In the field of guided waves for non-destructive testing, the interaction of these waves with damages or other discontinuities in a structure is critical. When a guided wave mode travels and hits a defect, it scatters in all directions, converting to other modes and reflecting the existing one. These interactions are captured in scattered far field complex amplitudes. The amplitudes are stored in scattering matrices, which characterise the elastodynamic behaviour of a defect completely. Scattering matrices are also useful to simulate backpropagation from a defect using ray-tracing methods.
Simulating these interactions is challenging, and analytical solutions only exist for simple geometries. Still, using general tools like the finite element method results in large, usually costly models. Recently, researchers proposed a method based on a numerical implementation of the Kirchhoff–Helmholtz integral that allows the computation of the scattering matrices using a model containing only the damaged region. However, classical methods to resolve the far field and low-order elements were used, leading to large models yet more efficient than using other techniques.
We propose using the SBFEM as an alternative to enhance the computation of the far field scattering. The damaged region is discretised using high-order polyhedral elements, while the far field is constructed using a modified version of the SBFEM. Examples compared to the literature demonstrate the validity of the approach.
For dangerous goods packagings, drop testing onto an essential unyielding target can be used to assess the mechanical resistance to impact loads. Adopted regulations like ADR/RID require that the impact surface provided shall be integral with a mass at least 50 times than that of the heaviest package to be tested. The problem is that many manufacturers do not possess impact targets that satisfy the required 50 times mass ratio for regulative drop tests during series production. The objective of this work is to verify existing and define improved criteria for impact target structures based on systematic investigations. Previous evidence highlights the relevance of other parameters in addition to the mass ratio. Therefore, in this research, a variation of drop test parameters was carried out experimentally. Furthermore, numerical vibration analysis was applied to investigate the deformability of the impact surface. The results conclude that the mass ratio of 1:50 cannot be defined as a decisive criterion. In order to determine the influence of further drop test parameters, the research findings were used to validate a parametric model which assesses impact target deflection. An approximation quality of over 90 % was achieved. As a result, new evaluation criteria are proposed. Firstly, a method for identifying critical impact target designs is provided. Secondly, a new comprehensive formula compares the approximated maximum deflection of a real impact target to the respective theoretical threshold derived from a worst-case assumption. In practice, this leads to great advantages in the evaluation of already installed impact targets for dangerous goods packagings.

This presentation summarizes recent developments within the scope of the national pre-standardization project “ZfPStatik”, which aims to prepare a guideline about NDT-supported structural analyses. The focus is on the purposeful and explicit utilization of geometrical tendon and reinforcement bar positions measured on-site in reliability analysis — shown by means of a prestressed concrete bridge as case study.
Griffigkeit, Ebenheit, Lärmminderung, in zahlreichen Forschungsprojekten umfassend untersucht.
In this presentation, the team security research of division 2.1 informs about current research efforts in the field of traumatic brain injury. The focus lies on the consequences of low-level blast on the human brain. Also the general research approaches of the team for the investigation of the behaviour of shock waves within human tissues are presented.

Asphalt is one of the most common materials used in road construction. It is subject to both chemical and structural aging processes during use. At least to our knowledge, it is not currently known whether these aging processes also lead to a measurable change in the thermal properties of asphalt. If so, these changes could be exploited for non-destructive testing of the aging condition in situ. Photothermal analysis of a component surface involves looking at the time course of the surface temperature during and after pulse-like heating with an expanded laser beam. In the case of concrete surfaces, this method works well under laboratory conditions. It allowed the determination of the thermal effusivity. Now it should be investigated whether the photothermal signal allows conclusions to be made regarding the aging state of the asphalt. Within the scope of this paper, 2 asphalt specimens were investigated: a closed asphalt with 3% void content (SMA 11S) and an open-pore asphalt with 25% void content (PA 8). Both samples were artificially degraded according to a standardized procedure, leaving a portion of the surface unaffected. Subsections from both areas were then separated for photothermal testing. It was found, that the photothermal method is apparently not sensitive enough to detect aging on asphalt in general. However, it is noteworthy that both asphalt types heat up significantly faster than would be expected from the theory of heat conduction, which might be explained by the specific microstructure.
