Adhesion and corrosive delamination of epoxy films on chemically etched ZnMgAl-alloy coatings
(2016)
The effect of alkaline and acidic pretreatment steps on the surface chemical
composition and adhesion properties of ZnMgAl-alloy coated steel was
investigated by means of spectroscopic methods, scanning Kelvin probe (SKP)
and peel test measurements. The spectroscopic results indicate that the surface
film composition can be adjusted by the wet-chemical treatment. To study the
corresponding surface adhesive properties, the samples were coated with an
epoxy amine adhesive. Peel tests under humid conditions indicated an
increased interaction between the acidic pre-treated surface and the adhesive.
The results of the SKP analysis show that the acidic cleaned substrates have the
highest resistance to delamination, which can be explained by the shift of the
interfacial electrode potential.
Catalysts based on nickel oxide are some of the most active catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media. However, preparing catalytic coatings with high surface area and good accessibility of the active sites remains challenging.
We present a new approach for the synthesis of homogeneous and binder-free nickel oxide coatings comprising a highly accessible ordered mesopore structure. The synthesis is achieved via evaporation induced self assembly utilizing PEOPB-PEO triblock copolymers as pore template and a chemical complex of Ni2+ and citric acid as precursor. Excessive crystallization behaviour of NiO is avoided by thermal conversion of the precursor into an amorphous Ni carbonate intermediate, followed by transition of the carbonate into the metal oxide.
We present a comprehensive analysis of the obtained materials in terms of morphology, crystallinity, surface area, composition, and OER activity of differently calcined catalysts. Retaining a low crystallinity and high surface area during the Synthesis proofs to be the most important factor in obtaining a highly active OER catalyst.
Detection of the electronic structure of iron-(III)-oxo oligomers forming in aqueous solutions
(2017)
The nature of the small iron-oxo oligomers in iron-(III) aqueous solutions has a determining effect on the chemical processes that govern the formation of nanoparticles in aqueous phase. Here we report on a liquid-Jet photoelectron-spectroscopy experiment for the investigation of the electronic structure of the occurring iron-oxo oligomers in FeCl3 aqueous solutions. The only iron species in the as-prepared 0.75 M solution are Fe3+ monomers. Addition of NaOH initiates Fe3+ hydrolysis which is followed by the formation of iron-oxo oligomers. At small enough NaOH concentrations, corresponding to approximately [OH]/[Fe] = 0.2–0.25 ratio, the iron oligomers can be stabilized for several hours without engaging in further aggregation. Here, we apply a combination of non-resonant as well as iron 2p and Oxygen 1s resonant photoelectron spectroscopy from a liquid microjet to detect the electronic structure of the occurring species. Specifically, the oxygen 1s partial electron yield X-ray absorption (PEY-XA) spectra are found to exhibit a peak well below the onset of liquid water and OH (aq) absorption. The iron 2p absorption gives rise to signal centered between the main absorption bands typical for aqueous Fe3+. Absorption bands in both PEY-XA spectra are found to correlate with an enhanced photoelectron Peak near 20 eV binding energy, which demonstrates the sensitivity of resonant photoelectron (RPE) spectroscopy to mixing between iron and ligand orbitals. These various signals from the iron-oxo oligomers exhibit Maximum intensity at [OH]/[Fe] = 0.25 ratio. For the same ratio, we observe changes in the pH as well as in complementary Raman spectra, which can be assigned to the Transition from monomeric to oligomeric species. At approximately [OH]/[Fe] = 0.3 we begin to observe particles larger than 1 nm in radius, detected by small-angle X-ray scattering.
A central challenge to ensure the sustainable production and use of nanotechnologies is to understand and effectively control the risks along the industrial innovation value chain. Knowledge about nanotechnology processes and nanosafety issues (hazards, fate, risk...) is growing rapidly but the effective use of this knowledge for risk management by market actors is lagging behind.
EC4SafeNano (European Centre for Risk Management and Safe Innovation in Nanomaterials and Nanotechnologies) promotes a harmonized vision of expertise in risk assessment and management for the public and private sectors to enable the safe development and commercialization of nanotechnology.
EC4SafeNano is operated together by major European risk institutes with the support of numerous associated partners, gathering all stakeholders involved in Nanomaterials and Nanotechnologies (regulators, industry, society, research, service providers...).
In a case study the surface chemical transformations upon 2 different ageing procedures (long-term UV irradiation or swimming pool water) of a representative set of titanium dioxide nanoparticles has been investigated. The materials have been analyzed by various analytical techniques. Each method addresses different aspects of the complex endpoint surface chemistry. The multi technique approach allows evaluation of the capabilities and limitations of the applied methods regarding their suitability to address the endpoint surface chemistry and their sensitivity to identify even small surface chemical transformations.
Results:
- To obtain a comprehensive picture, it is insufficient to concentrate on a single analysis technique.
- By using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) in combination with principal component analysis (PCA) it was possible to identify even subtle changes in the surface chemistry of the investigated materials.
- A general trend that was observed for the UV-aged samples is the decrease of organic material on the nanomaterial surface.

