Boolean Operators AND, OR, NOT
When you use the Simple Search, all terms are combined by AND automatically. For a more tightly focused search you may use the Boolean Operators to combine different search terms.
AND: The document has to contain all search terms.
OR: The document has to contain one of the search terms. This function broadens your search and is recommended, when there are different terms for the same meaning.
article OR paperNOT: This function works excluding and might be useful to reduce a large result list: Documents, which contain the one term, may not contain the other.
article NOT paperThe Boolean Operators work for the Advanced Search as well. You may use them to combine different search terms within one search field. For example, to search for documents of the author "Doe" in the years 2022 or 2023, use the query:
Author: Doe
Year: 2022 OR 2023Wildcards
In the field 'Search:', you may use the symbols '*' and '?' as wildcards. Use them in place of a character or characters that are unknown or that may differ. You cannot use them in front of a word or search string.
Example 1: chemi* finds chemical but also chemistry or chemist.Example 2: licen?e finds licence and license. You may use double quotes (") to search for phrases.

94469 Deggendorf - Can the library help me with my secondary publications?
-
In order to increase the open access ratio at Deggendorf Institute of Technology (DIT), the library is happy to support DIT researchers in publishing their publication lists in OPUS THD with full texts open access. This is possible if a publisher's self-archiving policy or German copyright law (§ 38 UrhG) permits secondary publication, also known as ‘green open access’.
The library is happy to check for you via the Open Policy Finder or the publisher's website whether and under what conditions the publications contained in your publication lists can be made available online. If you are interested in this service, please send us the form “Submission of electronic publications as part of the secondary publication service of the library of Deggendorf Institute of Technology (DIT)” (PDF /Word) with your publication list or a link to it by email.
In certain cases, however, the cooperation of the authors is required for further processing. Often, it is not permitted to publish the publisher’s version, but only a preprint or postprint. The Library therefore asks you to check whether such versions are available at home or on your work computer and, if so, to send them along with your request.
If you would like the library to not only check, but also to take over the complete secondary publication – including uploading to OPUS THD, metadata maintenance and final publication in accordance with the OPUS THD policies (see 2.1 and 3.2: already published documents cannot be deleted retrospectively) – this can be requested using the above-mentioned form or by granting the library a corresponding mandate.
We look forward to working with you to make your research results freely accessible.
- How do I publish my work here?
-
Click on Publish on the homepage. You will first be asked to select a document type. If you want to import metadata via a Crossref-DOI (https://search.crossref.org/), please select *Import from DOI* here, the document type will be recognised automatically during import.
You can upload your document directly below. To do this, click on Choose file and upload your file. In the following field, you must confirm that you have read and agree to the legal notices and guidelines.
Then click on ‘Next step’. The actual form follows. Here you will be asked for various data about your publication (so-called bibliographic metadata), which is used for indexing and description in online search platforms, databases, catalogues and other bibliographic directories. If you have previously clicked on *Import from DOI*, you can enter the DOI of the document, import the metadata from Crossref and have some fields pre-filled.
Otherwise, describe the document you want to upload here using the categories provided. Depending on the document type, some of the fields are mandatory and must be filled in by you. Otherwise, provide as much information as possible. For example, the following are recorded
- the title of your publication and the language of the title
- the abstract of your document
- the co-authors
- the date on which the document is published (usually the day you post it)
- the language of the document (to be selected from a list)
- the licence under which you want to publish your document (to be selected from a list)
At the end of the data entry process, your entries are displayed again and you have three options: You can correct the entries for your document if necessary, add it to a collection or save it directly.
Please note:
Cookies must be allowed in order to be able to submit documents reliably and without errors via the publication form.
- What is metadata?
-
Definition
Metadata can be defined as
- data describing one or more resources or as
- data associated with an object and describing it
Metadata describes documents, objects or services and contains information about their content, structure or form. More abstractly metadata is a description of data or "data about data". Bibliographic data sets and catalog entries in library catalogs can be seen as a kind of metadata.
This repository uses the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (short Dublin Core (DC)) which has fifteen basic elements. Dublin Core is the result of international efforts to reach a collective consensus in describing electronic objects (in the broadest sense). The Library of Congress (LoC), the Online Cataloging Library Center (OCLC) and several national libraries are dealing with Dublin Core in many projects and are close to introduce the system respectively.
