Ideology as a False Answer to Man's Existential and Historical Dichotomies. The Humanistic Ethics of Erich Fromm (A Symposium)

  • Contends that E. FROMM, in the 1960s and early 1970s, negated the then theory that instincts were literally the physiologic expression of an actual physical anatomical disorder. FROMM considered the role of one's society in shaping personality as more potent than one's biology. He pointed out that there is an ongoing social pattern to evaluate oneself and others >as a commodity and one's value and exchange value (that) I call the marketing orientation<. Despite new information about neurophysiology, it is concluded that FROMM's approach continues to demonstrate its power to enhance one's productivity and to be in charge of one's life and to be aware of the impact of societal forces.