Low temperature functionalization of two-dimensional boron nitride for electrochemical sensing
(2019)
Two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride(h-BN)as an emerging nanomaterial exhibits uniquephysicochemical properties, making it suitable candidate for a wide spectrum of applications. However, due to its poor functionality, the processability of this nanomaterial is low. In this work, wereport on a straightforward and scalable approach for the functionalization of h-BN by nitrene[2+1]cycloaddition at room temperature. The triazine-functionalized h-BN(Trz-BNs)showed ahigh reactivity toward nucleophiles, through which post-modifications are performable. The post-modification of Trz-BNs by L-cysteine was studied using cyclic voltammetry and differential pulsevoltammetry. Taking advantage of the scalable and straightforward functionalization as well as abilityof triazine functional groups for the controlled post-modifications, Trz-BNs is a promisingnanoplatform for a wide range of future applications.
A new method for top‐down, one‐pot, gram‐scale production of high quality nanographene by incubating graphite in a dilute sodium hypochlorite solution at only 40 °C is reported here. The produced sheets have only 4 at% oxygen content, comparable with nanographene grown by chemical vapor deposition. The nanographene sheets are covalently functionalized using a nondestructive nitrene [2+1] cycloaddition reaction that preserves their π‐conjugated system. Statistical analyses of Raman spectroscopy and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicate a low number of sp3 carbon atoms on the order of 2% before and 4% after covalent functionalization. The nanographene sheets are significantly more conductive than conventionally prepared nanographene oxide, and conductivity further increases after covalent functionalization. The observed doping effects and theoretical studies suggest sp2 hybridization for the carbon atoms involved in the [2+1] cycloaddition reaction leading to preservation of the π‐conjugated system and enhancing conductivity via n‐type doping through the bridging N‐atom. These methods are easily scalable, which opens the door to a mild and efficient process to produce high quality nanographenes and covalently functionalize them while retaining or improving their physicochemical properties.
The structural and thermoelectric properties of Na- and Ag-substituted CoO dense ceramics have been investigated. X-ray diffraction shows that pure phase and Ag/CoO composites have been obtained for Na-doped and Ag-doped CoO, respectively. Raman spectroscopy shows an effect of Na dopants on the lattice disorder of CoO. The chemical composition, element distribution, and valence states of the samples have been characterized by Auger electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Substitution of Co by 5 at. % Na enhances the power factor to 250 μWm−1 K-2 at 1000 K, similar to that of Ca3Co4O9. The corresponding thermal conductivity is also reduced to 3.55 W.m−1 K−1 at 1000 K. Consequently, Co0.95Na0.05O exhibits the best thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT), which is 0.07 at 1000 K. On the other hand, the substitution of Ag into CoO leads to the formation of CoO/Ag composites and deteriorates ZT values.
Most real core-shell nanoparticle (CSNP) samples deviate from an ideal core-shell structure potentially having significant impact on the particle properties. An ideal structure displays a spherical core fully encapsulated by a shell of homogeneous thickness, and all particles in the sample exhibit the same shell thickness. Therefore,
analytical techniques are required that can identify and characterize such deviations.
This study demonstrates that by analysis of the inelastic background in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) survey spectra, the following types of deviations can be identified and quantified: the nonuniformity of the shell thickness within a nanoparticle sample and the incomplete encapsulation of the cores by the shell material. Furthermore, CSNP shell thicknesses and relative coverages can be obtained. These results allow for a quick and straightforward comparison between several batches of a specific CSNP, different coating approaches, and so forth. The presented XPS methodology requires a submonolayer distribution of CSNPs on a substrate.
Poly(tetrafluoroethylene)-poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(tetrafluoroethylene)-polystyrene polymer CSNPs serve as model systems to demonstrate the applicability of the approach.
Metal-Assisted and Solvent-Mediated Synthesis of Two-Dimensional Triazine Structures on Gram Scale
(2020)
Covalent triazine frameworks are an emerging material class that have shown promising performance for a range of applications. In this work, we report on a metal-assisted and solvent-mediated reaction between calcium carbide and cyanuric chloride, as cheap and commercially available precursors, to synthesize two-dimensional triazine structures (2DTSs). The reaction between the solvent, dimethylformamide, and cyanuric chloride was promoted by calcium carbide and resulted in dimethylamino-s-triazine intermediates, which in turn undergo nucleophilic substitutions. This reaction was directed into two dimensions by calcium ions derived from calcium carbide and induced the formation of 2DTSs. The role of calcium ions to direct the two-dimensionality of the final structure was simulated using DFT and further proven by synthesizing molecular intermediates. The water content of the reaction medium was found to be a crucial factor that affected the structure of the products dramatically. While 2DTSs were obtained under anhydrous conditions, a mixture of graphitic material/2DTSs or only graphitic material (GM) was obtained in aqueous solutions. Due to the straightforward and gram-scale synthesis of 2DTSs, as well as their photothermal and photodynamic properties, they are promising materials for a wide range of future applications, including bacteria and virus incapacitation.
