In this work, the structural integrity of LBM fabricated IN625 small cylinders (d = 1 mm, h = 6 mm) was investigated regarding the porosity and the surface roughness by means of computed tomography. The measurements were carried out on a GE v|tome|x L 300/180 with a reconstructed voxel size of 2 µm. The pores were analyzed for size, shape and spatial distribution. The correlation between compactness C and spatial distribution showed that elongated pores (C < 0.2) appear exclusively within a distance of 80 µm to the sample surface. The reconstructed surface was digitally meshed and unwrapped to evaluate the mean roughness Ra. Since the gravity correlates linearly with the sine of the build angle, the influence of gravity on porosity and surface roughness was determined.
µCT is used to validate the capability of online monitoring for in-situ detection of defects during the L-PBF build process, which is a focus of the TF project ProMoAM.
Our first experiments show that online monitoring using thermography and optical tomography cameras are able to detect defects in the built part. But further research is needed to understand root cause of the correlation.
Zirconium chloro fluoride as catalyst for C-F bond activation and HF transfer of fluoroalkanes
(2024)
In this work1, we have successfully synthesised amorphous zirconium chloro fluoride (ZCF), which exhibits medium lewis acidity. In addition to investigating the local coordination sphere around the Zr atoms and the material properties, we were able to establish a catalytic behavior of ZCF in C-F bond activation reactions. We present the first heterogeneous catalyst that performs dehydrofluorination of a fluoroalkane and consecutive hydrofluorination of an alkyne at room temperature.

Nowadays, people spend most of their time indoors. Thus, a good indoor air quality is important. Emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from furniture and building materials can cause health complaints1. Quantitative VOC-emission testing is carried out under standardized conditions in emission test chambers. In the presented project an emission reference material (ERM) is developed that emits a defined mixture of VOCs which is required for quality assurance and -control (QA/QC) measures. Porous materials (e.g zeolites, activated carbons, MOFs or aerogels) are used as reservoir materials and impregnated with VOC. The porous materials are selected, among others, by their pore size, pore size distribution, polarity and availability. Due to their regular pore structure zeolites are tested at first. For a prediction of the emission profile, the ERM is supposed to exhibit a constant emission rate over time. The aim is a stability of ≤ 10 % change in the emission rate over a minimum of 14 days.
Method
For impregnation, the material is placed into an autoclave inside a rotatable basket. The VOC is added and the autoclave is closed. Afterwards, CO2 is inserted. The closed system is then heated to the supercritical point of CO2 (31 °C, 73.75 bar). In this state, the CO2 acts as solvent for the VOC. By rotating the basket, the distribution of the VOC is ensured. After a few minutes, the pressure is decreased slowly and the CO2 is released. For the determination of the emission profile, the impregnated sample is placed into an emission test chamber. These chambers can be operated either with dry or humid air (50 ± 5 % rel. humidity). Every second to third day, air samples are taken and analyzed by gas chromatography. For an ideal impregnation, several different pressures and temperatures as well as impregnation times are tested.
Results
Two zeolite materials tested in dry air conditions reach emission profiles with a decrease of less than 10 % over 14 days (heptane and toluene, respectively). Further it was discovered that smaller pellets of the same zeolite show better results than bigger particles. When the pore size of a zeolite is too small, e.g. 0.3 nm, the VOC cannot be absorbed sufficiently. The main disadvantage of zeolites is their hygroscopicity because it has a large impact on the release of VOC when they are used in emission test chambers under standardized test conditions (23 °C, 50 % rel. humidity). Activated carbons have emission profiles with a larger change over 14 days. However, the high hydrophobicity allows measurements in humid air conditions which was not possible with the before mentioned hygroscopic zeolites. It is possible to impregnate powdered materials as well, and thus powdered non-hygroscopic (n.h.) zeolites were impregnated. Their emission profiles are comparable to those of the activated carbons. The use of methylated hygroscopic zeolites with a decrease in hygroscopicity did not yield successful emission measurements. The change over 14 days is calculated only for the stable phase (~250–300 h).
The desired stability of ≤ 10 % change of the emission rate over 14 days could already be reached under dry testing conditions. Further investigations under humid conditions show that zeolites with high Si/Al-ratios are non-hygroscopic and comparable to activated carbons (20–30 % change). The next step is to reduce the change in the emission rate of these materials to the aimed ≤ 10 % over 14 days.
