The stress-induced tetragonal to monoclinic (t-m) zirconia phase transformation can provide a certain degree of plasticity to Ceria-stabilized (Ce-TZP) zirconia-based composites. Characterizing and monitoring this phase transition on a millimeter-size range, within the bulk and in-situ remains a challenge. In this work, the mechanical behavior of Ce-TZP based composite was studied in tension, combining microscopy and synchrotron Xray refraction techniques. In contrast with microscopy methods, which only provide surface information, X-ray refraction radiography (SXRR) allowed the visualization of all the transformation bands, over the entire length and thickness of tested specimens, opening up new avenues for in-situ stress-induced t-m transformation studies.
Degradation and damage analysis of composite pressure vessels via experimental modal analysis
(2023)
For mobile gas storage systems, the application of type IV pressure vessels is state of the art. Type IV tanks consist of an inner polymer liner fully wrapped with fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP). Because of the complex fabric of the FRP as well as a difficulty estimable interaction behaviour between the single components under load, there are still no satisfying non-destructive testing methods to assess the current state of failure nor to estimate the level of degradation accurately and economically. At BAM division 3.5, analysing the ageing process of mobile composite pressure vessels is a major task to ensure safe usage over the whole lifetime. In this context, key aspects of our ongoing research activities are the invention of new test procedures and the development of accurate lifetime prediction models. In order to determine the level of degradation or damage, one meaningful non-destructive approach is to analyse the structural dynamic behaviour via an experimental modal analysis (EMA). Over the last few years, different types and sizes of composite pressure vessels have been tested in several research projects. The presented paper gives an insight into how to extract and interpret modal parameters and how to fit them to the results of residual strength tests.
Magnetocaloric composite wires have been studied by pulsed-field measurements up to μ0ΔH = 10 T with a typical rise time of 13 ms in order to evaluate the evolution of the adiabatic temperature change of the core, ΔTad, and to determine the effective temperature change at the surrounding steel jacket, ΔTeff, during the field pulse. An inverse thermal hysteresis is observed for ΔTad due to the delayed thermal transfer. By numerical simulations of application-relevant sinusoidal magnetic field profiles, it can be stated that for field-frequencies of up to two field cycles per second heat can be efficiently transferred from the core to the outside of the jacket. In addition, intense numerical simulations of the temperature change of the core and jacket were performed by varying different parameters, such as frequency, heat capacity, thermal conductivity and interface resistance in order to shed light on their impact on ΔTeff at the outside of the jacket in comparison to ΔTad provided by the core.
Fiber reinforced polymers (FRPs) are a well established material in lightweight applications, e.g. in automotive, aerospace or wind energy. The FRP components are subjected to multiaxial mechanical as well as hygrothermal loads. Common operation temperatures are in the range of 213 K and 373 K (-60 °C and 100 °C) at a relative humidity of 10% to 90%. In spacecraft applications, the environmental conditions are even more extreme. However, the correlation between multiaxial mechanical loading and harsh environment conditions have to-date not been investigated in detail. The project aims to investigate the fatigue behavior of FRPs dependent on multiaxial mechanical loading, temperature, and humidity. Extensive experimental testing is performed on flat plate and cylindrical tube specimens, accompanied by numerical and analytical calculations.
The thermoelectric properties of Sr1-xBixTiO3-δ (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.07) have been investigated. Dense ceramics of Sr1-xBixTiO3-δ and Sr0.95TiO3-δ have been prepared by solid-state reaction and conventional sintering in air followed by annealing in a reducing atmosphere. XRD and SEM analyses show that the rutile TiO2 in Sr0.95TiO3 formed after sintering becomes Magnéli phase of TinO2n-1 after annealing. Moreover, Bi resolves from Sr1-xBixTiO3 after annealing, resulting in the formation of Sr1-xBixTiO3-δ/Bi/TinO2n-1 composites. With increasing Bi content in Sr1-xBixTiO3-δ, the electrical conductivity increases while the absolute values of the Seebeck coefficient decrease as a result of increasing carrier concentration. The thermal conductivity of SrTiO3-δ is reduced by doping Bi up to x = 0.07. Highest ZT ~ 0.13 is obtained in Sr0.93Bi0.07TiO3-δ at 1000 K.
Cyclic fatigue behavior of glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin at ambient and elevated temperatures
(2018)
The fatigue behavior of ±45° glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin under cyclic mechanical and constant thermal loading is investigated in this study. Tests at three different temperature levels in the range 296 K to 343 K have been performed in order to create S-N curves for each temperature level. The specimen damage is measured in-situ using optical grayscale analysis. The characteristic damage state (CDS) is evaluated for each specimen. It is shown that the point of CDS is suitable as a failure criterion to compare the resulting S-N curves. With micromechanical formulations, the temperature-dependent matrix effort is calculated for each stress-temperature level. In terms of matrix effort, the longest fatigue life is reached at high temperatures, while, in terms of stress, the lowest fatigue life is reached at the highest temperatures.

