Entity disambiguation is the task of mapping ambiguous terms in natural-language text to its entities in a knowledge base. It finds its application in the extraction of structured data in RDF (Resource Description Framework) from textual documents, but equally so in facilitating artificial intelligence applications, such as Semantic Search, Reasoning and Question & Answering. We propose a new collective, graph-based disambiguation algorithm utilizing semantic entity and document embeddings for robust entity disambiguation. Robust thereby refers to the property of achieving better than state-of-the-art results over a wide range of very different data sets. Our approach is also able to abstain if no appropriate entity can be found for a specific surface form. Our evaluation shows, that our approach achieves significantly (>5%) better results than all other publicly available disambiguation algorithms on 7 of 9 datasets without data set specific tuning. Moreover, we discuss the influence of the quality of the knowledge base on the disambiguation accuracy and indicate that our algorithm achieves better results than non-publicly available state-of-the-art algorithms.
DoSeR - A Knowledge-Base-Agnostic Framework for Entity Disambiguation Using Semantic Embeddings
(2016)
Entity disambiguation is the task of mapping ambiguous terms in natural-language text to its entities in a knowledge base. It finds its application in the extraction of structured data in RDF (Resource Description Framework) from textual documents, but equally so in facilitating artificial intelligence applications, such as Semantic Search, Reasoning and Question & Answering. In this work, we propose DoSeR (Disambiguation of Semantic Resources), a (named) entity disambiguation framework that is knowledge-base-agnostic in terms of RDF (e.g. DBpedia) and entity-annotated document knowledge bases (e.g. Wikipedia). Initially, our framework automatically generates semantic entity embeddings given one or multiple knowledge bases. In the following, DoSeR accepts documents with a given set of surface forms as input and collectively links them to an entity in a knowledge base with a graph-based approach. We evaluate DoSeR on seven different data sets against publicly available, state-of-the-art (named) entity disambiguation frameworks. Our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches that make use of RDF knowledge bases and/or entity-annotated document knowledge bases by up to 10% F1 measure.
Entity Linking is the task of mapping terms in arbitrary documents to entities in a knowledge base by identifying the correct semantic meaning. It is applied in the extraction of structured data in RDF (Resource Description Framework) from textual documents, but equally so in facilitating artificial intelligence applications, such as Semantic Search, Reasoning and Question and Answering. Most existing Entity Linking systems were optimized for specific domains (e.g., general domain, biomedical domain), knowledge base types (e.g., DBpedia, Wikipedia), or document structures (e.g., tables) and types (e.g., news articles, tweets). This led to very specialized systems that lack robustness and are only applicable for very specific tasks. In this regard, this work focuses on the research and development of a robust Entity Linking system in terms of domains, knowledge base types, and document structures and types.
To create a robust Entity Linking system, we first analyze the following three crucial components of an Entity Linking algorithm in terms of robustness criteria: (i) the underlying knowledge base, (ii) the entity relatedness measure, and (iii) the textual context matching technique. Based on the analyzed components, our scientific contributions are three-fold. First, we show that a federated approach leveraging knowledge from various knowledge base types can significantly improve robustness in Entity Linking systems. Second, we propose a new state-of-the-art, robust entity relatedness measure for topical coherence computation based on semantic entity embeddings. Third, we present the neural-network-based approach Doc2Vec as a textual context matching technique for robust Entity Linking.
Based on our previous findings and outcomes, our main contribution in this work is DoSeR (Disambiguation of Semantic Resources). DoSeR is a robust, knowledge-base-agnostic Entity Linking framework that extracts relevant entity information from multiple knowledge bases in a fully automatic way. The integrated algorithm represents a collective, graph-based approach that utilizes semantic entity and document embeddings for entity relatedness and textual context matching computation. Our evaluation shows, that DoSeR achieves state-of-the-art results over a wide range of different document structures (e.g., tables), document types (e.g., news documents) and domains (e.g., general domain, biomedical domain). In this context, DoSeR outperforms all other (publicly available) Entity Linking algorithms on most data sets.
The well-founded semantics has been accepted as the most relevant semantics for logic-based information systems. In this dissertation a framework based on a set of program transformations is presented that generalizes all major computation approaches for the well-founded semantics using a common data structure and provides a common language to describe their evaluation strategy. This rewriting system gives the formal background to analyze and combine different evaluation strategies in a common framework, or to design new algorithms and prove the correctness of its implementations at a high level just by changing the order of program transformations.
Der Wald des Mittelalters
(2019)
Data has become a necessary resource for firm operations in the modern digital world, explaining their growing data gathering efforts. Due to this development, consumers are confronted with decisions to disclose personal data on a daily basis, and have become increasingly intentional about data sharing. While this reluctance to disclose personal data poses challenges for firms, at the same time, it also creates new opportunities for improving privacy-related interactions with customers. This dissertation advocates for a more holistic perspective on consumers’ privacy-related decision-making and introduces the consumer privacy journey consisting of three subsequent phases: pre data disclosure, data disclosure, post data disclosure. In three independent essays, I stress the importance of investigating data requests (i.e., the first step of this journey) as they represent a largely neglected, yet, potentially powerful means to influence consumers’ decision-making and decision-evaluation processes. Based on dual-processing models of decision-making, this dissertation focuses on both consumers’ cognitive and affective evaluations of privacy-related information: First, Essay 1 offers novel conceptualizations and operationalizations of consumers’ perceived behavioral control over personal data (i.e., cognitive processing) in the context of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based data disclosure processes. Next, Essay 2 examines consumers’ cognitive and affective processing of a data request that entails relevance arguments as well as relevance-illustrating game elements. Finally, Essay 3 categorizes affective cues that trigger consumers’ affective processing of a data request and proposes that such cues need to fit with a specific data disclosure situation to foster long-term decision satisfaction. Collectively, my findings provide research and practice with new insights into consumers’ privacy perceptions and behaviors, which are particularly valuable in the context of complex, new (technology-enabled) data disclosure situations.

Governments around the world currently focus on shaping the digital economy. Particular attention is paid to Internet platforms, Internet infrastructure and data as essential components of the digital economy. The three studies in this thesis contribute to the understanding of the behavior of firms in each of these domains and derive insights for future regulations and business projects.
The first study deals with the ranking of content on Internet platforms and how it affects the incentives of content providers to invest in content quality. The focus of the study is on sponsored ranking and organic ranking, but the case that a vertically integrated content provider is favored by an Internet platform is also taken into account. Using a game theoretic model, it is shown that there is no ranking design that strictly leads to more investment compared to the other designs. It is also shown that the Internet platform usually chooses the type of ranking that, from the perspective of the Internet platform and consumers, yields the best expected overall content quality. The second study deals with the incentive of Internet service providers to throttle specific Internet content. The key finding is that Internet service providers use this instrument to utilize the capacity of their telecommunications network more efficiently. This leads not only to more benefits for Internet users, but also to a higher incentive to invest in network capacity due to better monetization. The third study examines the circumstances under which firms are willing to share data with other firms. By means of an economic laboratory experiment, it is shown that more data is shared if the firms have control over who exactly they share data with. Thus, for example, data pools that grant unrestricted data access to all participating firms can be expected to perform worse than data pools that give their participating firms control over with whom their uploaded data is shared. In addition, the third study finds that established relationships are characterized by more data sharing and less volatility in the amount of shared data than new relationships. The study concludes that data sharing projects should not be expected to work optimally right away.
In summary, the studies in this thesis identify a number of costs that may arise when digital firms' choice is restricted by regulation or design. The ability of Internet service providers to throttle certain content and the ability of Internet platforms to choose the ranking design are usually used in the best interests of consumers. Data sharing also works best when firms are free to decide who gets their data.
While in some Eastern European countries a wave of colored revolutions challenged existing political orders, Belarus has remained largely untouched by mass protests. In Minsk, the diffusion of democratic ideas leading to the mobilization of population meets a stable authoritarian regime. Nevertheless, the stagnating democratization process cannot be only attributed to the strong authoritarian rule and abuse of power. Indeed, Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko still enjoys popularity by a large part of the population. Although international observers report that elections in Belarus have never been free and fair, few commentators doubt that Lukashenko would not have won in democratic elections. This evidence suggests that the regime succeeded in building a strong legitimizing basis, which has not been seriously challenged during the last two decades. This paper explores the authoritarian stability in Belarus by looking at the patterns of state ideology. The government effectively spreads state ideology since the early 2000s. Ideology departments have been created in almost all state institutions. The education sector has been affected by the introduction of the compulsory course "The Fundamentals of Belarusian State Ideology" at all universities, and increasing attention to the patriotic education at schools. Based on document analysis, I trace the creation of "ideological vertical" in Belarus and focuse on the issue of ideology in education and youth policy sectors.
This cumulative thesis consists of six single contributions: five independent essays and an introductory chapter. All of the conributions have been published or accepted for publication. The overarching scope of these essays is to analyze different factors accounting for the stability of post-Soviet authoritarian regimes and the obstacles, which Western democracy promoters can face when dealing with autocrats. The starting point for these enquiries has been the striking inability of Western democracies and in particular of the European Union to encourage and to assist political transformation in the majority of the post-Soviet republics.
Commutative Gröbner bases have a lot of applications in theory and practice, because they have many nice properties, they are computable, and there exist many efficient improvements of their computations. Non-commutative Gröbner bases also have many useful properties. However, applications of non-commutative Gröbner bases are rarely considered due to high complexity of computations. The purpose of this study was to improve the computation of non-commutative Gröbner bases and investigate the applications of non-commutative Gröbner bases. Gröbner basis theory in free monoid rings was carefully revised and Gröbner bases were precisely characterized in great detail. For the computations of Gröbner bases, the Buchberger Procedure was formulated. Three methods, say interreduction on obstructions, Gebauer-Möller criteria, and detecting redundant generators, were developed for efficiently improving the Buchberger Procedure. Further, the same approach was applied to study Gröbner basis theory in free bimodules over free monoid rings. The Buchberger Procedure was also formulated and improved in this setting. Moreover, J.-C. Faugere's F4 algorithm was generalized to this setting. Finally, many meaningful applications of non-commutative Gröbner bases were developed. Enumerating procedures were proposed to semi-decide some interesting undecidable problems. All the examples in the thesis were computed using the package gbmr of the computer algebra system ApCoCoA. The package was developed by the author. It contains dozens of functions for Gröbner basis computations and many concrete applications. The package gbmr and a collection of interesting examples are available at http://www.apcocoa.org/.
