Ductile materials are used in many applications such as hydrogen storage andtransport, energy plants and additively manufactured components. High safetystandards are vital for such applications, which underline the necessity of thor-oughly investigating ductile failure to ensure safety and increase componentsefficiency. Ductile failure is mainly prompted by the evolution of the so-calledductile damage, characterized by the nucleation, growth and coalescence ofmicrovoids due to plastic deformation. Moreover, the plastic zones formed at thecrack tip of ductile materials exhibit high sensitivity to the stress triaxiality level, which in turn distinctly depends on the geometry of the considered component. The quantification of the stress triaxiality at the crack tip is therefore essential tobetter understand and predict ductile crack propagation and failure. For that rea-son, a non-local ductile damage model is employed in this work to simulate theductile crack propagation under different stress triaxiality conditions. Differentgeometries are considered, such as constrained geometries of notched bendingspecimens and unconstrained geometries of center cracked tension specimens, which characterize the different triaxiality levels. To address the effects of thick-nessandinitialcracklength,three-dimensionalgeometriesaresimulated,whichaccount for the out-of-plane crack-tip constraints. Finally, to evaluate the predic-tion quality of the simulations, corresponding experiments have been carried outand direct comparisons are conducted, with respect to the crack length, ductilecrack propagation and resistance curves.
Damage mechanics models exhibit favorable properties such as the intrinsic influence of stress triaxiality on damage evolution and the prediction of crack initiation as well as propagation leading to structural failure. However, their application requires advanced expertise hindering the transfer of these models into industrial practice, especially since the parameter calibration is a key obstacle. In this paper, a simplified procedure is proposed for a non-local extension of the Gurson–Tvergaard–Needleman model (GTN), which is a highly accepted model for ductile failure of metals. The procedure is iteration free and requires experimental input data from only two standardized tests. The parameters are determined using look-up diagrams created on the basis of systematic simulations and made available for different material behavior covering the majority of ductile metals. Benchmark tests for three different steels are conducted to evaluate the robustness of the proposed procedure. The reliability of the GTN model is validated for all investigated materials.
Due to their good ratio of stiffness and strength to weight, foam materials find use in lightweight engineering. Though, in many applications like structural bending or tension, the scale separation between macroscopic structure and the foam’s mesostructure like cells size, is relatively weak and the mechanical properties of the foam appear to be size dependent. Positive as well as negative size effects have been observed for certain basic tests of foams, i.e., the material appears either to be more compliant or stiffer than would be expected from larger specimens. Performing tests with sufficiently small specimens is challenging as any disturbances from damage of cell walls during sample preparation or from loading devices must be avoided. Correspondingly, the number of respective data in literature is relatively low and the results are partly contradictory.
In order to avoid the problems from sample preparation or bearings, the present study employs virtual tests with CT data of real medium-density ceramic foams. A number of samples of different size is “cut” from the resulting voxel data. Subsequently, the apparent elastic properties of each virtual sample are “measured” directly by a free vibrational analysis using finite cell method, thereby avoiding any disturbances from load application or bearings. The results exhibit a large scatter of the apparent moduli per sample size, but with a clear negative size effect in all investigated basic modes of deformation (bending, torsion, uniaxial). Finally, the results are compared qualitatively and quantitatively to available experimental data from literature, yielding common trends as well as open questions.
The usage of numerical homogenization to obtain structure–property relations by applying the finite element method at both the micro- and macroscale has gained much interest in the research community. The computational cost of this so-called FE2 method, however, is typically so high that algorithmic modifications and reduction methods are essential. In the present contribution, a monolithic solution algorithm is combined with reduced order modeling (ROM) and the empirical cubature method (ECM) for hyper integration. It is further complemented by a clustered training strategy, which lowers the training effort and the number of necessary ROM modes immensely. The applied methods can be combined modularly as desired in finite element approaches. An implementation in terms of an extension to the previously established MonolithFE2 code is provided. Numerical examples show the efficiency and accuracy of the monolithic hyper ROM FE2 method and the advantages of the clustered training strategy. Even for two-scale problems with complex geometry and complex, inelastic material behaviors it was shown that speedup factors of almost 1000 (i.e., three orders of magnitude) regarding the online simulation time and of up to 30 regarding all necessary computing effort are obtainable in comparison to the conventional FE2 scheme. The training stage requires only around 3% of that time, meaning that the offline phase is relatively inexpensive, in contrast to many Neural Network approaches, whose employment, in terms of total computational efficiency, only pays off if a large number of online simulations is to be conducted, without requiring additional training.
Since 2002, repetitive measurements have been taken on the southern Greenland ice sheet to study the change in ice elevation along a historical route defined by Alfred de Quervain. Until 2012, static GNSS measurements were carried out every 20 km under the responsibility of Wilfried Korth (Greenland Korth Expedition GKE). Since 2015, kinematic GNSS measurements have been recorded every second along the entire traverse from the East (near Tasiilaq) to the
West (near Ilulissat).
