What is metadata?
- data describing one or several resources or as
- data that is connected to an object and which describes this object
Generally, metadata thus represents a description of documents, objects or services and contains information about their content, structure or form. (e.g. bibliographic data sets and catalog entries in libraries are a form of metadata.)
The Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (in short Dublin Core or DC) that consists of fifteen basic elements shall serve as the basis for the metadata on this document server. Dublin Core is the result of international efforts to find a common consensus in the description of electronic objects (in the broadest sense).
The Library of Congress (LoC), the Online Cataloging Library Center (OCLC) and a number of national libraries are working with Dublin Core in their projects or are about to introduce Dublin Core.
