Einleitung
(2017)
The introduction reflects on the results of the conference ‘…macht aber viel Arbeit. Kunst – Wissen – Arbeit’ (…but it’s a lot of work. Art – Knowledge – Work), which took place in 2014 at the Berlin University of the Arts, organized by the DFG Research Training Group ‘Knowledge in the Arts’. Artistic work tends to be distinguished from, and even opposed to, other forms of work, however, especially with the rise of the information and knowledge economy, this distinction has become more questionable.
This article addresses the relationship between artistic knowledge and employed work through the example of the Moscow-based Collective Actions group. In order to reflect on the specific social context of their artistic production, especially the time away from work, the term ‘art after work’ is introduced. The extensive production of knowledge and information by Collective Actions has had a significant impact on Moscow Conceptualism more broadly. However, if this is considered in the context of free time after work, then it can be argued that the art of the Collective Actions group goes far beyond the ‘aesthetics of administration’ ascribed to Conceptual Art and to Moscow Conceptualism.
