Additive manufacturing of alkali-activated materials currently attracts a lot of attention, because of the possibility to produce customized high-performance elements for a range of applications, potentially being more resource-efficient than conventionally produced parts. Here, we describe a new additive manufacturing process for alkali-activated materials that is based on selective laser-heating of lithium aluminate/microsilica slurries. The new process-material combination allows to manufacture elements with complex geometries at high building rates and high accuracy. The process is versatile and transferrable to structures of sizes differing by orders of magnitude. The mechanical strength of the obtained materials was in the range of values reported for conventional metakaolin-based geopolymers, and superior to what has been hitherto reported for alkali-activated materials produced by additive manufacturing. This mechanical performance was obtained despite the fact that the degree of reaction of the lithium aluminate and the microsilica was low, suggesting that significant reactions took place only at the surface of the microsilica particles.
Additively manufactured test specimens made of polyamide 12 (PA 12) by Laser Sintering as well as of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) by Fused Layer Modelling, were characterised with active thermography directly after manufacturing and after artificial weathering. For this, two different excitation methods (flash and pulse heating) were used and compared, regarding their suitability for the detection of constructed and imprinted defects inside the test specimens. To increase the quality of the thermograms, data processing methods like thermal signal reconstruction (TSR) and Fourier Transformation after TSR were applied. To further investigate the long-term stability of the additively manufactured test specimens towards environmental stress, like UV radiation, heat, humidity, water contact and frost with active thermography, an artificial weathering test over 2000 hours (~3 months) was applied to the specimens. The monitoring of the changes in the optical properties of the weathered plastics was supplemented by spectral reflectance and UV/VIS spectroscopy.
During their lifetime, polymer components subjected to mechanical loads and environmental influences show a loss of their mechanical properties required for their specific applications. In this respect, the craze-crack damage mechanism slow crack growth (SCG) is relevant for PE-HD components used in high-performance applications such as pipes and containers for the storage and transport of dangerous goods. SCG is considered to be the major failure mechanism in polyolefins and it typically occurs suddenly and unexpectedly. Due to the fields of application, SCG is a safety relevant issue. To test for the resistance of PE-HD pipe and container materials against SCG, the full-notch creep test (FNCT) is widely applied in Europe. In this study, SCG phenomena in PE-HD are investigated in detail based on an improved FNCT, especially including the consideration of the influence of environmental liquids effecting the damage mechanism. Using an enhanced fracture surface and a crack propagation analysis with imaging techniques such as light microscopy (LM), laser scanning microscopy (LSM), X-ray computed tomography (CT-scan) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), detailed data concerning SCG are obtained.
The combined application of FNCT and such imaging techniques is explicitly advantageous and recommended to gain important information on damage occurring to PE-HD induced by mechanical stress and the influence of environmental liquids, which is essential within the Fourth Industry Revolution.

AKR an Betonfahrbahndecken - ausgewählte Einflussgrößen und neuartige AKR-Vermeidungsstrategie
(2019)

The full-notch creep test (FNCT) is a common method to evaluate the environmental stress cracking (ESC) behavior of high-density polyethylene (PE-HD) container materials . The test procedure as specified in ISO 16770 provides a comparative measure of the resistance against ESC using the time to failure of specimens mechanically loaded in a well-defined liquid environment. Since the craze-crack damage mechanism underlying the ESC process is associated with brittle failure, the occurrence of globally brittle fracture surfaces is a prerequisite to consider an FNCT measurement as representative for ESC . Therefore, an optical evaluation of FNCT fracture surfaces concerning their brittleness is essential. Due to the experimental setup, an inevitable increase of the true mechanical stress and the associated appearance of small ductile parts on fracture surfaces is induced in any case. Hence, an FNCT experiment is considered as 'valid', if the corresponding fracture surface is predominantly brittle . Based on laser scanning microscopy (LSM) height data of FNCT fracture surfaces , a universal and easy-to-use phenomenological criterion was developed to assess the validity of distinct FNCT experiments. This criterion is supposed to facilitate a quick evaluation of FNCT results in practical routine testing.