This thesis investigates the suitability of state-of-the-art protocols for large-scale and long-term environmental event monitoring using wireless sensor networks based on the application scenario of early forest fire detection. By suitable combination of energy-efficient protocol mechanisms a novel communication protocol, referred to as cross-layer message-merging protocol (XLMMP), is developed. Qualitative and quantitative protocol analyses are carried out to confirm that XLMMP is particularly suitable for this application area. The quantitative analysis is mainly based on finite-source retrial queues with multiple unreliable servers. While this queueing model is widely applicable in various research areas even beyond communication networks, this thesis is the first to determine the distribution of the response time in this model. The model evaluation is mainly carried out using Markovian analysis and the method of phases. The obtained quantitative results show that XLMMP is a feasible basis to design scalable wireless sensor networks that (1) may comprise hundreds of thousands of tiny sensor nodes with reduced node complexity, (2) are suitable to monitor an area of tens of square kilometers, (3) achieve a lifetime of several years. The deduced quantifiable relationships between key network parameters — e.g., node size, node density, size of the monitored area, aspired lifetime, and the maximum end-to-end communication delay — enable application-specific optimization of the protocol.
Data management is a cornerstone for any kind of information system - including the aerospace and aviation sector. In contrast to conventional domains, software development in the avionics domain must adhere to a legally binding certification process, called qualification. The success of the process depends on compliance with international standards, such as DO-178: Software Considerations in Airborne Systems and Equipment Certification. From a software developer's perspective, challenges arise in terms of methods and tools. Techniques that have a potential impact on the deterministic and predictable execution of avionics software are prohibited.
The objective of this thesis' research is to develop a scalable method to realize data-management for multi-variant avionics software under the restrictions and constraints of the domain. Since avionics software faces very long-term life-cycles (up to 75 years), a particular focus is being placed on maintenance and evolution. Based on the insights gained in a semi-structured interview at Airbus Helicopters, industrial established approaches to implement qualified avionics software are assessed at first and compared with respect to strengths and weaknesses for data-management afterwards. As a result, a novel development approach is proposed, combining model-based techniques and product-line technology to derive the source code of highly specific data-management variants, as well as the majority of assets required for the qualification process, from a declarative system specification.
In order to demonstrate the practicability of the approach in industry, a framework is presented that is deployed and applied at Airbus Helicopters to generate qualifiable data-management components for the variants of the NH90 helicopter. The maintainability is shown by means of a domain-specific optimization, in which the model-based and generative approach is used to establish safe memory overlays at compile-time. Key findings reveal a substantially reduced memory footprint (29,1% in case of a real-world scenario), as well as an significantly facilitated implementation process, which would not be accomplishable using conventional methods for software development in the avionics domain.
Das Sprachsystem der Naxi
(2016)
Data is an important competitive resource in digital online markets. As a result, the access and availability of data can be the basis for a competitive advantage. This thesis analyzes the role and competitive effects of data in digital markets and contributes to an improved understanding of data as a (potential) basis for market power. Thereby, the thesis also contributes to the ongoing policy debate on how to safeguard a fair and open competitive environment for internet-based digital (i.e., online) services as well as traditional services.
In doing so, Study 1 surveys the literature and discusses (i) the challenges that are associated with assessing market power in digital markets, (ii) the challenges in creating a level playing field in digital markets, e.g., by harmonizing regulatory obligations for online and offline services, and (iii) the vital role of data and data protection in the context of data-driven business models. Study 2 and Study 3 focus on the competitive effects of transferring data between online competitors. The study on social logins (Study 2) highlights the strategic effects as well as welfare implications if competing online services deliberately and voluntarily decide to share user and usage data. Whereas Study 2 abstracts from the user’s decision how much data to provide to an online service, Study 3 focuses on the amount of data that firms require for their services and that is provided by users. In particular, Study 3 investigates the competitive and welfare effects of a new fundamental consumer right: The right to data portability. This right is part of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which becomes effective in May 2018 for all online services available to users in the European Union and allows users to transfer their personal data from one online service to another (competing) online service (c.f., GDPR Article 20). In this context, the study examines the firms’ strategic reactions to the introduction of such a right and identifies the ensuing market outcomes as well as policy and managerial implications.
In conclusion, this doctoral thesis contributes to an improved understanding of (i) the competitive effects that arise from data as an economic good or valuable asset for digital services, and (ii) the aspects that may constitute market power in digital markets. Moreover, from a policy perspective, the thesis can be understood as a theoretically founded research project that (i) informs which market failures may arise in the context of digital (data-driven) markets and that (ii) highlights the peculiarities that need to be considered to define appropriate legal requirements in order to establish a level playing field between online services and traditional (established) services, but also between competing online services. Therefore, the thesis also contributes to the discussion on whether and how dominant online platforms should and can be regulated.
Contributing to the still scarce European evidence this thesis examines in detail different aspects of equity styles and systematic liquidity in Europe and their role with respect to European stocks and mutual funds. First, a consistent set of European style indices is outlined from which risk factors like market excess return, size, valuation and momentum, but also novel idiosyncratic risk and systematic liquidity factors are derived. The daily 2002 to 2009 time period examined contains the recent financial crisis. As based on a stochastic discount factor GMM based analysis, liquidity is found to help to price European stocks and a decrease in common liquidity during the recent period of market stress reveals the role of liquidity as a state variable of hedging concern to investors. Moreover, the risk factors including liquidity and idiosyncratic risk are found to be relevant in mutual fund performance evaluation as indicated by significant risk exposures of a set of mutual funds with European investment focus. However, regarding different models the risk-adjusted net performance of these funds is mainly found to be indistinguishable from zero, being in line with equilibrium models of fund performance. Furthermore, the dynamic abilities of fund managers with respect to liquidity and risk factor timing are examined by conducting unconditional as well as time-varying analyses based on a Kalman filter approach. The results reveal dynamics in the risk exposures of mutual funds, but evidence on daily risk factor timing is weak with respect to established risk factors as well as liquidity. Finally, the evidence that both liquidity and idiosyncratic risk affect the cross-section of asset returns suggests that both risk factors capture different return characteristics. As motivated by models of price discovery processes, liquidity might capture transaction costs, while idiosyncratic risk seems to capture effects of price discovery.
Information has a particular importance in online purchase decision processes. As opposed to consumers in online markets, consumers in online markets cannot inspect the physical product to evaluate it and reduce their perceived risk. Hence, consumers in online markets are dependent upon the information that they can gather about a product in which they are interested. Therefore, they have two primary sources of information: Product descriptions and customer reviews. Both sources affect consumers’ purchase decision processes and hence have an economic impact for consumers, shop providers and manufacturers. It is important to know how these sources of information influence a customer’s online purchase decision and how to extract the relevant information.
To examine these research objectives, several studies applying different methodological approaches have been conducted. The results are presented in this dissertation.
Lehrer(innen) (gem)einsam?
(2011)
Innovate with Crowds. Co-Creation and Idea Evaluation in Internal and External Crowdsourcing.
(2020)
Crowdsourcing seems to be a promising approach for organizations to overcome challenges widely discussed in innovation and organizational research. However, the extent to which an organization can leverage the benefits from crowdsourcing is contingent on which type of crowd is addressed and how crowds are used. Based on unique data from crowdsourcing contests, the dissertation provides insights how to innovate with internal and external crowds in order to utilize their potential for co-creation and idea evaluation.
The capacity of a society to adapt and cope with disasters is generally discussed under the term resilience. It is a concept that entered vulnerability research recently and that will still need further theoretical underpinning and empirical grounding. The vulnerability context of urban poor can be approached from different angles, such as urbanism or development studies. My thesis has the aim to contribute to a better understanding of resilience within vulnerability research. I decided to follow recent approaches in vulnerability research for two reasons. First, integrated vulnerability concepts highlight the value of interdisciplinary approaches. Second, the integrated vulnerability discourse offers a analytical framework that can be modified and applied to the empirical study of vulnerability in Jakarta's kampungs. In chapter two I will introduce the theoretical embedding of the analytical framework. This will be necessary, as disaster research in social science is a relatively young research stream. Terms such as disasters, catastrophes and hazards are often used synonymously. Moreover, different definitions of vulnerability and resilience lead to diverse applications of the concepts. Thus, I would like to outline some aspects of disaster research in social science and present the definitions I will apply in this thesis. Moreover, at the end of chapter two, I will refine my research question and present the methodological framework I use for the analysis of my empirical data. The integrated vulnerability framework is pointing out the importance of the temporal and spatial scale in vulnerability analysis. In chapter three, I will therefore provide the temporal and spatial embedding of my research by presenting a historical perspective on Jakarta. Since it is not possible to present almost 500 years of city history in one chapter, I will concentrate on two aspects. The first focus will be put on the origin and development of Jakarta's kampungs. The second focus will be put on the flood situation. Accordingly, I will shortly present the different phases of Jakarta's history. In each phase I will point out the aspects relevant for kampungs and aspects that will be relevant in regards to the flood situation. Finally, I will conclude how the situation of the kampungs and its dwellers changed over time. In addition to that, I will discuss the historical development of flood risk in a separate section in order to contribute to a better understanding of recent flooding. Since the integrated vulnerability framework is a place based approach, I would like to introduce the theoretical discussion on urbanism and space in chapter four. I will show that the analytical value of the concept of slum in approaching the local level in Jakarta's kampungs is limited. I will also present the concept of informality as it is often discussed in the context of slums and urban poverty. Moreover, I will argue that informality is an integral part of megacities in developing countries and it reflects processes of self-organisation on a local level. Aspects of social organisations are, again, also important for a vulnerability analysis. I will then link the concepts of institutions and social capital in order to show how social organisation can be approached as a resource for communities. I will conclude the chapter with models of social space, particularly the concept of locality, that will provide a framework for structuring and analysing the empirical field data. In chapter five and six, I will leave the theoretical discussion and present the data I collected during my empirical research in two kampung. Chapter five will begin with a short introduction to the research approach and the methods I used in the research process. Then I will present the field data following the structure provided by the concept of locality which is basically referring to the categories of material space and social organisation. I will add two categories to this structure. In order to link the previous discussion on informality with the empirical research, I will present data on the informal-formal continuum in both research locations. In addition to this I will sum up my empirical findings on how people adapt to and cope with hazards, particularly flooding. I decided to separate description and analysis of my research findings because I would like to first provide a general understanding of the local situation in both research locations in a descriptive way before I analyse and interpret the data. Accordingly, I will analyse and interpret the data in chapter six. The main focus will be put on aspects of space and social organisation so that local communities can be conceptualised. In chapter seven I will finally analyse aspects of vulnerability and resilience by applying the integrated vulnerability framework to my research findings. Lastly, I will briefly summarize the thesis in chapter eight and provide an outlook.
