[Bruner’s Narrative and Its Suggestions]

  • Education, including teaching knowledge and skills essential for social lives, is the legacy of society or cultural community and brings changes to the society as well. Since education focused on having knowledge and skills that facilitate higher social position, it has left students in cultural pains such as violation, discrimination, alienation, indifference, etc. Schools should be the learning community where students understand their existence and lives. Also students should construct themselves using narrative (or narrative mode of thinking) that helps students to integrate their experience, intention, needs and thoughts together, and understand the world they live in. In the view of narrative, the structure of knowledge is not the reality that must be found somewhere but the object that we should explore and build. Through the structure of knowledge, we can find and understand the reality of the world. Thus the structure of knowledge can be narrative and vice versa. Self is not generated only inside of a person, but instead it interacts with culture continuously. We make meaning through the interaction with culture and understand ourselves. Members of cultural community construct themselves and transact meaning with others using narrative. In other words, narrative is expressed in us ourselves even though we conceal our own stories with self-protection and manipulation. Narrative is directly related to history, literature and law but it is also concerned with the development of self-identity and culture, which consequently has an influence on education. Schools based on narrative should focus on students themselves and provide opportunities for students to make their own stories and develop narrative mode of thinking. They should not be the places that deliver subject matter, separate ideas from experience, and alienate theories from practices. Narrative fosters schools to connect students' learning with their lives and to handle students' interest, efforts and motivation. Narrative can be the best way to build desirable school culture, but folk psychology and folk pedagogy of schools must be understood before implementing and operating narrative in schools. Therefore, we should consider narratives of subjects, teachers and curriculum in our culture before we discuss and adopt the narrative in the field of subject matter education, teacher education and curriculum.
