We present a handheld fiber-coupled terahertz spectrometer operating at a center wavelength of 1550 nm. The key elements are a fs-fiber laser, a fiber stretcher delay line and fiber-coupled antennas, which contain novel InAlAs-InGaAs multi layer chips. First experimental data obtained with this system demonstrates its great potential and robustness. In addition, we investigate different hazardous and harmless liquids in reflection geometry. These experiments show that liquids are in principle distinguishable by terahertz spectroscopy. Finally, first steps towards an algorithm that allows for an extraction of the liquids dielectric properties are discussed. The algorithm works for the analysis of reflection data even if the liquid is located inside a container.
A thorough characterization of base materials is the prereq- uisite for further research. In this paper, the characterization data of the reference materials (CEM I 42.5 R, limestone pow- der, calcined clay and a mixture of these three components) used in the second funding phase of the priority program 2005 of the German Research Foundation (DFG SPP 2005) are presented under the aspects of chemical and min- eralogical composition as well as physical and chemical properties. The data were collected based on tests performed by up to eleven research groups involved in this cooperative program.
Two types of cements were selected as the reference cement in the priority program 2005 of the German Research Foundation (DFG SPP 2005). A thorough characterization of CEM I 42.5 R has been made in a recent publication. In this paper, the characterization data of the other reference cement CEM III/A 42.5 N are presented from the aspects of chemical and mineralogical compositions as well as physical and chemical properties. The characterization data of the slag, which is the second main constituent of this specific cement besides the clinker, are presented independently. For all data received, the mean values and the corresponding errors were calculated. The data shall be used for the ongoing research within the priority program. Also, researchers from outside this priority program can benefit from these data if the same materials are used.
A thorough characterization of starting materials is the precondition for further research, especially for cement, which contains various phases and presents quite a complex material for fundamental scientific investigation. In the paper at hand, the characterization data of the reference cement CEM I 42.5 R used within the priority program 2005 of the German Research Foundation (DFG SPP 2005) are presented from the aspects of chemical and mineralogical compositions as well as physical and chemical properties. The data were collected based on tests conducted by nine research groups involved in this cooperative program. For all data received, the mean values and the corresponding errors were calculated. The results shall be used for the ongoing research within the priority program.
CsCoO2, featuring a two-dimensional layered architecture of edge- and vertex-linked CoO4tetrahedra, is subjected to a temperature-driven reversible second-order phase transformation at 100 K, which corresponds to a structuralrelaxation with concurrent tilting and breathing modes of edge-sharing CoO4tetrahedra. In the present investigation, it was found that pressure induces a phase transition, which encompasses a dramatic change in the connectivity ofthe tetrahedra. At 923 K and 2 GPa, beta-CsCoO2 undergoes a first-order phasetransition to a new quenchable high-pressure polymorph,alpha-CsCoO2. It is built up of a three-dimensional cristobalite-type network of vertex-sharing CoO4 tetrahedra. According to a Rietveld refinement of high-resolution powderdiffraction data, the new high-pressure polymorph gamma-CsCoO2 crystallizes in the tetragonal space groupI41/amd:2 (Z= 4) with the lattice constants a= 5.8711 (1) and c= 8.3214 (2) A, corresponding to a shrinkage in volume by 5.7% compared with the ambient-temperature and atmospheric pressure-CsCoO2polymorph.The pressure-induced transition (beta>gamma) is reversible;-CsCoO2 stays metastable under ambient conditions, but transforms back to the-CsCoO2structure upon heating to 573 K. The transformation pathway revealed isremarkable in that it is topotactic, as is demonstrated through a clean displacive transformation track between the two phases that employs the symmetry oftheir common subgroupPb21a(alternative setting of space group No. 29 that matches the conventional-phase cell).