In this work we present novel query evaluation techniques for data integration systems in different environments, ranging from a central data-warehouse approach, over distributed virtual market places, to peer-to-peer (P2P) systems. Based on a new distributed evaluation technique, the so-called HyperQueries, we present a reference architecture for distributed virtual market places. These HyperQueries enable us to dynamically construct query evaluation plans by referencing sub-plans in the Internet. Furthermore, the process of data integration is structured. Subsequently, we investigate P2P data integration systems without central instances. We introduce so-called Super-Peers which structure a P2P network. Using this Super-Peer based network we "unroll" queries. This allows us to execute even user-defined operators nearby the data sources. Finally, we propose novel, efficient join algorithms for decision support queries in central data-warehouse systems. The proposed order-preserving hashjoins and generalized hashteams are based on early sorting and early partitioning of the inputs and can speed up the query evaluation up to orders of magnitutes.
The focus of this study is a single manuscript in a Tai Nuea village near Mueang Sing in northwestern Laos, copied in 1935 and entitled Pukthanusati (Pali buddhānussati) ‘the Recollection of the Buddha.’ It is written in the Tai Nuea language and Lik Tho Ngok or ‘Bean Sprout’ script, and is in the form of a jātaka or narrative story of a former lifetime of the Buddha, the most popular genre for recitation. The thesis examines the lay manuscript culture of which it is a part and the language and orthography of its contents, and then provide a phonemic transcription and annotated English translation of the text together a complete glossary of terms and images of the manuscript.
The detailed study of this one manuscript is used as an entry point for a broader investigation of Lik manuscript culture as found in Mueang Sing today, including the distinct roles of the Lik and Tham orthographies, scribal vocation, manuscript production, uses and functions, and the contents of the texts. The Pukthanusati text is then the basis for examination of phonological aspects of language use in the recitation of Lik manuscript literature and the historical context of the dialect’s phonemes as well as Burmese and Indic forms occurring as loanwords. The Lik Tho Ngok orthography is also placed in context through an overview of its historical development, including possible prototypes and phonological influences, the twentieth century reforms of some traditional orthographies and the question of orthographic depth. The Lik Tho Ngok orthography as found in the manuscript studied is then described in detail, with tables and accompanying notes illustrating the inventories of consonant and vowel glyphs, consonant clusters, ligatures and special orthographic forms, use of subscripts and superscripts, numerals, punctuation, and the Tai Nuea spelling system. The phonemic transcription and annotated English translation of the text illustrate the rhyming structure and other features of specialised language use in Lik manuscript culture.
The Tai Nuea and a number of closely related Tai groups have generally been overlooked in the field of Buddhist Studies. The study of this manuscript culture therefore contributes to our understanding of local practices on the northern periphery of Theravāda Buddhist influence in mainland Southeast Asia in addition to responding to an urgent need to examine and document this endangered scribal tradition and it specialised use of language and orthography.
Software model checking is a successful technique for automated program verification. Several of the most widely used approaches for software model checking are based on solving first-order-logic formulas over predicates using SMT solvers, e.g., predicate abstraction, bounded model checking, k-induction, and lazy abstraction with interpolants. We define a configurable framework for predicate-based analyses that allows expressing each of these approaches. This unifying framework highlights the differences between the approaches, producing new insights, and facilitates research of further algorithms and their combinations, as witnessed by several research projects that have been conducted on top of this framework. In addition to this theoretical contribution, we provide a mature implementation of our framework in the software verifier that allows applying all of the mentioned approaches to practice. This implementation is used by other research groups, e.g., to find bugs in the Linux kernel, and has proven its competitiveness by winning gold medals in the International Competition on Software Verification.
Tools and approaches for software model checking like our predicate analysis are typically evaluated using performance benchmarking on large sets of verification tasks. We have identified several pitfalls that can silently arise during benchmarking, and we have found that the benchmarking techniques and tools that are used by many researchers do not guarantee valid results in practice, but may produce arbitrarily large measurement errors. Furthermore, certain hardware characteristics can also have nondeterministic influence on the measurements. In order to being able to properly evaluate our framework for software verification, we study the effects of these hardware characteristics, and define a list of the most important requirements that need to be ensured for reliable benchmarking. We present as solution an open-source benchmarking framework BenchExec, which in contrast to other benchmarking tools fulfills all our requirements and aims at making reliable benchmarking easy. BenchExec was already adopted by several research groups and the International Competition on Software Verification.
Using the power of BenchExec we conduct an experimental evaluation of our unifying framework for predicate analysis. We study the effect of varying the SMT solver and the way program semantics are encoded in formulas across several verification algorithms and find that these technical choices can significantly influence the results of experimental studies of verification approaches. This is valuable information for both researchers who study verification approaches as well as for users who apply them in practice. Our comprehensive study of 120 different configurations would not have been possible without our highly flexible and configurable unifying framework for predicate analysis and shows that the latter is a valuable base for conducting experiments. Furthermore, we show using a comparison against top-ranking verifiers from the International Competition on Software Verification that our implementation is highly competitive and can outperform the state of the art.
Code injection attacks like the one used in the high-profile 2017 Equifax breach, have become increasingly common, ranking at the top of OWASP’s list of critical web application vulnerabilities. The injection attacks can also target embedded applications running on processors like ARM and Xtensa by exploiting memory bugs and maliciously altering the program’s behavior or even taking full control over a system. Especially, ARM’s support of low power consumption without sacrificing performance is leading the industry to shift towards ARM processors, which advances the attention of injection attacks as well.
In this thesis, we are considering web applications and embedded applications (running on ARM and Xtensa processors) as the target of injection attacks. To detect injection attacks in web applications, taint analysis is mostly proposed but the precision, scalability, and runtime overhead of the detection depend on the analysis types (e.g., static vs dynamic, sound vs unsound). Moreover, in the existing dynamic taint tracking approach for Java- based applications, even the most performant can impose a slowdown of at least 10–20% and often far more. On the other hand, considering the embedded applications, while some initial research has tried to detect injection attacks (i.e., ROP and JOP) on ARM, they suffer from high performance or storage overhead. Besides, the Xtensa has been neglected though used in most firmware-based embedded WiFi home automation devices.
This thesis aims to provide novel approaches to precisely detect injection attacks on both the web and embedded applications. To that end, we evaluate JavaScript static analysis frameworks to evaluate the security of a hybrid app (JS & native) from an industrial partner, provide RIVULET – a tool that precisely detects injection attacks in Java-based real-world applications, and investigate injection attacks detection on ARM and Xtensa platforms using hardware performance counters (HPCs) and machine learning (ML) techniques.
To evaluate the security of the hybrid application, we initially compare the precision, scalability, and code coverage of two widely-used static analysis frameworks—WALA and SAFE. The result of our comparison shows that SAFE provides higher precision and better code coverage at the cost of somewhat lower scalability. Based on these results, we analyze the data flows of the hybrid app via taint analysis by extending the SAFE’s taint analysis and detected a potential for injection attacks of the hybrid application.
Similarly, to detect injection attacks in Java-based applications, we provide Rivulet which monitors the execution of developer-written functional tests using dynamic taint tracking. Rivulet uses a white-box test generation technique to re-purpose those functional tests to check if any vulnerable flow could be exploited. We compared Rivulet to the state-of-the-art static vulnerability detector Julia on benchmarks and Rivulet outperformed Julia in both false positives and false negatives. We also used Rivulet to detect new vulnerabilities.
Moreover, for applications running on ARM and Xtensa platforms, we investigate ROP1 attack detection by combining HPCs and ML techniques. We collect data exploiting real- world vulnerable applications and small benchmarks to train the ML. For ROP attack detection on ARM, we also implement an online monitor which labels a program’s execution as benign or under attack and stops its execution once the latter is detected. Evaluating our ROP attack detection approach on ARM provides a detection accuracy of 92% for the offline training and 75% for the online monitoring. Similarly, our ROP attack detection on the firmware-only Xtensa processor provides an overall average detection accuracy of 79%.
Last but not least, this thesis shows how relevant taint analysis is to precisely detect injection attacks on web applications and the power of HPC combined with machine learning in the control flow injection attacks detection on ARM and Xtensa platforms.
