This article reports findings from a one-month design research project in which four textile and fashion designers engaged in collaborative exploration of technical and artistic knowledge inherent in folds and folding. They experimented with textile technologies and construction methods to design, fabricate and analyze three-dimensional dynamic materiality in electronic textiles (e-textiles). The focus was on sensor structures achieved by knitting, weaving, pleating and coating techniques. The analysis of measurements of electrical resistance between one and 36 sensing areas per sample demonstrate the added value of folds integrated into textile sensor structures. The authors discuss types of folding and their aesthetic, textural and sensorial advantages. Detailed information on design, fabrication and experimental results is provided in supplementary materials to the article.
Language is the essential medium of human communication, and it takes various
forms, from music to computer code, each of which is suited to specific purposes.
This paper explores the realm of vernacular language, infused with sarcasm, within
the contexts of poetry and folk music. Specifically, we explore its transformative role
within the socio-political landscape of post-1967 Egypt, shedding light on its
dynamic impact on the political and social structure of the time.
Our research places particular emphasis on the works of Ahmad Fouad Negm and
his collaborative partnership with Sheikh Imam. Through their unique lens, this
paper explores the profound significance of vernacular poetry as a powerful tool for
articulating the everyday struggles and sentiments of the underprivileged class.
Their compositions served as a means of resistance to Egypt's ruling class and
provided a powerful voice for those marginalized within society. This study
highlights the enduring importance of vernacular sarcastic poetry in addressing
socio-political issues and advocating for the underprivileged in post-1967 Egypt's
socio-political landscape.
On Figures and Pointclouds: An exploration of 3D scanning through process-driven creative research

This article traces creative research on 3D scanning, that we – Maria Kyrou in collaboration with Jiawen Wang (Student Assistant, study program Art & Media) – developed in the context of the InKüLe Project (UdK Berlin) during the winter semester 2022-23. Following an associative and process-oriented approach, we pursued a creative exploration of 3D scanning, while illuminating both conceptual and technical aspects. This case study had a double scope: to experiment with the possibilities of different 3D scanning workflows for the creation of hybrid artistic formats and to reflect on ways of relating to emerging digital media, in order to facilitate their critical integration into a learning process for students and educators alike. 3D scanning serves thereby as a ‘Leitmotif’ for a broader inquiry on how mediators may learn.
Our project focused on the 3D capture of human figures, creating an interplay between scanning method and captured form. As an experimental exploration, the results of 3D scanning were interpreted through intuitive associations stemming from different art fields and visual media. Exploring both static and dynamic forms of 3D capture, the idea of movement became central as the creative process unfolded. Considered from the perspective of experimental media didactics, the article concludes with the definition of two pairs of qualities, which were central in its development and relation to emerging digital media.
Hybrid conferences and events are becoming the norm and even after the pandemic, a majority of students are asking for hybrid education as a permanent format at universities. In parallel, hybrid learning, which allows participants to connect on-site or digitally, means greater logistical and cognitive effort for educators, as well as active, participatory support by students. In the wake of these newly emerging learning cultures, it is vital to design them sustainably and critically reflect their impact. In this workshop, participants are invited to co-design future learning artefacts and practices. The workshop is conceived as a playful participatory design format in which the relationship between technology, pedagogy and future skills will be reflected and translated into provocative future artifacts. Whether your interest lies in emerging technologies, education, future design or sustainability, your views and expertise are welcome. This workshop is framed within the overarching question of "how hybrid learning spaces can be designed sustainably?" and within the larger context of the third-party funded project "InKüLe - Innovationen für die Künstlerische Lehre" at the UdK Berlin. The project InKüLe aims to develop and implement digital/hybrid forms of education using emerging technologies as well as interdisciplinary teaching and learning formats, as well as critically reflect their impact. The workshop results, therefore, contribute to the extensive discourse of the UdK Berlin and its university network of the Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre.
Planetary Embodiment (2021-2023) is a seminar and transdisciplinary artistic practice coordinated by Luïza luz at the Berlin University of Arts as part of Studium Generale. Engaging with the "Transformation of Silence Into Language and Action" as suggested by Audre Lorde, we envisioned this publication with the intention of investigating the power of words in breaking silences and cultivating awareness of intersectional environmentalism. The content was developed through workshops and guest lectures in collaboration with Andrea Galano Toro, gal sherizly, Denilson Baniwa, participants, and friends. In reciprocity for the causes we are addressing, the profits from this publication are directed to initiatives supporting Indigenous, land, human, and more than human rights.
Im Rahmen der TURN Konferenz `23 stellte das InKüLe Team mediendidaktische Vermittlungsformen für eine nachhaltige Implementierung von immersiv-medialen Lernumgebungen an einer Kunstuniversität zur Diskussion. Hierzu wurden das technologische VR-Toolkit und das ‚sessions_vr‘ Lehrformat, welches prozess- und erfahrungsorientiert die interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit von Studierenden mit immersiven Medien eröffnete, vorgestellt.
