A mathematical model which includes important components such as undiagnosed infectious, diagnosed infectious, latently infected and lost-sight infectious is formulated. The model combines a frequency dependent and a density dependent force of infection for TB transmission. Through optimal control theory and numerical simulations, a cost-effective balance of two different intervention methods is obtained. Seeking to minimize the amount of money the government spends when tuberculosis remain endemic in the Cameroonian population, Pontryagin's maximum principle is used to characterize the optimal control. The optimality system is derived and solved numerically using the forward-backward sweep method (FBSM). Results provide a framework for designing cost-effective strategies for diseases with multiple intervention methods. It comes out that combining chemoprophylaxis and education, the burden of TB can be reduced by 80 \% in 10 years.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{BoethDudaHinzmannetal.2015, author = {Boeth, Heide and Duda, Georg and Hinzmann, Daniel and Taylor, William R. and Ehrig, Rainald and Witaschek, Tom and Buttgereit, Frank}, title = {Objektive Quantifizierung der Morgensteifigkeit als Parameter f{\"u}r rheumatoide Arthritis im Metacarpophalangealgelenk}, booktitle = {9. The challenge of PAEON is to provide specialists in reproduc- tive medicine with a computerised model of the menstrual cycle under normal and various pathological conditions, which will allow them to get further in- sight in fertility dynamics. This model also enables the simulation of treatment protocols, which were used within in vitro fertilization. By the definition of virtual patients through biologically admissible parametrizations our approach allows not only the evaluation of a given treatment strategy in silico, but also the design and optimization of such protocols. Once a protocol is formalized in the virtual hospital, the success can be controlled by a treatment execution monitor, which works then as a clinical decision support system. All these tools will be combined in a virtual hospital environment, enabling the access to the PAEON services through the web.}, language = {en} } @misc{StoetzelEhrigBoeretal.2016, author = {St{\"o}tzel, Claudia and Ehrig, Rainald and Boer, H. Aerosol formation can impact severely the separation efficiency of gas cleaning processes. Aerosol or fog formation can arise by spontaneous condensation or desublimation in supersaturated gas phases. The rigorous description of the mass and energy transfer between the gas phase, the liquid phase, and the growing aerosol droplets leads to a system of partial differential and algebraic equations. For the solution of these systems we have developed the plant simulation tool AerCoDe. This program bases upon the linearly--implicit Euler discretisation, which in combination with extrapolation permits an adaptive step size and order control. Typical simulation results of a multistage industrial flue gas scrubbing process are presented. This lack of individual quantification limits both personalized medication and efficacy evaluation in the treatment of RA. Methods We have developed a novel technology to assess passive resistance of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) III joint (stiffness) and its Passive Range of Motion (PRoM). Within this pilot study, nineteen female postmenopausal RA patients and nine healthy controls were examined in the evening as well as in the morning of the following day. To verify the specificity of the biomechanical quantification, eleven patients with RA were assessed both prior to and ∼3 h after glucocorticoid therapy. Results While the healthy controls showed only minor changes between afternoon and morning, in RA patients mean±SD PRoM decreased significantly by 18 ± 22\% and stiffness increased significantly by 20 ± 18\% in the morning compared with the previous afternoon. We found a significant positive correlation between RA activity and biomechanical measures. Glucocorticoids significantly increased mean PRoM by 16 ± 11\% and reduced mean stiffness by 23 ± 22\%. Conclusion This technology allowed mechanical stiffness to be quantified in MCP joints, and has demonstrated high sensitivity in respect to disease status as well as medication effect in RA patients. Such non-invasive, low risk, and rapid assessment of biomechanical joint stiffness opens a novel avenue for judging therapy efficacy in patients with RA, and potentially also in other non-RA inflammatory joint diseases.}, language = {en} } @article{OehmeMoewisBoethetal.2024, author = {Oehme, Stephan and Moewis, Philippe and Boeth, Heide and Bartek, Benjamin and von Tycowicz, Christoph and Ehrig, Rainald and Duda, Georg and Jung, Tobias}, title = {Altered knee kinematics after posterior cruciate single-bundle reconstruction - a comprehensive prospective biomechanical in vivo analysis}, volume = {12}, journal = {Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology}, doi = {10.3389/fbioe.2024.1322136}, year = {2024}, language = {en} } @article{OehmeMoewisBoethetal.2022, author = {Oehme, Stephan and Moewis, Philippe and Boeth, Heide and Bartek, Benjamin and Lippert, Annika and von Tycowicz, Christoph and Ehrig, Rainald and Duda, Georg and Jung, Tobias}, title = {PCL insufficient patients with increased translational and rotational passive knee joint laxity have no increased range of anterior-posterior and rotational tibiofemoral motion during level walking}, volume = {12}, journal = {Scientific Reports}, number = {1}, doi = {10.1038/s41598-022-17328-3}, pages = {1 -- 11}, year = {2022}, language = {en} }