Materials and components for oxygen service must be tested and found suitable for their intended use. For a fire or burn out, three requirments have to be present: Fuel, Oxygen and an ignition source. The presentation gives practival examples for all these three requirements and explaines the background and the assessment criteria of tests at BAM. However, risks still exist and can lead to severe accidents. Some accidents, their effects as well as the possible causes are presented to raise awareness of the specific dangers when handling oxygen.
Finite element (FE) models are widely used to capture the mechanical behavior of structures. Uncertainties in the underlying physics and unknown parameters of such models can heavily impact their performance. Thus, to satisfy high precision and reliability requirements, the performance of such models is often validated using experimental data. In such model updating processes, uncertainties in the incoming measurements should be accounted for, as well. In this context, Bayesian methods have been recognized as a powerful tool for addressing different types of uncertainties. Quasi-brittle materials subjected to damage pose a further challenge due to the increased uncertainty and complexity involved in modeling crack propagation effects. In this respect, techniques such as Digital Image Correlation (DIC) can provide full-field displacement measurements that are able to reflect the crack path up to a certain accuracy. In this study, DIC-based full field measurements are incorporated into a finite element model updating approach, to calibrate unknown/uncertain parameters of an ansatz constitutive model. In contrast to the standard FEMU, where measured displacements are compared to the displacements from the FE model response, in the force-version of the standard FEMU, termed FEMU-F [1], displacements are applied as Dirichlet constraints. This enables the evaluation of the internal forces, which are then compared to measured external forces, thus quantifying the fulfillment of the momentum balance equation as a metric for the model discrepancy. In the present work, the FEMU-F approach is further equipped with a Bayesian technique that accounts for uncertainties in the measured displacements, as well. Via this modification, displacements are treated as unknown variables to be subsequently identified, while they are allowed to deviate from the measured values up to a certain measurement accuracy. To be able to identify many unknown variables; including constitutive parameters and the aforementioned displacements, the Variational Bayesian technique proposed in [2] is utilized as an approximative technique. A numerical example of a three-point bending case study is presented first to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The parameters of a gradient-enhanced damage material model [4] are identified using noisy synthetic data, and the effect of measurement noise is studied. The ability of the suggested approach on identifying constitutive parameters is then validated using real experimental data from a three-point bending test from [3]. The full field displacements required as input to the inference setup are extracted through a digital image correlation (DIC) analysis of the provided raw images.
Bayesian updating of constitutive laws for Finite Element simulation using full field measurements
(2023)
Developed finite element (FE) models have been recognized as powerful tools for predicting the mechanical behaviour of engineered systems. As a prerequisite, those models need to be improved with respect to various uncertainties; most notably, concerning underlying physics assumptions and unknown parameters. This is very often accomplished by comparing the performance of a model (e.g. the model response) against available data measured from real experiments. Another challenge emerges in doing that, however, which is accounting for uncertainties of measured data. Bayesian methods have been widely considered and utilized as a suitable approach for coping with and quantifying the aforementioned uncertainties. Phenomena like damage - in particular in quasi-brittle materials - introduce further uncertainties due to the complexity underlying the crack propagation of phenomenon. This implies that, the fitting of a numerical model and an associated constitute law that can adequately describe such effects is non-trivial. The standard approach of finite element model updating (FEMU) is therefore modified to account for tracking of the crack propagation, as recorded during an experiment under increasing loading, via full field displacement measurements. The latter are fed as Dirichlet constraints to an available finite element model, leading to the evaluation of force residuals, which quantifies the accuracy of the model. This approach - which is known as FEMU-F (force-version of the standard FEMU) [1] - is here further equipped with a Bayesian technique, which accounts for the measurement uncertainties in the full field displacement. This is achieved by penalizing the discrepancy between the measured displacements and the modeled Dirichlet