Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a major contributor to the safe railway operation. Even though NDT reliability in railway maintenance is affected by human factors, there are only just a few studies published in this field so far. Education and training of the NDT personnel are some of the most important drivers of safe and reliable NDT. Continuously improving current practices and tools used for educational purposes can be achieved not only through technical con¬tent, but also through the attention to human factors. The aim of this study was to deepen the understanding of possible human-related risks in the manual ultrasonic inspection of the hollow railway axles and to suggest measures to improve the education and training of the NDT person¬nel. This was achieved by means of Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) carried out with eight NDT experts and by a survey of 27 experienced inspectors. The results show that failures can happen throughout the entire NDT process. Prevention of those failures could be improved through the optimization of the organization, technology, documentation and regulations, working conditions and the general process, and through the optimization of the formal education and training. Specialized training of the executives, extended training of the supervisors and the inspectors and improvement of the inspection documentation have been suggested. The study also showed potential for the improvements of the inspection in the field.

In 2018, BAM (Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing) and the young analysts of the department Analytical Chemistry at the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (German Chemical Society, GDCh) jointly organized the second summer school on quality assurance in analytical chemistry in Berlin, Germany. Over fifty doctoral students that are still in the initial stages of work participated in the week-long event and the participants were confronted with the most important basic concepts of internal and external systems of quality assurance in analytical chemistry.
Especially young scientists and scholars deal with the development of analysis methods and often generate an increasingly growing wealth of data. Results are mostly evaluated under quantitative aspects and need to be assessed subject-specifically. In addition to the purely scientific requirements these results also should meet the requirements of analytical quality assurance. For this purpose, the development of analytical methods is accompanied by a process of validation – the documented proof that a method is suitable for the intended purpose and the defined requirements.
This talk summarizes the didactic concept, which was used by the organizers to span an arc from the handling of process characteristics, such as accuracy, precision, linearity, recovery, up to measurement uncertainty and modern multivariate analysis techniques. In an open space workshop, the participants discussed their idea of quality management and worked out requirements after common sense. Interestingly, many participants had already implemented important quality assurance without professionally knowing it.
In the 21st century, adequate habitat and functioning infrastructure are critical for global societal and economic stability. In addition, growing urbanisation and environmental pollution cause challenges to societies.
With increasing velocity, humanity faces that the current way of living is not sustainable. Thus, habitat, infrastructure, urbanisation, environment and sustainability are definitively among the most striking challenges of the 21st century.
By consulting, planning, building, maintaining, exploiting and processing of global resources, civil engineers contribute significantly to the existence of these challenges. This is a high responsibility, but due to the heavy involvement, together with adjacent disciplines such as architecture, geosciences, chemistry,
physics, environmental sciences and economics, civil engineers also hold the key to mitigate these challenges and provide a brighter global future.
Solutions towards greener, more sustainable and economically viable materials do exist, and there is ongoing research on how greener technologies can contribute to better livelihood and economic growth, but their level of implementation is limited, a major reason for which is that these approaches require more fundamental understanding rather than standard application.
