Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are used to increase the operating temperature of land-, sea-, or air-based turbines. As failure of the coating may result in serious damage of the turbine, reliable estimation of the lifetime is essential. Most experiments to assess the lifetime or to determine parameters for simulations of the behavior of TBCs are done by burner-rig-tests, where the operating conditions are simulated by cyclic heating of the surface and cooling of the backside of a coated sample.
In this work a possibility is presented to do comparable experiments by heating the surface with laser irradiation instead of a burner. For this purpose a Nd:YAG-laser with a maximum output power of 1?kW and a wavelength of 1064?nm is used. The laser spot can be moved by integrated optics across the sample surface to achieve homogeneous heating of the coating. Cooling of the backside is done by air. The temperature of the sample surface is determined by an infrared-camera which also enables the possibility to detect failures in the coating via thermography. Additionally, acoustic sensors attached to the sample holder are used to detect failures in the sample. The investigated ceramic material (yttria stabilized zirconia) has a very low absorption coefficient at the used laser wavelength. Therefore, a pre-treatment of the samples was needed to increase the absorption coefficient to be able to heat up the samples.
In this paper, the experimental setup and first experimental results are presented.
Thermal barrier coatings allow increasing the operating temperature and efficiency of land-, sea-, or air-based turbines. As failure of the coating may result in serious damage of the turbine, reliable estimation of its lifetime is essential. To assess the lifetime, cyclic tests are conceived to combine thermal loading by heating the surface of the coating with laser irradiation and nondestructive methods for damage determination. Using laser irradiation allows a high reproducibility of the thermal load. The temperature of the sample surface during thermal loading is determined by an infrared-camera which also enables the possibility to detect damage in the coating via thermography. Additionally, four acoustic sensors, attached to the experimental setup, are used to detect damage in the sample and determine the source of acoustic events. Results of acoustic emission correlate well with thermographic images that visualize the formation and evolution of damage through delaminations in the samples.
The continuing increase of steam parameters of fossil fuelled high efficiency power plants and new combustion concepts for the capture and storage of carbon dioxide lead to harsher service conditions for the components and structural materials of such facilities. The present work introduces a test concept that allows testing of candidate materials under simultaneous mechanical and corrosive loading. The material's reaction can be directly investigated under simulated temperature, load and corrosion conditions of modern installations. First results obtained for different heat resistant steels suggest a strong influence of the environmental medium on the fatigue and creep behaviour. Such findings complement the data that is available from the classical qualification process of the materials and may support the material selection for new power plant installations.
The KupferDigital project aims to develop digital methods, tools, and data space infrastructures for digitalizing the entire life cycle of copper materials. The mechanical testing process is one of the main chains of such life cycles which generates lots of important testing data about the mechanical properties of the materials and their related materials and testing metadata. To train the digitalization of the mechanical testing process, different kinds of copper alloys were provided for this project, and their mechanical properties were measured by typical methods like Brinell and Vickers hardness and tensile testing. The primary raw testing data as well as the secondary datasets of these tests are provided. The detailed materials specifications, the utilized mechanical testing methods, and provided datasets are described in the content file. The test data files of heterogeneous structures are processed by the KupferDigital digital tools to be converted to standardized machine-readable data files.
The elastic properties (Young's modulus, shear modulus) of Ni-based alloy Inconel IN718 were investigated between room temperature and 800 °C in an additively manufactured variant (laser powder bed fusion, PBF‑LB/M) and from a conventional process route (hot rolled bar). The moduli were determined using the dynamic resonance method. The data set includes information on processing parameters, heat treatments, grain size, specimen dimensions and weight, Young’s and shear modulus as well as their measurement uncertainty.
The dataset was generated in an accredited testing lab using calibrated measuring equipment. The calibrations meet the requirements of the test procedure and are metrologically traceable. The dataset was audited as BAM reference data.