constraints, where the latter are considered as further unknowns. We specifically employ the Variational Bayesian technique, proposed in [2], as an approximating tool for the estimation of posterior parameters, including displacement variables that are allowed to deviate from the measurements. A Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is also used for sampling the posterior distribution of the unknown model parameters. The model updating procedure is first demonstrated through a numerically simulated example of threepoint bending, where the parameters of a gradient-enhanced damage material model [4] are identified in accordance with synthetic noisy data (displacements and reaction forces). For the validation, experimental data from a three-point bending test are used, where full field displacements are collected through a digital image correlation (DIC) analysis (raw data taken from [3]). The data is then used for the parameter identification of a gradient damage constitutive law, which is employed as an ansatz model
For intumescent coatings durability is an important aspect. Due to ageing, which is caused by climatic conditions, the thermal protection performance of intumescent coatings can be reduced during the working life. The national German and the European procedures to assess the durability of intumescent coatings presume a working life of 10 years. For a longer period, additional investigations are required. However, the European assessment procedure does not provide specific information how to prove a durability of more than 10 years. In addition to this formal reason, also from a scientifical position, it is necessary to investigate the degradation of intumescent coatings in detail to propose a corresponding test concept for a durability of more than 10 years.
The presentation summarises the existing knowledge about the degradation behaviour and ageing of intumescent coatings. Furthermore, the results of different approaches from a recently conducted research project are presented. Starting from a water-based and an epoxy-based guide formulation, in a first approach a degradation of the intumescent coating was carried out directly during the production process, i.e. by reducing the concentration of functionally relevant chemical components. In another approach, the duration of the short-term weathering tests was significantly extended, i.e. by multiple repetition of the artificial weathering. The thermal protection performance of the intumescent coating was assessed by fire tests and tests with electrical heating source. In addition, small-scale tests were carried out to determine the thermal material properties of the intumescent coating and thermo-analytical methods were applied to characterise the degradation. Derived from this knowledge, possibilities to test and assess a working life for a period of more than 10 years are proposed.
After describing the basics of distributed fiber optic sensing in general and distributed fiber optic acoustic sensing (DAS) in particular, several currently and previously investigated fields of application of DASin infrastructure monitoring and seismic monitoring are presented. A focus is placed on seismic measurements and DAS measurements determining the dynamic responses of concrete structures to certain stimuli.
The long-term preservation of our infrastructure requires not only intelligent sensor technology and highly developed monitoring procedures, but also innovative digital tools for analyzing, evaluating and utilizing the results. This includes mathematical and, in particular, probabilistic methods for damage detection and tracking as well as for calculating service life and maintenance cycles and data management. The example project Maintal Bridge Gemuenden as part of the AISTEC project shows the workflow for the implementation of structural health monitoring and experimental tests with a train of Deutsche Bahn. The influence lines, as one possible way for damage detection, were measured with a highly accurate GNSS System to locate the trains position when crossing the bridge. The results were compared to measurements from 1987 just before the bridge went in operation.
Avoiding antimony – effect of Ca(H2PO2)2 on smoke emission and fire behaviour in brominated ABS
(2023)
The replacement of antimony trioxide (Sb2O3) in brominated flame-retardant ABS (ABS/FR) is of great interest. This study investigates the influence of calcium hypophosphite (CaP) in ABS/FR on flame retardancy and smoke emission. Different amounts of talc are added to ABS/FR/CaP to evaluate the influence of an inorganic barrier on smoke emission and flame retardancy. The cone calorimeter unveiled a reduction by 46% in PHRR for ABS/FR/CaP. Additional 8 wt.-% talc (ABS/FR/CaP/8Talc) reduced the PHRR by 61%. ABS/FR/CaP exhibited a more condensed phase action, which resulted in less smoke emission. The study investigates the influence of CaP in ABS/FR on the smoke toxicity, smoke density and the smoke particles distribution in the smoke density chamber (ISO 5659-2) coupled to a FTIR spectrometer and electrical low pressure cascade impactor (ELPI).