Polyether and -ester urethanes (PU) were exposed to artificial weathering at 40 °C and artificial UV radiation in a weathering chamber. In 3 parallel exposures, humidity was varied between dry, humid, and wet conditions. Material alteration was investigated by various analytical techniques like size exclusion chromatography
(SEC), liquid chromatography-infrared spectroscopy (LC-FTIR), thermal-desorption gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS), fluorescence mapping and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Our results show that depending on the weathering conditions, different degradation effects can be observed. By means of SEC an initial strong decrease of the molar masses and a broadening of the mass distributions was found. After a material dependent time span this was followed by a plateau where molar mass changes were less significant. A minor moisture-dependent degradation effect was only found for polyester PU. Fluorescence measurements on two materials revealed an increase in the luminescence intensity upon weathering process reaching a saturation level after about 500 h. The changes in the optical properties observed after different exposure conditions and times were very similar. The TD-GC-MS data showed the fate of the stabilizers and antioxidant in the course of weathering. LC-FTIR measurements revealed a change in peak intensities and the ratio of urethane and carbonyl bands.

Recent facade fires worldwide have driven change in regulations for façade fire safety in different parts of the world. The Grenfell Tower fire 2017 in London triggered a thorough investigation of many aspects of the fire. One investigation was about the UK building regulations from Dame Judith Hackett. This investigation compares the UK with the situation other parts of the world. Key findings of the review of building regulations by Judith Hackett are:
A thorough characterization of starting materials is the precondition for further research, especially for cement, which contains various phases and presents quite a complex material for fundamental scientific investigation. In the paper at hand, the characterization data of the reference cement CEM I 42.5 R used within the priority program 2005 of the German Research Foundation (DFG SPP 2005) are presented from the aspects of chemical and mineralogical compositions as well as physical and chemical properties. The data were collected based on tests conducted by nine research groups involved in this cooperative program. For all data received, the mean values and the corresponding errors were calculated. The results shall be used for the ongoing research within the priority program.
Alkali silica reaction (ASR) is a major concrete durability problem resulting in significant maintenance and reconstruction costs for concrete infrastructures all over the world. To determine whether an aggregate is potentially reactive, accelerated concrete tests are used. Aim of this study is the chemical and microstructural characterization of ASR-products formed under the performance conditions of motorway pavements and during subsequent tests on the remaining ASR susceptibility. Samples were taken from concrete motorway pavements. Some of the samples already showed first indications for beginning damages whereas others showed deteriorations only after applying a performance testing procedure for the estimation of future risk of ASR damage. In a first step ASR-products were identified by polarized light microscopy in thin sections. The reaction products where then analyzed by Raman Spectroscopy and finally the chemical composition of the ASR-products was identified by SEM with EDX.
The results indicate that most reaction products show an increasing Ca/Si-ratio with progressive crack length. If an ASR-product develops inside an aggregate and moves through the cement paste, it has a high (Na+K)/Si-ratio at the beginning which decreases with increasing distance from its place of origin. The Raman spectra of the ASR-products are characterized by two broad bands indicating specific Q-species of different amorphous gel networks. Within the scope of the analysis distinctions in the microstructure and the chemical composition of the ASR-gels were detected relating to various conditions of accelerated testing.
In recent years superglassy polymers exhibiting intrinsic microporosity established a new perspective for a number of applications, especially for gas separation membranes as These polymers Combine extremely high permeabilities with attractive selectivities. The essential factor governing the structure Formation in the solid film or layer is either a contorted rigid Backbone (polymers of intrinsic microporosity - PIMs) or extremely bulky side groups (polynorbornenes and polytricyclonenenes).
For a deeper understanding of both types of such high-Performance polymers for gas separation membranes and their further development broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) can provide a substantial contribution.
BDS addresses molecular relaxations characterizing the dynamics of the solid polymer as a major factor determining the gas transport properties but also the physical aging behavior which is an essential issue for such polymers.
BDS is applied on PIMs where fluctuations of molecular dipoles connected to the backbone can be directly monitored. Furthermore, also polynorbornenes were investigated which carry no dipole moment in their repeat unit - the high resolution of modern equipment allows for the detailed analysis also for very small dielectric losses originating from partially oxidized moieties or marginal catalyst residues.