Fibre-Matrix-Debonding in glass fibre reinforced dental posts can play an important role for their mechanical performance and long term stability… We show that synchrotron X-ray refraction radiography (SXRR) allows analysis of large samples (up to several millimetres) without compromising the detectability of sub micrometer defects.
X-ray refraction techniques represent a very promising, yet not so wide-spread, set of X-ray techniques
based on refraction effects. They allow determining internal specific surface (surface per unit volume) in a non-destructive fashion, position and orientation sensitive, and with nanometric detectability. While they are limited by the X-ray absorption of the material under investigation, we demonstrate showcases of ceramics and composite materials, where understanding of microstructural features could be achieved in a way unrivalled even by high-resolution techniques such as electron microscopy or computed tomography.

Alkaline earth metal fluoride nanoparticles have been investigated for application in wood protection. Sols of MgF2 and CaF2 were synthesized and their efficacy was tested against fungi and termites (Rehmer 2016, Krahl et al. 2016). The sols were characterized by XRD and SEM. The wood specimens were vacuum impregnated with nanoparticles and then exposed to fungi and termites according to EU certified test conditions. Our results show that wood impregnated with metal fluoride nanoparticles significantly reduce cellulose hydrolysis by fungi and termites. The wood samples were exposed to brown-rot fungi; Coniophora puteana and Poria placenta. Between the two fungi, the overall mass lost due to fungal degradation was lower for treated (MgF2 and CaF2) wood samples exposed to Coniophora puteana. Thus, the metal fluoride nanoparticles impregnated in the wood samples were more efficient in reducing cellulose degradation from Coniophora puteana than from Poria placenta. However the mass loss in samples treated with MgF2 was similar to those treated with CaF2, irrespective of type of fungi. Therefore, it is likely that fungal degradation in treated samples was dependent on the biocidal action of fluorides rather than on the differences in chemical and physical properties of MgF2 and CaF2, respectively. Conversely, for termite exposure, wood samples treated with MgF2 had lower cellulose degradation compared to those treated with CaF2. A possible explanation for this difference in results could be fungi and termites use separate mechanisms for cellulose hydrolysis which will be further investigated. Future experiments include testing the leaching potential of MgF2 and CaF2 nanoparticles from wood. The results from the leaching experiment will test if metal fluoride nanoparticles can provide long-term and environmentally safe protection to wood.
Silicon surface passivation with atomic layer deposited (ALD) thin films has gained more and more interest in the PV community in recent years. With ALD good film quality, accurate thickness control and conformity are reached. Furthermore, ALD is capable of coating difficult substrates such as nanostructured surfaces with the same accuracy as flat surfaces. A variety of materials such as Al2O3, TiO2 and HfO2 demonstrate good surface passivation quality both for front and rear surface of silicon solar cells. In addition of providing good surface passivation, thin films with high refractive index e.g. HfO2, TiO2 and AlN can act simultaneously as antireflection coatings when applied on the front surface of the device. Hence, ALD thin films can reduce both electrical and reflective losses in solar cells.
Thorough investigation of the optical properties of these layers is crucial for several reasons related to their production and use. Optical measurements provide a fast, easy, non-destructive, and in situ capable approach to quality assurance for photovoltaic devices. As the function of the final device is optical, optimisation of the device performance relies strongly on the knowledge of the wide-range dielectric function of the thin layers. In this contribution, we determined the optical constants of ALD generated layers of AlN, Al2O3, TiO2, and HfO2 in a wide spectral range covering the near ultraviolet and the mid-infrared regions by means of spectroscopic ellipsometry. By combining data from a UV-Vis-NIR ellipsometer (Woollam M2000DI) and an FTIR ellipsometer (Sentech Sendira), we can determine the optical constants alongside with the layer thicknesses from one large set of spectroscopic measurements. We consider this a contribution to the metrological treatment of stratified and structured thin films in the optical range by polarisation-sensitive measurement methods.
Ferritic alloys containing Cr form Cr5S6 precipitates along grain boundaries in hot SO2 environment. Grain boundary precipitates may influence the steel’s mechanical behavior. Cr5S6 precipitates were reconstructed three-dimensionally using FIB tomography analysis to determine the volume, number, and penetration depth. The volume growth of Cr5S6 precipitates increased only for the initial aging time of 3 h but became constant after 6 h. The number of precipitates increased linearly.
