We present a handheld fiber-coupled terahertz spectrometer operating at a center wavelength of 1550 nm. The key elements are a fs-fiber laser, a fiber stretcher delay line and fiber-coupled antennas, which contain novel InAlAs-InGaAs multi layer chips. First experimental data obtained with this system demonstrates its great potential and robustness. In addition, we investigate different hazardous and harmless liquids in reflection geometry. These experiments show that liquids are in principle distinguishable by terahertz spectroscopy. Finally, first steps towards an algorithm that allows for an extraction of the liquids dielectric properties are discussed. The algorithm works for the analysis of reflection data even if the liquid is located inside a container.
In the present study, the impact of static traffic loading on the slight deflection effects in the concrete structure of an existing bridge has been investigated using distributed fiber optic sensors. In the face of increasing traffic density and severe traffic loading, the results of the load tests on the Amsterdam bridge 705 make an important contribution to the understanding of its structural behavior. The concept of the static loading was based on the use of two 36-ton trucks stopped on the bridge at multiple pre-determined locations. The load applied in this way led to location-dependent small deflection effects recorded as longitudinal strain of the sensing fiber embedded at the underside of the bridge. The measurements were performed with a commercially-available solution based on Tunable Wavelength Coherent Optical Time Domain Reflectometry with the measurement accuracy in the range of 0.5 µm/m.
A thorough characterization of base materials is the prereq- uisite for further research. In this paper, the characterization data of the reference materials (CEM I 42.5 R, limestone pow- der, calcined clay and a mixture of these three components) used in the second funding phase of the priority program 2005 of the German Research Foundation (DFG SPP 2005) are presented under the aspects of chemical and min- eralogical composition as well as physical and chemical properties. The data were collected based on tests performed by up to eleven research groups involved in this cooperative program.