Vergleichende Bewertung verschiedener Verfahren der E-Modulbestimmung für metallische Werkstoffe
(2017)
Experimental and analytical investigation of the TMF-HCF lifetime behavior of two cast iron alloys
(2017)
The combined loading Thermomechanical Fatigue (TMF) with High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) has been experimentally investigated for two cast iron alloys. Both alloys contain globular graphite nodules but the first one has a ferritic structure while the second one has an austenitic crystal structure. In particular, the influences of the HCF frequency, of the HCF loading amplitude and of the location of the superposed HCF cycles have been investigated. It was observed that the HCF frequency has a limited impact on the fatigue life. On the other side, the HCF-strain amplitude has a highly non-linear influence on the fatigue life. The experimental results can be understood in terms of a fracture mechanics based damage mechanism: Cracks quickly initiate due to the TMF loading and the growth of the cracks up to a few mm controls the fatigue life. If HCF-loading cycles are superposed, cyclic crack propagation dramatically accelerates after a threshold has been reached. This threshold is regarded as controlling the fatigue life reduction. The previous ideas have been expressed in a model that can be very simply applied to estimate the fatigue life reduction ratio due to the superposed HCF cycles. It only contains two adjustable parameters and can be combined with any TMF life assessment model.
This article reports temperature-dependent elastic properties (Young’s modulus, shear modulus) of three alloys measured by the dynamic resonance method. The alloys Ti-6Al-4V, Inconel IN718, and AISI 316 L were each investigated in a variant produced by an additive manufacturing processing route and by a conventional manufacturing processing route. The datasets include information on processing routes and parameters, heat treatments, grain size, specimen dimensions, and weight, as well as Young’s and shear modulus along with their measurement uncertainty. The process routes and methods are described in detail. The datasets were generated in an accredited testing lab, audited as BAM reference data, and are hosted in the open data repository Zenodo. Possible data usages include the verification of the correctness of the test setup via Young’s modulus comparison in low-cycle fatigue (LCF) or thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) testing campaigns, the design auf VHCF specimens and the use as input data for simulation purposes.
Modeling the lifetime reduction due to the superposition of TMF and HCF loadings in cast iron alloys
(2016)
The superposition of small amplitude, high frequency loading cycles (HCF) to slow, large amplitude loading cycles (TMF) can significantly reduce the fatigue life. In this work, the combined TMF+HCF loading has been experimentally investigated for a cast iron alloy. In particular, the influence of the HCF frequency of the HCF amplitude and of the location of the superposed HCF cycles has been assessed. It was observed that the HCF frequency has a limited impact on the TMF fatigue life. On the other side, the HCF-strain amplitude has a highly non-linear influence on the TMF fatigue life. A simple estimate for the fatigue life reduction due to the superposed HCF cycles has been derived from fracture mechanics considerations. It is assumed that the number of propagation cycles up to failure can be neglected after a threshold for the HCF loading has been reached. The model contains only two adjustable parameters and can be combined with any TMF life prediction model. The model predictions are compared with the test results for a large range of TMF+HCF loading conditions.
The determination of critical failure parameters during thermal shock requires a time and space resolved temperature measurement of the sample. High frequency pyrometry is a suitable technique for such a measurement task, which usually requires the knowledge of the optical properties of the investigated material. Another challenge is the infrared transparency of materials to be checked in the wavelength range of the pyrometer. The thermal shock disks are very thin, due to the need of homogeneous temperature distribution and to maintain a two-dimensional problem. To allow a pyrometric temperature measurement a universal calibration method for high frequency infrared cameras has been developed. Pyrometry in various media was demanded, as well as the estimation of optical properties (reflection, transmittance and emission) for the selected ceramics to be tested.
The thermal shock behavior of three commercial-advanced ceramics (SSiC, MgO–PSZ, Al2O3) is characterized in air and vacuum applying a laser thermal shock. The available testing system permits the reproducible setting of defined temperature profiles in thin disks and allows a heating-up thermal shock in various media. Due to the accurate determination of the time- and space-resolved temperature distribution, the local stress state can be calculated as a function of time. It is shown that the thermal shock strength is highest for SSiC and lowest in Al2O3 with MgO–PSZ in between. The approach presented in this work allows quantifying the stress state at failure in terms of tangential tensile stress. The investigated environment does not affect the thermal shock resistance under the studied experimental conditions.