In OPUS THD, there is a relationship between metadata and document types. This means that the metadata fields can vary depending on the document type. For example, only the document type Dissertation has the metadata fields Reviewer and Supervisor.
Document type descriptions
The following document type descriptions are partly taken from the OPUS 4 manual (https://www.opus-repository.org/userdoc/documenttypes/, in German).
Part of Periodical
The document type Part of Periodical refers to a completed part (usually an issue, sometimes also a volume or whole year) of a journal or periodical and contains several contributions in the form of scientific articles.
Book
The document type Book describes classic monographic scientific books, usually with only one author.
Doctoral Thesis
The Doctoral Thesis document type describes the highest level of a final thesis, which is equivalent to or higher than a dissertation. Habilitation theses can also be published under this category.
Conference Proceeding
The Conference Proceeding document type includes all types of text publications with a scientific claim that are associated with a conference (e.g. conference papers, contributions to conference proceedings, scientific posters from conferences).
Preprint
The document type Preprint includes preliminary scientific or technical papers that have not yet been peer-reviewed and have been submitted to a scientific journal or as part of a book and are to be published.
Review
The Review document type refers to reviews of books or articles of a scientific nature or a summary of a work that does not originate from the author.
Technical report
The Technical Report document type refers to a structured document describing technical scientific research work, often with results, procedures and conclusions. These are formal publications intended to convey technical information clearly and concisely and are usually published in appropriately named publishing series (e.g. ‘IEEE PES Technical Reports’). Please do not upload other forms of reports here, such as annual or institutional reports.
Part of a book
The document type Part of a Book represents documents that have been created as part of a scientific book publication, such as chapters or contributions to edited volumes.
Lecture
The Lecture document type contains academic textbooks published by publishers, as well as lecture notes issued in bound book form during your lectures, which are to be published digitally for the first time via OPUS THD Open Access. Please do not upload pure slide collections or PowerPoint presentations here (this would be more appropriate in iLearn).
Article
The document type (scholarly) Article includes documents that have been published as articles, editorials or other editorial or content-related parts in a scientific journal or scientific periodical. In addition to the publisher's full texts, postprints can also be uploaded here. For preprints that have not yet been peer-reviewed, please use the document type Preprint.
Information about ORCID
The Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) is a unique, persistent and publisher- or platform-independent author identifier. It enables scientific work to be assigned to a person, regardless of the frequency of the name, name changes, umlauts and career-related changes of institution. You can apply for an ORCID free of charge at https://orcid.org/register.
To manage the metadata to your publications on specific platforms, you can use the options available there, such as maintaining your Google Scholar Profile and Web of Science Researcher Profile or using the Scopus Author Feedback Wizard to verify your Scopus Author Profile.
For clear assignment to your institution, it is also recommended that you provide institution identifiers, if requested or supported by publishers in the submission process. The ROR ID of the Deggendorf Institute of Technology is https://ror.org/02kw5st29, the Ringgold ID is 64381.
Citing the bibliographic metadata
Electronic publications, such as those in OPUS THD, are equivalent to conventional publications and can therefore also be cited. The generally applicable citation guidelines for scientific works apply. Certain standards should be adhered to, e.g. ISO 690. Which citation method or style is used depends on the publication and its author guidelines.
Here is an example of the required metadata (author, year of publication, title, repository name, URL or PID) for the citation style APA, 7th Ed:
Putnings, M. (2024). Introduction to the Open Access literature search for theses and seminar papers. Zenodo. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10622864
Reusing the bibliographic metadata
Insofar as the legal status can be defined by the library, the metadata is free of charge and freely reusable under the licence condition CC0 1.0.
- What's to regard if I plan to publish my work by a professional publisher or have done that already?
-
In most cases this is no problem. Please ensure in any case, if your publisher allows a parallel publication! To do that you can use the Open Policy Finder.
- What about licenses for my publication?
