In this article, the Moscow Conceptualist Vadim Zakharov reflects on the intertwinement of his artistic practice and his work as book designer. One of the main insights is that, for Zakharov, art becomes interesting when it emerges from, and yet goes beyond, work. This transgression is minimal, but it is founded in the particular experience of, and reflection on, work. Zakharov’s knowledge of book design becomes a means for his artistic expression. This article implies a critique of the indeterminate potentiality of the artist, herewith questioning the post-medium condition of art.
This article addresses the relationship between artistic knowledge and employed work through the example of the Moscow-based Collective Actions group. In order to reflect on the specific social context of their artistic production, especially the time away from work, the term ‘art after work’ is introduced. The extensive production of knowledge and information by Collective Actions has had a significant impact on Moscow Conceptualism more broadly. However, if this is considered in the context of free time after work, then it can be argued that the art of the Collective Actions group goes far beyond the ‘aesthetics of administration’ ascribed to Conceptual Art and to Moscow Conceptualism.
