Binaural technology can provide novel and immersive experiences to listeners for audio media that are easily accessible via headphones. However, the reproduction of musical content provided through binaural technology typically remains fixed to a static orientation of the listener. In this master’s thesis, the effect of head-tracking on the perceived quality of binaural music playback was examined. An evaluation system was designed by combining a pre-existing renderer and a head-tracking sensor with an adapted evaluation platform. Four programme items were chosen as an exemplary selection of pieces from different genres and were reproduced through an immersive speaker layout in a virtual listening room. In the main listening test, the Multiple Stimulus Ideal Profile Method (MS-IPM) was used for the pairwise comparison of static and dynamic playback conditions with respect to the single item ’overall subjective quality’. Additionally, the systems were rated on six descriptive attributes selected by the author, which involved ratings for an imaginary reference system with ideal quality. A generic HRTF was used for both conditions.
No common linear effect of head-tracking on overall quality was found across programme items. A significant positive effect was found for only one stimulus. Specific aspects of the perceived spatial reproduction quality appeared to be positively affected by head-tracking, but a generalization of the attribute ratings remains limited. A Principal Component Analysis suggested that among the assessed attributes, ’spatial presence’ and ’timbre’ most contributed to overall quality. It was assumed that, depending on the programme material, head-tracking might have lead to a more engaging listening experience through an increased sense of presence, whilst, for critical listeners, undesired features might have been more easily noticed with the dynamic condition, thus affecting overall quality. However, also other underlying effects appear likely. The results obtained with the MS-IPM method could be used for a broad discussion and it was therefore considered well suited as an exploratory method for the research topic at hand. Future research could address content- specific requirements regarding listener expectations or the optimization of the binaural simulation. A more detailed analysis of underlying cognitive and affective processes could provide further insights regarding the formation of subjective quality in the field of immersive music playback.
