The project “Barrier-reduced Machines in Innovative Interaction” (iBaMs) was aimed at enabling employees with intellectual disabilities to extend their range of tasks and to increase their level of responsibility. This goal is to be achieved by an assistive accessible control panel for the operation of complex computer-controlled machines. Therefore, users’ needs and skills as well as design requirements had to be specified in the project. The result is a concept for an assistive control panel whose display interface can be tailor-made to individual needs. Furthermore, indicators for characterizing user profiles and control panels were identified, and a concept was developed of how control panels can be determined and matched to the needs and preferences of individual employees. The complexity in recognizing the requirements of people with intellectual disabilities in a digital world is mapped onto a complex interaction of two sets of indicators—namely social indicators and technical indicators describing control panels. Guidelines on how the results can be evaluated are presented using plausible but fictitious data.
Synergistic Chemo- and Photodynamic Treatment of Cancer Cells with C60 Fullerene Nanocomplexes
(2021)
Recent progress in nanotechnology has attracted interest to a biomedical application of the carbon nanoparticle C60 fullerene (C60) due to its unique structure and versatile biological activity. In the current study the dual functionality of C60 as a photosensitizer and a drug nanocarrier was exploited to improve the efficiency of chemotherapeutic drugs towards human leukemic cells.
Pristine C60 demonstrated time-dependent accumulation with predominant mitochondrial localization in leukemic cells. C60’s effects on leukemic cells irradiated with high power single chip LEDs of different wavelengths were assessed to find out the most effective photoexcitation conditions. A C60-based noncovalent nanosized system as a carrier for an optimized drug delivery to the cells was evaluated in accordance to its physicochemical properties and toxic effects. Finally, nanomolar amounts of C60-drug nanocomplexes in 1:1 and 2:1 molar ratios were explored to improve the efficiency of cell treatment, complementing it with photodynamic approach.
A proposed treatment strategy was developed for C60 nanocomplexes with the common chemotherapeutic drug Doxorubicin, whose intracellular accumulation and localization, cytotoxicity and mechanism of action were investigated. The developed strategy was revealed to be transferable to an alternative potent anticancer drug – the herbal alkaloid Berberine.
Hereafter, a strong synergy of treatments arising from the combination of C60-mediated drug delivery and C60 photoexcitation was revealed. Presented data indicate that a combination of chemo- and photodynamic treatments with C60-drug nanoformulations could provide a promising synergetic approach for cancer treatment.
Extensive pastoral livestock systems in Central Europe provide multiple ecosystem services and support biodiversity in agricultural landscapes but their viability is challenged by livestock depredation (LD) associated with the recovery of wolf populations. Variation in the spatial distribution of LD depends on a suite of factors, most of which are unavailable at the appropriate scales. To assess if LD patterns can be predicted sufficiently with land use data alone at the scale of one federal state in Germany, we employed a machine-learning-supported resource selection approach. The model used LD monitoring data, and publicly available land use data to describe the landscape configuration at LD and control sites (resolution 4 km * 4 km). We used SHapley Additive exPlanations to assess the importance and effects of landscape configuration and cross-validation to evaluate the model performance. Our model predicted the spatial distribution of LD events with a mean accuracy of 74%. The most influential land use features included grassland, farmland and forest. The risk of livestock depredation was high if these three landscape features co-occurred with a specific proportion. A high share of grassland, combined with a moderate proportion of forest and farmland, increased LD risk. We then used the model to predict the LD risk in five regions; the resulting risk maps showed high congruence with observed LD events. While of correlative nature and lacking specific information on wolf and livestock distribution and husbandry practices, our pragmatic modelling approach can guide spatial prioritisation of damage prevention or mitigation practices to improve livestock-wolf coexistence in agricultural landscapes.
We consider maintenance sites for urban rail systems, where unavailable tracks typically require changes to the regular timetable, and often even to the line plan. In this paper, we present an integrated mixed-integer linear optimization model to compute an optimal line plan that makes best use of the available tracks, together with a periodic timetable, including its detailed routing on the tracks within the stations. The key component is a flexible, turn-sensitive event-activity network that allows to integrate line planning and train routing using a track choice extension of the Periodic Event Scheduling Problem (PESP). Major goals are to maintain as much of the regular service as possible, and to keep the necessary changes rather local. Moreover, we present computational results on real construction site scenarios on the S-Bahn Berlin network. We demonstrate that this integrated problem is indeed solvable on practically relevant instances.
In this paper, we explain the development of an analysis tool (Wildau Information System Evaluation [WISE] Work Index) for exploring the adoption of innovative E-Government applications and for presenting preliminary results regarding the application “eAkte”. We argue that the innovation processes characterized by the use of E-Government applications and tools continually transform the division of labour and the organizational aspects of work in uncertain ways. In some cases, adopting E-Government tools might exert a negative influence on work effectiveness and efficiency. A continuous evaluation and a participative redesigning of E-Government applications might help to avoid negative adopting habits in E-Government. Our research goal is to improve our WISE Work Index which aims at analysing the adoption of E-Government tools among public sector employees. Through our index, we explore how public employees use new E-Government tools in their day-to-day work, how they perceive the usefulness of the tools, and how they adapt their former working routines to the new IT environment. Implementing our index makes it possible to monitor the impact of using E-Government online services as well as their content and to offer concrete suggestions to public managers about ways to enhance the public value of their information and communication technologies (ICT) including employees' views on actively co-designing the public informational services.
Sensitizing students to information security and privacy awareness with analogue gamification
(2019)
Many studies and investigations in the area of information security reveal a careless handling of sensitive data and insufficient information security awareness. Despite increasing digitization, which has a huge impact on society as a whole, we tend not to pay enough attention to the risks associated with it. But research shows that the mere transfer of knowledge is not enough to cause behavioural changes. Rather, a systemic approach that can bring about the necessary emotionalization and reflection through analogue game-based learning is helpful.
Government digital agendas worldwide go hand in hand with the digital transformation in businesses and public administrations as well as the digital changes taking place in society. Information security (IS) and awareness (ISA) must be an integrated part of these agendas. The goal of IS is to protect information of all types and origins. Here, the employees play a necessary and significant role in the success of IS, and the entire staff of an institution need to know about their specific roles and be aware of the information security management system (ISMS). As there are still fundamental strategic deficiencies in the institutions themselves, humans should not be called “the weakest link” in the security chain. Rather, sustainable awareness-raising and training for people should be established in the institutions using interactive, authentic, and game-based learning methods. Psychological studies show the great importance of emotionalization when communicating IS knowledge and the reliable exchange of experience about IS. However, in many institutions, a change in culture is becoming necessary. IS must be integrated into all (business) processes and projects, and viable safeguards must be included. This chapter summarizes the most important scientific findings and transfers them to the practice of public administrations in Germany. Moreover, it shows examples of learning methods and provides practical assistance for IS sensitization and training.