TMF tests were carried out on EN-GJSA-XNiSiCr35-5-2 at constant minimum temperature (400 °C) and varying maximum temperatures (Tmax = 700 °C, 800 °C, 900 °C) with hold times of 180 s at Tmax and two phase angles (in-phase (IP), 180° out-of-phase (OP)). The results showed a comparable strength under OP- and IP-TMF loading. At Tmax = 700 °C and 900 °C, the lifetime in IP-tests was slightly longer than that of OP-tests, while it is vice versa at Tmax = 800 °C. The IP-tests at Tmax = 900 °C showed a similar lifetime as OP-tests at Tmax = 700 °C and 800 °C, which was unexpected for such a high testing temperature. All IP-tests at Tmax = 900 °C showed a continuous cyclic softening from the beginning on, which was different from all other testing conditions. Complementary metallographic investigations indicated that under this test condition, intergranular creep damage is present in the volume of the test pieces.

The knowledge of the temperature-induced changes of the superconductor volume and of the thermomechanical behavior of the different coil and tooling materials is required for predicting the coil geometry and the stress distribution in the coil after the Nb3Sn reaction heat treatment. In this paper, we have measured the Young’s and shear moduli of the HL-LHC 11 T Nb3Sn dipole magnet coil and reaction tool constituents during in situ heat cycles with the dynamic resonance method. The thermal expansion behaviors of the coil components and of a free standing Nb3Sn wire were compared based on dilation experiments.
The increased use of fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) composites for improved efficiency and reliability in energy related applications e.g. wind and marine turbine blades, nacelles, oil and gas flexible risers, also increases the demand for innovative non-destructive testing technologies. Thus, in order to achieve increased acceptance of suited and optimized non-destructive testing (NDT) methods in industry, the European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP) project ENG57 Validated Inspection Techniques for Composites in Energy Applications (VITCEA) deals with the development and validation of innovative NDT technologies. In this contribution, results concerning thermographic investigations at test specimens during tensile loading and active thermography testing after tensile loading are presented. Additionally, the determination of the optical properties (relative transmittance and directional spectral emissivity) of CFRP and GFRP test specimens is described.
The increased use of fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) composites for improved efficiency and reliability in energy related applications, e.g. wind and marine turbine blades, nacelles, oil and gas flexible risers, also increases the demand for innovative non-destructive testing technologies. In this contribution, results concerning the characterisation of CFRP and GFRP during and after quasi-static tensile loading are presented. It includes the measurement of optical properties in the infrared spectral range, tensile loading tests with the observation of the temperature distribution at one or both sides of the specimens using an infrared camera for the preparation and monitoring of intended natural defects, and active thermography inspections after tensile loading. It is shown that the defect preparation was successful. Thermographic monitoring during and active thermography testing after tensile loading enable the detection of the lateral extend of the generated defects. Differences between CFRP and GFRP materials are discussed.
The room temperature tensile properties of iron with different purity levels (commercially pure, high-purity, and ultra-high-purity) were characterized at different strain rates in the framework of an international Round-Robin involving four laboratories (BAM, IMR-TU, NIST, and SCKCEN). The test results were collected and analyzed by NIST, and are presented in this Technical Note.
Data from all the participating laboratories were found in good agreement, thus allowing a clear assessment of the influence of strain rate and purity level on tensile properties (mechanical resistance and ductility). A clear increase of yield strength and, to a lesser extent, tensile strength was observed for all materials as strain rate increases and purity level decreases. The highest strain rate sensitivity was associated with the highest purity level (ultra-high-purity Fe). Ductility trends were less unequivocal, but typically an increase of elongation at fracture and reduction of area was detected as strain rate and purity level increase. Significant differences in tensile properties were observed between the two investigated types of high-purity Fe, which can be attributed to an influence of the production process in terms of melting environment (atmosphere and crucible), as well as differences in chemical compositions.
