The »Volta-German Shared Colonial Heritage Project« focuses on the archaeology and ›shared heritage‹ of German colonialism in the former Togo/Togoland colony. Following up on initial (field) research in 2022 and 2023, the Ghanaian and German project partners successfully ran an extended field season at Kpando in early 2024. Four lines of investigation were developed. The first involved detailed building archaeological studies of the Palace of the Paramount Chief as well as the so-called Sisters Convent in preparation for rehabilitation planning. The second study expanded research into the urban fabric of Kpando. Historic buildings were described and mapped with the aim of gaining a better understanding of the evolution of the town during the German colonial period. Intercultural building practices were of particular interest. A third line of research supplemented the above studies with investigations of historical sources as well as the documentation of local knowledge of the history of Kpando in the form of personal and family histories. As family histories are manifested in the built fabric of the town, this study adds an important local perspective to our investigations of building cultures during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The fourth study initiated systematic research on colonial-period soundscapes in the Volta Region and beyond. Numerous church bells were documented, adding a new facet to the study of the ›shared heritage‹ of German colonialism in Africa.
We study the problem of answering conjunctive queries with free access patterns (CQAPs) under updates. A free access pattern is a partition of the free variables of the query into input and output. The query returns tuples over the output variables given a tuple of values over the input variables.
We introduce a fully dynamic evaluation approach that works for all CQAPs and is optimal for two classes of CQAPs. This approach recovers prior work on the dynamic evaluation of conjunctive queries without access patterns.
We first give a syntactic characterisation of all CQAPs that admit constant time per single-tuple update and whose output tuples can be enumerated with constant delay given a tuple of values over the input variables.
We further chart the complexity trade-off between the preprocessing time, update time and enumeration delay for a class of CQAPs. For some of these CQAPs, our approach achieves optimal, albeit non-constant, update time and delay. This optimality is predicated on the Online Matrix-Vector Multiplication conjecture.
We finally adapt our approach to the dynamic evaluation of tractable CQAPs over probabilistic databases under updates.
Applying Ariadne: Practical Insights into Learning Style Identification via Hidden Markov Models
(2025)
With the use of learning management systems students benefit from being recommended suitable learning elements based on their individual needs. In doing so, recommendation algorithms are applied which first query the student’s learning style. To improve the recommendation of learning elements a continuous analysis of the individual’s learning style is required. A frequent questionnaire assessment would however be too time consuming. Instead, in a prior study an algorithm has been designed to identify changes in learning styles from the student’s selection of learn-
ing elements. In this paper, we investigate the functionality of that algorithm by applying it on real student data. In particular, we test if the algorithm correctly indicates changes in learning styles. The utilised data is collected in our learning management system. To be precise, the data is obtained from 22 students enrolled in a software engineering course during the winter term of 2023/24. The data comprises two types of information for each student: 1) learning style collected at the start and end of the term, and 2) the user’s actual selection of learning elements inside the
learning management system. The uniqueness of this study lies in the data and the evaluation strategy based on it. Having the learning style at the end of the semester period as ground truth allows us to test if the algorithm operates correctly with actual user data from our learning management system. The results validate the behaviour of our algorithm, yet they strongly suggest the need for an adaptation. Further research is required on how to parameterise the underlying models.

In this introduction to the Special topic on future warfare from the perspective of technology assessment (TA), guest editors Markus Bresinsky and Karsten Weber describe how the idea for the Special topic developed, what contributions they expected, and why it seems important that the TA community reflects on its role in assessing the impacts and repercussions of weapons technology on individuals, societies, and the environment. This reflection on its own role, the authors argue, must be informed by the current state of global affairs. Regardless of whether TA is seen as an honest broker or an issue advocate – it cannot stand aside and ignore the many challenges posed by rapid change, or even massive deterioration, in international relations. In order to reflect on its own role, it must team up with scientists from other disciplines and practitioners from all professions.
This working-paper is based on the practice-oriented seminar “Social Research Methods: Investigating Civil Society and Civic Engagement” designed and led by Prof. Dr. Chiara von Hollen-Pierobon at Viadrina University during the summer semester of 2025. The seminar provided students with a dual foundation by combining theoretical grounding in civil society studies with applied methodological training through the conduct of a class-based research project. As part of the seminar, students carried out qualitative interviews, ethnographic observations and focus groups involving a range of local civic actors, including cultural and arts initiatives, environmental organizations, and elderly support networks. The paper presents the main results of the fieldwork conducted within the framework of the seminar, providing an empirically grounded snapshot of the state of civil society and civic engagement in Frankfurt (Oder). The city is historically shaped by its position at the crossroads of Western and Eastern Europe, while its location on the border between Germany and Poland endows it with significant potential as a transnational bridge. The findings shed light on support structures for civil society, the role of networks, the importance of sensory approaches and locally grounded perspectives, as well as the major challenges faced by civic actors in the city. In addition, this working paper offers a set of recommendations derived from students’ field experiences and their engagement with local civil society organizations. It concludes by reflecting on the role of universities as spaces for engaged scholarship, not only as sites of knowledge production but also as active civic actors embedded in their local contexts. In this sense, the paper highlights university civic engagement as a core dimension of academic responsibility, emphasizing the capacity of universities to foster dialogue, support local civil society, and contribute to addressing societal challenges through sustained collaboration and knowledge exchange.
