The comprehension of knowledge is to be linked with the media to distribute, to store and to make knowledge available. The knowledge, which a medieval manuscript is including, is to be meant completely different from the knowledge published in the many formats of printed materials. The relation between knowledge and media has a close connection with libraries in their role as places of scientific discussions, as institutions of human heritage and now as players on the field of information infrastructure. In the transition from printed to digital media we are in the situation to experience deep changes. Computers and internet play the leading role. There is some evidence, that text oriented knowledge is changing to data based knowledge. The textual form of aggregation will be replaced by the aggregation of pictures: Instead of texts representing theoretical discussions data based ‘images’ are in the focus of the knowledge paradigm to answer and to explain empirical questions.