The WelDX research project aims to foster the exchange of scientific data inside the welding community by developing and establishing a new open source file format suitable for documentation of experimental welding data and upholding associated quality standards. In addition to fostering scientific collaboration inside the national and international welding community an associated advisory committee will be established to oversee the future development of the file format. The proposed file format will be developed with regards to current needs of the community regarding interoperability, data quality and performance and will be published under an appropriate open source license.
By using the file format objectivity, comparability and reproducibility across different institutes and experimental setups can be improved.
Wear behavior of innovative niobium carbide cutting tools in ultrasonic-assisted finishing milling
(2023)
The resources of niobium exceed the ones of tungsten by an order of magnitude. With 92%, Brazil is today the main global producer of niobium. Hence, niobium carbides (NbC) are a sustainable and economic alternative to conventionally used cutting materials, especially tungsten carbides (WC). Moreover, NbC can be used in Ni alloy matrix and thus offer significant advantages by substituting WC in Co matrix as cutting materials in terms of health risks and raw material price and supply risk. Based on recent studies which found an increased performance of NbC compared to WC cutting tools in machining higher strength steels, the composition NbC12Ni4Mo4VC was chosen for finish machining of a high-strength steel S960QL in this study. The experiments were carried out on an ultrasonic-assisted 5-axis milling machine using NbC tools specially made to benchmark them with commercially available coated WC cutting inserts. In addition, the influence of a coating system for the NbC inserts is tested and evaluated for its performance in the cutting process. Tool wear and cutting force analyses are implied to identify optimal parameter combinations as well as tool properties for the novel NbC tool. Together with the oscillation of ultrasonic-assisted milling, the loads on the component surface and the tool can be reduced and the wear behavior of the novel NbC tool can be refined. These milling tests are accompanied by standardized wear tests, i.e., pin-on-disc, between the aforementioned material combinations, and the results are correlated with each other. Finally, the behavior when using hard-to-cut materials such as Ni alloys, or innovative materials such as iron aluminide is also being tested, as these are constantly in the focus of machining optimization. With this strategy, comprehensive knowledge is achievable for future efficient application of NbC for milling tools, which have already been researched for decades using WC.
Water as side effect of reinforcing boehmite filler Local changes in anhydride cured epoxy resin
(2019)
Nanocomposites offer wide opportunities for lightweight constructions and enable reduction of weight and volume. Beside macroscopic toughening nanoparticle reinforced polymers show a soft interface around boehmite (AlOOH) filler nanoparticles. A related strong interaction between boehmite and the anhydride cured resin system is widely suspected in literature but not determined by structural Analysis. Determination of the molecular structure is important to allow simulations approaching the real system and predict future reinforcing effects.
DRIFT (diffuse refletance infrared fourier transformed) spectra of the boehmite reinforced anhydride cured epoxy show significant changes in the molecular structure compared to the neat polymer. Further investigations of the interactions between the single components of the resin system and the boehmite filler pointed out reactions between released water released from the boehmite filler and the anhydride hardener or amine accelerator. This leads to the discussion of competing polymerisation mechanisms that highly influence the polymer properties. Ongoing experiments and literature research approve that this impact of water is able to locally change the stoichiometrie, alter the curing mechanism or support an inhomogeneous crosslink density.
The KorroPad indicator test was invented at the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing to detect stainless-steel surfaces susceptible to pitting corrosion. The KorroPad indicator test is thus an interesting alternative for manufacturers, processors, users and researchers to time consuming exposition experiments and complex electrochemical investigations, which are normally used to reveal surface-related processing errors resulting in reduced pitting corrosion resistance. Furthermore, the KorroPad indicator test can be used to visualize alloy- and microstructure-related factors causing susceptibility to pitting corrosion. The detection limit of the KorroPad indicator test was characterized in this work using reference alloys with different chromium content (5 % to 18 %). The alloy-specific detection limit was shifted successfully to higher chromium content by increasing the concentrations of NaCl and K3[Fe(CN)6]. The modified KorroPads can now be used to establish an alloy-specific quality control regarding the pitting corrosion resistance of different stainless steel grades.
Luminescent lanthanides(III) offer exceptional optical properties that can overcome issues often encountered with other fluorophores (e.g. organic dyes). Their long lifetimes up to milliseconds, low photobleaching and sharp and characteristic emission peaks make the lanthanides extremely valuable for the development of advanced luminescent materials. Previous work on Ru(II) and Ir(III) gold surfaces further highlights the potential of employing the luminescence of metal complexes for the fabrication of sensing platforms and devices.