Computational methods for lifetime prediction of metallic components under high-temperature fatigue
(2019)
The issue of service life prediction of hot metallic components subjected to cyclic loadings is addressed. Two classes of lifetime models are considered, namely, the incremental lifetime rules and the parametric models governed by the fracture mechanics concept. Examples of application to an austenitic cast iron are presented. In addition, computational techniques to accelerate the time integration of the incremental models throughout the fatigue loading history are discussed. They efficiently solve problems where a stabilized response of a component is not observed, for example due to the plastic strain which is no longer completely reversed and accumulates throughout the fatigue history. The performance of such an accelerated Integration technique is demonstrated for a finite element simulation of a viscoplastic solid under repeating loading–unloading cycles.
The tribological behaviour under dry sliding conditions of Magneli phase Ti4O7 and e-phase Ti2Cr2O7 with α-alumina as a sliding partner has been characterised at room temperature by oscillating sliding. The mechanical properties as well as Vickers hardness measurements do not reveal big differences between the materials, and 4-point bending strengths are around 200 MPa for both materials. Although the friction coefficients are in the medium range of 0.6 and do not differ much between the materials, the wear behaviour is very different. At room temperature, the wear coefficient of Ti2O7 is strongly dependent on relative humidity, and wear is highest under dry conditions when relative humidity is low as it is typically found for many ceramic materials. Ti2Cr2O7 shows remarkably different wear behaviour with the lowest wear in dry conditions. The measured coefficients of wear at low relative humidity of 4% are more than 2 orders of magnitude lower than those for Ti2O7.
Material modelling and lifetime prediction of Ni-base gas turbine blades under TMF conditions
(2014)
Under cyclic thermomechanical loading conditions, various damage mechanisms such as strain accumulation, creep cavitation, ageing, fatigue surface cracking etc. may take place in the material of a gas turbine blade. Depending on the loading conditions, all these effects can contribute to reduce the lifetime of the component. Subject of the present work is the development of a material model to describe the mechanical effects mentioned above, as well as the development of a lifetime model able to discriminate the different damage mechanisms.
The load-independent Vickers hardness (HV) of the individual phases in a non-reacted Nb3Sn
wire has been measured and the yield strength (YS) of the individual components estimated
from the HV values. The YS and tensile strength (Rm) of the composite wire are calculated
according the rule of mixtures (ROM). Calculated tensile properties are compared with tensile
test results that were obtained for the entire composite wire, for the wire after removal of the
Cu stabiliser and for single Nb-7.5wt.%Ta fibres.
Conventional indentation hardness measurements to obtain load independent Vickers hardness values for the different phases in multifilamentary superconducting (SC) wires are described. The concept of composite hardness is validated for a binary metalmatrix metalfilament NbTi/Cu composite wire. The tensile materials properties of the individual wire components are estimated from their indentation hardness. The potential and limitations of this approach are critically discussed, based on a comparison with ensile test results obtained for wires and extracted NbTi filaments.
The degradation mechanisms of state-of-the-art Nb-Ti/Cu superconductors are described, based on in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements during heat treatment. A quantitative description of the Nb-Ti/Cu degradation in terms of critical current density, Cu stabiliser resistivity and mechanical composite strength is presented. In an applied magnetic field a significant critical current degradation is already observed after a 5-minute 400 °C heat treatment, due to variations of –Ti precipitate size and distribution within the Nb-Ti alloy filaments. A strong degradation of the strand mechanical properties is observed after several minutes heating above 550 °C, which is also the temperature at which the formation of Cu-Ti intermetallic phases is detected. Several minutes heating at 250 °C are sufficient to increase the RRR of the strongly cold work strands inside a Rutherford type cable from about 80 to about 240. Heating for several minutes at 400 °C does not cause a significant conductor degradation in self-field and, thus, leaves enough temperature margin for the electrical interconnection of Nb-Ti/Cu conductors with common low temperature solders.