‚sessions_vr‘ wurde im Sommer Semester 2023 als Workshop-Reihe mit verschiedenen thematischen Schwerpunkten angeboten. Teilnehmende erhielten Einführungen in innovative Tools und Plattformen, wie zum Beispiel die VR-Sketching-App Gravity Sketch, und hatten die Möglichkeit im Gestaltungsprozess sich transdisziplinär auszutauschen. Durch ein offenes Format zur Erkundung von VR wurden die Teilnehmenden befähigt, die vorgestellten experimentellen Formate weiterzuentwickeln oder selbst zu initiieren. Gleichzeitig erlaubte ‚sessions_vr‘ die kritische Reflexion von Lehr- und Lernkulturen durch die Befähigung von direktem Feedback und dessen Umsetzung in neuen Workshops.
Ziel ist die Schaffung einer offenen Lernumgebung, in der das spielerische Experiment und erfahrungsbasiertes Lernen im Mittelpunkt stehen, und worin kollektive und kritische Wissensproduktion gefördert werden kann. In einer zweiten Projektphase im Winter Semester 2023 sollen die Ergebnisse in Form eines mediendidaktisch reflektierten VR-Toolkits dokumentiert werden, um so den Unterricht von VR-Technologien an verschiedenen Hochschulen und in anderen Bildungskontexten unterstützen zu können. Als Teil der TURN Konferenz wurden die ersten ‚sessions_vr‘ Ergebnisse präsentiert und kritische Reflexionen durch ein größeres und transdisziplinäres Fachpublikum weiter befragt.
Separating data and design

This paper explores the concept of "Separation of Concerns" and its relevance to artistic education. We discuss the importance of separating data and design in software development and its benefits in opening access to distinct layers. Arguing that the separation of data and design is crucial in creating functional and effective digital tools for artistic education.
In a state of ontological crisis, all boundaries between human and machine, nature and culture, and the organic and inorganic have been severely blurred. These are times of curious contrivances, novel natures, inescapable automation, and posthuman performances – where human and nonhuman find themselves being entwined, meshed and muddled into new unwitting entanglements. But from biased machine-learning to surveillance capitalism and digital colonisation – what power-structures are implicitly and covertly being embedded into these technologies?
In a demand for more transparency, multiple movements are making a turn toward democratising knowledge and technology. They are exploring the potentials of open data, software, hardware and wetware to battle concealed hierarchies and partisan paradigms – eliciting a practice of counter-coding in a proliferating politics of machines.
Within the Politics of the Machines conference series – following Copenhagen (2018) and Beirut (2019), the third POM conference took place as a hybrid conference on the 14-17 of September 2021, hosted by the chair for Open Science at the Technische Universität Berlin / Einstein Center Digital Future and the Berlin University of the Arts / Weizenbaum Institute.
The goal of this edition of POM was to debate and devise concepts and practices that seek to critically question and unravel novel modes of science – what roles do academia, researchers, scientists, artists and designers have to take on in times of crisis, how must we re/position ourselves?
What chances or challenges might the democratisation of technology and knowledge elicit, and what potential do practices such as critical making, community science, trans/feminist hacking or citizen forensics hold to bend the hierarchies of power – how can we work with active matter and technical turmoil to re/act?
‘POM Berlin – Rogue Research’ aimed to probe new methodological approaches from art, design and civic activism within the framework of academia in order to surface an inter- and transdisciplinary terrain that attempts to exceed the boundaries of theory and practice, academia and activism, and science and civil society.
The POM Berlin conference emerged as a collaboration between the Technische Universität Berlin, the Berlin University of the Arts, Aalborg University, Aalto University, and the International University of Beirut. The conference took place over four days, comprising a series of tracks, interventions and a student exhibition.
The conference brought together track chairs, speakers and interventions from 31 countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, North and South America, representing critical perspectives on technology – decolonial, feminist and sustainable approaches, across disciplines, knowledge cultures and spaces.
Taking place in times of a pandemic and geopolitical crisis, the editors, conference committee and organisational team would like to sincerely thank all of the track chairs, authors, intervening artists and designers, and students involved in this endeavour, for making both the conference and the resulting proceedings possible. It is the profound engagement of all parties, especially the ever-growing POM community,
that has allowed this publication to arise.