Additionally, from interfacial polarization phenomena, such as Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars (MWS) polarization due to blocking of charge carriers at internal interfacial boundaries on a mesoscopic length scale, valuable information on the intrinsic microporosity and its changes induced by physical aging can be obtained.
Finally, also conductivity can be characterized in detail in such polymeric systems revealing contributions of interactions of aromatic moieties (π-π-stacking) or the drift motion of charge carriers. These features also determine the structure formation in the solid state.
Severe mechanical fatigue conditions for worldwide proliferating windfarms are a Major challenge for high-performance concrete in towers, connecting joints and foundations of wind turbines. High-performance concrete offers potential for the application in offshore windfarms, not only regarding its good mechanical, but also chemical resistivity due to low diffusivity in the highly densified microstructure. For a more reliable fatigue assessment, monitoring based on nondestructive testing can be a valuable complement to design rules. Both approaches demand reliable experimental data, information about scalability and the development of standardized testing methods. This article presents results of an ongoing research program of BAM (Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung), which is a part of a joint national project (WinConFat) funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The subproject implemented by BAM examines the fatigue behavior in dependence of size and slenderness for varying concrete strength at different stress levels. Besides fatigue strength, nondestructive testing is carried out additionally.
Methods used are strain measurement and ultrasonic testing. The change of strain, stiffness and ultrasonic pulse velocity in the fatigue process is discussed. Results disclose a deeper insight into the damage process under cyclic loading of high-performance concrete and contribute to improve nondestructive monitoring.

Viscosity-modifying agent (VMA) are used in several applications of concrete, such as underwater concrete, Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) or Self-Levelling Underlayments (SLU) in order to improve the washout resistance and the stability. The study focuses on the modifications of cement pastes properties implied when a VMA (hydroxypropyl guars or HPG) and a superplasticizer are introduced together. For reaching this objective, two chemically different polycarboxylate-based superplasticizers (PCE) and two HPGs exhibiting different molar substitution ratios (MSHP), were studied. A method, combining total organic carbon and size exclusion chromatography, was developed in order to quantify the adsorption of the both admixtures. The adsorption of HPGs appears being significantly lowered by the presence of PCE, while only the adsorption of the less charged PCE is slightly affected by the HPG. As consequence, strong modifications of the rheological properties of cement pastes were noticed when HPG and PCE are combined. The desorption of HPG leads to higher yield stress and residual viscosity than with PCE alone.
Depending on the CO2 generating and the capture process as well as on consecutive purification steps applied, CO2 streams from different emitters may differ in their composition. When CO2 streams with different compositions are fed into a larger pipeline network, there are several aspects that must be considered: i) chemical reactions, such as acid formation, may occur within the joint CO2 stream; ii) there may be a variation of mass flow rate and CO2 stream composition within the pipeline network if the feed-in behavior of different CO2 sources changes with time. Potential impacts of changing CO2 stream compositions and mass flow rates in CCS cluster systems were investigated in the collaborative project "CLUSTER" (see also www.bgr.bund.de/CLUSTER). In this presentation, we focus on the experimental investigations of formation and condensation of strong acids and their impacts on the corrosion of pipeline steels. When SO2, NO2, O2 and H2O are present simultaneously in CO2 streams chemical cross-reactions may occur leading to the formation of strong acids such as sulfuric and nitric acid. To prevent this acid formation the concentration of at least one of these four impurities must be kept very low (e.g., Rütters et al., 2016). At temperatures below the acid dew point temperature, acids will condense, e.g., on pipeline steel surfaces. In turn, these acid condensates may trigger steel corrosion. To better understand the process of acid formation and condensation and its implications for steel corrosion, exposure tests were performed on pipeline steel X70 in dense CO2 with varying SO2, NO2 and O2 concentration under high pressure and at 278 K in an observable autoclave, in which water was added as droplets or as vapor. Further, electrochemical tests were carried