Study of elastic properties of aero-engine metallic materials is of paramount importance because it forms one of the foundations of engineering design of components. Nine isotropic aero-engine metallic materials were studied for their elastic properties for a temperature range varying from ambient to operating limit. Test was carried out in vacuum to prevent oxidation of specimens. Dimensional corrections of the specimen due to thermal expansion were taken into account. Dynamic elastic modulus was evaluated as the average of the moduli that was obtained through first flat and edge flexural mode frequencies. Dynamic shear modulus was established through the first torsional mode of frequency.
The elastic properties of the single-crystal nickel-base superalloy CMSX-4 used as a blade material in gas turbines were investigated by the sonic resonance method in the temperature interval between room temperature and 1300 °C. Elastic constants at such high temperatures are needed to model the mechanical behavior of blade material during manufacturing (hot isostatic pressing) as well as during technical accidents which may happen in service (overheating). High reliability of the results was achieved using specimens of different crystallographic orientations, exciting various vibration modes as well as precise measurement of the material density and thermal Expansion required for modeling the resonance frequencies by finite element method. Combining the results measured in this work and literature data the elastic constants of the gamma and gamma' phases were predicted.
This prediction was supported by measurement of the temperature dependence of the gamma'fraction.
All data obtained in this work are given in numerical or analytical forms and can be easily used for different scientific and engineering calculations.
Austenitic cast iron was primarily used as material for pumps and mountings due to their excellent corrosion resistance. Certain grades, especially those with spherical graphite morphology, offer also a good high temperature strength and a high scaling resistance, which opened new fields of application e.g. for casing part of gas turbines, exhaust manifolds and turbo chargers. For such applications, a high ductility and creep resistance is beneficial, as exhibited by the studied alloy EN-GJSA-XNiSiCr35-5-2. Its high Ni-content produces the austenitic matrix, while Cr increases strength, hardness and scaling resistance.
The alloy is standardized according to DIN EN 13835 with respect to chemical composition and mechanical properties (strength, elongation at fracture, Young's modulus, hardness and impact energy) at room temperature. However, data on mechanical properties at high temperature were rarely published in the open literature.
In a recently completed research project, we comprehensively characterized the alloy EN-GJSA-XNiSiCr35-5-2 in terms of its temperature dependent mechanical behavior concerning strength and to isothermal as well as non-isothermal fatigue behavior. The results were used to calibrate a material and lifetime model. TMF tests were carried out with a constant minimum temperature (Tmin = 400 °C) and varying maximum temperatures (Tmax = 700 °C, 800 °C, 900 °C) with hold times of 180 s at Tmax and two phase angles (in-phase (IP), 180° out-of-phase (OP)).
The investigated alloy showed a strongly deviating TMF behavior as compared to ferritic SiMo alloys investigated in a previous project: the austenitic material exhibits a comparable strength under OP- and IP-TMF loading, while the ferritic alloys showed a distinct higher strength under IP- than under OP-TMF load. At Tmax = 700 °C and 900 °C, the lifetime of Ni-Resist in IP-tests is slightly longer than that of OP-tests, while it is vice versa at Tmax = 800 °C. The IP-tests at Tmax = 900 °C show a comparable lifetime as OP-tests at Tmax = 700 °C and 800 °C, which was unexpected for such a high testing temperature. When plotting the stress range versus N it becomes clear that the behavior at Tmax = 900 °C is different from the other investigated temperatures: at 700 °C and 800 °C the stress-curve exhibits a range of stabilized stress for both phase angles. This is also true for the OP-tests at Tmax = 900 °C. However, all IP-tests at Tmax = 900 °C show a continuous cyclic softening from the beginning on.
The stiffness of the test pieces decrease continuously with increasing number of cycles and their surfaces show numerous cracks. Complementary metallographic investigations showed that beside classical fatigue damage with cracks initiated at the surface, intergranular creep damage was found in the volume of the test pieces. Pores and cracks are formed at grain boundaries perpendicular to the applied load. This is also a distinct difference to the SiMo alloys.
