Glieder.
Traces emerging conceptions of authoritarianism, their transformation, and their fate through the recent history of social psychology. The issue was first formulated by W. Reich (1933 (1946)) in an attempt to combine Freudian and Marxist ideas into an explanation of political developments in Germany. E. FROMM pursued the idea further in the analysis of a questionnaire study of German workers and in his 1941 book Escape from Freedom. Subsequent work by the Frankfurt Institute merged with research at Berkeley and produced The Authoritarian Personality by T. W. Adorno et al. (1950). Initially received enthusiastically, the theory gradually succumbed under the impact of attempts to redirect its political impact and to drain its political meaning. This series of transformations in changing historical contexts points to the need for a better historical understanding of social psychology.
(Zeitschrift/Karoline Weiland – ZPID) – Identifies common features of various psychological models and existential categories of humanity, based on Alfred Adler's concept of social interest (Gemeinschaftsgefühl). The ability to relate to others, which Adler defined as a criterion of the healthy person, is discussed in the context of Martin Buber's existential philosophy and concepts introduced by Erich FROMM and Abraham Maslow in humanistic psychology. Concepts involving the inability to relate to others (found, for instance, in the works of Adler, Buber, Pascal, and Göthe) are also discussed.

The great moral problem of today, according to Erich FROMM, is the submission to power. The replacement of dictatorship by democracy and the relieving of internal psychological repression do not make authority disappear, only anonymous. FROMM's distinction between authoritarian and humanist conscience is contrasted with Sigmund Freud's theory of the genesis of the superego: authoritarian conscience emphasizes obedience to external force, the sacrifice of integrity for security, and the feeling of weakness and dependency; humanist conscience is rational and free, making obedience a matter of responsibility to one's self. The evasion mechanisms of authoritarianism, destructiveness, and conformism are described.

The trends, convictions, and intellectual influences shared by a variety of psychoanalytic dissidents are elucidated through their individual and collective responses to Sigmund Freud's psychology of religion. This psychology as epitomized in Totem and Taboo (1913) constitutes an Oedipal monism, in which the stages between totemism and Christianity represent increasingly complex derivates of unconscious parricidal fantasies. In The Future of an Illusion (1922), Freud argued that animism represents a defensive measure to minimize anxiety in the face of overpowering and incomprehensible natural forces. Carl Jung, O. Rank, Erich FROMM, and I. Suttie all rejected this reductive strategy of interpretation, arguing that religious beliefs and aspirations may have profound developmental significance. Significantly, they were all influenced, directly or indirectly, by J. J. Bachofen, the Swiss jurist and mythographer, and author of Das Mutterrecht (The Mother Right, 1861). Jung, Rank, FROMM, and Suttie emphasized the role of cultural and historical factors in shaping the individual psyche. Apart from Bachofen's pervasive influence, one way of accounting for their differences with Freud is to see Freudian theory as a psychology that emphasizes biology and treats the contents of consciousness as the surface of a sexual or aggressive character. In contrast, Jung, Rank, FROMM, and Suttie were skeptical about the contents of consciousness, and acknowledged the role of unconscious motivation and conflict in clinical psychopathology and social behavior. At the same time, however, they attempted to rejoin the older, pre-Darwinian philosophical anthropology, in which social, religious, and ethical needs are integral dimensions to a deeper understanding of the human animal.