New method for the viole d'amour (the love viol) : its origin and history and art of playing it

This thesis focuses on small scale residential cooling application with unitary air conditioning units as they are wide spread in the so called Middle East North African Region. The presence of these single room or single apartment cooling systems is evaluated and their impact throughout the region assessed. They have a tremendous impact on the electric supply in countries like Saudi Arabia where most of the households already have an AC-unit. The impact in other countries with relatively less installed systems, like in Egypt, is already crucial and leads to regular power cuts. However, the stability of the grids of these countries will decrease further with a higher penetration rate of electric air conditioning systems. Current technology development aims to reduce the buildings cooling energy demand, increase the coefficient of performance, or to substitute the cooling mechanism with a different approach such as sorptive cooling systems. However, these systems require a costly and time intensive change of the building structure or an exchange of the existing cooling system. Due to this reasons, this thesis focuses on the additional installation of a small scale PV electric system, including a battery and applying advanced control strategies to utilize the thermal storage capacity of the building masses. Therefore, the present room cooling system is modeled as a reference system as it could be present throughout the entire region. This system consists of a room model of a typical apartment structure and is cross validated. Two use cases are applied: a bed room and a living room. Further, it includes a model of the solar electric system which is as well parametrized to regional values. Newly, a split unit model and an extended Kinetic Battery model are set up. The single models are combined to an entire system simulation. Afterwards, the main parameters are varied in particle swarm optimization runs to determine the impact of various boundary conditions, such as the electricity price and feed in tariffs, battery and thermal storage capacities, and solar collector field size. The simulation results are compared in terms of levelized costs of cooling, solar coverage rate and the solar cooling autonomy. The findings are compared in a case study. This study highlights the results of the Hurghada, Egypt city district of El Gouna. There, personal observations of the results where possible and an in depth analysis of the results was undertaken. In this location, the levelized costs of electricity for a small scale PV system with 1kWpeak drop there to 0.18USD/kWh with a short investment period of 5 years. They even drop to 0.08 and 0.05USD/kWh when taking an investment period of 15 or 25 years into consideration. With this values, various levelized costs of cooling are simulated as a parameter field of the particle swarm optimization. The findings show, that in most cases, the cooling costs become negative, even with relatively short investment periods. Within a bed room, a solar coverage rate of 0.9 can be achieved with a small scale PV system with weighted costs of only 677USD. In terms of solar cooling autonomy, the most cost efficient system has weighted costs of1,036USD, resulting in a coverage rate of 0.71. The living room air conditioning system can achieve best weighted costs of1,459USDfor a cooling autonomy of 0.86.Further, the practical application of a small scale PV electric solar cooling system was evaluated by the author in the case study location itself. The limitations of the theoretic system design are presented and discussed. Part of this analysis is the thermal stratification in typical vaulted apartment structures as they have a huge impact on the deviation between simulated and measured room air cooling demand.
Originally, music choreography works of rhythm are closely tied to music and seek the most comprehensive possible transfer of all musical parameters into spatio-temporal as well as dynamic correspondences. Following the boundary-expanding developments in music and dance from the 1960s onwards, other intermedial forms of reference have become conceivable. Dorothea Weise breaks these down exemplarily and presents a system (to be questioned critically and thought through further).
The transmission of musical processes via corresponding movement sequences can be seen as the foundation of Dalcroze Eurhythmics. Accordingly, the sensibility for rhythm and its inherent interplay of tension and relaxation in space and time is significant for the embodied visualisation of music. For creating wider aesthetic experiences and confrontation with the rhythmical structures of music and other artistic expressions—such as visual arts and literature—it can be helpful to take a look at other concepts of rhythm. Recent theories about rhythm from the music theorists Steffen A. Schmidt and Christopher Hasty, as well as the philosophical thoughts about speech from Ludwig Wittgenstein, described as «Saying and Showing», open up additional structures that may enrich the process of artistic creation and performance in eurhythmics.
Jumping over one's own shadow and expanding boundaries are frequent demands in the field of music and movement through the special methodological possibilities of eurhythmics. This is true for the learners as well as for the teachers. With a view to the concept of perception of constructivism, it is first clarified why perceptions are always individual and bound to subjective experiences. Then the ‘Gegen-Stand’ comes into play as a surface of friction and a basis for an active and reflective engagement that is capable of producing new results.
Choreomusical work opens a world of images and signs beyond language. The expressiveness of what is heard and seen merges with the tacit-knowing-view of the viewer and the listener.
Meaningful resonances and processes of understanding develop along the structure of the work and within the individual construct of implicit and explicit knowledge of the audience. In this process, perception plays a major role. Aside from the obvious processing of acoustic and
visual stimuli, this paper will look at the role of proprioception, especially the kinaesthetic sense, with regard to its role as intermediary and creator in the process of perception.
Marianne Steffen-Wittek initially concentrates on theoretical concepts of rhythm with special reference to texts by the founder of eurhythmics Émile Jaques-Dalcroze, and corresponding writings by Henrietta Rosenstrauch. As music educators, their writings provide a deep insight into the analysis of difficulties in the realisation of rhythms and ways to overcome them. The following selection of current theoretical concepts of eurhythmics in Germany shows in particular an intensified view of the connection between perception and movement and its (still to be further researched) effects on pedagogical and artistic activity. Rhythm theory and research in rock, pop, jazz and groove-based music is a relatively young field. In her remarks on groove and swing in jazz music, Steffen-Wittek refers to Mark Russell Doffman, whose embodied concepts can be important material for jazz-oriented rhythm teaching. She develops practical examples and connects them with the complex theoretical concept of eurhythmics by Holmrike Oesterhelt-Leiser.
Understanding dance as a sensory and mentally grounded organisation of movement is at the core of Stephanie Schroedter's reflections. Of particular interest is the “muscle” or “movement” sense, which Émile Jaques-Dalcroze already insisted upon with great clairvoyance to train the transformation of sounds into spatio-temporal and dynamic nuanced, “plastic” movement creations. Against this backdrop Schroedter traces the “discovery” of our kinaesthesia back to its beginnings – as a sense responsible for the perception of one’s own movements, but also for self-perception based on movements. Subsequently, from a phenomenological perspective, the concept of a “kinaesthetic hearing” is established as an immediate interweaving of auditory perception with (visible or imaginary) movements.