out with X70 specimens immersed in 500 mL CO2-saturated synthetic condensate solution or in droplets of the same solution on the specimen’s surface. Depending on impurity concentrations in the CO2 streams, condensates consisting of different relative amounts of nitric and sulfuric acid were formed. In condensates containing both nitric and sulfuric acid, corrosion rates were higher than the sum of those of the individual acids. In addition, corrosion products and forms depended on the condensate composition. Investigations of water droplets on steel surfaces in impurity-containing dense-phase CO2 revealed the diffusion of SO2 and NO2, followed by cross-reactions forming corresponding acids. An increase in droplet size (from 1 to 5 µl) lead to higher corrosion rates. However, in comparison to measurements in bulk solution, corrosion reactions in droplets resulted in thick, high-resistance corrosion products and observed droplet corrosion rates were significantly lower. In addition, the possibility of acid droplet formation and growth in impure liquid CO2 is influenced by the wetting behavior of the acid droplet on the steel surface. Thus, the contact angle between a water droplet and the surface steel specimens in a CO2 atmosphere was investigated in a high pressure view cell following the sessile drop method. The contact angle wasand found to be larger at higher CO2 pressures (studied from 5 to 20 MPa) and at higher temperatures (e.g. 278 K to 333 K). Further, measured contact angles were larger on rough than on smooth metal surfaces. In addition, acid formation reduced the contact angle, i.e. lead to better wetting, thereby stimulating condensation that was followed by a corrosion process. These detailed insights on the complex interplay of acid formation, condensation, wetting behavior and corrosion allow a better assessment of material suitability for pipeline transportation of impure CO2 streams
Compatibility of polymeric materials with heating oil/biodiesel blends at different temperatures
(2019)
Materials compatibility is a major concern whenever the fuel composition is changed. The question arises of whether polymeric materials are resistant to heating oil with admixtures of 10 % biodiesel (B10) and 20 % biodiesel (B20).
The polarity of biodiesel increases its solvency and facilitates permeation and extrac-tion. Solvation, swelling and/or extraction lead to changes in the physical properties and chemical changes of polymeric materials.
The objective of this research was to determine the resistance of frequently used sealing materials such as FKM, EPDM, CR, CSM, NBR, IIR, VMQ, FVMQ, PA and PUR in up to four-year aged B10 for 84 days at 20 °C, 40 °C and 70 °C.
The polymeric materials: ACM, FKM, HNBR, PA, PE; POM, PUR and PVC were ex-posed to B20 for 84 days at 40°C and 70°C in another research project.
Mass, tensile strength, breaking elongation and Shore hardness A (D) of the test specimens were determined before and after the exposure for 84 (42) days in the heating oil blends B10 and B20.
There is not determined a threshold for the reduction in tensile properties and Shore hardness in the international standards. Therefore, a threshold of 15 % was deter-mined for the evaluation of the compatibility.
Measurements of the variations in mass, tensile properties and Shore hardness after exposure of the polymers in non-aged and aged heating oil B10 showed clearly that FKM, FVMQ and PA were the most resistant materials in B10. The elastomers CR, CSM, EPDM, IIR, NBR and VMQ were generally not resistant to B10. Damage to the materials increased with higher test temperatures and the age of B10.
FKM, POM and PVC showed high compatibility in B20 at 40°C and 70 °C. ACM, HNBR and PA were evaluated as resistant in B20 at 40 °C but not at 70°C.
Biodiesel is subject to degradation processes like oil and grease. The oxidative degradation products of vegetable oil esters in biodiesel particularly lead to enhanced sedimentation in blended fuels.
The polarity of biodiesel increases its solvency and facilitates permeation and extraction. Solvation, swelling and/or extraction lead to changes in the physical properties and chemical changes of polymeric materials. It also accelerates the degradation (hydrolysis and oxidation) of these materials with the loss of additives and stabilizers.
The objective of this research was to determine the resistance of frequently used polymeric materials such as ACM, EPDM, FKM, FVMQ, CR, CSM, IIR, HNBR, NBR, PA, PE; POM, PUR, PVC and VMQ in biodiesel and heating oil with 10 %/20 % biodiesel (B10/B20) at 40°C and 70°C.
Mass, tensile strength and breaking elongation of the test specimens were determined before and after the exposure for 84 days in the biodiesel heating oil blends. The visual examination of some elastomer test specimens clearly showed the great volume increase until break or partial dissolution. Shore hardness A and D were determined before and after exposure of the test specimens in the biofuels for 42 days.