The kinematic repeat measurement took place in summer 2020, but it had to be ended prematurely and therefore the area of influence of Jakobshavn Isbræ could not be examined. Two comparison methods were used. On the one hand that of the crossing points and on the
other hand that of the minimum distances. Both methods give similar results for the Greenland ice sheet. Another expedition took place in spring 2021, which kinematically measured the entire traverse. Based on this data, an estimate for the missing area from 2020 can be made and thus the comparability to the previous campaigns at the same season can be established.
Likewise, the change in winter from the end of the thaw period to the beginning of it can be examined.
Along the traverse, the influence of the two outlet glaciers Helheim in the East and Jakobshavn Isbræ in the West on the change in elevation is significant. In the accumulation area, a maximum gain of 2.1 m is recorded, whereas in the ablation area, a loss of up to 38.7 m occurs in the period from 2002 to 2021.
* Verringerung des Volumens der großen Eisschilde und Gletscher
* Veränderung der Fließgeschwindigkeit der Gletscher
* Verschiebung der Permafrostgrenzen
Since 1991 a long-term project exists for investigation of ice elevation change, ice flow velocity and deformation.at Swiss Camp (West Greenland, inland ice, 80 km from Ilulissat). The site was measured by the author with precise geodetic GNSS measurements on ground since 1991 until 2014 by 12 campaigns, and studied in relation to climatic indicators.
In spring 2012 an expedition of the HEIM group traversed the Greenlandic inland ice from East to West. They conducted GNSS measurements along their entire route in order to continue the former measurements of KORTH 2002 and later by HITZIGER. Motivated by the author the HEIM expedition could also re-measure completely the research area at Swiss Camp in end of May 2021. Here we report about the results in context of former campaigns.
The 2021 GNSS measurements were performed by a Trimble R12 receiver mounted on a sledge which was transported over the snow surface to the old stake positions. Together with kinematical measurements of all path ways the current heights were used to determine the elevation changes by digital elevation models and 48 single point comparisons.
Together with the old results from 1991 to 2014 by the author the current elevation changes now result in a unique long-term 30-year time series of elevation changes from precise geodetic ground measurements on the Greenlandic ice sheet.
During the overall observation period from 1991 to 2021 the ice height decreased by 19.3 meter. The new results show that in the period from 2014 to 2015 until 2021 the ice height is still distinctly decreasing, but less than 2006 to 2014. The peak was reached in 2011-2014 with 1,4 m/year. Since 2014 to 2021 the decrease in height was 0.9 m/year on average. These results are discussed together with climatic indicators. Air temperature and pdd-values correlate well with these elevation changes and show lower melting rates in this period. This is agreeing with mass balance results from satellite observations (GRACE resp. GRACE-FO). So the locally derived height changes from geodetic ground measurements confirm the large-scale satellite results.
In 1912 a Swiss expedition, leaded by the meteorologist Alfred de Quervain, crossed the inland ice of Greenland on a track from Disko Bay to Tasiilaq. It was the second successful crossing of the ice cap after Nansens expedition in 1888. De Quervain provided first good height data of the glacier surface. The accuracy of the heights is in the range of 2 m about 10 m. There are only a few such data sets available which are measured more than 100 years ago.
In 2002 a series of six geodetic expeditions started on the same traverse as 1912. The last measurements were made in August 2017. In result there are a lot of information available:
- very precise height changes for the last 15 years along a 700 km profile,
- height differences measured on more than 20 camp sites of the 1912 expedition
- very dense (spacing of some meters) profiles of heights of the rim of the inland ice.
The results can be used to answer different questions: Are there significant differences in the height changes and mass loss resp. between the 100 years after 1912 and the last decade? Is the speed of mass loss more or less stable or increasing? How the surface topography is changing (an analysis of remote sensing data is included)? An observed height change is mainly a mass change or a change of snow density?
And last but not least the data are usable for direct verification of altimetry data such as IceSat. Both the IceSat heights and the height changes can be compared.
In 2002 a long term project for geodetic monitoring of heights and height changes was started. A series of six field campaigns was realized and the project is still running. In result there are precise surface height data available representative for a traverse between Isortoq (East Greenland) and Ilulissat (West Greenland). The measurements were carried out mainly by GNSS in static mode for points close to the camp sites and in kinematic mode for the full traverse since 2015. The data are showing an increasing of the glacier volume shrinking. Close to the rims of the ice cap in 2015 the lowering of the surface was nearly 150 % of the value of 2002. In the middle of the traverse where the height is about 2,500 m a surface rising of 0.15 m/a changed to a more or less stable surface in 2015. All together this leads to a significant speed up of the negative volume change. Results of satellite missions like GRACE are showing a negative but not increasing mass balance of the region which was investigated. This difference might be caused in refreezing of melting water within the upper snow layers. Therefore at some representative spots density profiles close to the surface were measured and compared to older data. The density data are changed to higher values close to the surface and one can find much more ice layers into the snow. This means that out of the blue ice areas above the equilibrium zone an interpretation of height changes is difficult. A direct link between height and mass is not possible or at least biased.
The Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP) in Alaska is a long-term glacier monitoring project with unique records in the area of biology, meteorology, resource and environmental studies, geology, geomorphology and geophysics, terrestrial photogrammetry, remote sensing and land surveying. The Juneau Icefield is one of several icefield regions and glaciated areas stretching from southern British Columbia to the Alaska Peninsula and across the Canada border with approximately 40 main- and 140 sub-glaciers.
The first data sets have been recorded in the year 1946. Annual GNSS profile measurements over approximately 4.400 square kilometers have been measured since 1992. These unique records in combination with geotechnical data sets represent a detailed report of weather conditions in northern regions. A low cost based L1 GNSS monitoring will be installed in the next field session 2018 to determine glacier velocity and elevation. Terrestrial laser scanning and SfM-methodes will be used to supplement the terrasat X tandem DGM.
The second glacier research region of our institute is Greenland. GNSS profiles from coast to coast have been observed over the last 15 years. The paper will describe similarities and differences of the total mass balance and global effects. Both glacier regions are indicating elevation changes related to temperature plus rain- or snowfall. Remote sensing datasets provide additional measurement result to discuss this research approach.
Ice Elevation Change Based on GNSS Measurements along the Korth-Traverse in Southern Greenland
(2022)
In 1912, a Swiss expedition led by meteorologist Alfred de Quervain crossed the Greenland ice sheet on a route from Disko Bay to Tasiilaq. Based on that, in 2002, a series of geodetic expeditions carried out by W. Korth and later by T. Hitziger began along the same traverse as in 1912, with the last measurements taken in May 2021. The statically collected GPS/GNSS data provide very accurate elevation changes at 36 points along the almost 700 km long crossing over a period of 19 years. According to this, there is a maximum increase of 2.1 m in the central area and a decrease of up to 38.7 m towards the coasts (influence Ilulissat Isbræ). By using kinematic GNSS measurements, there is a very dense profile with a spacing of a few meters. The comparison of those measurements is performed using crossing points or minimum distances and gives equivalent results for both methods. It is shown that local ice topography is preserved, and thus gaps in data sets can be caught. Areas of accumulation and ablation on the ice sheet can be identified, showing the widespread influence of outlet glaciers up to 200 km. The data can be used for direct verification of altimetry data, such as IceSat. Both IceSat elevations and their changes can be compared.
Over the last two decades, a small group of researchers repeatedly crossed the Greenland interior skiing along a 700-km long route from east to west, acquiring precise GNSS measurements at exactly the same locations. Four such elevation profiles of the ice sheet measured in 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2015 were differenced and used to analyze the surface elevation change. Our goal is to compare such locally measured GNSS data with independent satellite observations. First, we show an agreement in the rate of elevation change between the GNSS data and satellite radar altimetry (ERS, Envisat, CryoSat-2). Both datasets agree well (2002–2015), and both correctly display local features such as an elevation increase in the central part of the ice sheet and a sharp gradual decline in the surface heights above Jakobshavn Glacier. Second, we processed satellite gravimetry data (GRACE) in order for them to be comparable with local GNSS measurements. The agreement is demonstrated by a time series at one of the measurement sites. Finally, we provide our own satellite gravimetry (GRACE, GRACE-FO, Swarm) estimate of the Greenland mass balance: first a mild decrease (2002–2007: −210 ± 29 Gt/yr), then an accelerated mass loss (2007–2012: −335 ± 29 Gt/yr), which was noticeably reduced afterwards (2012–2017: −178 ± 72 Gt/yr), and nowadays it seems to increase again (2018–2019: −278 ± 67 Gt/yr).
Micromorphic theories became an established tool to model size effects in materials like dispersion, localization phenomena or (apparently) size dependent properties. However, the formulation of adequate constitutive relations with its large number of constitutive relations and respective parameters hinders the usage of the full micromorphic theory, which has 18 constitutive parameters already in the isotropic linear elastic case. Although it is clear that these parameters are related to predicted size effects, the individual meaning of single parameters has been rather unclear.
The present work tries to elucidate the interpretation of the constitutive relations and their parameters. For this purpose, a harmonic decomposition is applied to the governing equations of micromorphic theory. The harmonic modes are interpreted at the microscale using a homogenization method for a simple volume element with spherical pore. The resulting boundary-value problem at the microscale is solved analytically for the linear-elastic case using spherical harmonics resulting in closed-form expressions for all of the elastic 18 parameters. These values are used to predict the size effect in torsion of slender foam specimens. The predictions are compared with respective experimental results from literature.
The damage mechanics model of Gurson has been successfully applied in
research for many years to simulate ductile failure mechanism and crack propagation. The determination of the large number of material parameters has turned out to be a problem, particularly with regard to broad application. In this respect, various approaches have been
pursued in the literature in order to determine the parameters from a certain number of more or less complex experiments, mostly through iterative FE simulations. The authors had carried out sensitivity studies in a series of investigations and proposed a procedure to
determine the parameters only from a tensile test and a standardized fracture mechanics test. This procedure has been further simplified by providing diagrams, from which the parameters of the Gurson model can be obtained without iteration and exclusively using the experimental data of two standardized tests mentioned above. In this article, this procedure is applied for various materials and the prediction quality is checked.