The thesis proposes a new formal framework for checking the content of web documents along individual reading paths. It is vital for the readability of web documents that their content is consistent and coherent along the possible browsing paths through the document. Manually ensuring the coherence of content along the possibly huge number of different browsing paths in a web document is time-consuming and error-prone. Existing methods for document validation and verification are not sufficiently expressive and efficient. The innovative core idea of this thesis is to combine the temporal logic CTL and description logic ALC for the representation of consistency criteria. The resulting new temporal description logics ALCCTL can - in contrast to existing specification formalisms - compactly represent coherence criteria on documents. Verification of web documents is modelled as a model checking problem of ALCCTL. The decidability and polynomial complexity of the ALCCTL model checking problem is proven and a sound, complete, and optimal model checking algorithm is presented. Case studies on real and realistic web documents demonstrate the performance and adequacy of the proposed methods. Existing methods such as symbolic model checking or XML-based document validation are outperformed in both expressiveness and speed.
The collection of various texts on D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930) represents the English writer’s first journey abroad having led the young and receptive teacher - already deeply influenced by German philosophy - into Bavaria and the Tyrol. Vividly featured in his - during his lifetime unpublished - novel "Mr Noon" the stay in Germany and Bavaria in the years 1912 and 1913 and the people he met there were to be the plot of Lawrence’s main works. In Munich Lawrence and his later German wife Frieda von Richthofen (1879-1956) were part of the so-called Schwabing-Bohème. In these circles of artists, poets, social-reformes, as well as of heroines of free love, anarchists and early fascists the author received his ideas about sex and erotics, which were performed in his famous novel "Lady Chatterley’s Lover" in 1927/1928. Especially the impact of the Austrian Doctor Otto Gross (1877-1920), a former lover of Frieda Lawrence, who tried to connect Friedrich Nietzsche’s "Will to Power" and Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalysis, on Lawrence’s work is a remarkable criterion. The studies also follow Lawrence’s tracks into the Tyrol and his and Frieda’s wandering across the Alps to Northern Italy (1912-1913), an adventure playing the real setting of his novel "Women in Love" of 1920 and described in his essays "Twilight in Italy" (1916).
Thomas Bernhard and the air crash on Tettelham in 1944. "It was a spectacle of unrelieved tragedy".
(2012)
In his autobiographical essay "Ein Kind" (A Child) the Austrian writer Thomas Bernhard (1931-1998)describes the downing of a heavy World War II USAIRFORCE bomber at Tettelham near Traunstein in Upper Bavaria in 1944. The scene of the crash is now headed by a chapel and some reminiscenses of the crews' fate. Although the event is still vivid in the local history, it was not known that Thomas Bernhard had been a keen eyewitness.
The Nibelungenlied represents a real international setting of historic peoples: Burgundians, Saxons, Huns, Russians, Romanians and in one single line Petchenegs, a turktataric tribe of Nomads. In the 12th. and 13th.centuries Petchenegs served as borderline-warriors in the Kingdom of Hungary. Had the Compilator of the Nibelungenlied knowledge of their presence along the Hungarian Danube?
Landscapes and societies in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture in Southwest China have undergone unprecedented changes over the last 60 years. These transformations within the landscapes manifest themselves as land cover change, for example intensification of traditional land use systems and introduction of monocultures leading to deforestation, loss of biodiversity and other forms of environmental degradation. At the same time, communities and societies within these landscapes have experienced a certain degree of economic development, mainly through exploitation of natural resources. Through changing of political and economic frameworks, they have also profound transformations within their social and socio-cultural configurations. Based on the outcomes of field work in Xishuangbanna between 2006 and 2010, this study examines institutions, institutional voids and institutional change concerning land-use in the Naban River Watershed National Nature Reserve. Combining socio-economic and ecological data, patterns of land-use change and their interrelation to local communities are explored. With the emergence of the rubber-line, a socio-ecological frontier, disparities between upland and lowland landscapes and communities are intensifying.
Southeast Asia is one of the most dynamic regions in the world. This volume offers a timely approach to Southeast Asian Studies, covering recent transitions in the realms of urbanism, rural development, politics, and media. While most of the contributions deal with the era of post-independence, some tackle the colonial period and the resulting developments. The volume also includes insights from Southern India.
As a tribute to the interdisciplinary project of Southeast Asian Studies, this book brings together authors from disciplines as diverse as area studies, sociology, history, geography, and journalism.
Our internal clock, the circadian clock, determines at which time we have our best cognitive abilities, are physically strongest, and when we are tired. Circadian clock phase is influenced primarily through exposure to light. A direct pathway from the eyes to the suprachiasmatic nucleus, where the circadian clock resides, is used to synchronise the circadian clock to external light-dark cycles.
In modern society, with the ability to work anywhere at anytime and a full social agenda, many struggle to keep internal and external clocks synchronised. Living against our circadian clock makes us less efficient and poses serious health impact, especially when exercised over a long period of time, e.g. in shift workers. Assessing circadian clock phase is a cumbersome and uncomfortable task. A common method, dim light melatonin onset testing, requires a series of eight saliva samples taken in hourly intervals while the subject stays in dim light condition from 5 hours before until 2 hours past their habitual bedtime.
At the same time, sensor-rich smartphones have become widely available and wearable computing is on the rise. The hypothesis of this thesis is that smartphones and wearables can be used to record sensor data to monitor human circadian rhythms in free-living. To test this hypothesis, we conducted research on specialised wearable hardware and smartphones to record relevant data, and developed algorithms to monitor circadian clock phase in free-living. We first introduce our smart eyeglasses concept, which can be personalised to the wearers head and 3D-printed. Furthermore, hardware was integrated into the eyewear to recognise typical activities of daily living (ADLs). A light sensor integrated into the eyeglasses bridge was used to detect screen use. In addition to wearables, we also investigate if sleep-wake patterns can be revealed from smartphone context information. We introduce novel methods to detect sleep opportunity, which incorporate expert knowledge to filter and fuse classifier outputs. Furthermore, we estimate light exposure from smartphone sensor and weather in- formation. We applied the Kronauer model to compare the phase shift resulting from head light measurements, wrist measurements, and smartphone estimations.
We found it was possible to monitor circadian phase shift from light estimation based on smartphone sensor and weather information with a weekly error of 32±17min, which outperformed wrist measurements in 11 out of 12 participants. Sleep could be detected from smartphone use with an onset error of 40±48 min and wake error of 42±57 min. Screen use could be detected smart eyeglasses with 0.9 ROC AUC for ambient light intensities below 200lux. Nine clusters of ADLs were distinguished using Gaussian mixture models with an average accuracy of 77%. In conclusion, a combination of the proposed smartphones and smart eyeglasses applications could support users in synchronising their circadian clock to the external clocks, thus living a healthier lifestyle.
Research on flipped classroom instruction has substantially advanced in the past ten years. Flipped classroom refers to an instructional approach in which students study educational videos at home and do homework assignments in class. Since an increasing number of teachers wants to adopt the flipped classroom approach in their practice, further research—particularly in the context of secondary education—is clearly required. The two presented studies in this thesis aimed at examining the effectiveness of flipped classroom instruction in secondary education by conducting a meta-analytic synthesis of prior studies and an intervention study with a methodologically new approach. Specifically, the studies investigated whether and under which conditions the flipped classroom approach has a positive impact on student achievement and which learners benefit most from a flipped or video-based classroom.
In the first study, meta-analytic methods were used to examine whether the flipped classroom approach, after controlling for sampling error, positively effects student achievement in secondary education. Effect sizes were calculated for the research designs pre-test-post-test (Time), post-test only (PostOnly) and pre-test-post-test with control group (Treatment). Moreover, the impact of four moderator variables as boundary conditions of flipped classroom effectiveness was estimated: disciplinary field, length of the intervention, use of a quiz and use of a learning management system. The meta-analytical findings for the effect size Treatment confirmed the effectiveness of flipped classroom on student achievement in comparison to traditional instruction (Cohen’s d = 0.42). Moderator analyses on the effect size Time showed stronger effects for subjects in the STEM area (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) than for foreign languages and humanities. The effect sizes were also higher for shorter intervention studies than for longer ones and if quiz at home had been left out. Moderator analyses on the effect sizes PostOnly and Treatment made clear that the effect sizes for intervention studies without a learning management system were higher than with a learning management system.
The second study aimed to compare flipped classroom with other forms of video-based instruction and determine which types of students benefit most from video-based instruction. Thirty-eight school classes with 848 ninth-grade students took part in a quasi-experimental pre-post-test intervention study over the course of four weeks. Two independent variables were completely crossed resulting in four experimental conditions: video (at home vs. in class) and instructional method (student-centred vs. teacher-centred). Multilevel analyses revealed that all four experimental conditions were equally effective in promoting students’ learning gains. At-risk, average and excellent students profited least from video-based instruction. Confident and independent students had the highest learning gains from pre- to post-test. The study constitutes a first step towards a comprehensive evaluation of flipped classroom by using a better-controlled research design and may contribute to a more objective discussion about the positive effects of flipped classroom.

A configurable system enables users to derive individual system variants based on a selection of configuration options. To cope with the often huge number of possible configurations, several analysis approaches (e.g., for verification of configurable systems) implement different strategies to account for configurability. One popular strategy—often applied in practice—is to use sampling (i.e.,analyzing only a subset of all system variants). While sampling reduces the analysis effort significantly, the information obtained is necessarily incomplete as some variants are not analyzed. A second strategy is to identify the common parts and the variable parts of a configurable system and analyze each part separately (called feature-based strategy). As a third strategy, researchers have begun to develop family-based analyses. Family-based approaches analyze the code base of a configurable system as a whole, rather than the individual variants or parts of the system, this way exploiting similarities among individual variants to reduce analysis effort. Each of these three strategies has advantages and disadvantages, which might even prevent its application (e.g., the family-based strategy typically needs much main memory). The goal of this thesis is to enable the efficient analysis of configuable systems, even if existing strategies fail (e.g., the family-based strategy, because of memory limitations). To this end, we designed a framework that models the key aspects of configurable-system analysis strategies, independent of their implementation and of the analyses techniques (e.g., type checking or model checking). Guided by our model, we developed a number of analysis strategies for configurable systems. To learn about advantages and disadvantages of individual strategies, we compared these in a series of empirical studies. In particular, we developed and evaluated a model-checking analysis and a data-flow analysis for configurable systems. One of our key findings is that family-based analysis outperforms most sampling heuristics with respect to analysis time, while being able to make definite statements about all variants of a configurable system. Furthermore, we identified advantages and disadvantages of analysis strategies and how to mitigate them by combining strategies. In our endeavor, we identified two key problems that are common to configurable-system analyses, and we developed supporting techniques to solve them. These techniques are general and are applicable beyond our research. In particular, we developed presence-condition simplification and variability encoding. Presence-condition simplification provides a simple method to reduce the size of the output or the internal data structure of configurable-systemanalyses. Variability encoding provides a means for transforming compile-time variability to run-time variability, which enables many family-based analyses.