-
All publications on OPUS THD are published Open Access. Open Access stands for the free and unlimited dissemination of quality-assured scientific literature. A published work can be read by anyone free of charge on the internet and reused under the conditions of the respective open licence. For more information on Open Access, see https://www.th-deg.de/en/students/library#open-science, section "Open Access" or https://open-access.network/en/home.
As an author, you can determine which terms of use should apply to your work published on OPUS THD. These conditions are defined by the Creative Commons (CC) licence. You can choose between different licence texts during the publishing process.
If you need help choosing the CC licence, you can use the CC Licence Chooser tool https://chooser-beta.creativecommons.org/ or contact the library. As a rule, the most liberal CC BY 4.0 licence is usually recommended.

PREAMBLE
The following provisions and information refer solely to the OPUS THD publication server. Please also note, where necessary or applicable, the other guidelines and statutes of the Deggendorf Institute of Technology (DIT, in German Technische Hochschule Deggendorf, THD) in their current version, such as the Open Access Policy, the Statutes for safeguarding good scientific practice and dealing with scientific misconduct, or the doctoral regulations of the inter-university doctoral centres in which the THD participates.
1. OBJECTIVES AND CONTENT CRITERIA OF OPUS THD
1.1. Objective description of the service
The OPUS THD publication server aims to provide all members of the THD with the organisational and technical framework conditions for the electronic publication (first and second publication) of scientific documents via the library. As part of this library service, academic documents are made available on the Internet for research and teaching purposes in compliance with quality standards. With its service, the library supports free access to scientific information in the sense of Open Access. The complete visible offer of OPUS THD is available Open Access.
The services offered for the publication of electronic documents in OPUS THD include the storage and archiving of scientific documents published by members of DIT.
The electronic documents receive permanent persistent identifiers (PIDs) and are indexed via national and international catalogues, search engines and other reference tools. Dissertations are archived long-term by the German National Library.
1.2. Content-related collective mission of OPUS THDThe following categories of electronic documents can be saved by members of DIT and distributed via OPUS THD. In addition to current publications, the aim is also to include older publications:
- Complete issues (booklets) of a journal published by members of DIT, such as the issues of the Journal of Applied Interdisciplinary Research or Bavarian Journal of Applied Sciences.
- Scientific textbooks or book chapters.
- Dissertations.
- Conference publications.
- Preprints, technical reports, reviews and scientific articles in general.
- Lecture publications (e.g. textbooks).
As a rule, the documents to be published should be peer-reviewed or, in the case of preprints, be preliminary stages of corresponding documents. In addition, the guidelines for safeguarding good scientific practice (https://wissenschaftliche-integritaet.de/en/code-of-conduct/) and the currently valid statutes for safeguarding good scientific practice and for dealing with scientific misconduct at Deggendorf Institute of Technology must be observed when preparing research results and writing documents.
2. LEGAL FRAMEWORK CONDITIONS
2.1. Rights and obligations of the contracting parties
By agreeing to the guidelines and accepting the publication contract, the author grants the operator of the publication server the following rights of use:
- The permanent right to electronic storage, in particular in OPUS THD and underlying or connected databases.
- The simple permanent right of use (Section 31 (2) UrhG) for making available to the public in international data networks and academic search engines (examples would be Bielefeld Academic Search Engine or Google Scholar).
- The permanent right to conversion for the purpose of long-term archiving or visualisation, taking into account the preservation of the content (the original archiving is retained).
- The right to change and/or complete the metadata provided by the author or publisher if necessary.
- The right to make the metadata accessible and usable by anyone without restriction.
- The right to pass on the document and the associated metadata to the German National Library as well as other libraries, specialised information services, databases or document servers with the same aforementioned rights; for dissertations, see also there.
The metadata of the documents published on the publication server are available under CC0 1.0 Universal (https://creativecommons. org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/) and may be saved by anyone and made available to third parties - if necessary in an enriched form or in a selection.
The authors' copyrights are therefore preserved. The library is only granted a simple right of use. Publication on OPUS THD therefore does not prevent further publication of the documents in specialist journals or monographs or on other servers.
