Berliner Blechblasinstrumentenbau im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert
- The Berlin brass instrument makers played a decisive role in the development of modern orchestral instruments from the late 18th to the 20th century. Driven by the innovative power of the instrument makers and musicians, wind instruments were improved and redesigned. Both the spread of the first valve brass instruments and the construction of the bass tuba originated in the Prussian capital. The Berlin manufacturers supplied not only the Berlin orchestras, but also the Russian czar's court and the Hawaiian military band with instruments. The operas by Richard Wagner would be poorer without the constructions of the Berlin company C. W. Moritz. The present thesis examines the development of the Berlin brass instrument making from the beginning of the 18th century to the end of the 19th century. By means of source texts, documents and historical brass instruments the way to an important centre of brass instrument making is shown. The focus is not only on new research results on the biographies of the manufacturers, but also on the development of the valves and the revival of the Renaissance and Baroque instruments in the late 19th century. On the basis of a large number of historical brass instruments, these developments will be placed in the context of both Berlin and international musical life.…