Our key contributions are the model of analysis strategies for configurable systems and the corresponding empirical comparisons of strategies. Our findings are backed by empirical studies, which helped broaden the community knowledge on analyses of configurable systems (indicated by citations). For these evaluations, we prepared several subject systems, which have also been used already by other researchers. Furthermore, we developed several analysis tools and demonstrated their feasibility in practical application scenarios based on code from, for example, the Linux kernel. Our tools are based on variability-aware optimizations that enable levels of scalability on configurable systems that were not possible with other tools before.
This article presents a proposal on how the European Union’s regulatory framework on genetically modified (GM) plants should be reformed in light of recent developments in genomic plant breeding techniques. The reform involves a three-tier system reflecting the genetic changes and resulting traits of GM plants. The article is intended to contribute to the ongoing debate over how best to regulate plant gene editing techniques in the EU.
Making multimedia data available online becomes less expensive and more convenient on a daily basis. This development promotes web phenomenons such as Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr. These phenomena and their increased acceptance in society in turn leads to a multiplication of the amount of available images online. This vast amount of, frequently public and therefore searchable, images already exceeds the zettabyte bound. Executing a similarity search on the magnitude of images that are publicly available in the Internet, and receiving a top quality result is a challenge that the scientific community has recently attempted to rise to. One approach to cope with this problem assumes the use of distributed heterogeneous Content Based Image Retrieval system (CBIRs). Following from this anticipation, the problems that emerge from a distributed query scenario must be dealt with. For example the involved CBIRs’ usage of distinct metadata formats for describing their content, as well as their unequal technical and structural information. An addition issue is the individual metrics that are used by the CBIRs to calculate the similarity between pictures, as well as their specific way of being combined. Overall, receiving good results in this environment is a very labor intensive task which has been scientifically but not yet comprehensively explored. The problem primarily addressed in this work is the collection of pictures from CBIRs, that are similar to a given picture, as a response to a distributed multimedia query. The main contribution of this thesis is the construction of a network of Content Based Image Retrieval systems that are able to extract and exploit the information about an input image’s semantic concept. This so called semantic CBIRn is mainly composed of CBIRs that are configured by the semantic CBIRn itself. Complementarily, there is a possibility that allows the integration of specialized external sources. The semantic CBIRn is able to collect and merge results of all of these attached CBIRs. In order to be able to integrate external sources that are willing to join the network, but are not willing to disclose their configuration, an algorithm was developed that approximates these configurations. By categorizing existing - as well as external - CBIRs and analyzing incoming queries, image queries are exclusively forwarded to the most suitable CBIRs. In this way, images that are not of any use for the user can be omitted beforehand. The hereafter returned images are rendered comparable in order to be able to merge them to one single result list of images, that are similar to the input image. The feasibility of the approach and the hereby obtained improvement of the search process is demonstrated by a prototypical implementation and its evaluation using classified images of ImageNet. Using this prototypical implementation an augmentation of the number of returned images that are of the same semantic concept as the input images is achieved by a factor of 4.75 with respect to a predefined non-semantic CBIRn.
Since any encryption map may be viewed as a polynomial map between finite dimensional vector spaces over finite fields, the security of a cryptosystem can be examined by studying the difficulty of solving large systems of multivariate polynomial equations. Therefore, algebraic attacks lead to the task of solving polynomial systems over finite fields. In this thesis, we study several new algebraic techniques for polynomial system solving over finite fields, especially over the finite field with two elements. Instead of using traditional Gröbner basis techniques we focus on highly developed methods from several other areas like linear algebra, discrete optimization, numerical analysis and number theory. We study some techniques from combinatorial optimization to transform a polynomial system solving problem into a (sparse) linear algebra problem. We highlight two new kinds of hybrid techniques. The first kind combines the concept of transforming combinatorial infeasibility proofs to large systems of linear equations and the concept of mutants (finding special lower degree polynomials). The second kind uses the concept of mutants to optimize the Border Basis Algorithm. We study recent suggestions of transferring a system of polynomial equations over the finite field with two elements into a system of polynomial equalities and inequalities over the set of integers (respectively over the set of reals). In particular, we develop several techniques and strategies for converting the polynomial system of equations over the field with two elements to a polynomial system of equalities and inequalities over the reals (respectively over the set of integers). This enables us to make use of several algorithms in the field of discrete optimization and number theory. Furthermore, this also enables us to investigate the use of numerical analysis techniques such as the homotopy continuation methods and Newton's method. In each case several conversion techniques have been developed, optimized and implemented. Finally, the efficiency of the developed techniques and strategies is examined using standard cryptographic examples such as CTC and HFE. Our experimental results show that most of the techniques developed are highly competitive to state-of-the-art algebraic techniques.
Cryptography is the scientific study of techniques for securing information and communication against adversaries. It is about designing and analyzing encryption schemes and protocols that protect data from unauthorized reading. However, in our modern information-driven society with highly complex and interconnected information systems, encryption alone is no longer enough as it makes the data unintelligible, preventing any meaningful computation without decryption. On the one hand, data owners want to maintain control over their sensitive data. On the other hand, there is a high business incentive for collaborating with an untrusted external party.
Modern cryptography encompasses different techniques, such as secure multiparty computation, homomorphic encryption or order-preserving encryption, that enable cloud users to encrypt their data before outsourcing it to the cloud while still being able to process and search on the outsourced and encrypted data without decrypting it. In this thesis, we rely on these cryptographic techniques for computing on encrypted data to propose efficient multiparty protocols for order-preserving encryption, decision tree evaluation and kth-ranked element computation.
We start with Order-preserving encryption (OPE) which allows encrypting data, while still enabling efficient range queries on the encrypted data. However, OPE is symmetric limiting, the use case to one client and one server. Imagine a scenario where a Data Owner (DO) outsources encrypted data to the Cloud Service Provider (CSP) and a Data Analyst (DA) wants to execute private range queries on this data. Then either the DO must reveal its encryption key or the DA must reveal the private queries. We overcome this limitation by allowing the equivalent of a public-key OPE.
Decision trees are common and very popular classifiers because they are explainable. The problem of evaluating a private decision tree on private data consists of a server holding a private decision tree and a client holding a private attribute vector. The goal is to classify the client’s input using the server’s model such that the client learns only the result of the classification, and the server learns nothing. In a first approach, we represent the tree as an array and execute only d interactive comparisons (instead of 2 d as in existing solutions), where d denotes the depth of the tree. In a second approach, we delegate the complete tree evaluation to the server using somewhat or fully homomorphic encryption where the ciphertexts are encrypted under the client’s public key.
A generalization of a decision tree is a random forest that consists of many decision trees. A classification with a random forest evaluates each decision tree in the forest and outputs the classification label which occurs most often. Hence, the classification labels are ranked by their number of occurrences and the final result is the best ranked one. The best ranked element is a special case of the kth-ranked element. In this thesis, we consider the secure computation of the kth-ranked element in a distributed setting with applications in benchmarking and auctions. We propose different approaches for privately computing the kth-ranked element in a star network, using either garbled circuits or threshold homomorphic encryption.
The aim of this dissertation is to investigate Kaehler differential algebras and their Hilbert functions for 0-dimensional schemes in P^n. First we give relations between Kaehler differential 1-forms of fat point schemes and another fat point schemes. Then we determine the Hilbert polynomial and give a sharp bound for the regularity index of the module of Kaehler differential m-forms, for 0<m<n+2. Next, we examine the Kaehler differential algebras for fat point schemes whose supports lie on non-singular conics in P^2. Finally, we prove the Segre bounds for equimultiple fat point schemes in P^4, this result allows us to determine the regularity index of the module of Kaehler differential 1-forms, and a sharp bound for the regularity index of the module of Kaehler differential m-forms, for 1<m<6.
Noise in schools is considered a massive stress factor for teachers because of various reasons and can therefore lead to performance deficits in the job, but also to physical and psychological impairments. Consequently, research on school noise and its effects is essential. The three studies presented in this paper examined the immediate effects of noise on student teachers and the collateral effects on practicing teachers.
In the first and second study, two experiments were conducted to examine the effects of noise during breaks on stress experience, performance in a concentration test, and error correction of a dictation. Based on the transactional stress model (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984), it was hypothesized that noise leads to an increase in stress experience. According to the maximal adaptability theory (Hancock & Warm, 1989, 2003), noise should initially cause optimal performance, but in the long run should cause performance impairment. For this purpose, in the first study 74 and in the second study 104 student teachers of the University of Passau worked on two different concentration tests and corrected a student’s dictation while listening to short, continuous, or no noise. In both experiments, continuous noise led to an increase in the experience of stress. Neither short nor continuous noise led to a deterioration in concentration performance. Further, different findings emerged: In the first experiment, a short concentration test in combination with continuous noise led to positive effects in dictation correction, i.e., subjects showed better performance in error correction. In the second experiment, a long concentration test combined with short or continuous noise resulted in negative effects, i.e., subjects made more errors in the subsequent correction of dictation. It can be concluded that school noise can, on the one hand, increase the experience of stress and, on the other hand, promote or limit teachers’ subsequent performance. The latest, however, seems to depend on the specific situation of the individual.