Blast furnace cements (CEM III) and alkali-activated slags are binders for concretes with several advantageous engineering properties, and their increased adoption in construction industry could contribute to reducing the CO2 emissions associated with cement production and use. However, the current knowledge about how these cements protect steel reinforcement in concretes against corrosion is very incomplete, which impedes their large-scale application. This knowledge gap is mainly due to the fact that these cements release sulfide and other reduced sulfur species into the concrete pore solution, the consequences of which for the state of the reinforcement and electrochemical measurements are not fully understood.
The present contribution first describes peculiarities of electrochemical measurements of steel in sulfide-containing cementitious materials and related solutions as reported in the literature and a recent report by EFC Working Party 11. It is demonstrated that the high sulfide concentrations in these systems lead to low open circuit potentials and low polarisation resistances, which may be incorrectly interpreted as indicating active corrosion of the steel.
Second, preliminary results of an ongoing project [funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) – 458297195] related to the passivation and corrosion initiation of steel in sulfide-containing solutions and mortars are presented. Eight mortars based on one alkali-activated blast furnace slag (BFS), three alkali-activated BFS/fly ash blends, one sodium sulfate-activated CEM III/C (‘hybrid cement’), one CEM III/C, one CEM III/B, and one CEM I (ordinary Portland cement, OPC) were produced, and their pore solutions expressed and analysed after 7, 14, 28, and 56 days of curing. The pH values of the solutions differed systematically, with the highest pH values recorded for the CEM I and the alkali-activated BFS/fly ash blends with a high proportion of fly ash, and the lowest pH recorded for the CEM III/B. The redox potentials of the solutions were between −500 mV and −340 mV vs. Ag/AgCl for the alkali-activated binders, approx. +10 mV vs. Ag/AgCl for the CEM I, and in between for the CEM III/B and the CEM III/C. As expected, the electrical conductivity was highest for the alkali-activated binders. These results are explained by the chemical compositions of the pore solutions of the mortars.
Finally, a test set-up to investigate the behaviour of steel in sulfide-containing solutions and the changes on subsequent oxygen and/or chloride addition is introduced. Preliminary electrochemical measurements of steel in sulfide-containing solutions are presented and discussed in the context of the above-mentioned data from the literature and the compositions of the pore solutions of the studied mortars.
Packages for the transport of radioactive material shall meet the mechanical and thermal test requirements of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regulations for package design approval. Besides mechanical testing, the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) performs thermal tests in accordance with the IAEA regulations. The thermal test includes a 30-minute 800°C fully engulfing fire.
BAM continuously performs various thermal experiments for the investigation of the thermal response of packages with respect to the IAEA fire. The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of the already performed, ongoing and future physical tests and experiments of BAM in the field of thermal investigations. These research and development works shall support our competencies for the authority package design assessment.
BAM operates a propane gas fire test facility. To be able to carry out comparative investigations and validity between the propane fire and the in detail prescribed pool fire test in the regulations, BAM carries out various calorimetric tests and investigates the boundary conditions of the fire with the help of fire reference packages. At the same time, we are conducting various fire scenarios with wood-filled impact limiters. Large-scale fire tests of impact limiters are carried out on a full scale as well as on a small scale. Influencing variables are investigated in particular by means of geometric changes and the consideration of artificial damages, in particular holes. In addition to propane fire as a heat source, thermal scenarios are also investigated with hydrogen as heat source and an infrared radiator system to ignite test specimens. For these numerous test arrangements, the transferability to existing and newly developed transport package designs is essential and fruitful within the review of design approvals, especially for Dual Purpose casks with a long-lasting operation time.