While a standard definition of (musical) rhythm indicates that it consists of the duration of individual events of sound and silence, this paper suggests that rhythm consists of the units of events such as
sounds, silences and bodily movements which are no preexisting formal objects that can be combined, but units of action that are constituted in the course of rhythmic experience.

Handy Handbook of Hands

Handy Handbook of Hands is about the finger binary systems. The first part of this book shows how to count and display binary numbers on the fingers. In the second part, a binary finger alphabet is developed that enables the communication of words with fingers.
Children learn to count with their fingers at an early age. The Latin word for fingers or toes “digitus” is the root of the English word digit. A normal person has, if nothing unforeseen happens, five digits on each hand. This limits the counting of the fingers to ten. By using binary numbers with the fingers of one or both hands, it is possible to count and display all numbers from 0 to 1023.
Counting in binary is one thing, but fingers can switch from “counting mode” to “text mode”. The binary finger alphabet technique allows communicating words and even entire sentences with the fingers. It is similar to Morse code and gives each letter of the alphabet a specific finger constellation. It is structured from simple finger constellations for the most commonly used letters of the English alphabet to more difficult constellations for rare letters.

What does the digitization and mediatization of space mean for our physical and virtual knowledge spaces. How can architectural and interface design promote innovation and creativity through their spatial configurations and protocols? Which new approaches need to be deployed so that complexity is created instead of reduced?
Abstract. This study compares performance of different speech com-
mand classification systems which can be executed on an Raspberry
Pi Zero ARMv6 architecture. Three systems are evaluated: first one,
TREELITE_MFCC, is based on Treelite system cross-compiles a MFCC-
classifying Random Forest into a highly optimized shared library; second,
TFLITE_MFCC, performs classification of MFCC inputs by means of
convolutional neural network encoded as a lightweight TensorFlow Lite
model while the third one - labeled as TFLITE_RAW - uses more com-
plex network to directly classify the audio signal. We evaluate models
not only in terms of their accuracy and precision, but also in terms of
execution time, voltage, current and energy consumed. We observe that
while TFLITE_RAW offers superior performance in terms of accuracy,
TREELITE_RAW is also worth of consideration for low-latency real-
life applications since it offers relatively good performance (avg. micro-
precision=0.917) but its predictions, when executed on Raspberry Pi
Zero, are significantly faster and cost less energy than TensorFlow Lite
models.
The original TuringTest is modified in order to take
into account the age&gender of a Judge who evaluates the
machine and the age&gender of a Human with whom the
machine is compared during evaluation. This yields a basic taxonomy of TuringTest-consistent scenarios which is
subsequently extended by taking into account the type of intelligence being evaluated. Consistently with the Theory of Multiple Intelligences, nine basic intelligence types are
proposed, and an example of a possible scenario for evaluation of emotional intelligence in early stages of development is given.
It is suggested that specific intelligence types can be
subsequently grouped into hierarchy at the top of which is seated an Artificial Intelligence labelled as “meta-modular”. Finally, it
is proposed that such a meta-modular AI should be defined as an Artificial Autonomous Agent and should be given all the rights and responsibilities according to age of human counterparts in
comparison with whom an AI under question has passed the

Listening appears as a research strategy: listening to remember, to
resonate, to fill the gap, to unpack, to participate, to endeavour, to
write, to read, to represent, to witness, to change, to resist, to learn,
to un-learn, to dream, to imagine, to meditate, to fall, to question, to
reveal, to travel, to envision, to feel, to wonder, to ask, to think, to
navigate, to dig, to bind, to murmur, to say loud, to share, to commit,
to repair, to speak out, to meet, to hear, to dwell … in becoming.
Spaces of Collectivity

How is it to act collectively when each one of us brings our own
perspective, values, assumptions, and also our own language? How does
from the many become ‘one’? What compromises does one need to make on the
way? These were the questions we explored during the workshop Spaces of
Collectivity. The aim was to collectively experience and enjoy space,
while noticing how different our perspectives on it are, and how being
able to talk about them, is key to any collective act of visioning,
making or caring for space. Maps, as final products, and map-making, as
the process of making these, became the tools to visualise and thus be
able to better discuss these challenges.
What are recent examples of practices in which ‘assembling’ and
‘disseminating’ reconfigure agencies, resources, affects and information
to give rise to new forms of collectivities? This round table brings
together Björn Heerssen and Noel David Nicolaus from the
interdisciplinary collective Clusterduck, and sociologist Serhat
Karakayali to ask about the relationships and interdependencies between
‘assembling’ and ‘disseminating’ as constitutive mechanisms in processes
of collectivization. How do agencies, resources, affects and information
elevate processes of creating collective feelings? Together we discuss
how ‘assembling’ and ‘disseminating’ take shape in each example, leading
to different forms of collectivities; what practicable mechanisms,
interfaces and infrastructures come into play; and how do these two
instances approach possibilities of collective interaction
in terms of
‘sharing’ and ‘learning’.
What practices constitute the commons? What are the conditions of the
situated processes of commoning? What and how do we thereby learn? What
would constitute a new sense of sharing, distributing, partaking? And,
how can we take the idea of relationality seriously and institute
structures of reciprocity between art, academia, and activism? To address
these questions the round table commoning/communing brings together three
projects focusing on urban practices of commoning.