In the first part of the third study, the focus was on teachers’ coping styles and experienced stress. Since coping styles have been shown to have a major impact on mental health, it was reasonable to assume that the stress experience caused by noise would vary depending on the coping style. Based on the stress-strain model (Rudow, 2000) and the transactional stress model (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984), it was hypothesized that teachers with risky coping styles experience more stress symptoms. Therefore, an online study was conducted to investigate whether there were differences in psychological and physical symptoms between teachers with different coping styles. For this purpose, 99 Bavarian elementary and middle school teachers were surveyed. Four professional coping styles resulted from the overarching scales of professional commitment and resilience. The healthy type (high commitment, high resilience), the unambitious type (low commitment, high resilience), type A (high commitment, low resilience), and type burnout (low commitment, low resilience) differed in terms of threat appraisal, noise stress, voice and hearing problems, and noise-related burnout. Compared to the healthy type, the risk types − type A and type burnout − exhibited higher stress experience and were generally more susceptible to school noise than the healthy type. This is the first study to show that school noise is particularly hazardous for teachers with risky coping styles.
The second part of the third study focused on the impact pathways of school noise. Associations between teachers’ individual characteristics and the consequences of school noise were hypothesized. Based on the simplified model of teacher stress (van Dick & Wagner, 2001), we examined 159 Bavarian elementary and middle school teachers to determine whether noise stress and vocal fatigue mediate the association between noise sensitivity and noise-related burnout. Results indicated that noise stress mediated the relationship between noise sensitivity and vocal fatigue; vocal fatigue mediated the relationship between noise stress and noise-related burnout; noise stress and vocal fatigue serially mediated the relationship between noise sensitivity and noise-related burnout. This is the first study to show links between noise-sensitive teachers and noise stress, voice problems, and noise-related burnout.
Employment of a very large number of antennas is seen as the key technology to provide future users with very high data rates. At the same time, the implementation complexity will rise due to large memories required and sophisticated signal processing algorithms employed. Continuous technology downscaling allows implementation of such complex digital designs. At the same time, its inherent variability and vulnerability to physical disturbances violate the assumption of perfectly reliable hardware operation.
This work considers Unique Word OFDM which represents the alternative to the standard Cyclic Prefix OFDM providing superior detection quality. The generalization of Unique Word OFDM to a MIMO system is performed which allows interpretation as a virtual massive MIMO system with only few physical antennas. Detection methods for the introduced generalization are discussed and their performance is quantified.
Because of the large memory size required, linear detection represents the cost and performance effective solution. The possible memory errors due to radiation effects or voltage scaling are addressed and the nonlinear MMSE detection algorithm is proposed. This algorithm keeps track of the memory errors and is able to significantly mitigate their effect on the quality of the estimated data.
Apart of memory issues, reliability of the actual computational hardware which constitutes the receiver is of concern in this work. An own implementation of the MMSE Sorted Givens Rotations is subjected to transient fault injection. The impact of faults in various parts of the implemented circuit on the detection performance is quantified. Most vulnerable components of the implemented circuit in terms of reliability are identified.
Security is another major address of this work, since most current implementations include cryptographic devices.
Fault-based attacks on such systems are known to be able to extract the secret key in feasible time.
The remaining part of this work addresses such fault injection-based malicious attacks. Countermeasures based on a combination of information and hardware redundancy are considered. Recently introduced robust codes target such attacks by providing guaranteed detection capability. The performance of these codes is assessed by application to actual cryptographic and general purpose circuits. The work introduces metrics that help to identify fault locations in the circuit which could escape detection with high probability. These locations are targeted by transistor resizing that renders fault injection unfeasible.
After two decades of almost complete isolation, Cambodia was rather suddenly integrated in 1991 into the global ‘free world’. As a result, the function and the role of the administration had to be modified. These transformations in the name of modernization and development have led to a significant rise of professionals, as these provide the necessary knowledge to manage the ongoing socio-economic and political transformations. Due to their educational socialization in urban centers and overseas, they consider themselves the most modern section of their society. Their common objective is to make the organizations they work for less rigid and to reform them along lines of technical-pragmatic concepts. Especially for the professionals working within the Cambodian state, the movement towards more efficiency and effectiveness in the administration and the strengthening of the rule of law is seen as a means to increase credibility of the Government on one hand and to attract foreign investment on the other. However, due to their functional specialization and expertise, professionals in Cambodia are marginalized from the overall socio-political changes in their environment. This has led to the reduction of their possibilities to communicate and organize effectively. Instead, their knowledge is applied to serve the requirements of their organizations/ patron-client networks and not as a resource to form alliances on a national or on a transnational level. A potential exists though for the professionals working in the state administration to either form a strategic group through processes of hybridization, or to form a ‘neutral’ rational administration after the ceding of the ‘old guard’ and thus their ‘disentanglement’ from old clientele structures.
Main memory forensics and its special form, virtual machine introspection (VMI), are powerful tools for digital forensics and can be used to improve the security of computer-based systems. However, their use in production systems is often not possible. This work identifies the causes and offers practical solutions to apply these techniques in cloud computing and on mobile devices to improve digital forensics and incident analysis.
Four key challenges must be tackled. The first challenge is that many existing solutions are not reproducible, for example, because the corresponding software components are not available, obsolete or incompatible. The use of these tools is also often complex and can lead to a crash of the system to be monitored in case of incorrect use. To solve this problem, this thesis describes the design and implementation of Libvmtrace, which is a framework for the introspection of Linux-based virtual machines. The focus of the developed design is to implement frequently used methods in encapsulated modules so that they are easy for developers to use, optimize and test.
The second challenge is that many production systems do not provide an interface for main memory forensics and virtual machine introspection. To address this problem, this thesis describes possible solutions for how such an interface can be implemented on mobile devices and in cloud environments designed to protect main memory from unprivileged access. We discuss how cold boot attacks, the ARM TrustZone and the hypervisor of cloud servers can be used to acquire data from storage.
The third challenge is how to reconstruct information from main memory efficiently. This thesis describes how these questions can be solved by employing two practical examples. The first example involves extracting the keys of encrypted TLS connections from the main memory of applications to decrypt network traffic without affecting the performance of the monitored application. The TLSKex and DroidKex architecture describe two approaches to localize the keys efficiently with the help of semantic knowledge in the main memory of applications. The second example discusses how to monitor and document SSH sessions of potential attackers from outside of a virtual machine. It is important that the monitoring routines are not noticed by an attacker. To achieve this, we evaluate how to optimize the performance of the monitoring mechanism.
The fourth challenge is how to deal with the performance degradation caused by introspection in productive systems. This thesis discusses how this can be achieved using the example of a SIEM system. To reduce the performance overhead, we describe how to configure the monitoring routine to collect only the information needed to detect incidents. Also, we describe two approaches that permit the monitoring routine to be dynamically adjusted at runtime to extract more information if necessary so that incidents can be better analyzed.
Smart Grids integrate currently isolated power and communications networks, while introducing several new technologies on the hardware and software sides. One of the most important ingredients is the potential for demand-response programs, which offer the possibility of sending instructions to consumers to adapt their power consumption over a certain period of time. However, high-frequency data collection exposes consumers’ usage behaviors, leading to security and privacy challenges for Smart Grids.
In this thesis, three cryptographic schemes are constructed for different demand-response programs. In the mandatory incentive-based demand-response program, privacy preservation depends on the power consumption of consumers. An anonymous authentication scheme is constructed for overload auditing and privacy preservation. Consumers’ identities are anonymous during normal operation. The operation center defines an acceptable consumption threshold at times of power shortage. Consumers must follow the instruction and curtail their power consumption to meet the threshold. If they do so, the consumers keep their anonymity, while disobedient consumers, whose power consumption exceeds the threshold, can be identified. Security analysis demonstrates that the constructed anonymous authentication scheme is secure in a random oracle model. In the voluntary incentivebased demand-response program, consumers are categorized as either obedient or disobedient consumers according to their consumption curtailment. Consumers utilize a homomorphic encryption algorithm to encrypt their usage and report the ciphertexts to the operation center periodically. At a time of grid instability, the obedient consumers reduce their consumption and prove their curtailment by using a range proof. Both the usage reports and the proofs from obedient consumers concerning their consumption are reported without leaking private information. In order to achieve the real-time requirement, a security model is proposed and a batch verification algorithm is constructed, which is proved to be secure in the defined oracle model. Apart from reward and penalty detection in demand-response programs, theft detection is also an important requirement in Smart Grids. In order to achieve theft detection, this thesis employs the dynamic k-times anonymous authentication and blind signatures to create an efficient theft detection mechanism in the prepaid card system, where consumers pay for their consumption in advance and obtain credentials. A consumer sends the credentials anonymously and obtains corresponding credentials during times of consumption. If a thief tries to send reused credentials to steal electricity, his anonymity will be revoked. Finally, this thesis proves that the proposed mechanism finds the real identities of power thieves, without sacrificing the privacy of honest consumers under the random oracle model.
Data is an important resource in our economy and society, substantially improving overall business efficiency, innovativeness and competitiveness, and shaping our everyday lives. Yet, to leverage the data's full potential, its access and availability is vital. Thus, data sharing across organizations is of particular importance. This thesis examines the role of data sharing in the digital economy and contributes to a better understanding why data sharing matters, why it is still underutilized, and how data sharing can be encouraged. Thereby, the thesis contributes to the ongoing academic debate as well as the practical and political efforts on how to promote data sharing.
