline of personality psychology. / The material is presented in a clear and understandable manner for undergraduates who have had little or no exposure to the field of personality psychology. I have included many case studies to show how the theories are applied to the treatment of personality problems. There are also numerous examples from everyday life and unusual topics to stimulate student interest. Each major theoretical position is introduced by an objective overview of the theorist's basic concepts and propositions, so that comparisons of the theorists should follow rather easily. – Index: Part 1: An introduction to the discipline – Personality and the scientific outlook – How is personality defined? – Why a scientific study of personality? – Science and common sense – The scientific orientation: Theory and research methodology – Criteria for the evaluation of scientific theories – Part 2: Psychoanalytic and neoanalytic perspectives – Freud: Psychoanalytic theory – Jung: Analytical psychology – Adler: Individual psychology – Horney: Social and cultural psychoanalysis – FROMM: Humanistic psychoanalysis – Erikson: Psychoanalytic ego psychology – Part 3: Trait perspectives – Allport: Trait theory – Cattell: Structure-based systems theory – Eysenck: Biological typology – Part 4: Cognitive perspectives – Kelly: Theory of personal constructs – Part 5: Humanistic-existential perspectives – Maslow: Self-actualization position – Rogers: Person-centered theory – May: Existential-analytic position – Part 6: Social-behavioristic perspectives – Skinner: Operant analysis – Rotter: Expectancy-reinforcement value model – Bandura: Social cognitive theory – Part 7: The future of personality psychology – New directions in the discipline – Subject index – Name index.
