Research on Marcuse’s Theory of Alienation Criticism and Liberation in Psychoanalytic Context, Master thesis, Art Theory, Nanjing University, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China 2016 [application of Fromm’s theories to art].

  • Through hackling Herbert Marcuse’s theory of alienation criticism and liberation in the psychoanalytic context, the article aims to illustrate what influence on Marcuse the psychoanalysis theory has. Besides, by analyzing and comparing with other theorists’ alienation criticism and liberation theory in the related Schools, the article tries to find out not only the similarities and differences but also the successive relationship between each other. Meanwhile the article tries to discuss the evaluation of Marcuse’s of alienation criticism and the liberation theory in the contemporary. As a Western Marxist esthetician, Marcuse combines Marxist aesthetics with Freudian psychoanalysis. He focuses on emphasizing biological characteristics and psychological analysis of individuals of Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. Furthermore, Marcuse transforms and re-interprets Freud’s psychoanalytic concepts such as instinct, unconscious, personality structure by combining with Marx’s social and cultural critique theory, and creates his own critique concept, which contains additional depression, reality principle and erotic sublimation. More importantly, Marcuse rediscovers Freud’s brilliant exposition on imagination and fantasy, associates Freud’s theory with aesthetic and artistic liberation path, tries to regard aesthetic art as a tool to liberate individuals and reform the society. Thus Marcuse builds up a new horizon for sensibility, art and aesthetic field. From Freud to Marcuse and Erich Fromm, to Deleuze and Jameson, they all have different understandings of concepts such as unconscious. Therefore they form different civilizations and Liberation theories. Those differences reflect an academic transition. Owing to combination unconscious and artistic, the emphasis on biological foundation for psychoanalysis and establishment of aesthetic utopia, Marcuse plays an important role in the academic development. Marcuse’s alienation critique and aesthetic liberation theory can be seen as a cultural critique, in which aesthetics become an important tool for criticism and redemption. His focus on individual’s alienation reflects a strong humanistic care, and point to an utopian imagination about the future. But his analysis on human alienation in the psychoanalytic context has surmounted the specific social historical conditions and ideological barriers, and has a great significance for the contemporary China.
