This essay introduces the main outlines of the Speculation as a Mode of Production research project, which looks at 'speculation' as a cultural logic and a defined set of historical circumstances that shape many social institutions and relations, including contemporary art, into forms that evoke finance: future orientation, competition, abstraction of content, prevalence of accumulation over labour. Art and finance are thus seen as
paradigmatic instances of speculation as a productive mode since both are sites of an ontological rejection of labour. This can be seen as a revisiting of Adorno's aesthetic theory on the status of the artwork in capitalism, but from the side of labour rather than the commodity.