In the course of tomorrow's hydrogen-based energy transition, the construction of the corresponding infrastructure will play a central role. In that context, large diameter long-distance transmission pipelines for hydrogen will be the backbone in the European Union with service pressures from 70 to 90 bar (e.g., depending on national regulations). It is a major goal to rededicate the existing LNG infrastructure despite the necessity of new pipelines. From that point of view repairing of such transmissions pipelines via welding can be necessary. For the LNG infrastructure, it is state of the art that repair welding is conducted at pipelines under service, i.e., the LNG is still flowing as pressurized gas in the steel pipes. The reason is that a shut-down of large diameter pipelines is not so easy or sometimes impossible. In fact, as long no oxygen enters the pipeline, there would be any combustion or (in the worst case) explosion. At the moment, it is entirely open if current repair welding procedures for LNG pipelines can be transferred to pure hydrogen pipelines. In opposite to LNG, hydrogen can be way easier absorbed to the pipeline steels and diffuses through the material. If it accumulates in susceptible regions, i.e., in the welded joint, hydrogen assisted embrittlement could occur. The planned welding procedure requires a so-called preheating and maintenance of the weld joint of up to 300°C for several hours. This temperature is way higher compared to the typical service temperature of max. 40 to 50°C at operational pressures of 100 bar. In accordance to API 941, these low-alloyed pipeline steels are subjected to short-term service loads, which they are not designed for. For that reason, a collaborative project between BAM and DVGW (German Association for Gas and Water professions) was initiated in 2022 to answer the following questions by experiments and numerical simulation of: (1) How many hydrogen is additionally absorbed during the heating of the material to max. 300°C under remaining operational pressures? (2) Is the hydrogen concentration sufficient to reach a critical condition? (3) Which material and weld microstructure is the most susceptible? (4) Is there a significant difference in the repair welding behavior of LNG pipelines that had been already in use for long-term? (5) Which welding parameters and joint dimensions must be ensured for safe repair welding repair of typical pipelines? For that reason, the present study gives an overview on the current practice in repair welding of in-service pipelines, the industrial importance of this topic for the hydrogen-based energy transition and summarizes first results.
Ultrasonic coda wave interferometry can detect small changes in scattering materials like concrete. We embedded ultrasonic transducers in the Gänstorbrücke Ulm, a monitored road bridge in Germany, to test the methodology. Since fall 2020, we've been monitoring parts of the bridge and comparing the results to commercial monitoring systems. We calculate signal and volumetric velocity changes using coda waves, and long-term measurements show that the influence of temperature on strains and ultrasound velocity changes can be monitored. Velocity change maps indicate that different parts of the bridge react differently to environmental temperature changes, revealing local material property differences. A load experiment with trucks allows calibration to improve detectability of possibly damaging events. Our work focuses on measurement reliability, potential use of and distinction from temperature effects, combination with complementary sensing systems, and converting measured values to information for damage and life cycle assessment.
The importance of tanks for storing cryogenic fluids in the energy industry is increasing because of ongoing political conflicts and the implementation of more environmentally friendly energy sources. Key representatives for the application of cryogenic tanks are natural gas in the form of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and hydrogen, e. g. in the form of Liquefied Hydrogen (LH2), for which significantly higher transport capacities can be achieved with the same transport volume using cryogenic storages than with storages based solely on overpressure.
What applies to all cryogenic transported fluids in common is their condition that must be maintained. Hence heat flows into the preserved fluid must be minimized. Thermal super Insulations (TSI) based on e. g. multilayer insulations (MLI), perlites, and vacuum are utilized for this purpose and have already proven themselves in similar applications. However, for the use of tanks for cryogenic fluids in the transport sector, there is insufficient knowledge regarding the course and consequences of incidents, which is due to the still short period of use and the few documented incidents, hence few investigations carried out in this field. Typical scenarios in the transport sector represent car accidents with collisions, fires, and their combination, which are associated with extraordinary loads on the tank.
