The Research on the Influence of Traditional Culture on Modern Design [传统造物观对现代产品设计的启示], Master thesis, Art of Design, Hunan University, Changsha, Hunan, China 2005, 57 pp. [Application of Fromm's theories to art].

  • In modern society, people are paying a huge price while possessing more and more material products. Natural resources are becoming exhausted and living environment is deteriorating. As a result, the faith crisis spreads in the human’s void and lonely heart. The deviation from the material and spirit makes modern human to be in an alienation syndrome. Erich Fromm believes that people have to change the attitude towards life, which is transforming >possessing< and >utilizing< into >exiting<. Only when people completely change their life style, and resist the value orientation of paying attention to possession, can the loss of spiritual home be avoided. Erich Fromm’s viewpoint is different from Chinese traditional design perception in approach but equally satisfactory in result. Chinese traditional product design attaches importance to Chinese traditional humanistic value such as advocating nature, simplicity and frugality, returning to the purity and simplicity and placing human in the center, which are exactly what modern product design lacks in. Therefore, it is necessary for modern designers to explore the spirit of the traditional design perception and merge it into modern industrial product designing. In this way, not only products can be combined perfectly with the beauty of material and spirit, but also it can be used for reference to get rid of the negative influences brought by the western contemporary scientific rational spirit in the age of the reconstitution of the global value system.– The article mostly probes how to apply the traditional design perception to modern product design. It constructively brings forward traditional design perception in three aspects, the relationship of human and products, the relationship of products and nature, and the rich cultural connotations in traditional design. As to the relationship between human and the design object, it is proposed that designers should strengthen the interaction between human and products, and consumer should be allowed to participate in designing. In the relationship between products and nature, products should be made up of natural materials and recyclable materials and be of low energy consuming, to ensure lasting development. In the aspect of expressing the products’ cultural meaning, it is believed that applying the traditional elements and inheriting the traditional life style are the two keys.