Here, we incorporate visible and NIR-emitting lanthanide(III) complexes Ln2L3 (Ln = Eu(III), Nd(III), Yb(III)) to gold and plasmonic surfaces, translating the unique optical properties of the lanthanides(III) to practical devices. The Ln2L3 complexes are deposited on the surfaces with different methods, ranging from polymer aided physisorption to the covalent attachment on the gold surface. Furthermore, we exploit the high sensitivity to the coordination environment of lanthanides(III) to design and prepare a sensing platform.
Virtual-lab-based determination of a macroscopic yield function for additively manufactured parts
(2019)
This work aims for a yield function description of additively manufactured parts of S316L steel at the continuum-mechanical macro-scale by means of so-called virtual experiments using a crystal plasticity (CP) model at meso-scale. Additively manufactured parts require the consideration of the specific process-related microstructure, which prevents this material to be macroscopically treated as isotropic, because of crystallographic as well as topological textures. From virtual experiments, yield loci under various loading conditions are simulated. The scale bridging from meso- to macro-scale is realised by the identification of the simulated yield loci as a modified anisotropic Barlat-type yield model representation.
Vibrational properties play a key role in determining the stability and thermal conductivity behaviour of materials. The quasi- harmonic approximation gives insight into the phononic properties of a compound, but in the established way, i.e. density functional theory based methods, it takes many calculation steps and consumes a lot of resources to arrive at the desired results. Machine learning (ML) trained interatomic potentials (e.g. Gaussian approximation potential, GAP) pose an alternative to the traditional computation way of phonons. We develop a Python code based workflow which combines automation tools like atomate2 with ML to ease providing interactomic potentials for (quantum chemical) computations and databases.

Spray drying based granulation processes aim for flowable granules neither containing voids nor hard shells thus leading to a homogenous microstructure in the green and sinter bodies without strength reducing large pores. The increase of the specific surface area due to the utilization of finer powders as raw materials makes the production of granules of demanded quality more sophisticated. Innovations regarding additives as well as process engineering are therefore required.
While conventional spray granulation processes of ceramic materials are based on rotational, one stream or two stream nozzles for nebulization, the investigations in the ZIM project concentrate on the applicability of an ultra sound atomizer unit. A spray dryer comprised of the aforementioned ultra sound atomization unit implemented in a commercial spray dryer (Niro, Denmark) was used as test system. Potential advantages of the ultra sound nebulization are investigated for model systems of alumina, zirconia and a ZTA composite while focusing on solids content, yield, pressability and granule properties (size, size distribution, flowability, shape and microstructure) as well as the final sinter body properties (density, microstructure and flexural strength).
First ultra sound spray drying experiments yielded granules with excellent processability. Spray drying of identical slurries, as before tested and optimized for a two stream nozzle atomization process, resulted in a more suitable size distribution for dry pressing (less particles below 20 µm) and a higher yield. Furthermore, sinter bodies produced of ultra sound granules seem to have less large pores and a more homogenous microstructure
Use of the solvent-free mechanochemical method for a sustainable preparation of pharmaceuticals
(2023)
With the growing interest in environmental issues on the part of governments and institutions, pharmaceutical industries are asked to reduce their environmental footprint. Given the major impact related to the use of solvents, the development of methodologies less solvent demanding is nowadays even more urgent. In light of that, mechanochemistry would be a suitable solvent-free technology since it promotes the activation of the chemical reactions between (generally) solid materials via inputs of mechanical energy. Since such reactions may occur outside the kinetic and thermodynamic rules of conventional solution chemistry, the main limit of mechanochemistry is the poor mechanistic understanding of the solid-state transformations involved, which is still hindering a widespread use of the method, as well a scale-up to the industrial level. However, the development of methods for real-time monitoring of the mechanochemical reactions enables obtaining (in)accessible information on reaction intermediates, new products, or reaction time, thus getting closer to a better understanding of the mechanistic behaviour. With the rules of this chemistry becoming increasingly clear, the new reaction pathways of mechanochemistry wouldn’t represent a limit anymore, but an asset, that may lead to lot of opportunities for the pharmaceutical industry.