The elastomers CR, CSM, EPDM, IIR, NBR and VMQ were generally not resistant to biodiesel and B10 at 40°C and 70°C. FKM, ACM, HNBR, PA, PE, POM, and PVC showed high compatibility in B10/B20 at 40°C. A lower compatibility was determined for ACM in biodiesel. ACM and HNBR were not resistant in B20 at 70°C.
Biodiesel is viewed as a major source of energy. In areas such as the European Union, where 80 % of the oil-based fuel is imported, there is also the desire to reduce dependence on external oil supplies.
Materials compatibility is a major concern whenever the fuel composition is changed. The question arises of whether polymeric materials are resistant to heating oil with 20 % biodiesel (B20) in comparison to pure heating oil.
The polarity of biodiesel increases its solvency and facilitates permeation and extraction. Solvation, swelling and/or extraction lead to changes in the physical properties. Extraction alters the fuel chemistry. These chemical changes could also accelerate the degradation (hydrolysis and oxidation) of the polymeric material with the loss of additives and stabilizers.
The objective of this research was to determine the resistance of frequently used materials for components in middle distillate facilities such as ACM, FKM, HNBR, PA, PE, POM, PUR and PVC in heating oil and heating oil blend B20 for 84 days at 40 °C, and FKM, HNBR, PA, POM, PUR and PVC at 70 °C.
Mass, tensile strength, breaking elongation and Shore hardness A (D) of the test specimens were determined before and after exposure for 84 (42) days in the test fuels under static conditions.
For the investigations under compressed conditions, the mass and the compression set of FKM test specimens were determined before and after exposure for 3, 7, 14, 28, 56 and 90 days in B20 at 40 °C and 70 °C according to ISO 815-1 “Rubber, vul-canized or thermoplastic - determination of compression set – Part 1: At ambient or elevated temperatures”.
There is not determined a threshold for the reduction in tensile properties and Shore hardness in the international standards. Therefore, a threshold of 15 % was determined for the evaluation of the compatibility.
The change of tensile strength and breaking elongation of test specimens made of ACM, FKM, HNBR, PA, PE, POM, PUR and PVC exposed to heating oil and the blend B20 was less than 15 % at 40 °C. A maximum reduction in Shore hardness A of 14 % was determined for ACM at 40 °C and for HNBR of 15 % at 70 °C.
It can be concluded that ACM, FKM, HNBR, PA, PE, POM, PVC and PUR were resistant in B20 at 40°C. FKM, PA, POM and PVC were evaluated as resistant in heat-ing oil and B20 at 70 °C, HNBR and PUR were not resistant in these fuels at 70°C.
Based on the mass increase and compression set values of FKM test specimens it can be stated that FKM is resistant in B20 under compressed conditions at 40 °C and 70 °C.
In this also completely rewritten and reorganized second part of the two‐volume set 45 international experts comprise the current knowledge of conjugated polymers. In addition to part one on properties, processing characterization and morphology, 16 chapters cover perspectives, theory and new materials.
Finally, it can be concluded that this 4th edition of this handbook fulfills, like the first part, its intention, to be the definitive resource on the topic of conducting polymers. This is assured by the updated and added contributions of all authors, which consider the significant developments both in fundamental understanding, progress and applications since publication of the previous edition. So, it can be recommended to everyone, who wants to get a comprehensive overview on conjugated polymers, not just to researchers, advanced students, and industry professionals working in materials science and engineering.
Interfacial properties related to wettability and corrosion in CO2 transport pipelines are experimentally determined by the sessile and the pendant drop methods. The contact angle of a water drop in a compressed CO2 atmosphere is analyzed on an X70 pipeline carbon steel and compared to that on a martensitic steel S41500 to elucidate the effect of corrosion process on active wetting behaviour. The measurements are performed with liquid CO2 at 278 K and pressures ranging from 5 to 20 MPa. The results show that the contact angle (CA) increases with pressure from 132 ° to 143 ° for S41500 and from 117 ° to 137 ° for X70 and decreases with drop age by 20 ° to 24 ° regardless of the pressure and of the fact that corrosion only occurs on X70, which is confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, element mapping and energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDS) analysis. At higher pressure, the contact angles on both materials converge. Further, related properties like density and interfacial tension were determined. CO2 - saturated water has a higher density than pure water: At 5 MPa saturated water reaches a density of 1017 kg⋅m^(-3) and at 20 MPa 1026 kg⋅m^(-3) compared to pure water with a density of 1002 kg⋅m^(-3) and 1009 kg⋅m^(-3), respectively. In this pressure range the IFT drops from 33 mN⋅m^(-1)at 5 MPa to 23 mN⋅m^(-1) at 20 MPa.

