The modelling of the bone dynamics leads to an index-3 DAE, which we discretize by higher order collocation methods. Furthermore, we present an elastomechanical contact knee joint model of the articular cartilage. For the solution of the contact problem we develop an efficient multigrid solver, based on an Augmented-Lagrangian relaxation of the contact constraints. We formulate the identification of joint forces and resulting stresses with respect to different knee joint models as an inverse problem based on medical gait data. As with the isosurface, however, the fiber surface suffers from visual occlusion. We propose to avoid such occlusion by restricting the components to only the relevant ones with a new component-wise flexing algorithm. The approach, flexible fiber surface, generalizes the manipulation idea found in the flexible isosurface for the fiber surface. The flexible isosurface in the original form, however, relies on the contour tree. For the fiber surface, this corresponds to the Reeb space, which is challenging for both the computation and user interaction. We thus take a Reeb-free approach, in which one does not compute the Reeb space. Under this constraint, we generalize a few selected interactions in the flexible isosurface and discuss the implication of the restriction. In particular, we consider a physical model that describes the vibration modes and frequencies of a surface through the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the Hessian of a deformation energy, and we derive a closed form representation for the Hessian (at the rest state of the energy) for a general class of deformation energies. Furthermore, we design a quadratic energy, such that the eigenmodes of the Hessian of this energy are sensitive to the extrinsic curvature of the surface. Based on these spectra and eigenmodes, we derive two shape signatures. One that measures the similarity of points on a surface, and another that can be used to identify features of the surface. In addition, we discuss a spectral quadrangulation scheme for surfaces. Solving stochastic mixed-integer nonlinear constraint programs T2 - MATHEON - Mathematics for Key Technologies N2 - Natural gas is one of the most important energy sources in Germany and Europe. In recent years, political regulations have led to a strict separation of gas trading and gas transport, thereby assigning a central role in energy politics to the transportation and distribution of gas. These newly imposed political requirements influenced the technical processes of gas transport in such a way that the complex task of planning and operating gas networks has become even more intricate. Mathematically, the combination of discrete decisions on the configuration of a gas transport network, the nonlinear equations describing the physics of gas, and the uncertainty in demand and supply yield large-scale and highly complex stochastic mixed-integer nonlinear optimization problems. The Matheon project "Optimization of Gas Transport" takes the key role of making available the necessary core technology to solve the mathematical optimization problems which model the topology planning and the operation of gas networks. An important aspect of the academic impact is the free availability of our framework. In this paper we study branching strategies for mixed-integer programs that exploit the knowledge of multiple alternative optimal solutions (a cloud) of the current LP relaxation. These strategies naturally extend state-of-the-art methods like strong branching, pseudocost branching, and their hybrids. We show that by exploiting dual degeneracy, and thus multiple alternative optimal solutions, it is possible to enhance traditional methods. We present preliminary computational results, applying the newly proposed strategy to full strong branching, which is known to be the MIP branching rule leading to the fewest number of search nodes. It turns out that cloud branching can reduce the mean running time by up to 30% on standard test sets. The advantage of this approach is that we can utilize the full power of advanced MIP and CP technologies. In particular, this addresses the linear relaxation and the discrete components of the problem. For relaxation, we use an outer approximation generated by linearization of convex constraints and linear underestimation of nonconvex constraints. Further, we give an overview of the reformulation, separation, and propagation techniques that are used to handle the quadratic constraints efficiently. We implemented these methods in the branch-cut-and-price framework SCIP. Computational experiments indicates the potential of the approach. Y1 - 2010 SP - 371 EP - 376 PB - Springer ER - TY - GEN A1 - Weiser, Martin T1 - Delayed Residual Compensation for Bidomain Equations T2 - AIP Conference Proceedings N2 - The biodomain model of cardioelectric excitation consists of a reaction‐diffusion equation, an elliptic algebraic constraint, and a set of pointwise ODEs. Fast reaction enforces small time steps, such that for common mesh sizes the reaction‐diffusion equation is easily solved implicitly due to a dominating mass matrix. In contrast, the elliptic constraint does not benefit from small time steps and requires a comparably expensive solution. We propose a delayed residual compensation that improves the solution of the elliptic constraint and thus alleviates the need for long iteration times. Heating the surface of the structure under test for a short period of time generates a non-stationary temperature distribution and thus a thermal contrast between the defect and the sound material. Due to measurement noise, preprocessing of the experimental data is necessary, before reconstruction algorithms can be applied. We propose a decomposition of the measured temperature into Green's function solutions to eliminate noise. Y1 - 2012 ER - TY - GEN A1 - Schiela, Anton A1 - Weiser, Martin ED - Diehl, M. We derive basic results, which lay the groundwork for the computation of optimal solutions via an interior point path-following method. Further, we report on a numerical implementation of such a method and its performance at an example problem. After stating an optimization algorithm in the function space of admissable morph generating velocity fields, two innovative aspects in this framework are presented and numerically investigated: First, we spatially discretize the velocity field with conforming adaptive finite elements and discuss advantages of this new approach. Second, we directly compute the temporal evolution of discrete $m$-current attributes. Issues such as problem formulation, assembly and adaptivity are discussed at the example of optimal control problems. Trajectory compression for parabolic optimization problems is considered as a case study.