The round table instituting/fleeing addresses collective practices as
forms of resistance against power asymmetries – as activist strategies.
It focuses on the entangled dynamics between fleeing and occupying the
institution and the role institutional critique plays in these dynamics.
We will map out our different collective practices by posing questions,
such as: How can we understand the different ways the institution and the
collectives are linked? How to create collectives within the institution?
How can collectives flee or occupy the institution? Who can flee and
where to? How do institutions appropriate and destroy collective
structures?
In June 2019, I held the workshopcooking, playing and sharing at the
symposium sharing/learning: methods of the collective in art, research
and activism by the DFG-Graduiertenkolleg “Das Wissen der Künste”, Berlin
University of the Arts (UdK), at/in cooperation with District * School
without Center.
I invited guests to explore how to come together spontaneously,
creatively and intuitively for preparing a feast without previously
knowing the recipe and without a recipe. The main idea was how to make a
meal with the ingredients, we would have available, and share it between
the participants of the event. Noncooking Knowledge was required. As it
usually happens in my proposals, the practice has taken other directions.
What are the reasons behind a newfound popularity of collectives within
art economies? Could it be that collective practices are a necessary
answer to the challenges faced by (creative) workers in late capitalist
society? To reflect these questions, we take this text as a starting
point to try to critically assess our own personal history as an internetbased
research collective.
This text was part of the opening to the symposium sharing/learning:
methods of the collective in art, research and activism and was read on
28th June 2019, in English, by two members of the organizing team, as
introductory words. The text deliniates the central questions from which
the two-day gathering arises, as well as its methodologies and actors.
Many formulations originate from previously written concept papers, which
were used to present the project for various purposes. These in turn are
informed by the many conversations that took place within the
organizational team – a group of people whose constellation was shifting
along the way – orally as well as in writing.
In response to this issue’s call to “engage aesthetic processes of
remembering,” this paper analyses Fair Play (2014), a stereoscopic 3-D
cinema installation by Toronto-based filmmaker Ali Kazimi. Produced in
conjunction with the centennial anniversary of the arrival and detainment
of the Komagata Maru steamship in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada,
the installation engages in an act of critical commemoration by imagining
the lives of members of the South Asian diaspora affected by this
incident. I argue that by centering affect within the formal and
conceptual framework of the installation, Kazimi produces a decolonial
aesthetic that restructures our relationship to this past, bringing to
the fore ways of living and knowing that had previously been devalued and
violently erased by colonial agendas and neoliberal art historical
critiques.
‘Looking Back Forward_Quip Nayr’ is based on the Aymara concept of time
and space called ‘qhip nayr’. As the Bolivian sociologist Silvia Rivera
Cusicanqui refers to it, ‘quip nayr’ is a way of looking into the past to
orient your path to the future. I use this concept to reflect on
processes of change, concerning language, identity and place. Expressing
identity on fabric recuperates my ancestors’ tradition from the Andean
region in Abya Yala (Latinamerica). The layering of textiles is inspired
by Gloria Anzaldúa, who uses fabrics as a synonym to talk about the
construction of identity in her concept ‘Haciendo Caras’.
For Issue 8 of wissenderkuenste.de, filmmaker Ali Kazimi has contributed
five images from an anaglyph version of his installation Fair Play. The
principle is simple: Each stereo image consists of a pair of images: one
for the left eye and the other for the right eye. All stereo viewing
systems seek to isolate the images, so the left sees only the one
intended for it, and the right sees the one intended for it. Our brain
creates the perception of a 3D image while viewing a 2D screen by fusing
these two slightly offset images together. Fair Play brings together all
strands of Kazimi’s research including stereoscopic 3D filmmaking,
stereoscopic 3D photographic history and images, as well as early
twentieth-century Canadian immigration history and colonialism.
With her photographic series Character Recognition (2006–2007) U.S.
artist Myra Greene examines historical constructions of race and racist
ways of looking from a perspective that undermines the assumed neutrality
of photography. She transforms the old ambrotype technique and encourages
to reflect on the power that visual technologies hold over the
representation of race and identity. Greene recalls yet disobeys
nineteenth-century ethnographic visual practices and looking
instructions, creating a technical and metaphorical deferral of the past
into the present and of the present into the past. Her photographic
practice unveils the ongoing violent effects of nineteenth-century
scientific racism on present-day bodies and embodied ways of looking. At
the same time, Character Recognition gives new life to the archives of
visual colonialism and experiments with photographic representation and
body memory as tools for decolonial options of non-normative (visual)
spaces.
Memoirs of Saturn

In a set of para-fictional texts which interweaves the life of cultural
historian Dr. Shahidul Zaman with key moments in the ruptured history of
Bangladesh, the artist Omar A. Chowdhury, builds a reflexive mirror to
examine the nature of memory, of historiography, and the processes of the
art system. Recounting the history of an exhibition that was censored and
closed down in Dhaka in 2016, Chowdhury constructs a narrative that
doubles back on itself along multiple axes of the personal and public as
he and Dr. Zaman delve into the uncertainties in the presentation of
identity, the recollection of history, and the compromises of political
commitment.
