In this study, the thermomechanical damage behavior of a glass fiber reinforced polymer material is investigated. The coefficients of thermal expansion of the composite as well as the matrix are measured in a wide temperature range. Quasi-static experiments with neat resin, unidirectional and multidirectional laminates are performed as well as fatigue experiments in a temperature range from 213 K to 343 K. This study focusses on the matrix damage due to fiber-parallel loading. A correlation between matrix effort, the dilatational strain energy of the matrix and the damage state of the specimen is demonstrated. It is shown that a fatigue life assessment can be performed with the aid of a temperature-independent master fatigue curve.
Magnetocaloric composite wires have been studied by pulsed-field measurements up to μ0ΔH = 10 T with a typical rise time of 13 ms in order to evaluate the evolution of the adiabatic temperature change of the core, ΔTad, and to determine the effective temperature change at the surrounding steel jacket, ΔTeff, during the field pulse. An inverse thermal hysteresis is observed for ΔTad due to the delayed thermal transfer. By numerical simulations of application-relevant sinusoidal magnetic field profiles, it can be stated that for field-frequencies of up to two field cycles per second heat can be efficiently transferred from the core to the outside of the jacket. In addition, intense numerical simulations of the temperature change of the core and jacket were performed by varying different parameters, such as frequency, heat capacity, thermal conductivity and interface resistance in order to shed light on their impact on ΔTeff at the outside of the jacket in comparison to ΔTad provided by the core.
The thermoelectric properties of Sr1-xBixTiO3-δ (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.07) have been investigated. Dense ceramics of Sr1-xBixTiO3-δ and Sr0.95TiO3-δ have been prepared by solid-state reaction and conventional sintering in air followed by annealing in a reducing atmosphere. XRD and SEM analyses show that the rutile TiO2 in Sr0.95TiO3 formed after sintering becomes Magnéli phase of TinO2n-1 after annealing. Moreover, Bi resolves from Sr1-xBixTiO3 after annealing, resulting in the formation of Sr1-xBixTiO3-δ/Bi/TinO2n-1 composites. With increasing Bi content in Sr1-xBixTiO3-δ, the electrical conductivity increases while the absolute values of the Seebeck coefficient decrease as a result of increasing carrier concentration. The thermal conductivity of SrTiO3-δ is reduced by doping Bi up to x = 0.07. Highest ZT ~ 0.13 is obtained in Sr0.93Bi0.07TiO3-δ at 1000 K.
Hydrogen is an attractive energy carrier that requires high effort for safe storage. For ensuring safety they have to undergo a challenging approval process. Relevant standards and regulations for composite cylinders used for the transport of for on-board storage of hydrogen are currently based on deterministic (e.g. ISO 11119-3) or semi-probabilistic (UN GTR No. 13) criteria. This paper analysis the properties of such methods in regards to the evaluation of load cycle strength. Their characteristics are compared with the probabilistic approach of the BAM. Based on Monte-Carlo simulations, the available design range (mean value and scatter of strength criteria) of current concepts were exemplarily estimated. The aspect of small sample sizes is analysed and discussed with respect to the evaluation procedures.
Applications of fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) composites in modern industries are increasing due to their considerable advantages such as light weight and excellent mechanical properties. Accordingly, importance of operational safety of modern structures made of advanced composites by ensuring the material quality has led to increasing demands for development of non-destructive evaluation (NDE) systems. In the context of a European project entitled “Validated Inspection Techniques for Composites in Energy Applications” (VITCEA), the aim is to develop and validate traceable procedures for novel NDE techniques with contrasting damage detection capabilities in energy related applications such as wind and marine turbine blades, nacelles, oil and gas flexible risers. Accordingly, VITCEA focuses on optimization of ultrasonic tests (UTs) for quantitative defect detection and quality characterization of FRP structures. In this context, the present study describes the ultrasound field in heterogeneous composite materials. The theoretical predictions are compared with simulation results obtained from CIVA a software package dedicated to NDT simulations based on the asymptotic ray theory.