The focus of this study is to investigate the behavior of TSI as a result of their thermal exposure to a heat source representing a fire. It is worth mentioning that this could lead to an increase of the heat flux into a tank by several orders of magnitude, and to permanent damage of the TSI, ultimately rapid release of flammable gas as well as a Boiling Liquide Expanding Vapour Explosion (BLEVE). For this purpose, a high temperature thermal vacuum chamber (HTTVC) has been developed that allows thermal loading of MLI or perlites in a vacuum and simultaneous measurement of heat flow through this TSI. The HTTVC is designed to represent realistic insulation conditions and to withstand thermal loads from typical design fires.
The HTTVC was applied to investigate TSI based on MLI and vacuum. It is shown that the thermal stress caused permanent damage to the TSI, with shrinkage, phase change, pyrolysis, and condensation being significant damage mechanisms. The results are relevant for the evaluation of accident scenarios and can thus contribute to the improvement of TSI and the development of emergency measures for the protection of persons and infrastructures.
Liquefied Hydrogen (LH2) or Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) establish themselves as important energy carriers in the transport sector. Its storage requires tanks with Thermal Super Insulations (TSI) to keep the transported fluid cold. The presentation includes 2 main topics of the department.
First TSI has proven itself in various applications over a long time, but not in the land transport sector, where accidents involving collisions, fires, and their combination are to be expected. To analyze fire scenarios a High-Temperature Thermal Vacuum Chamber (HTTVC) was developed that allows the thermal loading of thermal insulation material in a vacuum and measuring the heat flow through the TSI in parallel. Within this chamber, 5 samples were tested regarding 3 different types of MLI, rock wool, and perlites. In the presentation, the results are presented.
Second, the studying of accident scenarios enables the improvement of thermal superinsulation and to find novel insulation concepts. This is necessary for LH2 large-scale storages, for which state-of-the-art solutions are not suitable. Within the presentation, a novel insulation concept will be presented.
Hydrogen-induced stress corrosion cracking (HSCC) is well known, and highly sensitive pre-stressing steels are normally not available on the market. But in the case of existing structures, it could be necessary to ensure their safety through special kinds of investigations. Those kinds of investigations are often not applicable in a non-destructive way.
Therefore, a once in a lifetime project was initiated.
In the course of the deconstruction of the "Bridge of the 20th anniversary of the GDR" at the Altstädter Bahnhof in Brandenburg a. d. Havel, new information on the initiation of hydrogen-induced stress cracks could obtained. The initial observation to do several investigations at this bridge are several meters long longitudinal cracks in the concrete web of the box girder above and below the tension duct. The BAM was commissioned by the Brandenburg State Road Administration to participate in a corresponding joint project which is financed by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport. The added value of the new information gained in this project goes beyond the specific structure. It describes unexpected new damage patterns that can be transferred to other structures with concentrated tendons (tendon block method and Baur-Leonhardt method) and were previously unknown in this form. These should be made known to other developers to enable them to initiate any necessary actions.
One of the major results is, the wire breaks observed at this bridge can be attributed to cracking as a result of HSCC and subsequent crack growth until breakage, due to cyclic loading from traffic and alternating restraint stresses. The probable trigger here was crevice corrosion processes at the contact points of the wires to the spacer plates in superposition with high tensile stresses due to prestressing after or with in grouting the duct. Tension wire breaks, which may have occurred before grouting and during prestressing, were not detected. The unfavorable gap situation at the spacer plates occurs over the entire cross-section of the prestressing channel and can thus affect each individual prestressing wire. Losses in the load-bearing capacity of the prestressed concrete structure can then be the result. A disadvantage of the prestressing block method in this respect is that a large number of individual wires can be affected at the same time (theoretically all wires), which can reduce the prestressing effect of the concentrated tendon accordingly. With the usual use of only one tendon per web, the possibility of load transfer to other tendons is thus not given (lack of redundancy).