Modern municipal solid waste incinerator plants produce bottom ashes, which are used in building industry, especially as base course in road constructions. Because of a highly sophisticated reprocessing technique, the ashes Show a relatively stable composition, comparatively well defined properties and environmentally relevant Parameters below legal Limits. Due to its chemical and mineralogical characteristics, the bottom ash can in principle be used as Aggregate in the production of normal strength concrete. However, if the ash contains concrete damaging components Recycling becomes problematic.
To assess the use of municipal solid waste incinerator bottom ash (MSWI bottom ash) as Aggregate in concrete, different additionally treated ashes were chemical and physical characterised. Furthermore, concrete specimens with bottom ash as aggregates were produced and their Engineering properties were studied.
UCST-type thermoresponsive polymers (i.e. that phase separate from solution upon cooling) present a tremendous potential not only in aqueous media with applications in the field of drug delivery, diagnostic and microfluidic applications, but also in water/alcohol mixtures, where they can be used for instance in sensing systems for alcohol-soluble drugs. However, only a few thermoresponsive polymers have been reported that present an UCST in a relevant temperature range and “green” solvents such as water or ethanol.
In this context, acrylamide-based monomers can be very useful building blocks for designing novel non-ionic UCST-type polymers because of their hydrophilic nature (with the appropriate side chain) and propensity to form hydrogen bonds. We will present our latest results on the UCST-type thermoresponsive behaviour of acrylamide- and/or 2,6-diaminopyridine-based homopolymers and copolymers in water or water/alcohol mixtures, and give some insights about the rational design of UCST polymers relying on H-bonding.

In this context, acrylamide-based monomers can be very useful building blocks for designing novel UCST-type polymers because of their hydrophilic nature (with the right side chain) and propensity to form hydrogen bonds.
We want to present our latest results on the copolymer poly(acrylamide-co-acrylonitrile) (P(AAm-co-AN)) that present a UCST in water as well as on two homopolymers based on an acrylamide derivative of 2,6-diaminopyridine, namely poly(N-(6-aminopyridin-2-yl)acrylamide) (PNAPAAm) and poly(N-(6-acetamidopyridin-2-yl)acrylamide) (PNAcAPAAm) that show UCST-type thermoresponsiveness in water/alcohol mixtures.
Our focus for P(AAm-co-AN)) is its aggregation behaviour above and below its phase transition temperature as the size of thermoresponsive polymeric systems is of prime importance for biomedical applications (as size dependent processes take place in the body) and is linked to the optical properties of a material that matter in materials science.
In the case of PNAPAAm and PNAcAPAAm, we focused on the co-solvency/co-non solvency effect on the phase transition temperature in water/alcohol mixture. Indeed, polymers with UCST behavior below 60°C in water/alcohol mixtures are extremely promising for the preparation of “smart” materials for sensing.

High entropy alloys (HEAs) are considered as a new class of alloys containing at least 5 elements with concentrations between 5 and 35 atomic percent. There has been a growing interest in HEAs in the material research field in recent years. Due to their adjustable composition, which enables the modifications of mechanical properties (such as hardness, strength and ductility etc) and their stability at high temperatures, HEAs have been the focus of various studies.
Especially the corrosion behavior of HEAs has been a wide research interest. Since the grazing exit X-ray fluorescence (GEXRF) offers a non-destructive way to collect notable information regarding the high temperature oxidation, we consider it as a useful method to investigate how HEAs behave in corrosive environments.
The main idea of grazing geometry is to enhance the fluorescence signal of the surface. This enables highly sensitive surface analyses of thin protective film on surface in sub-micrometer scale. Position-sensitive area detectors provide information regarding the signal emitted from the sample as a function of emission angle and thus allow depth-sensitive analysis. Furthermore, the data collected from samples of an incidence energy which lays within a specific energy range provides XANES data to determine oxidation states. Moreover, since GEXRF profiles can also be simulated through physical models (Urbach 1999), they enable us to determine the layer thickness of a given sample in a non-destructive way.
In this contribution, we present the preliminary results of a conceptual study regarding layer properties of CrCoNi medium entropy alloy. The successful implementation of such methodological concept will pave the way for the investigation of more complex alloys with multiple layers, which is planned for the later phases of the project.
