Realized an edited essay video authored by Eyal Weizman and Paulo Tavares. The video potraits the contemporary forensic investigations of the civil war in Guatemala, the process of identifying forcably disappeared and the spatial reconstruction of the genocide against the indigenous population in the Guatemalan highlands. The first video “The Mineral Geology of Genocide” was first shown at Portikus gallery in Frankfurt a.M. in the exhibition “Mengele’s skull” and then exhibited at the 2012 Taipei Biennial. In addition a different version but part of the same research project and video series was exhibited at the Herzliya Museum for Contemporary Art in Tel Aviv in the show “Cabinet of Wonder”
Periskop
(2011)
Immune Landscapes
(2012)
This research and documentary project investigates how ‘immunity’ as a legal category is applied to space. The video “Immune Landscapes 1″ presents an environment that is legally defined as immune in the Registry of Special Protection in the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict. The site of protection is a backup archive or ‘central refuge’ for state archives, which had been installed in a former silver mine in the Black Forest in South Germany in the 1960s. Its environment seemed to serve as an ideal backdrop, reiterating romantic tropes in the realm of planning protection. Here landscape doubles as a medium of preventive reason and an index of absence. The video was exhibited at Departure Foundation London and Redoubt Museum Eastbourne.

World Heritage Today is a comprehensive collection of articles written by young heritage specialists on topics related to the interpretation, conservation, and development of World Heritage Sites. It reflects current trends in heritage research and combines theory with the praxis of heritage preservation and management by offering several case studies from all over the globe: from the Speyer Cathedral and the Old Town of Regensburg in Germany, to the Australian Convict Sites and the Historic Center of São Luis in Brazil.
The dynamic and diverse character of this book is expressed in the variety of themes and approaches and in the authors’ countries of origin, which include Brazil, Germany, Iran, and Ukraine. Focusing on the special features and needs of sites inscribed in UNESCO’s World Heritage List, World Heritage Today investigates issues concerning the management and conservation of these sites, discusses benefits and limitations of the World Heritage status and signalizes future changes in the application of the 1972 World Heritage Convention.

Living Death Camps describes the condition of two former concentration camps located in the territory of ex-Yugoslavia: the World War II-era camp of Staro Sajmište, and the camp of Omarska, dating from the Yugoslav war. Both are presently inhabited and used for other purposes.
Living Death Camps names a collaborative project that seeks to investigate the complex material and political issues currently unfolding around these two sites, and to understand how the politics of commemoration in which each of them is embroiled.
Each of these sites has a complex and singular history, which we have undertaken to expose in our research. It is by addressing the specificity of each site that we sought to understand and intervene in the respective transformation of each site into a post-conflict site of commemoration. Starting from the acknowledgment that these two former death camps are presently inhabited and used, that they are places upon which the lives of many depend, we argue that it is a necessity for each of these sites to develop a project of commemoration that would remain responsive to the demands of ongoing life.
In an attempt to engage with this necessity and the difficult questions surrounding it, our research has turned to some of the methods of contemporary archaeology. Our forensics have surveyed and explored the multiplicity of events registered in the materiality of each site, without an a priori focus on the historical layer that the death camp has left behind. The material entanglement of historical layers in each site forms the ground upon which a call for a simultaneous attention to its present and pasts can be made.
An inverted symmetry emerges from the research we have conducted in each of the two sites. While in both our research culminated in the assembly of a public forum, in Staro Sajmište we opposed plans for commemoration that involved the eviction of its current residents, while in Omarska we demanded that the local community be granted the right to commemorate the tragic events that took place on the site – which is today occupied by a commercial mine in operation.
Can The Sun Lie
(2013)
DISPUTED SUNSET
“Can the sun lie?” asked a US court in 1886 when reflecting upon the truth claims of photographic evidence. However, as photographic practices became more commonplace and awareness of the ease of image manipulation increased, so too did doubts about their evidentiary value. Soon, photographic experts began to face each other in court and a new order of certainty appeared, produced by the domain of expertise.
In the Canadian Arctic the sun is setting many kilometers further west along the horizon and the stars are no longer where they should be. Sunlight is behaving differently in this part of the world as the warming Arctic air causes temperature inversions and throws the setting sun off-kilter. The longstanding dispute between lay knowledge and scientific expertise is forcefully reanimated by current climate change debates, particularly with respect to indigenous storytelling traditions. This is a reordering of expertise and its claims to truth that turn on the evidence proffered by nature itself.

Environmental violence and genocide in the Ixil Triangle
The violence inflicted by Guatemalan state security forces — both military and military-organized civil militias — on the Ixil Maya people in the El Quiché region of West Guatemala (1978–84) amounted, according to Guatemala’s Commission for Historical Clarification (CEH) to “acts of genocide.” But genocide is not only the killing of people, for it also includes “environmental violence”: the destruction of the natural and built environment as part of a military strategy.
The investigation attempts to read the environment not just as the location of conflict, but as the means by which it unfolds. This research formed a report produced on behalf of the prosecution in the case of genocide committed against the Ixil people. Our research was included in a series of trials taking place in Guatemala, including the retrial of former dictator Efraín Ríos Montt in the National Court of Guatemala and in the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

Forensic Architecture undertook detailed case study analyses of five specific drone strikes. These have been created from the perspectives of survivors and on-site witnesses, as well as those that visited the aftermath of the strikes. The aim was to describe, in as detailed a manner as possible, the effects of these strikes on the ground, on architecture, and on the people within them. Each of our investigations is paradigmatic of a different way of working with scarce data. In each case we cross-referenced the different types of data available to us, including satellite imagery, local and international media reports, witness statements, and on-the- ground images when and if we could obtain them. Through these analyses we were able to demonstrate that, despite all inhibiting circumstances, investigating specific drone strikes is in fact possible. Crucially, by using a different methodology in each case study and demonstrating how these innovative ways of analysis may be carried out even when confronted with limited information and research materials, our work may help other investigators working on drone warfare.

Material Witness
(2014)
Material Witness is an experimental documentary that examines a series of media artifacts to have emerged out of situations of contemporary conflict and historical violence. Consisting of five episodes (two of which are presented here), the video tracks these media materials through the various public and legal forums in which they participate as corroborative or disputed forms of “evidence” such as the ICTY, the un, the international atomic energy agency, and COP 15 (the 2009 un Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen). rather than focusing entirely upon the content of such media, as might be expected, the project also explores the ways in which crisis is registered as a “material violation” itself; in other words how histories are materially or computationally encoded by media and by which means the complex political realities they are embedded in are rendered visible. in short, it is an inquiry into how objects become agents of contestation between different stake- holders and truth claims.