The thesis is comprised of three studies. Study 1 examines personal data sharing among (competing) online services. Particularly, it investigates the consequences of Article 20 in the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR, May 2018), ensuring the right to data portability. This relatively new right allows online service users to transfer any personal data from one service provider to another. Focusing on a) the amount of data provided by users and b) the amount of user data disclosed to third party data brokers by service providers, the study investigates the right to data portability's effect on competitiveness and consumer surplus. Study 2 and Study 3 focus on non-personal data sharing among competing firms. Study 2 examines the literature to identify and classify barriers to non-personal, machine-generated data sharing. The study explains firms' reluctance to sharing data and discusses policy and managerial implications for overcoming the data sharing barriers. Study 3 focuses on data sharing via platforms. It investigates the Business-to-Business (B2B) data sharing platform design implications for promoting industrial data sharing. In particular, Study 3 investigates the dimensions control and transparency regarding their effect in eliciting cooperation and encouraging data sharing among firms.
In summary, this thesis examines and reveals how access and availability of data can be increased through creating beneficial data sharing conditions in B2B relationships. Particularly, the thesis contributes to the understanding of a) the implications of data sharing laws, defined in the GDPR for personal data and b) the challenges and measures of the not yet successfully established, non-personal data sharing.
Aspect-Oriented Programming (AOP) has been promoted as a solution for modularization problems known as the tyranny of the dominant decomposition in literature. However, when analyzing AOP languages it can be doubted that uncontrolled AOP is indeed a silver bullet. The contributions of the work presented in this thesis are twofold. First, we critically analyze AOP language constructs and their effects on program semantics to sensitize programmers and researchers to resulting problems. We further demonstrate that AOP—as available in AspectJ and similar languages—can easily result in less understandable, less evolvable, and thus error prone code—quite opposite to its claims. Second, we examine how tools relying on both static and dynamic program analysis can help to detect problematical usage of aspect-oriented constructs. We propose to use change impact analysis techniques to both automatically determine the impact of aspects and to deal with AOP system evolution. We further introduce an analysis technique to detect potential semantical issues related to undefined advice precedence. The thesis concludes with an overview of available open source AspectJ systems and an assessment of aspect-oriented programming considering both fundamentals of software engineering and the contents of this thesis.
Refactoring is a well known technique to enhance various aspects of an object-oriented program. It has become very popular during recent years, as it allows to overcome deficits present in many programs. Doing refactoring by hand is almost impossible due to the size and complexity of modern software systems. Automated tools provide support for the application of refactorings, but do not give hints, which refactorings to apply and why. The Snelting/Tip analysis is a program analysis, which creates a refactoring proposal for a class hierarchy by analyzing how class members are used inside a program. KABA is an adaption and extension of the Snelting/Tip analysis for Java. It has been implemented and expanded to become a semantic preserving, interactive refactoring system. Case studies of real world programs will show the usefulness of the system and its practical value.
Service Provisions and Business Relationships in the Digital Era – Four Essays in the B2B Context
(2019)
Digitalization has fundamentally changed how services are provided and how service providers and their customers interact with each other in the business-to-business (B2B) context. Against the backdrop of these developments, this thesis considers – in four essays – the changes brought about by both service and sales digitalization. Each essay investigates for one research topic the aspects of existing knowledge regarding non-digital services and/or sales which can be transferred to digital services and sales and which aspects must be adjusted. The aim is to support B2B firms that offer or receive services or plan to do so in the future which cope with the challenges of service and sales digitalization.
In doing so, the first and second essay investigate the contingency effect of service digitalization on service characteristics from the provider and customer views, respectively. Both essays aim at explaining service value as an endogenous variable. In the first essay, service modularity and service flexibility are considered as predecessors that help explain service value. The second essay investigates the effect of customer cocreation on service value. Whereas the first and second essay focus on service characteristics, the third and fourth essay focus on business relationships. Both essays explain relational conflict, one important facet of business relationships, as the endogenous variable and consider the perspectives of both providers and customers. The third essay elaborates on the diverging effect of service digitalization on relational conflict from these two perspectives. The fourth essay incorporates both service and sales digitalization and investigates the contingency effects of the two forms of digitalization on the relationship between coercive power use and relational conflict.
In conclusion, this thesis provides a more fine-grained view on the construct digitalization by differentiating explicitly between service digitalization and sales digitalization and introduces a new conceptualization of service (see all four essays) and sales digitalization (see the fourth essay) by treating digitalization as a continuum. Furthermore, this thesis investigates the opportunities and challenges brought about by digitalization. In particular, the first and second essays show the opportunities service digitalization creates for providers, who could benefit from service modularity, and customers, who could benefit from the integration of their own resources into service provisions. In addition, the third essay shows that for providers service digitalization has a positive and for customers contrarily a negative effect on relation conflict. The fourth essay shows that sales and service digitalization positively moderate the effect of coercive power use on relational conflict for weaker parties in business relationships (except for weaker providers) but not for stronger parties. In sum, this thesis contributes to a better understanding of the consequences of service and sales digitalization and provides recommendations for companies facing challenges and decisions related to this development.
Due to the advances of digitalization, firms are able to collect more and more personal consumer data and strive to do so. Moreover, many firms nowadays have a data sharing cooperation with other firms, so consumer data is shared with third parties. Accordingly, consumers are confronted regularly with the decision whether to disclose personal data to such a data sharing cooperation (DSC). Despite privacy research has become highly important, peculiarities of such disclosure settings with a DSC between firms have been neglected until now. To address this gap is the first research objective in this thesis. Another underexplored aspect in privacy research is the impact of low-cognitive-effort decision-making. This is because the privacy calculus, the most dominant theory in privacy research, assumes for consumers a purely cognitive effortful and deliberative disclosure decision-making process. Therefore, to expand this perspective and examine the impact of low-cognitive-effort decision-making is the second research objective in this thesis. Additionally, with the third research objective, this thesis strives to unify and increase the understanding of perceived privacy risks and privacy concerns which are the two major antecedents that reduce consumers’ disclosure willingness.
To this end, five studies are conducted: i) essay 1 examines and compares consumers’ privacy risk perception in a DSC disclosure setting with disclosure settings that include no DSC, ii) essay 2 examines whether in a DSC disclosure setting consumers rely more strongly on low-cognitive-effort processing for their disclosure decision, iii) essay 3 explores different consumer groups that vary in their perception of how a DSC affects their privacy risks, iv) essay 4 refines the understanding of privacy concerns and privacy risks and examines via meta-analysis the varying effect sizes of privacy concerns and privacy risks on privacy behavior depending on the applied measurement approach, v) essay 5 examines via autobiographical recall the effects of consumers’ feelings and arousal on disclosure willingness.
Overall, this thesis shines light on consumers’ personal data disclosure decision-making: essay 1 shows that the perceived risk associated with a disclosure in a DSC setting is not necessarily higher than to an identical firm without DSC. Also, essay 3 indicates that only for the smallest share of consumers a DSC has a negative impact on their disclosure willingness and that one third of consumers do not intensively think about consequences for their privacy risks arising through a DSC. Additionally, essay 2 shows that a stronger reliance on low-cognitive-effort processing is prevalent in DSC disclosure settings. Moreover, essay 5 displays that even unrelated feelings of consumers can impact their disclosure willingness, but the effect direction also depends on consumers’ arousal level.
This thesis contributes in three ways to theory: i) it shines light on peculiarities of DSC disclosure settings, ii) it suggests mechanisms and results of low-effort processing, and iii) it enhances the understanding of perceived privacy risks and privacy concerns as well as their resulting effect sizes.
Besides theoretical contributions, this thesis offers practical implications as well: it allows firms to adjust the disclosure setting and the communication with their consumers in a way that makes them more successful in data collection. It also shows that firms do not need to be too anxious about a reduced disclosure willingness due to being part of a DSC. However, it also helps consumers themselves by showing in which circumstances they are most vulnerable to disclose personal data. That consumers become conscious of situations in which they are especially vulnerable to disclose data could serve as a countermeasure: this could prevent that consumers disclose too much data and regret it afterwards. Similarly, this thesis serves as a thought-provoking input for regulators as it emphasizes the importance of low-cognitive-effort processing for consumers’ decision-making, thus regulators may be able to consider this in the future.
In sum, this thesis expands knowledge on how consumers decide whether to disclose personal data, especially in DSC settings and regarding low-cognitive-effort processing. It offers a more unified understanding for antecedents of disclosure willingness as well as for consumers’ disclosure decision-making processes. This thesis opens up new research avenues and serves as groundwork, in particular for more research on data disclosures in DSC settings.
(2009)
Zum Thema „Schlesischer Adel im 20. Jahrhundert.
Multimedia retrieval is an essential part of today's world. This situation is observable in industrial domains, e.g., medical imaging, as well as in the private sector, visible by activities in manifold Social Media platforms. This trend led to the creation of a huge environment of multimedia information retrieval services offering multimedia resources for almost any user requests. Indeed, the encompassed data is in general retrievable by (proprietary) APIs and query languages, but unfortunately a unified access is not given due to arising interoperability issues between those services. In this regard, this thesis focuses on two application scenarios, namely a medical retrieval system supporting a radiologist's workflow, as well as an interoperable image retrieval service interconnecting diverse data silos. The scientific contribution of this dissertation is split in three different parts: the first part of this thesis improves the metadata interoperability issue. Here, major contributions to a community-driven, international standardization have been proposed leading to the specification of an API and ontology to enable a unified annotation and retrieval of media resources. The second part issues a metasearch engine especially designed for unified retrieval in distributed and heterogeneous multimedia retrieval environments. This metasearch engine is capable of being operated in a federated as well as autonomous manner inside the aforementioned application scenarios. The remaining third part ensures an efficient retrieval due to the integration of optimization techniques for multimedia retrieval in the overall query execution process of the metasearch engine.