Due to high specific stiffness, fibre reinforced plastics are the dominant material group for the design of mobile pressure vessels. At the Federal Institute of Materials Research and Testing (BAM) aging process of composite pressure vessels is studied to be able to give more accurate lifetime predictions in future. Investigations are based on type III breathing air cylinders consisting of an aluminium tank which is fully wrapped with carbon fibre reinforced plastics. Goal is to detect changes of residual stresses over life time which directly affect fatigue strength. Within this paper an approach is presented to monitor residual stresses via an experimental modal analysis (EMA). First, the influence of changed stress conditions on modal parameters is analysed via a numerical study. Secondly, a test bench for an EMA is set up. To be able to analyse cylinders of different prestress condition, several specimens are prestress modified via high-temperature and high-pressure treatment. During modification processes, specimens are monitored via optical fibres to control prestress modifications. Through experimental measurements of the modified specimens via EMA changes in prestressing can be detected. Finally, validity and accuracy of the EMA is evaluated critically by comparing all numerically and experimentally obtained data.

Atomic force microscopy based Infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR) is a quickly evolving technique that provides chemical analysis and compositional mapping with spatial resolution far below conventional optical diffraction limits. This is possible since the detection method is based on a very sharp AFM tip which starts to oscillate when the sample starts to thermally expand (the changed is caused by the absorption of IR wavelength) where the thermal expansion is related to the IR absorption. This presentation briefly described the application of that new technique from polymer characterization and utilization of AFM-IR in material research, up to life science applications.
An extraction of silica from natural sands of Bancar has been conducted by means of alkali fusion route using NaOH and mechanical alloying using planetary ball milling. The PANI/SiO2 Composite system has been coated in steel surfaces using spraying method. This study was designed to obtain PANI/SiO2 as an anti-corrosion coating material. The filler materials in the composite System consist of micro- and nano-SiO2. The structure of synthesized SiO2 be characterized using XRD and TEM. Corrosion of PANI/SiO2 composite has been tested using immersion method in synthetic geothermal atmosphere (Nord Deutsche Becken/NDB solution). The surface morphology after corrosion was observed by using SEM/EDX. XRD-Patterns and TEM show that the size of produced SiO2 is micro and nano. The size and composition of filler have influenced to surface degradation in geothermal atmosphere significantly. The addition of nano-SiO2 in the PANI matrix influenced corrosion resistance better than micro-SiO2 filler qualitatively. The nano-SiO2 has a high potential as an anti-corrosion material in geothermal atmosphere. The product of corrosion is mainly Fe2O3 and the corrosion process is identified as a pitting corrosion.
Partially crystalline glasses are predominantly used as solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) sealants due to their superior long term durability. However, cracks caused by thermal cycling still remain a substantial bottleneck in developing durable SOFC sealants inasmuch as, in contrast to crystal free glasses, large crystal volume fractions can retard healing. Hence, the basic understanding of crack healing in glassy crystalline materials and the effects of micro structure are important for finding optimum micro structures for both, durability and crack healing.
For studying these effects, several model glass matrix composites (GMC), for which simultaneous crystal growth and crack healing can be excluded, have been synthesized. Sodium calcium silicate glass – zirconia GMC turned out to provide sufficiently homogeneous, dense and durable model GMC for our studies. The microstructure of this GMC shows large crystal free glassy regions embedded in network of finely dispersed ZrO2 nanoscale crystals. Whereas the glassy regions allow easy local crack healing, the network of dispersed crystals increases the effective viscosity on a global scale. This effect substantially retards crack broadening during later healing stages, which often ends up in large pores. Therefore, this type of microstructure seems to be an interesting candidate for crack healing optimized sealants.
In this study, quasi-static material tests on unidirectional and multi-angle glass fiber reinforced epoxy laminates at ambient temperatures from -213 K to 353 K (-60 °C to +80 °C) are performed. In addition, neat resin is investigated under tension and compression loads at different temperatures. The coefficient of thermal expansion is determined for neat resin and unidirectional reinforced specimens. The dependence of the resin’s thermomechanical properties on the ambient temperature is shown. The point of damage onset at which first cracks appear within the matrix under quasi-static loading is investigated by means of optical grey scale analysis. The correlation between damage onset and effective matrix stress at different ambient temperatures is identified. An approach for the calculation of thermomechanical loads and the prediction of the damage onset by means of inverse calculations is presented. The impact of the strain blocking effect of the matrix is considered as well as residual thermal stresses due to curing and resin shrinkage.

The application range of CPV (composite pressure vessels)
is multifaceted. But also the failure forms and the spectrum of measurement methods is manifold. On various, at BAM observed effects, it is shown why the micromechanical analysis of the composites is of such great interest for the prediction of aging effects of CPVs.