In this work, I relate to the path of conocimiento, a concept developed
by Gloria Anzaldúa, which is a form of spiritual inquiry/activism,
reached via creative acts—writing, art-making, dancing, healing,
teaching, meditation, and spiritual activism. In writing and drawing, I
weave lines to different realities: the rural upbringings of the women
who raised me, my migration from the Third World, the meaning of home and
belonging, and my connection to all that exists on the planet as
political consciousness.
Looking at examples of presenting practices in Berlin and Toronto, this
essay sketches the difficulties that arise when embarking on a curatorial
practice with a decolonial impulse. This text is a partner to “On
Smuggling and Drawing. A Conversation in Blocks”, a dialogue between
curator Juana Awad and artist Luisa Ungar, written in 2020 and appearing
in the publication Künste dekolonisieren. Ästhetische Praktiken des
Lernens und Verlernens (edited by Julian Bauer, Maja Figge, Lisa
Grossmann, Wilma Lukatsch; Berlin, Transcript Verlag, forthcoming.)
But while the dialogue focuses on Ungar’s creation process of the over
one hundred original drawings intervening throughout the publication,
this essay brings to the forefront Awad’s questions about, and
experiences and observations with the mingling of the curatorial and the
decolonial, from her perspective as a curator and cultural worker.
Within documentary practices the relationship between fact and fiction is
constantly renegotiated. The films and videos by John Smith address this
relationship in a special way, disarrange it, and in doing so, reveal the
conditions of producing filmic truth. We invited John Smith to show his
films and comment on them in this regard. Here we present audio
recordings of his statements and short descriptions of the films he
referred to. In the following text, film scholar Volker Pantenburg points
out the importance of John Smith’s voice in his films, it creates a
reflexive level. In a similar way, the audio files create a commentary
level for the films in this article. Additional drawings by the Berlin
based artist Maxim Bauer illustrate the conversational character of the
evening.
07.11.2016 Reconsidering the Shape of Evidence: Visual Documents in and Beyond Contemporary Art.

Sophie Berrebi discusses in her lecture the use of documents in the
visual arts in the first decade of the 21rst century. She focusses on
artists, who shed light on the potentials, mechanisms and traditions of
analogue forms of documentary practices in contrast to the contemporary
emphasis on the usage of digital media. In doing so they question the
status of art works as well as of documents and the relationship of
museums and archives. We present here the presentation manuscript of the
lecture and add the notes taken by two members of the research training
group. This most common kind of documentation of lectures in most
scientific disciplines points out the processes of selection und
accentuation in listening and recording.
Scientific experiments with documenting and archiving sound resulted in
the creation of diverse techniques which were eventually used beyond the
sciences, too. By addressing the poetics and politics of scientific sound
archives an institution comes into focus which is at the intersection of
art and science. While Viktoria Tkaczyk analyzed sound recordings from
the perspective of cultural studies, Gill Aubry presented his artistic
work with sound archives. Here, the evening is documented by photographs,
documentation of Gilles Aubry’s works and the transcription of Aubry’s
lecture.
No-Win Situation is an interdisciplinary exhibition, which took place from May 14th to May 16th 2021 in the Treptower Ateliers. Students, lecturers and alumni from the Universität der Künste Berlin showed their works.
In response to the current situation and beyond, the participants tried to find new forms and ways to approach media that can do justice to the fast-paced character of a human-made downfall. That is what we call "the pessimistic view“: The internet creates a network that is no longer comprehensible. Nature is burdened until the consequences harm the humankind itself. The market creates dynamics that no one can control. Regardless of the Covid-19 pandemic, there are more than enough reasons to be pessimistic about the world.
Spatial sculptures encountered sound installations, machines met performance, virtual realty came across Readymade.
The exhibition catalog tries to link various artistic and creative positions. In terms of design, the question arises to what extent it is possible to reproduce new media but also to interpret them in a documentary print publication – a search for the best way to transport the essence of an artwork, especially when it has more to it than a visual part. The individual artwork is presented in a unique layout, approaching every work with a different design concept which is asking for the right visual language to communicate what is important.
The paper presents a novel method of multiclass classification. The method combines the notions of dimensionality reduction and binarization with notions of category prototype and evolutionary optimization. It introduces a supervised machine learning algorithm which first projects documents of the training corpus into low-dimensional binary space and subsequently uses canonical genetic algorithm in order to find a constellation of prototypes with highest classificatory pertinence. Fitness function is based on a cognitively plausible notion that a good prototype of a category C should be as close as possible to members of C and as far as possible to members associated to other categories. In case of classification of documents contained in a 20-newsgroup corpus into 20 classes, our algorithm seems to yield better results than a comparable deep learning "semantic hashing" method which also projects the semantic data into 128-dimensional binary (i.e. 16-byte) vector space.
In this article, the Moscow Conceptualist Vadim Zakharov reflects on the intertwinement of his artistic practice and his work as book designer. One of the main insights is that, for Zakharov, art becomes interesting when it emerges from, and yet goes beyond, work. This transgression is minimal, but it is founded in the particular experience of, and reflection on, work. Zakharov’s knowledge of book design becomes a means for his artistic expression. This article implies a critique of the indeterminate potentiality of the artist, herewith questioning the post-medium condition of art.