An understanding on crystallization behavior and kinetics in glasses is one of the important topics in the glass science and technology. Tsukada et al.1) found an extremely unique and curious phenomenon in the crystallization of multiferroic (ferroelectric and ferroelastic properties) ’-Gd2(MoO4)3 crystals in Gd2O3-MoO3-B2O3 glasses. That is, crystals formed in the crystallization break into small pieces with a triangle prism or pyramidal shape having a length of 50-150 um spontaneously during the crystallization in the inside of an electric furnace, not during the cooling in air after the crystallization. They proposed to call this phenomenon “self-powdering phenomenon”. To the best of our knowledge, such a self-powdering phenomenon has not been observed in the crystallization of any other glasses. To investigate this phenomenon is very important for the glass science and for the preparation of bulk crystallized glasses with ferroelastic crystals. In this work, the preparation of crystallized glasses keeping the original shape is challenged, and the mechanism of self-powdering phenomenon is proposed. Glasses with the compositions of 21Gd2O3-63MoO3-(16-x)B2O3-xTeO2 (mol%) (x=0, 2, 4, 8) such as 21Gd2O3-63MoO3-16B2O3 (GM16B) and 21Gd2O3-63MoO3-8B2O3-8TeO2 (GM8T8B) were prepared using a conventional melt quenching technique. The quenched glasses were heat-treated at some temperatures, and the crystalline phase present in the crystallized samples was identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses, and the morphology and birefringence of crystals formed were observed using a polarized optical microscope (POM). The densities of GM16B and GM8T8B glasses are 4.76 g/cm3 and 4.91 g/cam3, respectively, and these values are higher than the density of ’-Gd2(MoO4)3 crystal, 4.555 g/cm3. These differences in the density might induce the large stresses in the inside of crystals during the crystal growth. The crystallized glasses of GM16B with ’-Gd2(MoO4)3 crystals do not keep the original glass shape, showing self-powdering phenomenon (breaking into small pieces). However, the crystallized glasses of GM8T8B keep the original glass shape without indicating any self-powdering. It is proposed that the stress at the interface between the glassy phase and ’-Gd2(MoO4)3 crystalline phase might be reduced in GM8T8B glasses containing TeO2 with weak Te-O bonds.
Non-linear optical emitters are promising materials for energy applications and biotechnologies. Solid-state multi-band emitters like lanthanide doped up-conversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) show excellent photostability, are excitable in the near infrared (NIR), and show emission bands from the UV to SWIR spectral regions. The optical properties of these materials strongly depend on the excitation power density, i.e., the number of photons absorbed per time interval. The upconversion (ΦUC) and downshifting quantum efficiencies (ΦDS) of these materials, the excitation power dependent population, and the deactivation dynamics are influenced by nanoparticle architecture, doping concentration, and the microenvironment. We studied the fundamental changes of the luminescence properties of ß-NaYF4 UCNPs doped with Yb3+ and Er3+ depending on size, different surroundings such as aqueous and organic media, and different surface chemistries. We obtained further insights into shelling procedures, FRET optimization, influence of doping concentration, and advantages of different sensitizer ions.
Crystalline molecular materials are usually brittle and are prone to break into pieces upon external mechanical force. This fragility poses challenges for their application in next-generation technologies, including sensors, synthetic tissues, and advanced opto-electronics. The recent discovery of mechanical flexibility in single crystals of molecular materials has solved this issue and enable the design of smart flexible device technologies. Plastic crystals can be deformed permanently. This behavior is based on anisotropic molecular arrangements and the existence of facile slip planes which allow a permanent motion within the lattice. In contrast, elastic crystals can be deformed, but regain the original structure when the force is removed. This phenomenon is related to energetically isotropic molecular packing. Here we report 4-bromo-6-[(6-chlorolpyridin-2-ylimino)methyl]phenol (BCMPMP) as a promising candidate for future waveguide technologies. It turns out that BCMPMP has two different polymorphs with distinct optical and mechanical properties. Form I crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pca21 and shows brittle behavior. This structure exhibit very weak emission at 605 nm (λex = 425 nm) together with a low fluorescence quantum yield (Φ = 0.4 %). On the other hand, form II (monoclinic space group P21/c) has a large plastic regime and a bright emission at 585 nm (λex = 425 nm; Φ = 8.7 %). Based on its improved mechanical and optical properties, form II was explored as a bendable optical waveguide. Light was successfully propagated through a straight-shaped and mechanically deformed BCMPMP crystal. Depending on the light source, active or passive waveguiding could be achieved. So BCMPMP can also be used as a flexible wavelength filter.