Geothermal energy is an interesting alternative to polluting fossil energy sources. Therefore, in Belgium, two wells have been drilled for a deep geothermal power plant. However, the environment to which the installations are exposed is challenging. The geothermal brine has 165 g/l total dissolved solids (of which 90% are sodium and chlorine) and the production temperature can be up to 130 °C. To assess their suitability to be used in a geothermal power plant, the corrosivity of the artificial brine to three common construction materials was investigated with exposure and electrochemical tests. The metals under consideration are a low-alloyed carbon steel (S235JR), an austenitic stainless steel (UNS S31603) and a duplex stainless steel (UNS S31803). The carbon steel, that was found to corrode uniformly, could be considered as a constructional material if a sufficient wall thickness is chosen. The austenitic stainless steel and the duplex stainless steel demonstrate very low uniform
corrosion rates. They are however susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion. To guarantee safe operation of the geothermal power plant, the susceptibility of the alloys to stress corrosion cracking should be tested and in situ experiments should be performed.
The composites combining aluminum and silica nanoparticles with the addition of tetramethylammonium hydroxide (Al-SiO2(T)) and butanol (Al-SiO2(B)) as mixing media have been successfully fabricated. Corrosion behavior of Al-SiO2 composites before and after exposure in 1M NaCl solution was examined using potentiodynamic polarization (Tafel curve analysis). The study was also equipped with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) investigations. Before exposure, Al-SiO2(T) exhibited the best corrosion resistance. Performance improvement was indicated by Al-SiO2(B) up to 10 times better than Al-SiO2(T) after exposure. The increased SiO2 content did not significantly enhance the corrosion resistance of the composites. The Al-SiO2 composites with 5% SiO2 content showed very high corrosion resistance (as the optimum composition). Furthermore, pitting corrosion was observed in the Al-SiO2 composites, indicated by the formation of corrosion products at grain boundaries. The product was affected by the presence of SiO2 in the Al matrix and the NaCl environment at 90 °C (approach to synthetic geothermal media: Na+, Cl, H+, OH-). Our study revealed the presence of γ-Al2O3, γ-Al(OH)3, and Al(OH)2Cl as the dominant corrosion products.

Ageing at 600 °C (from 0.1 h up to 20 h) leads to the formation of precipitations at the ferrite-ferrite (α/α) and ferrite-austenite (α/γ) grain boundaries of the lean duplex stainless steel (LDSS) X2CrNiN22-2. This leads to sensitisation due to chromium depletion and decreased pitting corrosion resistance proven by the results of various electrochemical methods (DL-EPR and determination of CPT, Epit). These results were compared with the KorroPad method, which uses an agar-based gel-electrolyte for the detection of stainless steel surfaces prone to pitting corrosion. However, the standard configuration of the KorroPad showed no differentiation for the various ageing conditions. Therefore, modified versions of the KorroPad with two, five and ten times higher NaCl and potassium ferrocyanide III (K3[Fe(CN)6]) concentrations were successfully used to visualise the behaviour detected by DL-EPR, Epit and CPT. Therefore, the KorroPad method can also detect a microstructure related reduction of pitting corrosion resistance, which can drastically reduce the experimental effort to generate sensitisation diagrams for stainless steels.