Mostly autobiographical, this article describes the development of Free Jazz in the Soviet Union and how its social status changed since the 1980s. Letov and most of his Free-Jazz colleagues were engineers and chemists. At their workplace the involvement with Free Jazz was well supported and promoted, for example, through the reduction of working time. For Letov, making music in his free time was a conscious decision and corresponded with his ideal of ‘free art’. However, in the 1990s this changed dramatically, and the consequence of the liberalization of the art and labour market led to a commercialization of Free Jazz.
This essay attempts to draw out the implications of Alfred Sohn-Rethel’s Intellectual and Manual Labour for the consideration of art. This is not something Sohn-Rethel intended or invited, but the aim here is to proceed immanently: by simply extending his critique of Kant’s epistemology to Kant’s aesthetics. The result is a critique of Kant’s influential account of aesthetic experience and art as an ideological form of commodity exchange abstraction.
The British Library holds, in the legacy of John Wallis, six ciphered letters from the French Court to Count Lauzun in Ireland. Five of them, undecipherable by Wallis, were from Minister of War Louvois; their contents are still considered unknown today. However, not only is the plaintext copy of one of these letters held by the Service historique de la défense in Vincennes, but also is the nomenclator used for all five to be found in the Bibliothèque nationale de Paris. Another letter from Naval Minister Seignelay to Lauzun, which Wallis was able to decipher to a large extent, can be found in the Archives nationales de France. In this article, all six letters are published in plaintext, four of them possibly for the first time.
Within the application context of interior spaces, this thesis investigates the emerging area of body-driven energy harvesting technologies from the perspective of human computer interaction (HCI) design. Upcoming innovations in new materials and low-power devices have enabled the conversion of body movements such as steps and arm movements into electrical energy for powering small computational things. Everyday interior spaces such as public buildings or homes can be fitted with new materials that harness human kinetic energy to produce electrical energy. Recent developments in the area of engineering and materials science aim to make these technologies more efficient. However, research about the implications of implementing them in the everyday from the perspective of the experiences and interactions of the people adopting these technologies is highly under-explored. In order to examine this design space, this research proposes to identify emerging concerns and challenges brought by everyday engagement with electricity production that need to be addressed through an interaction design inquiry.
To investigate the above proposition, a design program situated between the field of human computer interaction research and the practice of e-textile design is formulated with the aim to
investigate, at the scale of the interior, how static electricity can bring new perspectives and possibilities for ways of engaging with e-textiles, and designing interactions for energy harvesting with textiles.
The research sets up four research studies to systematically explore the design program. These research studies focus on four questions of how static electricity shapes e-textiles, how electrostatic textiles shape e-textile interactions, how e-static interactions shape everyday behaviours and how e-static studies shape energy interpretations. By developing a working knowledge of textile-based triboelectric generators, various body-generated electricity systems of different scales are envisioned. In the process of making, discovering and exploring different textile systems, questions regarding human interactions, material behaviours and the role of electricity in the everyday are discussed.
This thesis contributes to the practice of e-textiles by creating the foundational knowledge of using static electricity as a resource in e-textile design and development without needing specialised materials. Furthermore, it contributes to the field of human computer interaction research by further developing the topic of energy harvesting as a research area of interaction design. The thesis identifies two key areas for addressing challenges presented by body-driven energy harvesting with HCI which include considering accumulation of interactions over time and incorporating the electric properties of the body in interaction.
Additionally, practical outcomes of this research include:
1) www.estatictextiles.cc- An online handbook for learning about and working with static electricity and e-textiles which includes tutorials and examples from the research process.
And 2) E-static textiles prototyping board- A prototyping board developed for easy integration of static electricity and textiles to be used as an educational tool for designing and prototyping electrostatic energy-related interactions.
Repetition of morphological or lexical units is an established technique able to reinforce the impact of one's argument upon the audience. Rhetoric tradition has canonized dozens of repetition-involving schemas as figures of speech. Our article shows a way how hitherto ignored repetition-involving schemata can be identified. It shows that certain classes of repetitive figures can be represented in terms of specific sequences of integer numbers and vice versa, how specific sets of integer numbers can be translated into sets of regexes able to match repetition-involving expressions. A "Shakespeare number" S is simply defined as an integer with at least one repeated digit in which no digit bigger than X can occur if ever a digit X had not yet occurred in S's decimal representation. Hence, 121 is a Shakespeare number, while 123 or 211 are not. A set of "entangled numbers" is subsequently defined as a subset of "Shakespeare numbers" with an additional property that all digits which occur in them are repeated at least twice in the decimal representation of the number. Thus, a 1212 is an entangled number while 1211 is not. A complete set E of entangled numbers of maximal length of 10 digits is subsequently generated and every member of E is translated into a regex. Each regex is subsequently exposed to all utterances in all works of William Shakespeare, allowing us to pinpoint 3367 instances of 172 distinct E-schemata. This nomenclature may allow scholars to lead a discussion about schemata which have escaped the attention of classical interpretators.