This study explores the integration of data journalism within three European legacy news organisations through the lens of organisational structure and professional culture. Interviews with data journalists and editors suggest that professional routines resonate with established data journalism epistemologies, values, and norms that appear to be constitutional for an inter-organisational data journalism subculture. At the same time, organisational structure either integrates the journalistic subculture by increasing levels of complexity, formalisation, and centralisation or rejects it by not accommodating it structurally or culturally. The three data teams work along epistemologies of computer-assisted reporting, investigative journalism, and data journalism but differentiate themselves through nuanced understandings of data journalism practice, driven by individual journalists. After a structureless episode, one team sets itself apart as it diverges from data-driven routines and orients itself towards technological and interdisciplinary interactive journalism. The findings show an interdependence of individual efforts, varying conceptualisations of data journalism practice, and interplay between organisational structure and professional culture.
Whenever software faults can endanger human life, property, or the environment, the absence of faults must be ensured with utmost care and the best technologies available. Evidence is needed showing that all requirements are satisfied and that the risk of faults is reduced. One technique to conduct such a verification task—composed of the software to verify, the specification to check, and a model of the environment—is software model checking.
To conduct a verification task with a model checker, different models of the task are constructed. We distinguish between two types of task models: syntactic task models and semantic task models, which define the respective syntactic structure (control flow) and semantic structure (state transitions, invariants) of the verification task. When constructing such models, we can observe that similar structures and substructures reappear within and among different verification tasks. For example, the same assertions to check can appear in different functions, or the same predicate can be part of different invariants to describe sets of program states. Similarities that appear during the model construction process can be the result of solving similar reasoning problems, often solved using computationally expensive procedures (as typical for model checking), over and over again. Not reusing results of solving similar problems, not having a means for conducting repeated efforts automatically, or not trying to reduce the number of similar reasoning efforts, is a waste of precious resources.
To address these problems, we present a common conceptual and technical foundation for sharing syntactic and semantic task artifacts for reuse, within and among verification runs. Both the syntactic construction of a verification task and the construction of its semantic model—which describes all possible behaviors and states—are covered. We study how commonalities and regularities in the task models can be taken into account to facilitate the process of sharing task artifacts for reuse, and to make the overall verification process more efficient and effective. We introduce abstract transducers as the theoretical foundation of this thesis: a type of finite-state transducers with an inherent notion of abstraction for states, the input alphabet, and its output alphabet. Abstracting these transducers allows us to widen both the set of input words for that they produce output and the sets of output words. Abstract transducers are instantiated as task artifact transducers to map from program structures to task artifacts to share. We show that the notion of abstraction provides a means for increasing the scope for that task artifacts are shared for reuse. We present two instances of task artifact transducers: Yarn transducers and precision transducers. We use Yarn transducers for providing code to weave into the control-flow structure of a computer program, and present the Loom analysis as a means for orchestrating the weaving process. Precision transducers provide a means for sharing abstraction precisions for reuse, thus aid in defining the level of abstraction of a semantic task model. For both types of transducers, we provide empirical evidence on their practical applicability, for example, to verify Linux kernel modules, and show that they can help in increasing the verification performance.
Most Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries experienced sound economic growth and a declining rate of poverty over the last two decades. Though, by far, the SSA region remains the poorest in the world and faces tremendous political, social, and economic challenges. Moreover, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SSA entered into a recession with a GDP growth rate of minus 5% in 2020 as ever recorded over 25 years. This has also induced an increase in poverty in the region, which adds up to the structural challenges and further highlight the need of sound policies to address economic growth, governance, jobs, and poverty for the region to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2030 and beyond.
This thesis examines the effects of institutional quality, political instability, and a government targeted entrepreneurship program on the accumulation of human, physical, and financial capital by households and firms. In the literature, these factors are identified as the key determinants of economic growth and job creation, yet this thesis contributes to a knowledge gap, especially at the microeconomic level, on how households and firms accumulate these factors in the presence of weak institutional quality, political instability, and government targeted entrepreneurship programs. In particular, this thesis investigates heterogeneity as well as a single country study of the effects of institutional quality and political instability; it also employs a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to assess the impacts of two different targeted entrepreneurship support programs; and finally, it taps on data from this field experiment to assess the performance of two different targeting mechanisms for selecting growth-oriented entrepreneurs. Each paper is self-contained and three among the four papers were written with co-authors.
The first paper assesses the effects of institutional quality and political instability on household assets and human capital accumulation in 19 Sub-Saharan African countries for the period 2003-16. In this paper, the concept of instability is enlarged to include factual instability as measured by the number of political violence and civil unrest events, perceived instability as measured by the perceptions of the quality of institutions by households, and the interplay between factual and perceived instability. Contrary to most previous analyses, this paper takes into account household wealth distribution to show how the effects of political instability differ for poor vs. rich households. For identification, I exploit the variation of factual and perceived instability across 185 administrative regions in the 19 countries. My regressions control for a large range of confounding factors measured at the levels of households, regions, and countries. Overall, factual and perceived instability are associated with higher investments in assets, and factual instability is also associated with more investment in house improvements, yet it is negatively associated with the ownership of financial accounts. With regard to the heterogeneous effects, increased factual or perceived instability is associated with more investments in physical capital but less investments in financial and human capital among rich households, and with less investments in physical, financial and human capital among poor households. These findings suggest that political instability might enhance the accumulation of wealth by rich households and reduce that of poor households, implying that the detrimental effects of political instability have lasting consequences for poor households, especially when poor households are exposed to an actual or even just perceived deteriorating quality of the country’s institutions.
The second paper, written with Nicolas Büttner and Michael Grimm, analyzes households’ investments in assets and their consumption, and education and health expenditures when exposed to actual instability as measured by the number of political violence and protest events in Burkina Faso. There is a large, rather macroeconomic, literature that shows that political instability and social conflict are associated with poor economic outcomes including lower investment and reduced economic growth. However, there is only very little research on the impact of instability on households’ behavior, in particular their saving and investment decisions. This paper merges six rounds of household survey data and a geo-referenced time series of politically motivated events and fatalities from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data project (ACLED) to analyze households’ decisions when exposed to instability in Burkina Faso. For identification, the paper exploits variation in the intensity of political instability across time and space while controlling for time-effects and municipality fixed effects as well as rainfall and nighttime light intensity, and many other potential confounders. The results show a negative effect of political instability on financial savings, the accumulation of durables, investment in house improvements, as well as on investment in education and health. Instability seems, in particular, to lead to a reshuffling from investment expenditures to increased food consumption, implying lower growth prospects in the future. With respect to economic growth, the sizable education and health effects seem to be particularly worrisome.
The third paper, written with Michael Grimm and Michael Weber, employs a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to assess the short-term effects of a government support program targeted at already existing and new firms located in a semi-urban area in Burkina Faso. Most support programs targeted at small firms in low- and middle-income countries fail to generate transformative effects and employment at a larger scale. Bad targeting, too little flexibility and the limited size of the support are some of the factors that are often seen as important constraints. This paper assesses the short-term effects of a randomized targeted government support program to a pool of small and medium-sized firms that have been selected based on a rigorous business plan competition (BPC). One group received large cash grants of up to US$8,000, flexible in use. A second group received cash grants of an equally important size, but earmarked to business development services (BDSs) and thus less flexible and with a required own contribution of 20%. A third group serves as a control group. All firms operate in agri-business or related activities in a semi-urban area in the Centre-Est and Centre-Sud regions of Burkina Faso. An assessment of the short-term impacts shows that beneficiaries of cash grants engage in better business practices, such as formalization and bookkeeping. They also invest more, though, this does not translate into higher profits and employment yet. Beneficiaries of cash grants and BDSs show a higher ability to innovate. The results also show that cash grants cushioned the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic for the beneficiaries. More generally, this study adds to the thin literature on support programs implemented in a fragile-state context.
The fourth paper, written with Michael Weber, examines the selection of entrepreneurs based on expert judgments for a BPC in Burkina Faso. To support job creation in developing countries, governments allocate significant funds to a typically small number of new or already existing micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) that are growth oriented. Increasingly, these enterprises are picked through BPCs where thematic experts are asked to make the selection. So far, there exists contrasting and limited evidence on the effectiveness and efficiency of these expert judgments for screening growth-oriented entrepreneurs among contestants in BPCs. Alternative or complementary approaches such as evaluation and selection algorithms are discussed in the literature but evidence on their performance is thin. This paper uses a principal component analysis (PCA) to build a metric for comparing the performance of these alternative mechanisms for targeting entrepreneurs with high potential to grow. The results show expert subjectivity bias in judging contestant entrepreneurs. The paper finds that the scores from the expert judgment and those from the algorithm perform similarly well for picking the top-ranked or talented entrepreneurs. It also finds that both types of scores have predictive power, i.e. have statistically significantly associated with 17 firm performance outcomes measured 10 or 34 months after the BPC started. Yet, the predictive power, as measured by the magnitude of the regression coefficients, is higher for the algorithm metric, even when it is considered jointly with expert judgment scores. Despite the statistical superiority of the algorithm, expert assessments at least through pitches of entrepreneurs have proved useful in many settings where free-riding or misuse of public funds may occur. Hence, efficiency and precision could be achieved by relying on a reasoned combination of expert judgments and an algorithm for targeting growth-oriented entrepreneurs.
These four papers bring new insights on the relationship between weak institutions, political instability, and targeted government support to entrepreneurship for increasing the accumulation of financial, physical, and human capital, and productivity. And these are the key factors for spurring economic growth and creating jobs in SSA. These findings suggest that efficient institutions building in SSA countries would enhance citizen perceptions of good governance which would reduce political instability and enable households including the poor to accumulate productive assets, increase their productivity and reduce poverty. The findings also suggest that targeted government entrepreneurship support programs, e.g. in the forms of cash grants with monitored disbursements yet flexible in use, can enhance firms’ human capital, productive assets, and innovations, even in the short term. Moreover, the targeting mechanism of such programs could be made more effective and efficient by relying on a combinaison of expert judgments and an algorithm for picking growth-oriented entrepreneurs.