High-density polyethylene becomes optically transparent during tensile drawing when previously saturated with diesel fuel. This unusual phenomenon is investigated as it might allow conclusions with respect to the material behavior. Microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, density measurements are applied together with two scanning X-ray scattering techniques: wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) and X-ray refraction, able to extract the spatially resolved crystal orientation and internal surface, respectively. The sorbed diesel softens the material and significantly alters the yielding characteristics. Although the crystallinity among stretched regions is similar, a virgin reference sample exhibits strain whitening during stretching, while the diesel-saturated sample becomes transparent. The WAXS results reveal a pronounced fiber texture in the tensile direction in the stretched region and an isotropic orientation in the unstretched region. This texture implies the formation of fibrils in the stretched region, while spherulites remain intact in the unstretched parts of the specimens. X-ray refraction reveals a preferred orientation of internal surfaces along the tensile direction in the stretched region of virgin samples, while the sample stretched in the diesel-saturated state shows no internal surfaces at all. Besides from stretching saturated samples, optical transparency is also obtained from sorbing samples in diesel after stretching.
Weathering reference materials (WRMs) are used to characterize the harshness of an exposure, aiming on either reproducibility of a specific exposure or on the comparability between various kinds of natural or artificial weathering exposure.
The materials that are used as weathering reference materials differ in their sensitivities (as well as in interactions and interferences of the latter), conditioned by the different processes which lead to the respective property change. It is also essential to take into account the necessary measurement equipment for the respective property change, in order to allow timely intervention.
What are the key issues on choosing a weathering reference material?
What can be learned from the weathering reference materials, investigated so far?
Possibilities and limitations are discussed on the basis of existing weathering reference materials. Conclusions are drawn, for establishing new weathering reference materials.

Polymers of Intrinsic Microporosity (PIMs) of high performance have developed as materials with a wide application range in gas separation and other energy-related fields. Further optimization and long-term behavior of devices with PIMs require an understanding of the structure-property relationships including physical aging. In this context the glass transi-tion plays a central role, but with conventional thermal analysis a glass transition is usually not detectable for PIMs be-fore their thermal decomposition. Fast scanning calorimetry provides evidence of the glass transition for a series of PIMs, as the time scales responsible for thermal degradation and for the glass transition are decoupled by employing ultrafast heating rates of tens of thousands K s-1. The investigated PIMs were chosen considering the chain rigidity. The estimated glass transition temperatures follow the order of the rigidity of the backbone of the PIMs.
Geothermal energy is one of the most promising energy resources to replace fossil fuel. To extract this energy, hot fluids of various salts and gases are pumped up from a geothermal well having a certain depth and location. Geothermal wells in volcanic regions often contain highly corrosive CO2 and H2S gases that can be corrosive to the geothermal power-plants, which are commonly constructed of different steels, such as carbon steel. This research focuses on the corrosion behaviour of carbon steel exposed to an artificial geothermal fluid containing CO2 gas, using an artificial acidic-saline geothermal brine as found in Sibayak, Indonesia. This medium has a pH of 4 and a chloride content of 1,500 mg/L. Exposure tests were conducted for seven days at 70 °C and 150 °C to simulate the operating temperatures for low and medium enthalpy geothermal sources. Surface morphology and cross-section of the specimens from the above experiments were analysed using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). Electrochemical tests via open circuit potential (OCP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were performed to understand the corrosion processes of carbon steel in CO2-containing solution both at 70 °C and 150 °C. Localized corrosion was observed to a greater extent at 70 °C due to the less protectiveness of corrosion product layer compared to that at 150 °C, where FeCO3 has a high corrosion resistance. However, a longer exposure test for 28 days revealed the occurrence of localized corrosion with deeper pits compared to the seven-day exposed carbon steel. In addition, corrosion product transformation was observed after 28 days, indicating that more Ca2+ cations incorporate into the FeCO3 structure.
While today, engineers can choose from a wide range of rheology modifying admixtures, in some parts of the world, these are difficult to access, due to their complex processing. However, alternatives can be bio-based polymers such as polysaccharides from various sources. These are easily accessible all over the world, do not demand for complicated processing, and typically they are more sustainable than many established materials, which are crude oil-based.
The paper presents the effects of acacia gum, cassava starch and the gum of triumfetta pendrata A. Rich on the rheological performance of cementitious systems. It is shown that acacia gum can be as efficient as polycarboxylate based superplasticisers, cassava starch can reduce the yield stress slightly with little effect on the plastic viscosity, and the gum of triumfetta pendrata A. Rich increases the thixotropy of cement pastes with plasticizing polymers significantly.