Digital education: ”education-with” / ”education-about” distinction and the teleological definition

Despite being an object of multi-billion public policies and private sector initiatives, the term ”digital education” seems to lack a clear, unambigous, lexicon-ready definition. A closer analysis reveals that in common parlance, the term is used to denote phenomena related to overlapping but distinct topics like ”technology”, ”media” or ”informatics”. Such polysemy implies an overall lack of
clarity which a public debate about education policies should rather avoid. For this reason, we propose to start sorting things out by defining the term ”digital education” in terms of dichotomy of two subordinated concepts, which we label as ”education-about-digital” and ”education-with-digital”. Postulation of this dichotomy combined with analysis of "school's mission" as defined in the legal codices of Land Berlin naturally leads to ”teleological definition” which delimits the concept of digital education in terms of its ideal human result.
Nowadays, society is becoming increasingly conscious of the adverse effect of energy use on the environment, contributing to the depletion of fossil fuels and increasing global warming. Because of the substantial contribution of building energy to these concerns, the intention should be not only to improve building energy efficiency but also to promote the use of renewable technologies, especially solar energy. Today building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) and building-integrated solar thermal (BIST) technologies are recognized by building designers as innovative technology for clean energy and greenhouse gas reduction, especially in cities, where multi-story buildings are dominant with limited roof area.
For the Mediterranean area, the high level of solar radiation and plentiful sunny hours make it appropriate for solar system installation, however, the development of solar energy is still limited. Moreover, due to the high population growth rate, lack of local resources, high energy price, and urbanization, one of the priorities in the Mediterranean area is to promote the energy efficiency of the building both on the supply side and demand side.
Therefore, this research aims to investigate the potential of installation of the photovoltaic (PV) and solar thermal (ST) technologies in the new multi-family residential building envelope in the Mediterranean area, taking Amman, Jordan, as a case study. The focus of this research is on the typical multi-family residential buildings in Amman, as it is the city where about 50% of the new construction in Jordan is taking place, and the residential buildings are the major consumers of energy and electricity in Jordan. The multi-family buildings also form about 75% of the total housing stock in Jordan. The typical multi-family building studied here is composed of five main floors, contains ten residential apartments; the area of each apartment is 150 m2. It is assumed that the building is located in a common residential urbanized zone in Jordan, with 6 m sides offset and 8 m back offset, assuming that one side is facing the main street, and all the buildings have a maximum allowable height of 15 m. All the architectural parameters related to the multi-family buildings have been defined through analyzing the residential building stock in Jordan.
In order to achieve the research aim, the possibility of reducing the energy demand of the typical multi-family building in Amman, Jordan, through passive and architectural design strategies was firstly investigated. After that, different performance criteria were evaluated, mainly quantitative criteria including energy consumption, energy production, and life cycle assessment (energy, carbon, cost). In addition to the qualitative criteria, including visibility and functionality, the purpose here is to emphasize the substantial function of BIPV systems. Each performance criterion was assessed alone. Then, all the performance criteria results were presented in a decision support matrix, which can be used as a comparison to evaluate and identify the solar system's application of choice, based on the criteria of the user. Moreover, a new energy index was formulated to evaluate the overall annual energy performance of BIPV design in terms of multifunctional effects on building energy.
Different methods were adopted in this research; the qualitative criteria were evaluated based on the literature review analysis, while the quantitative criteria were evaluated by using different simulation software, previous literature review, and spreadsheet calculations.
Literature review analyses were conducted in order to identify the relevant possibilities and the aesthetical solution the market offers, and the multiple benefits for PV and ST integration. The knowledge acquired from this part played a significant role in choosing and designing the proposals of PV and ST installation into the multi-story building envelope. Regarding the simulation studies, different building and energy simulation software was used to simulate and optimize the energy performance of the typical multi-family building in Amman, Jordan, through passive and architectural design strategies, as well as to find out the optimum design of the energy system in terms of energy performance (energy demand of the system, and solar energy fraction), and to investigate the energy-saving potential of PV and ST systems with various designs (tilt angles, azimuth, installed area, etc.). For the building energy simulation, each zone in the building was modeled as a space of its own. The energy demand was calculated on an hourly basis for a period of a whole year. The results from the simulation analysis, related literature and guidelines were adopted to conduct a life cycle assessment through spreadsheet calculation, to determine the long-term performance in terms of energy and carbon emissions, as well as cost considerations, taking into account the current market practice. The cradle-to-grave approach was adapted for the environmental life cycle assessments.
The general conclusion of this research is that installing the PV modules into the multi-family buildings envelope in Amman, Jordan, makes a positive contribution in terms of energy performance, as PV systems can cover up to 97% of the new building electricity demand when they are installed on both the roof and south façade, and up to 43% is covered by installing the PV modules into the south facade. Regarding the environmental life cycle assessment, the results proved the carbon saving potential of all the proposed PV systems, as the energy payback time (EPBT) is between 1.5- 3.5 years and the carbon payback time (CPBT) is between 3.4- 7.8 years. However, for the life cycle cost assessment the result showed that due to high capital cost and low cost of electricity, neither system is currently feasible for investment, as the payback time (PBT) is between 9.0- 16 years. However, with future advances in each system and more efficient designs, the payback periods would become tangible and therefore yield better performances. Lastly, the results were used to derive a decision support matrix aimed at providing a friendly approach to facilitate the implementation of solar building applications.