In accordance with the recommendations of the German Council of Science and Humanities on digital information provision by university libraries, all researchers at DIT are advised to reserve the right to self-archive in OPUS THD when concluding publishing contracts and to additionally publish the documents they have written on the publication server - possibly after a retention period.Documents that have already been published will not be deleted from the server and can no longer be changed. However, the library is authorised to exclude published documents from publication, if there is a violation of the rights of third parties or of the provisions of these guidelines and/or the publication contract.
2.2. Liability of the contracting parties
The authors and publishers are solely responsible for the content of the documents. DIT assumes no liability for the content of the publications provided and linked external sites. The author or publisher assures that the document does not violate legal regulations, official orders or other rights of third parties. The authors or publishers undertake to clarify any copyrights and exploitation rights of third parties that may be affected or to obtain their consent. If the author or publisher becomes aware of the existence or emergence of legal obstacles, they shall inform the library immediately.
3. THE ELECTRONIC DOCUMENT
3.1. General information on the electronic document
In these guidelines, the term electronic document refers to a document that is based on text, sometimes with graphics and tables, stored in digital form and distributed via computer networks. An electronic document to be published via OPUS THD fulfils the following conditions:
- It is intended for distribution to the public.
- It is provided in the PDF (Portable Document Format), PDF/UA or PDF/A file format. Another accepted file format is EPUB.
- In order to enable open access and long-term archiving, the electronic document must not have DRM, password and/or copy protection.
- It is not a dynamic document. If changes are necessary, the modified electronic document is saved as a new version.
- There is a size limit of 100 MB for uploadable files. For exceptions, e.g. for illustrated books with high resolution, please contact us in advance.
The documents are described by the authors themselves in terms of form and content using an online form and entered into OPUS THD.
3.2. Long-term archivingThe operator guarantees the archiving and availability of all original data for at least 5 years. However, it is planned to make the data available online indefinitely in cooperation with the German National Library (so-called long-term archiving).
Long-term archiving depends on the availability of the format, the viewing software and the conversion options; dissertations are already archived long-term by the German National Library. Documents that have been finally published and submitted to the German National Library via the OAI interface can no longer be changed or deleted.3.3 Accessibility
The Deggendorf Institute of Technology is committed to accessibility, equality, and inclusion. With this in mind, we are constantly striving to improve the accessibility of our content and online offerings. To achieve this, we need your help. As an author, please consider relevant accessibility aspects from an early stage — ideally when writing your publications.
- Use the format templates provided in MS Word or by the publisher (for example, use the heading levels instead of manually formatting headings in bold and large).
- Avoid multiple blank lines or spaces in a row. Instead, use paragraph spacing and tabs or tab stops.
- Provide alternative texts for all images (graphics, diagrams, etc.) that describe the content for blind or visually impaired people.
- Avoid large and nested tables. If tables are unavoidable, use simple structures and label the heading lines accordingly.
- Ensure there is good contrast in images or coloured content.
- When linking text, use meaningful link text and enter descriptions in the tooltips.
- Enter all necessary metadata in the document properties, such as the document's title and the language used in the document.
- While writing the document, regularly use the integrated accessibility check in MS Word and make corrections accordingly.
- When you finally save the document as a PDF, also include all non-printable information such as document structure tags for accessibility.
If it is not a disproportionate burden, we recommend checking the PDF document for accessibility again after saving. Useful tools for this are the 'Guidelines for PDF documents' from the PDF Working Group of the Accessibility Taskforce (https://www.boersenverein.de/beratung-service/barrierefreiheit/leitfaden-zur-erstellung-barrierefreier-pdf-dokumente/, in German) and the PAC Standard (https://pac.pdf-accessibility.org/de).
You can correct the errors and warnings issued in PAC with an existing Adobe licence (https://www.th-deg.de/en/mythdeg/it-services/adobe-creative-cloud) or, in some cases, with free tools such as PAVE (https://pave-pdf.org/). Further information and many correction instructions can be found at https://www.barrierefreies-webdesign.de/knowhow/pdf-ua/ (in German).
3.4. Indexing the electronic document
All documents are classified by the authors themselves. The content of the documents is indexed using keywords and categorisation in classification systems. If no Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) number of at least three digits has been assigned, library staff will add one using automatic, AI-based processes where necessary.
