Starting point for the new development is the recent work on hierarchical finite element bases due to Yserentant (1986). It is shown that this approach permits a flexible balance between iterative solver, local error estimator, and local mesh refinement device - which are the main components of an adaptive PDE code. Without use of standard multigrid techniques, the same kind of computational complexity is achieved - independent of any uniformity restrictions on the applied meshes. In addition, the method is extremely simple and all computations are purely local - making the method particularly attractive in view of parallel computing. The algorithmic approach is illustrated by a well-known critical test problem. {\bf Keywords:} finite elements, hierarchical basis, adaptive mesh refinement, preconditioned conjugate gradient methods.}, language = {en} } @article{AsamDeuflhardKaiser1968, author = {Asam, P. and Deuflhard, Peter and Kaiser, Wolfgang}, title = {Intensity Limiting and Stimulated Brillouin Scattering in Germanium}, series = {Physics Letters}, volume = {27 A}, journal = {Physics Letters}, pages = {78 -- 79}, year = {1968}, language = {en} } @article{NadobnyFaehlingHagmannetal.2002, author = {Nadobny, Johanna and F{\"a}hling, Horst and Hagmann, M. and Turner, P. and Wlodarczyk, Waldemar and Gellermann, Johanna and Deuflhard, Peter and Wust, Peter}, title = {Experimental and numerical investigation of feed-point parameters in a 3-D hyperthermia applicator using different FDTD models of feed networks}, series = {IEEE Trans Biomed Eng}, volume = {49}, journal = {IEEE Trans Biomed Eng}, number = {11}, pages = {1348 -- 1359}, year = {2002}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{DeuflhardFiedlerKunkel1987, author = {Deuflhard, Peter and Fiedler, B. and Kunkel, P.}, title = {Numerical Pathfollowing Beyond Critical Points in ODE Models}, series = {Large Scale Scientific Computing}, booktitle = {Large Scale Scientific Computing}, publisher = {Birkh{\"a}user/Boston}, pages = {97 -- 113}, year = {1987}, language = {en} } @article{DeuflhardPeschRentrop1976, author = {Deuflhard, Peter and Pesch, H.-J. and Rentrop, P.}, title = {A Modified Continuation Method for the Numerical Solution of Nonlinear Two-Point Boundary Value Problems by Shooting Techniques}, series = {Numer.
