Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Expatriates Living in Berlin

  • This paper examines the relationship between cross-cultural adaptation and job performance with expatriates who live in Berlin. A positive relationship between cross-cultural adaptation and job performance of expatriates is generally assumed, yet empirical studies do not consistently confirm this relationship. This cross-sectional study consists of a quantitative survey which will examine cross-cultural adaptation, cultural intelligence, and job performance among 58 participants. This study will also address other variables that have may have an influence among expatriate adjustment and performance and include the following: gender, age, time spent in host country, and family presence. This study does confirm the relationship between cross-cultural adaptation and job performance as well as the relationship between cultural intelligence and job performance as significant but only moderately correlated. The gender difference does show that females score statistically significant higher among males in cross-cultural adaptation and job performance; however, there was a weak correlation. Age, time spent in host country, and family presence show a weak or non-correlation with cross-cultural adaptation, cultural intelligence, and job performance.