An exciting challenge is to create unduloid-reinforcing fibers with tailored dimensions to produce synthetic composites with improved toughness and increased ductility. Continuous carbon fibers, the state-of-the-art reinforcement for structural composites, were modified via controlled laser irradiation to result in expanded outwardly tapered regions, as well as fibers with Q-tip (cotton-bud) end shapes. A pulsed laser treatment was used to introduce damage at the single carbon fiber level, creating expanded regions at predetermined points along the lengths of continuous carbon fibers, while maintaining much of their stiffness. The range of produced shapes was quantified and correlated to single fiber tensile properties. Mapped Raman spectroscopy was used to elucidate the local compositional and structural changes. Irradiation conditions were adjusted to create a swollen weakened region, such that fiber failure occurred in the laser treated Region producing two fiber ends with outwardly tapered ends. Loading the tapered fibers allows for viscoelastic energy dissipation during fiber pull-out by enhanced friction as the fibers plough through a matrix. In these tapered fibers, diameters were locally increased up to 53%, forming outward taper angles of up to 1.8°. The tensile strength and strain to failure of the modified fibers were significantly reduced, by 75% and 55%, respectively, ensuring localization of the break in the expanded region; however, the fiber stiffness was only reduced by 17%. Using harsher irradiation conditions, carbon fibers were completely cut, resulting in cottonbud fiber end shapes. Single fiber pull-out tests performed using these fibers revealed a 6.75-fold increase in work of pull-out compared to pristine carbon fibers. Controlled laser irradiation is a route to modify the shape of continuous carbon fibers along their lengths, as well as to cut them into controlled lengths leaving tapered or cotton-bud shapes.

Characterization of multiphase metal matrix composites by means of CT and neutron diffraction
(2016)
The present study examines the relationship between the microstructure of multiphase MMC and their damage mechanisms. The matrix AlSi12CuMgNi was combined with 15% vol. Al2O3 (short fibres) and with 7% vol. Al2O3 + 15% vol. SiC (short fibres and whiskers, respectively). The experimental approach encompasses 3D microstructure characterization by means of computed tomography of samples (a) as-received, (b) after heat treatment, and (c) after compression tests at room temperature. The volume fraction of different phases, their distribution, their orientation and the presence of defects and damage are studied.
Influence of addition of SiC whiskers on mechanical properties of composite was investigated. Phase-specific load partition analysis for samples with fibre plane parallel to load was perform by using neutron diffraction measurements during in-situ compression. It shows damage in the Si phase, while Al2O3 short fibres carry load without damage until failure. The computed tomography observations confirm the load partition analysis.
Characterization of the mechanical properties of interphases is essential when designing multicomponent materials such as fiber-reinforced matrices, protective coatings or multi-layered structures for integrated circuits. It can provide vital information about the durability of the finished product as a composite because failure is often initiated in the interfacial region induced by internal or external stress during fabrication or service. Nanoindentation is a powerful tool for investigating mechanical properties on the micro/nano scale. However, there are some challenges associated with conducting nanoindentation near interface regions. One main challenge is that the small thickness of the interphase region (typically 1-2µm) makes it difficult to apply several adjacent indents without overlap. Another issue is that the indentations are usually restricted by local reinforcement, and it becomes difficult to isolate the change in mechanical properties due solely to interphase formation. In this study we try to gauge the feasibility of nanoindentation for characterizing epoxy/Cu interphases. We develop a sample preparation method and optimize nanoindentation parameters in an attempt to avoid the restrictions mentioned above. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and finite element analysis are employed as reference techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of our technique. We show the influence of preparation method and nanoindentaion parameters on measurements of interphase properties and how they relate the mentioned challenges.
Emergency response units increasingly use pressure cylinders made from fibre composites for breathing air as elements of personal protective equipment (PPE). Such applications expose the composite cylinders to harsh temperature and handling conditions. At least in Europe, standards have been used for certifying PPE, which are designed and mandatory for the approval of pressure receptacles for the transport of dangerous goods. Therefore, service conditions specific to PPEs are not accounted for in these standards. In this paper, BAM (Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing) investigates the residual safety of a composite cylinder design at the end of their designated service life of 15 years. The cylinders (test pressure PH 450 bars; 6.8 Litres) are of one design type with aluminium liner and fully wrapped with carbon fibres, which is commonly considered a “Type III” cylinder. All cylinders were used as PPE by the Berlin fire department and randomly picked in three samples of 25 cylinders each before tested.
At BAM, the cylinder samples underwent hydraulic load cycle tests (LCT), conventional burst tests (BT) and so called slow burst tests (SBT). A concept for quantification of strength degradation already introduced by BAM was applied. This concept is based on a probabilistic assessment of the average strength and scatter of each sample of cylinders. The strength distributions of the used PPEcylinders is shown and analysed. Some unexpected effects are shown and a refinement of the statistical assessment is introduced.
