To ensure the safe transport of dangerous goods, the Federal
Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Germany
created a database that delivers specially prepared and
compressed information from relevant German, European and
international regulations and includes an overview about
authorized packaging for each mode of transport for more than
8,000 substances.
In den Gefahrgutvorschriften gibt es keine klaren Regeln für die einheitliche Benennung von Gefahrgütern, die nicht direkt in der Gefahrgutliste genannt sind. Die Verwendung von unterschiedlichen Namen für ein und denselben Stoff erschwert den Informationsfluss. Hinzu kommt, dass viele chemische Benennungen Sonderzeichen (z. B. griechische Buchstaben, Umlaute, etc.) enthalten, die elektronisch oft nicht gut übertragbar sind. Dies kann zu einem erheblichen Fehlerpotenzial bei Gefahrgutunfällen führen. Abhilfe könnte eine Hilfsdatenbank mit einheitlichen und elektronisch gut übertragbaren Benennungen schaffen. -------------------
In the dangerous goods regulations there is no clear rule for the naming of dangerous goods which are not directly registered in the dangerous goods list. The use of different names for the same substances makes communication about these goods difficult. On the other hand, many chemical names include special characters (e.g. Greek letters, umlauts etc.) which are not easily transferable electronically. This results in a potential for substantial error in the case of an incident with dangerous goods. To solve this problem a database is recommended with uniform names which are easily transferable electronically.

Safety risks may ensue when the chemicals contained in polyethylene packagingsa age and damage them. To prevent subsequent accidents, the European Dangerous Goods Regulations have laid down requirements for testing the chemical compatibility of liquid dangerous goods transported in polyethylene packagings. The test procedures include 6 months in which the chemical is prestored in the packaging. After this time, the respective design-type tests are performed. Alternative methods with so-called standard liquids, simulating the different types of damaging effects, are also possible. If a packaging has successfully passed the design type tests with a standard liquid, other dangerous goods may also be transported in this packaging, as long as it is demonstrated that they have a less damaging effect than the standard liquid. However, in this area there is only little information and research available.
A new potentially effective and time-saving method for comparing the stress crack damaging influence of liquids with standard liquids was proposed by a major German chemical company.
The validation of this method, which was carried out on two polyethylene materials, showed the general applicability of the method. Two kinds of wetting solutions were applied to simulate cracking under stress.
The influence of prestorage, test temperatures, wetting agents and material was examined. FEM calculations were carried out to ascertain the influence of the sample shape.