3.5. Notification of the electronic document to VG Wort
Text documents published in OPUS THD can be registered for special remuneration by the author in the registration and notification portal T.O.M. of VG WORT (https://tom.vgwort.de/portal/index). Registration on T.O.M. is required for this. Please also note the VG Wort conditions and information on special remuneration.
The URL http://www.kobv.de must be entered as the domain for your document when registering it in T.O.M. The direct path to your document or the OPUS THD homepage will not be accepted by the system as a URL due to technical requirements. If VG Wort carries out an examination to determine your claims, please report the exact path to your document.
It is not possible to use VG WORT counter marks in OPUS THD.
4. SPECIAL TECHNICAL FEATURES OF THE PUBLICATION SERVER
This publication server is operated on the basis of OPUS 4 software and hosted by the KOBV. Further information can be found at https://www.kobv.de/entwicklung/software/opus-4/ and http://www.opus-repository.org/.
The electronic documents are provided with individual and permanent addresses (PIDs), which allow direct access to the documents. The electronic documents can be found via OPUS THD, library catalogues, search engines and OAI service providers (e.g. OAIster).
International standards such as the guidelines of the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) are used for the indexing, storage and archiving of electronic documents and for the exchange of metadata.
The hosting operator KOBV ( https://www.kobv.de/entwicklung/software/opus-4/) guarantees the necessary data security and data protection for OPUS THD, among other things in the form of a security and disaster recovery concept and an operating concept including maintenance plans. In addition, the KOBV ensures regular storage and backup routines to secure the stored data.
A procedure consisting of incremental (daily), cumulative (weekly) and full (monthly) data backups is used. Data is backed up on different tapes in each case. The data is backed up daily at the hosting provider KOBV on magnetic cassettes located in a tape robot. The data backup cassettes remain in the tape robot, which is located in a separate, specially secured room in the KOBV data centre. The KOBV guarantees the full availability of OPUS THD on all working days and ensures that the application system is restored as quickly as possible in the event of system failures. Maintenance-related system outages will be announced by the hosting provider KOBV in good time; the library will pass on the relevant information.
5. ORGANISATIONAL RULESThe publication server is operated by the library. The hosting operator KOBV is only responsible for the technical operation of the OPUS instance and the archiving of the uploaded documents. Accordingly, the library indemnifies KOBV against any claims by third parties that are asserted due to infringement of rights derived from the operation and content of the instance.
Electronic publication is free of charge for members of DIT and is generally only intended for them. Electronic documents are usually submitted for distribution via the document server using the online form provided here. Additional work required for publication, such as the preparation of the electronic documents or conversion into other formats, is supervised or carried out by library staff by arrangement. The library's OPUS team is the point of contact for all questions relating to the publication server:

Germany - What do I need to consider when publishing my dissertation?
-
Information on doctoral procedures can be found on the DIT information pages (https://www.th-deg.de/doctorate). All doctoral candidates must publish their dissertations in accordance with the doctoral regulations of their doctoral centre after they have passed the oral doctoral examination.
If there are any uncertainties, e.g. with which partner of the doctoral centre and with which institutional repository should be published, please consult your contact person at the DIT Graduate School. Redundant publications on several institutional repositories should be avoided in order to ensure clear citation.
Before publishing electronically, please clarify the copyright and licensing aspects so that the publication of the dissertation and any subsequent publications do not conflict with the rights of third parties. If you would like to publish the thesis in a publishing house before or after the OPUS THD publication, the publisher must agree to your electronic open access publication on OPUS THD under the licence you have chosen (e.g. Creative Commons).
In the case of a cumulative dissertation, the publications included as an appendix, accepted for publication and published in print or in electronic journals are generally exempt from the publication obligation. Please consult your respective doctoral degree regulations. This means that the publications included do not necessarily have to be uploaded to OPUS THD in full text, but the complete bibliographic details including DOI must be provided. However, if all licence rights have been clarified or are concordant, for example in the case of Open Access article publications, it is of course always advisable to publish the complete publications for reasons of readability.
For reasons of data protection, we ask you to upload and publish only the electronic content of the actual dissertation. Please do not publish any other documents related to the doctorate, such as your CV, your police clearance certificate or your affidavit.
